‘Seeing is believing’: How Ticketmaster’s 3D Virtual Venue brings Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to life
Sportspro talks to tottenham’s head of ticketing ian murphy and ticketmaster sport coo chris gratton to find out how technology lets fans see what kind of experience they will get before making a purchase..
When Tottenham Hotspur decided to move from White Hart Lane to a brand new state-of-the-art stadium next door, the Premier League soccer club knew it had to make the new arena as special and as atmospheric as its home of more than 100 years.
No stone was left unturned in the quest to build the perfect soccer venue, with unprecedented attention paid to elements like acoustics, AV equipment, and stand structure. The new stadium’s 17,500-capacity South Stand is the largest single-tiered stand in England, the longest bar in Europe helps fans get their half-time pints quicker, and the range of catering and hospitality options is unparalleled in the country.
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium combines everything fans loved about White Hart Lane with all of the advances made in stadium design and technology over the last century, opening up new revenue streams for the club and delivering a painless, modern experience for supporters who will hopefully spend more time at the ground.

But the club acknowledges the old adage ‘seeing is believing’ still holds true. Its partnership with Ticketmaster not only simplifies the process of purchasing and distributing match tickets, it also helps drive awareness of its experiences and catering options to fans at the point of purchase with 3D Virtual Venue.
The technology offers fans a glimpse of the view from their seat and allows them to compare different ticket and hospitality options, bringing the stadium to life and driving fan satisfaction and sales.
SportsPro sat down with Ian Murphy, the head of ticketing and membership at Tottenham Hotspur, and Chris Gratton, the chief operating officer of Ticketmaster Sport, to find out more.
Tottenham are the first Premier League club to use Ticketmaster’s 3D Virtual Venue. How does the technology work and what was involved to get it up and running at Tottenham Hotspur stadium?
Chris Gratton: Last year we launched our co-innovation partnership with Tottenham Hotspur and as part of that we wanted to look at technologies that can completely innovate the way that the club interacts with their fans. Virtual Venue 3D technology gives the fan the opportunity to completely refine their buying experience and compare and contrast between options within the stadium, both in general and premium areas to perfect that buying experience.
In order to get it up and running we worked with the club to build a brand new integrated sales flow and identical stadium replica in digital 3D from scratch. We’ve already seen the technology stand up to onsales and be performant whilst allowing fans the opportunity to see areas of the stadium they never would have the option to normally.
Ian Murphy: As part of our ongoing commitment to improve and enhance the experience of our fans in all their interactions with us, we were pleased to work with Ticketmaster to develop this upgrade to our ticket purchasing experience. Introducing the latest technology using Virtual Venue allowed us to give fans the chance to see the different views from available seats.
What have been traditional pain points when it comes to ticketing – both from a customer and a club point of view? How will this technology benefit fans wanting to buy tickets and how does it differ from other ‘view from my seat’ features?
CG: Traditional pain points in the sports ticketing purchase process are continually evolving in line with broader consumer expectations. For many years the buying process in sports lagged behind the truly streamlined and efficient processes in [fast moving consumer goods], retail and airline industries, but we believe with the introduction of our completely redesigned front end sales flows, benchmarked against those industries for best practice, and the addition of Virtual Venue we can address two of the main ones.
Namely, they are speed and ease of conversion alongside the ability to tailor, down to your own preferences on sight lines, your selection process. Virtual Venue does away with flat plan seating maps with view from seat and gives you the ability to select, view and, as 3D Virtual Venue is fully integrated, buy in one flow. It also allows screen in screen visibility on comparing seats and lines, as well as viewing lounges and premium spaces which really brings the stadium to life in a way that traditional view from seat doesn’t do.
Additionally, the architecturally accurate 3D detailing gives sports clubs and organisations the ability to maximise sponsorship opportunities.
Stay up to date with the latest sports business news and insights.
IM: The biggest issue that Virtual Venue is addressing is that it allows people who are buying tickets to explore the venue more accurately than ever before ahead of making a purchase. If someone is not familiar with the venue, wants to experience an alternative location or has specific requirements for their visit, then Virtual Venue gives much greater levels of detail than we have been able to offer online in the past. The ability to compare different views and locations gives further options and information to the visitor as well.
Many of these points would previously have been dealt with via a telephone call, so as well as giving a better fan experience it also helps to reduce inbound call traffic.
3D Virtual View offers fan an indication of what their view will be at the game.
Attending a sporting event is no longer a case of turning up five minutes before kick-off and then leaving as soon as possible. It’s increasingly about experiences. How can technology like 3D Virtual Venue help fans learn more about what to expect when choosing their seats?
CG: Working with Tottenham we really wanted to bring to life the experience and opportunities within the wider footprint of the stadium and different areas throughout the stadium. Virtual Venue allows us to bring to life not only the bowl and hospitality areas but anything the venue decides they want to showcase, such as concourses, bars, restaurants and, in the case of Tottenham, the Dare Skywalk, stadium tours and other attractions as they are added.
To that end, fans can really understand the experience and plan where they want to meet and what they want to do on the day well in advance. Virtual Venue also brings the club’s branding and the fans’ passion for attending live matches to both the ‘know before you go’ and the buying process.
IM: The initial release of the platform on our website has largely focused on the bowl seating and premium areas of the stadium. Over time we will look to expand Virtual Venue into the other areas. This will provide detail and information that was previously unavailable online regarding the location of food and drink outlets and all other facilities that could impact where a supporter opts to purchase their seats.
Corporate customers can also preview the stadium’s impressive hospitality options
The variety of hospitality options is one of the most unique elements of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. How does 3D Virtual Venue capture this in a way that wasn’t previously possible?
CG: With Virtual Venue you can showcase the stadium to its absolute best. To that end, for premium areas including hospitality, where the fan is expecting the absolute best from their experience, we are able to give them a true representation of the experience they are buying.
Club and venue has an international appeal and Virtual Venue allows those potential new fans to virtually set foot inside the venue to view all ticket and experience options open to them, including premium areas and hospitality.
IM: Historically our online platforms would have struggled to do justice to the facilities available at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Virtual Venue has given us the opportunity to visually showcase the state of the art premium facilities at the venue both as part of the direct sales journey or as part of a wider conversation with prospective clients who are interested in exploring options available to them.

Tottenham move first on Ticketmaster’s 3D Virtual Venue technology
Spurs have left no stone unturned in their pursuit to make the new stadium one of the best in world soccer and technology is a huge part of that. how important is it for the club to continue to innovate with services like 3d virtual venue.
IM: Virtual Venue provides a platform for continuous innovation at our venue and what we do digitally is a core part of our DNA. When designing our venue, we incorporated technology into the fabric of it, which has allowed us to accelerate innovation to support our business operations and to continue to enhance the fan experience. 3D Virtual Venue, with Ticketmaster Sport, has given us an operational tool that supports our premium and general admission ticketing journey and also allows our fans to experience our venue virtually, enhancing the digital experience they have with the club.
Ultimately, what do Tottenham hope to gain from this technology? How will you measure success?
IM: We are constantly striving to provide our fans with the best experience whenever they interact with us. The introduction of Virtual Venue is a further step in making the fan experience the best it can be as well as highlighting the range of seating options available throughout all areas of the stadium. We are looking forward to continuing to work with Ticketmaster to develop and improve the platform in the future.

Tottenham Hotspur have given fans a way of taking a walk through their brand new stadium from their phones or tablets.
Spurs' new ground is currently under construction, but the new app allows you to take a glimpse around what the finished ground will look like, using augmented reality to stand in the centre circle and get a feel for how big the new stadium will be.
All you need to do is load up the app, then download a tracker image which you then point your phone or tablet at to dive in and take a tour, looking around the 61,000-seater state-of-the-art stadium.
Previously those looking to buy premium seat packages were among the few that were able to take an augmented reality tour of the new ground, which is set to house Spurs for the 2018/19 season.
Now anybody can take the tour.
You can download the app from iTunes here .

Take a virtual spin through Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium
Spurs fans feeling wistful for a home of their own, can get a taste through free vr app.
Ahead of tomorrow's derby between the Tottenham Hotspurs and Arsenal, Spurs fans can get a virtual glance at where the club will play in its new stadium set to open next year.
Saturday's Premier League game will play at Emirates Stadium. But the Spurs will have a shiny new home of their own in 2018, complete with a Sky Lounge, members dining club, museum and even a 40 meter (131-foot) climbing wall running up the exterior. The stadium will reportedly be the third-biggest in the Premier League.
Fans can download either an iOS or Android virtual reality ( VR) app that lets them pretend they're on the pitch — or take a 360-degree spin at the new stadium in its proposed glory online from the center of the field, checking out seats and luxury boxes. (Super Suites can hold up to 21 guests, Sideline Suites just 12.) SPVRS, the free app, (which stands for Stadium Project Virtual Reality Suite: a mouthful) is really meant as a marketing app for anyone interested in buying those ultra-luxe seats.
Using VR to either watch sports events or play sports games is a growing more popular. Fans have been able to tap into VR broadcasts of The Kentucky Derby to events during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Live streams are also giving fans a chance to see how close — or far — the stadium is from completion. (Hint: don't expect to see climbing walls any time soon.)
The Spurs former stadium, White Hart Lane, which held about 32,000 seats, is doubling in size to 61,000 seats when it opens for 2018/2019 Premier League season. The new venue is also reportedly slotted to have a retractable pitch — with both artificial and grass turf — so the stadium can host National Football League games as part of a multi-year agreement.
When first proposed, the new stadium projections put the construction costs at £750M ($980M). Those numbers have been revised to upwards of £800M ($1.05B). Tottenham are making do playing at Wembley Stadium while their new field is in the works. But with the last home league win Arsenal had against Tottenham dating back to 2013, the Spurs may not be feeling any concern about being homeless, themselves, for now.

Tottenham Hotspur launches 3D Virtual Tour for guests to explore stadium event spaces
- August 4, 2020
- By Stuart O'Brien
Tottenham Hotspur has launched a new 3D Virtual Tour for guests to explore the event spaces within its stadium virtually as the Club furthers its post-lockdown hospitality plans.
The stadium’s conference and events facilities are now able to accommodate socially-distanced meetings of up to 30 people, with larger events permitted from 1 October, in line with public health guidance.
Like many venues up and down the country, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is adapting to the challenges presented by COVID-19 and has implemented a raft of measures to protect the health and safety of its visitors and staff.
Measures include non-invasive temperature checks, one-way systems, increased cleaning and pre-packaged food.
This has resulted in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium receiving ‘We’re Good To Go’ status from Visit Britain – an industry standard recognising businesses across the tourism sector that can demonstrate that they are adhering to the respective Government and public health guidance around COVID-19.
The Club is now taking bookings to host conferences and events, and has released the new tool together with Headbox so that prospective guests can take a look around areas of the world-class stadium without having to travel to the venue itself.
Unique spaces that can be explored via the technology include:
- The bright and spacious East Quarter Three
- US-style sports bar, Lower Eastside
- The bespoke NFL Press Auditorium, set out in theatre style
- The huge NFL Locker Room – which has been used by the Tottenham Hotspur First Team during recent behind-closed-doors Premier League matches
The tool enables event organisers to walk through each area and provides tips around how the spaces could be used to host events. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is able to accommodate anything from major business conferences to company parties.
Andy O’Sullivan, Venue Director, said: “We are excited to be planning to welcome guests back to the event spaces at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“As one of the newest and most exciting venues in London, you can only truly understand what is on offer by seeing the spaces for yourself, which we understand is difficult for people in the current circumstances.
“By launching our 3D Virtual Tour with Headbox, we hope that those thinking about holding their event with us get a great feel for what to expect and are just as amazed as they no doubt will be in person when they visit.”

Tottenham Hostspur’s old ground, White Hart Lane, contained over a century of memories, but it could no longer live up to the standards expected in modern football. Spurs deserved a home that could match the club’s history and its status in the Premier League and European football.
The new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is designed to cultivate an extraordinary atmosphere. The spectator experience is incredibly intimate, even with a capacity of 62,850. That’s thanks to stands angled at 35 degrees — the steepest recommended in U.K. guidelines — bringing fans closer to the field than at any comparable modern stadium.
The 17,500-seat South Stand is the country’s largest single-tier stand, designed to generate a powerful ‘wall of sound,’ and includes 5,000 safe standing seats. Populous worked with U2’s sound engineers to optimise the stadium’s acoustics, fine-tuning the reverberation times to amplify the roar of the crowd.
Enhancing the match-day experience for Tottenham Hotspur supporters was central to the design approach. The stadium’s general admission concourse hosts more than 60 concessions and three pub-style feature bars. Within the South Stand, the five-story Market Place atrium is a lively gathering place for fans before and after matches. It features street-food-style eateries, an on-site Beavertown microbrewery, and the longest bar in Europe, stretching the full 65-metre length of the goal line on the pitch.
Populous’ concept designs for the stadium’s premium facilities aimed to unlock hidden potential in underutilised spaces, opening up fresh revenue avenues for the club. This diverse array of private suites, sky lounges, premium lounges, bars, conference facilities and Michelin-star dining options caters to a wide range of budgets and preferences and can host up to 8,000 guests on event days.
I had the full guided tour of the new Spurs stadium, and I can safely say it’s the best football ground I’ve ever been to.
Gary Lineker
Former Spurs Striker and Match of the Day Presenter
Created to be inclusive for everyone, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium features over 250 dedicated elevated wheelchair positions around the seating bowl, 66 fully accessible toilets, and hearing loops that provide audio-descriptive match commentaries. There’s a sensory suite too — a calming environment for supporters on the autistic spectrum or with sensory impairment conditions.
The stadium is the first purpose-built for NFL games outside the U.S., featuring a retractable natural turf pitch that slides under the South Stand in just 25 minutes, revealing an artificial playing surface. This allows American football to take place during the Premier League football season without affecting the quality of the natural turf pitch. The stadium now hosts two regular season NFL games each year as part of an ongoing partnership between the league and Tottenham Hotspur.
The system also offers ideal sightlines for American football by lowering the playing surface relative to the first row of seats, allowing fans to view the action over players and coaching staff on the sidelines. Add to that purpose-designed NFL locker rooms and other bespoke player, staff and media facilities, and the stadium has become a true home away from home for visiting NFL teams.
Outside of football, the adaptability of the stadium has allowed it to host some of the biggest events in sports and entertainment, from a world heavyweight boxing title clash between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk in 2022 to five sellout Beyoncé concerts in 2023.
The wider stadium development scheme encompasses a new visitor centre called the Tottenham Experience, a gym, supermarket and a sixth-form school. Attracting around two million visitors a year, it buzzes with activity, thanks to stadium tours, retail spaces, conference and banquet facilities, cafes and F1 Drive, the first official Formula 1 karting experience, which features 180 metres of track beneath the South Stand. Upon completion, the project will create 3,500 jobs and inject a projected £293 million into the local economy each year, benefitting local businesses and offering fresh opportunities to the community.
Disciplines Provided
Populous was the architect for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium project, responsible for all aspects of the design of the scheme from 2014 and the initial concept stages, through to the completion of construction works in 2019. The full development incorporates the stadium, a new visitor centre and the Club’s new headquarters building. Future developments include an extreme sports building and a hotel.
Populous’ specialist brand activation team delved into the history of the Club’s brand identity to deliver an authentic scheme for environmental graphics. The primary focus involved embedding the Club’s history into the fabric of the building itself, creating statement gestures like the huge concrete letters on the building’s north face spelling out the Club’s motto, which will endure for as long as the stadium is standing.
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium required a creative alternative to traditional wayfinding methods to support the stadium’s complementary mix of uses. At the core of the design is the incorporation of LED technology into classic wayfinding totems to create variable digital signage. This provides the building’s operations team with a significant degree of flexibility, allowing event-specific information to be displayed and last-minute changes or messages to be quickly programmed.
Populous has created a landscaped realm inspired by the Club’s history and the local area, establishing a new ‘greenway’ for fans and the local community to use and explore. All aspects of the development — retail, residential, hotel and experiential — are encompassed in the precinct to create a series of spaces that link together seamlessly.
Populous partnered with its sister company, Jump Studios, to deliver the design for the stadium’s general admission concourse spaces, incorporating 61 bars, eateries and coffee shops. Highlights of the scheme include three pub-style feature bars, an expansive food court inspired by local street markets and the world’s first in-stadium microbrewery, developed in partnership with Beavertown Brewery. Populous and Jump Studios were also responsible for the concept designs for the stadium’s premium hospitality areas.
Continuing Populous’ long-standing partnership with the NFL, our Events team is tasked with delivering the NFL’s annual London Games Series, with matches hosted at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley Stadium. Drawing on the expertise of architects and specialist event planners from across our global practices, the scope of service spans overlay design, accreditation, wayfinding, operations and transportation
