Live traffic flow information. Avoid travel congestion and plan a smarter route.

The A1 and A1(M) are vital roads for connecting different parts of England and Scotland and facilitating trade, tourism and commuting. The road is also one of the most heavily used in Great Britain, with billions of vehicle miles travelled yearly.

However, the traffic volume and flow on the road can vary significantly by location, time and season, so it is vital to check for any updates before travelling.

Someone really needs to look at the signage for the Scotch Corner services. I travel past there quite frequently and since the major upgrade works were completed there don’t seem to be a many advanced signs as there used to be. There’s the usual “services in 3 miles” sort of sign in both directions, but there’s no signage in the last mile or so. There’s no sign to say “services next exit” and the sign prior to the exit has place/destination names on, but no mention of services or “Scotch Corner”. When you actually reach the junction, there is a small sign at the back end of the hatched marked triangle between the main carriageway and slip Road which simply states “rest area”, but by the time you see it, it’s already too late to get onto the exit slip. Prior to the major upgrades there were more signs, signs which included “services” along with all the other junction/exit/destination information and especially a “services” sign at the start of the 3,2,1 countdown markers.

I know where the scotch corner services are and I’ve missed the exit a couple of times, enough for me to put extra care and effort into looking for the signs. The signs just aren’t there, in either direction. Anyone that doesn’t know that section of road doesn’t stand a chance of accessing the services if they’re not using a sat-nav (programed to take them to the services) and relying solely on the expected signs that aren’t there.

Passing through Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle and into Northumberland, the A1 is a vital arterial route into and out of the North East. Latest live A1 traffic news

A1 and a1(m) traffic news and real time updates; get the latest info on a1 traffic delays, roadworks, accidents and snow.

A1 (M) motorway

Even though the A1 is just an A road, it is still one of the most important, most busy routes in the UK. At 410 miles in length it certainly has the scale of a motorway, linking together two capitals in the form of London and Edinburgh, as well as many other towns and cities besides.

Inevitably, the A1’s length makes delays almost inevitable, and these are only made worse by the fact that the A1 consists of just two lanes. So if you’re travelling along some (or heaven forbid, all) of it, you could save yourself a lot of time by staying up to date with the latest traffic news and accident updates available on this page.

• What is a smart motorway?

With roadworks seemingly a permanent fixture on the A1, and with the usual mix of incidents and traffic jams to contend with, it’s far from likely that you’ll complete your journey without any delays. And your odds get even worse when the weather intervenes, especially when it snows. But by using the following information, you should be able to improve your odds…

Below you can find all the latest A1 and A1(M) traffic information via our specially built Twitter feed, which draws real-time alerts from the Highways Agency, official police accounts and other traffic news feeds. We’ve also got a live traffic map so you can pick out incidents as they happen, and there’s a list of important intersections as well...

A1 and A1M live traffic map

The A1 passes through North London and over the M25, then keeps heading North past Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Letchworth, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark, Doncaster, Leeds, Harrogate, York, Ripon, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, Alnwick and Berwick.

•  M25 traffic news

The map below shows live updates on the current problem areas of the A1 and A1M for roadworks, accidents or general congestion causing delays on the road...

A1 and A1(M) History

Dick Turpin and his ilk were the cause of many early hold-ups on the A1 back in the days of stagecoach travel (when it was known as the Great North Road), but you’ll be extremely unlucky to be accosted by a highwayman today. There are plenty of reports of theft of goods and fuel from parked up lorries in certain sections of the A1, but the average motorist can generally expect safe passage.

•  M6 traffic news

However there are still plenty of (often closed) coaching inns along the route that have links to the early days of turnpike travel – including some famous ones like the Ram Jam Inn between Stamford and Grantham.

The A1 was first named as such in 1921 by the Ministry of Transport, but it basically follows a North-South route that has been documented since Roman times.

Driver delay warnings for A1 at Gateshead roadworks

a1 travel news

Drivers are being warned to allow more time for travel along a section of the A1 as the next phase of roadworks is due to start.

From Saturday, a contraflow will be in use near Gateshead between junctions 65 (Birtley) and 66 (Eighton Lodge).

Though the number of lanes will remain the same with no reduction in capacity, National Highways still warned drivers to take care.

It is part of works to improve safety and reduce congestion on the busy stretch of road, with the contraflow expected to be in place until late summer.

National Highways Project Manager, Helen Burrow, said the Birtley to Coal House scheme was "still making good progress".

National Highways are planning to construct new lanes and widen three bridges at Eighton Lodge, as well as carrying out repairs to the structures.

The contraflow will keep drivers and the workforce safe and allow engineers to work on all three bridges at the same time, the government-owned company said.

The Birtley to Coal House scheme also involves widening the A1 south of Gateshead to four lanes, between junction 65 and 67 on the southbound carriageway, and three lanes between junctions on the northbound carriageway.

National Highways have also installed a new footbridge in North Dene - expected to open later this year - and a new Allerdene bridge , as part of the scheme.

Leeds Festival traffic jams warning to drivers

Imagine Dragons perform on stage at Leeds Festival in 2023

Imagine Dragons performing at Leeds Festival in 2023

  • Published 20 August 2024

Drivers have been warned to expect heavy congestion around the Leeds Festival site over the Bank Holiday weekend.

More than 90,000 people are due to attend the event at Bramham Park and several roads nearby will be closed.

National Highways cautioned ticket-holders to allow plenty of time for their journeys and other motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

Operations manager Dave Skupski warned drivers not to underestimate how busy the roads would be.

He said: “Leeds Festival has the second biggest impact on traffic on our network after the British Grand Prix.

“Our message to anyone heading to the festival or using those key routes around Leeds over the weekend is to plan your journey, check traffic conditions before setting out and give yourself plenty of time.

"Follow the signs, and don’t rely on your satnavs.”

The M1, A1(M) and A64 around Leeds are expected to be especially busy as Bramham Park is close to the A1/A64 interchange.

Road closures will be in place at points on the A64, A1M and local roads. Some roads will be subject to 30mph speed limits and bans on U-turns.

The busiest times are expected to be around 23:00 BST on Sunday and 02:00 BST on Bank Holiday Monday, and then from 08:00 BST to 14:00 BST later that day.

Mr Skupski added: “If you’re not planning to attend, please make sure you allow extra time if you’re travelling around this area. If possible, avoid the expected peak festival arrival and departure times.”

There will also be footpath closures through the Bramham Park Estate and along Mangrill Lane bridleway.

Residents living within the affected areas should have received a road closure pass in the post.

Driving California's Scenic Highway One

a1 travel news

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

California's Highway One is a state highway. It runs from Capistrano Beach in Orange County to Leggett in northern Mendocino (Dana Point), a total of about 650 miles. You can tackle it in sections, pick just part of it to see or make the journey into a week-long road trip.

No matter what you have in mind, this guide links to detailed directions for every single mile of it, starting from the south.

Orange and Los Angeles Counties

Highway One begins in the town of Capistrano Beach in Orange County. From there, to Santa Monica and through Malibu, it's a city street.

It takes on several street names but is most often called Pacific Coast Highway (which locals shorten to PCH). Between Manhattan Beach and LAX, it's called Sepulveda. North of the airport to Santa Monica, it's Lincoln Blvd.

The route sometimes follows the coastline, but far more often it passes neighborhoods and mundane strip malls. The best parts of that route are from Laguna Beach to Naples (just south of Long Beach) and from Santa Monica through Malibu to Oxnard.

Santa Monica, Malibu, and Oxnard

One of the most scenic sections of Hwy 1 goes through beautiful Malibu . For the first part of the trip, the road passes the garages and back doors of coastal homes, but north of Pepperdine University it sometimes runs so near to the continent's edge that it feels like you could reach out and dangle your fingers in the water.

Oxnard to San Luis Obispo

North of Oxnard, CA Hwy 1 merges with US Hwy 101. The stretch of 101 between Oxnard and Santa Barbara is especially scenic, with views of the Channel Islands offshore.

Just north of the Gaviota Tunnel (which is north of Santa Barbara), Hwy 101 turns inland, and you won't see the ocean again until you get to Pismo Beach, and then only briefly.

Hwy 1 splits off from Hwy 101 north of Gaviota, passing through Lompoc and Guadalupe before rejoining Hwy 101 just south of Pismo Beach . This 50-mile section is sometimes called the Cabrillo Highway. You could drive it if you want to cover every single inch of the famous highway, but there's little of interest if you're just sightseeing. From Pismo Beach to San Luis Obispo, Highways 1 and 101 are the same.

San Luis Obispo to San Francisco

The road you think of as the Pacific Coast Highway is probably the section between San Luis Obispo and Monterey. Its sights include Hearst Castle , the Big Sur coast , Carmel , Monterey , and Santa Cruz .

Through the City of San Francisco

In the city of San Francisco , Hwy 1 is a street: 19th Avenue. It leads to the Golden Gate Bridge . It's a busy street with little to see and traffic that's more than annoying. You can get through town more easily by merging with I-280 north of Pacifica or by taking CA Hwy 35 north and following the coastline.

Golden Gate Bridge, Marin, Sonoma, and Mendocino

North of the Golden Gate Bridge, the official highway name of Highway 1 is Shoreline Highway. It passes along some dramatic coastline, through scenic Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties . It ends north of Rockport, where it turns inland toward Leggett and disappears.

Tips and Advice

These tips and ideas will help make your trip more pleasant:

  • Check your gas gauge. There's no gasoline available for up to 40 miles in some stretches, especially in Big Sur and north of San Francisco.
  • "Go" when you have a chance. Restrooms are also scarce in those same areas.
  • Allow plenty of time. Assume you will average about 30 miles per hour (45 kph). A trip to Hearst Castle and Big Sur from San Luis Obispo can take most of a day. San Francisco to Mendocino can be a very tiring all-day drive.
  • If anyone in your party suffers from motion sickness, be prepared. If that party is a licensed adult, try letting them drive which helps control nausea.
  • If you are driving Highway One in only one direction, go from south to north if you can. You will be driving on the less knuckle-whitening insides of the curves and views are clearer toward the north.
  • If you are driving the road in both directions (making a round trip to Hearst Castle from Big Sur, for example), avoid crossing traffic to see things on the opposite side of the road. Save them for the return trip instead.
  • CA Hwy 1 is prone to closure due to landslides, especially during rainy winters. Check its condition online or call 800-427-7623 before you go.

It's always good practice to follow these safety tips, but they become even more important along busy CA Hwy 1:

  • Drive defensively. Avoid dangerous situations and allow plenty of distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Buckle up! California law requires it for the driver and all passengers.
  • Pull over if five or more cars are following you. It's also a California law, but only do it when you can pull over safely
  • Don't pass where there are double yellow lines. This rule is more important than ever on the curve-filled sections of the highway where visibility is limited.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has approved another extension of the Route 1 congestion relief project, which allows a portion of the shoulder of the highway in North and South Brunswick to be used as a travel lane during peak travel times.

Starting Aug. 22, between 6 and 10 a.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m., motorists may use the shoulder as a travel lane for a 4 ½-mile stretch of Route 1 northbound and southbound from Route 522/Promenade Boulevard/Stouts Lane in South Brunswick to Thomas Avenue, just north of Finnegan’s Lane, in North Brunswick .

Use of the shoulder will be restricted at all other times, and trucks are not permitted to use the shoulder as a travel lane.

The temporary project, known as Hard Shoulder Running (HSR), will allow the shoulder to be used as a travel lane for nearly seven miles from Thomas Avenue to Independence Way.

Route 1 is two lanes in this section of the highway, causing delays. The goal in use the shoulder as a travel lane during peak periods is to keep traffic flowing, reduce congestion, and improve safety, according to the DOT.

DOT successfully implemented a similar project on 2.3 miles of Route 1 in both directions from Independence Way to Route 522 in 2017.

More: NJ's Route 1 has become an increasingly dangerous commute. Here's what police are doing

The existing HSR section includes several communication features to inform the traveling public about the use of shoulders as travel lanes during peak commuting times. These features include static regulatory and guide signs as well as electronic lane use control signals to indicate whether the shoulder is open or closed as a travel lane.

Because this is a pilot project, there are only pavement markings and static regulatory and guide signs.

After the HSR has been in place for several months, DOT will analyze data to determine if the pilot project successfully provided congestion relief during rush hour, without compromising the safety on Route 1.

This work is part of the $6.6 million state-funded Route 1 Hard Shoulder Running pilot project.

The project began in June with the widening, as well as the milling and paving, of the right shoulder within the project limits so it can be used as a travel lane during designated times to improve safety and relieve congestion on Route 1 in Middlesex County. In addition, the project repaired curb and drainage inlets.
