The 9 best northern lights alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Consider one of these trips for a chance to see this mesmerizing natural wonder.

The Best Northern Lights Alaska Cruises

Northern lights over Alaska landscape.

Getty Images

There's no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon – when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky – is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis – especially locations in the Interior and Arctic regions, such as Coldfoot, Wiseman, Utqiagvik (Barrow) and Nome. Fairbanks is regarded as a top location due to its position directly under the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area in the far north where aurora activity is generally concentrated. The Southcentral region of Alaska, where you'll find Anchorage, Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, also offers basecamps for northern lights viewing.

If you're hoping to see the magic aboard an Alaska cruise in 2024 or 2025, then you just might be in luck. Experts predict the next few seasons will be particularly good for northern lights sightings, due to increased solar activity. While seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed, your best chance of seeing them is during these high-activity solar cycles, which occur about every 11 years.

Find your perfect cruise

When to take a cruise to view the northern lights

The Alaska cruise season falls between May and September, with a few cruise lines extending the season from April to October.

Holland America Line recommends booking a cruise or cruisetour (a combined sea and land package) during the autumnal equinox, or the official start of autumn, which falls around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are more likely around the autumn and spring equinoxes, which could increase your chances of seeing the aurora. For the best views, Holland America advises heading to higher ground in Anchorage , to vantage points like Glen Alps, the Knit River Valley and Point Woronzof.

Princess Cruises also suggests booking your vacation in the fall. September is an ideal month to watch for the spectacle in the sky as the nights start getting longer and darker. The elusive display is most likely to appear on crystal-clear evenings between midnight and 4 a.m. While you can see incredible light shows in Anchorage, consider an extended tour of Fairbanks or the Interior that takes you away from light pollution (such as to Denali National Park & Preserve).

U.S. News has compiled a list of the nine best cruises and cruisetours to give you the optimal chance of viewing these whimsical lights in the sky, with a focus on sailings around the autumnal equinox in 2024 and later dates in September 2025. We've also included an early sailing in April, before the end of the aurora season. (Keep in mind: Many of these trips and itineraries are also available on other dates during the season. Cruise fares were accurate at the time of publication.)

9-Day Denali: Tour D8l

This nine-day land and sea tour on Nieuw Amsterdam includes an opportunity to search for the northern lights in Fairbanks, one of the best places to see them in Alaska (and in the world). Holland America offers a four-hour aurora borealis viewing tour outside the city in a yurt; it operates between the last week of August and mid-September.

If you'd like more options, there's no shortage of tour operators in town that can take you on a northern lights adventure in Fairbanks. You can even fly into town early to stay in the wilderness in an igloo with clear views of the night sky at Borealis Basecamp, located less than 30 miles from Fairbanks. Be sure to notify your hotel that you'd like a wake-up call or a knock on the door if the northern lights are on display.

You'll have more opportunities to see the aurora when you head to Denali National Park & Preserve for a stay at Holland America 's exclusive 60-acre McKinley Chalet Resort, located near the entrance to the park. After a full day exploring the park by ATV or a bucket list flightseeing adventure over Denali, you'll have another chance to see the colorful light display in Alaska's wilderness after midnight. The rest of the cruisetour itinerary includes scenic cruising days, with one spent in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. You'll also call on Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan before disembarking in Vancouver .

14-Day Denali: Tour D3c

This 14-day adventure includes scenic cruising of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord, with stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Seward. You'll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you'll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities.

With the extra time in town, plan to book the Arctic Circle Air Adventure with Northern Alaska Tour Company. This unforgettable journey takes you on a flight over the Yukon River and Brooks Range, just east of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. You'll then land 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the community of Coldfoot and receive an Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate before your return flight to Fairbanks.

7-Day Glacier Discovery Northbound

If you're interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary includes three scenic cruising days, with one day in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, and calls on the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before disembarking in Whittier, which sits roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage.

From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights.

11-Day Denali Explorer – Tour DA4

This 11-day cruisetour begins with a seven-night voyage embarking from Vancouver on Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The itinerary includes three sea days, two of which are dedicated to scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord. You'll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line's direct-to-the-wilderness rail service.

Spending three nights at the lodge – located just outside the entrance to the park – in mid-September will offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing. Keep your fingers crossed for high solar activity and clear, dark skies. Throughout your trip, learn photography tips to capture the mesmerizing display through Princess' North to Alaska Program. After your stay in Denali, you'll take a motor coach to Anchorage and stay overnight in a hotel there to finish up your voyage.

10-Day On Your Own – Tour BBX

The 10-Day On Your Own cruisetour with Princess Cruises begins with three nights on land, including overnights in Fairbanks, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. While at the Mt. McKinley resort, be sure to check out the lodge's treehouse. Designed by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," this vantage point offers impressive views of Denali – the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level.

Before heading off to bed, get an update on aurora activity from the tracker on your smartphone, especially if you have clear skies that night; the app My Aurora Forecast & Alerts has excellent reviews. Request a wake-up call to have the Princess lodge staff call your room if the dazzling bands of light begin to dance in the sky. The next day, after traveling to Whittier by motor coach, you'll embark on your cruise to Vancouver aboard Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess.

The voyage from Whittier includes three sea days for relaxing activities on board the ship, with two days of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier and in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. During your time in Glacier Bay, park rangers will board the ship to offer commentary about this captivating wilderness area's pristine glaciers and abundant wildlife. Younger cruisers and teens will also appreciate learning about this spectacular place through the Junior Ranger program, which features interactive games, activities and presentations. (All cruise ships visiting the park participate in this program with the National Park Service.) Ports of call for the rest of the journey include Icy Strait Point or Skagway (depending on the cruise), then Juneau and Ketchikan. The voyage ends in Vancouver.

The Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour

Celebrity's pre-cruise national parks adventure takes guests on a wildlife viewing quest to destinations in the north and the Interior where you can watch for the aurora. The 12-night trip begins in Fairbanks with a free day to explore.

Consider a trip to the University of Alaska Museum of the North, which features exhibits on Arctic dinosaurs, diverse wildlife, Alaska Native cultures and 2,000 years of Alaska art. You could also visit the impressive collection of antique cars and clothing at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, or take a walk with the reindeer into the woods at Running Reindeer Ranch. The second day in town includes a Riverboat Discovery ride and a tour of the city, as part of the cruisetour.

On the third day, you'll board the Wilderness Express (a glass-domed railcar) for the ride to Denali. Then, you'll embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in search of the park's grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Be sure to put your name on the list before bedtime to get a wake-up call for aurora activity. You'll also have one evening in Anchorage, where you can arrange for a northern lights tour, and one night in Seward before setting sail on Celebrity Summit the next morning. Highlights of the voyage include cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage as well as stopping in Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. You'll disembark in Vancouver.

13-Day Denali Explorer – Pre-Cruise Cruisetour

Norwegian Cruise Line's six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you'll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher's kennel. You'll also have plenty of time in Denali National Park to book a flightseeing tour, go whitewater rafting, or take a hike with a park ranger to look for bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves and other local wildlife before starting your cruise in Seattle .

Norwegian Encore will call on Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska. The Mill at Ward Cove near Ketchikan is a newly built cruise ship port that serves as a jumping-off point for outdoor activities in the Tongass National Forest, from hiking and biking to kayaking and sea cycling. You can even pick up souvenirs, grab a bite to eat and sample a cold Alaska brew at the mill. The cruise itinerary also includes one day at sea and a stop in Victoria, British Columbia, before you disembark in Seattle.

7-Night Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Consider this seven-day cruise on Norwegian Bliss if you prefer to travel early in the spring and take your chances at catching the northern lights toward the end of aurora season, which falls around April 21. This round-trip itinerary from Seattle is one of the earliest sailings of the year to visit the Great Land and features two sea days, with one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. You'll also visit Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan (Ward Cove) and Victoria before disembarking in Seattle.

Juneau will offer one of the best opportunities during the cruise for seeing the northern lights, although chances are dependent on the weather and solar activity. There are several apps and websites with real-time updates for aurora tracking, including My Aurora Forecast & Alerts. If the skies are clear in the evening and the forecast looks promising, ask guest relations if there's a sign-up sheet to get a call or a knock on the door in the event of aurora activity.

12 Night Mountain Panorama Adventure Cruisetour 5B (Pre Tour)

This 12-night cruisetour with Royal Caribbean International begins with an overnight in Anchorage before boarding the Wilderness Express, where you'll have a glass-domed rail car for the journey to Talkeetna. The quirky community of Talkeetna is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Alaska town of Cicely in the 1990s show "Northern Exposure." It's also an excellent base for chasing the aurora – especially at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where you'll be staying.

After an overnight at the lodge, your tour moves on to Denali, where you can search for wildlife by day and look for the aurora at night. Another evening on land at Hotel Alyeska in the remote town of Girdwood affords more opportunities to chase the finnicky lights before heading to Seward to board your ship, Radiance of the Seas .

Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver. While there are plenty of activities, dining venues, bars and lounges on board to keep you entertained all night long, be sure to save up enough energy to wake up in the middle of the night should you get a call to see the magical natural wonder that is the northern lights.

Hundreds cruise Philadelphia streets in the 15th annual Philly Naked Bike Ride

AP logo

PHILADELPHIA -- Hundreds of people in various states of undress cruised the streets of Philadelphia to cheers from onlookers Saturday evening in the 15th annual Philly Naked Bike Ride.

The annual ride, which started in 2009, is billed as promoting cycling as a key form of transportation and fuel-conscious consumption. It is also meant to encourage body positivity. Organizers stress, however, that participants aren't required to ride completely in the buff, telling them to get "as bare as you dare."

Organizers said the ride wasn't limited only to bicycles but welcomed "all forms of human-powered transportation" such as rollerblades or skates, skateboards and scooters. They also point to a code of conduct that bars any kind of physical or sexual harassment.

The course changes each year but generally highlights city landmarks. This year, riders assembled in the city's large Fairmount Park, some getting themselves adorned with body paint, before starting a 12-mile (19 kilometer) route down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, past historic City Hall to tony Rittenhouse Square and then into south Philadelphia before heading back north around the U.S. Mint and ending in a west Philadelphia park near Drexel University.

The ride used to be held in September, often in temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21.1 degrees Celsius), but enough of the naked riders mentioned feeling chilly that it was moved to August several years ago. The 2020 ride was called off because of the pandemic.

NJ Transit is free starting Monday. Here's what you need to know

Portrait of Kristie Cattafi

NJ Transit riders' wallets will get a break on Monday when a "fare holiday" begins.

From Aug. 26 through Sept. 2, all fares will be waived on all NJ Transit modes of transportation.

The free week comes after a recent 15% fare  increase  in July, the first in nine years, with plans for 3% annual increases moving forward. Riders using expiring discount programs have seen even steeper hikes.

"The fare holiday is a gesture of sincere appreciation for our customers’ continued loyalty and patronage, especially during a period when the service has not consistently met their expectations or our own," Gov. Phil Murphy said. "We recognize the impacts these service issues have had over the past few months and remain committed to improving the travel experience for our customers."

How the NJ Transit 'fare holiday' works

Customers are not required to purchase or present tickets to travel during this period. Tickets will be required for travel again beginning Sept. 3.

Monthly pass holders who have already purchased an August pass, valid through the end of the month, will automatically receive a 25% discount on their September monthly pass purchase through the NJ Transit mobile app or at ticket vending machines or ticket windows.

Summer of problems on NJ Transit

NJ Transit had a number of service disruptions that plagued customers, attributed to Amtrak overhead wire issues, disabled trains and a brush fire.

The agency recorded a 69% on-time performance rate in June, significantly lower than the usual 80%. The service disruptions were largely attributed to issues with Amtrak's infrastructure, which is responsible for two-thirds of the delays. However, Murphy emphasized that NJ Transit is addressing these challenges with daily meetings and working groups, alongside a $300 million federal grant awarded to Amtrak to repair overhead wires.

Short-term solutions include NJ Transit personnel increasing equipment inspections on platforms, and Amtrak inspecting and repairing overhead wires, track signal systems and substations along the Northeast Corridor.

The River Line light rail service has not been meeting performance standards in recent weeks, and NJ Transit added buses to improve service. The agency is also holding its contracted operator accountable to repair and upgrade the light rail vehicles, aiming to restore reliable weekday service as quickly as possible.

Port Canaveral budget projects record revenue, profit, boosted by cruise expansion

Portrait of Dave Berman

Port Canaveral officials are expecting the growing cruise sector to produce record revenue and profits for port next year.

Port Canaveral Chief Financial Officer Jeff Long is projecting that the port will have operating revenue of $210.92 million in the 2024-25 budget year, which begins Oct. 1, up 12.7% from the current year.

Profits are expected to rise 17.4% to $70.15 million.

The port also plans to increase its staff by 27 in the next year, mostly to handle increased cruise passenger volume.

How does the $210.92 million in operating revenue break down?

  • Cruise ship and cruise passenger parking revenue will account for $175.35 million of the total revenue, or 83.1% of the total. The projected $21.63 million increase in cruise-related revenue accounts for most of the overall projected $23.77 million increase in port overall operating revenue. Cruise ship dockings generate wharfage, dockage, line-handling and other fees.
  • Cargo will account for $23.56 million.
  • Leases will account for $4.93 million from about 50 tenants.
  • Parks and recreation will account for $3.94 million, primarily from Jetty Park camping and recreational parking.
  • Other revenue will account for $3.14 million, primarily from fees collected from commercial vehicles, such as shuttles, taxis, and Uber and Lyft vehicles

What is the reason for the increase in cruise revenue?

Cruise lines are putting more ships and larger ships at Port Canaveral.

There will be a total of 1,023 multiday cruise ship sailings out of Port Canaveral in 2024-25. That includes 912 sailings by ships based at Port Canaveral and 111 port-of-call stops by ships based at other ports.

Long said Carnival and Disney each will account for about 400,000 more passengers in 2024-25. The port collects a fee each time a passenger boards or disembarks from a cruise ship.

Two new cruise lines will debut at Port Canaveral with seasonal sailings ― Celebrity and Princess . The Caribbean Princess begins sailing on Nov. 27, and Celebrity Equinox begins sailing on Dec. 3. Each will account for about 100,000 passengers in 2024-25.

How busy will the port be?

Long said there will by 84 days in the next budget year when five or six cruise ships will be in port. That's up from 39 in the current budget year.

During the winter, there will be a record 16 cruise ships based at Port Canaveral, up from the previous record of 13.

What other new cruise ships are coming to Port Canaveral?

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said the next ship joining the Port Canaveral lineup will be the Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas (seasonal, starting Nov. 26); followed by the Carnival Venezia (seasonal, starting Dec. 18); the Disney Treasure (year-round, starting Dec. 21); the Norwegian Aqua (seasonal, starting April 26, 2025); and the Royal Caribbean Star of the Seas (year-round, starting August 2025). The Treasure, Aqua and Star of the Seas all are new ships making their debuts at Port Canaveral.

"We've got a lot of ships happening between now and the end of the year," Murray said. "They're really driving the popularity of the port. It gives new options that our cruise guests have been looking for."

When the Star of the Seas enters service, Port Canaveral with have the world's largest ship (the Star) and the world's third-largest ship (Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas).

How big a deal is cruise parking revenue?

It's big, accounting for 27.8% of total projected cruise revenue, or $48.81 million. That's up $3.98 million from 2023-24. Parking costs $17 a day, plus tax.

The port is constructing two garages that will come online in November ― a 1,969-space garage near Cruise Terminal 6 and a 1,086-space garage near Cruise Terminal 10 ― to handle the increased demand. That will bring the port's total garage parking facilities to about 10,000 spaces.

How is the cargo business doing?

It remains strong, with the top commodities including petroleum and other transportation fuels; lumber and other forest products; slag; limestone; granite; salt; and fertilizer. A total of 6.3 million tons of commodities are expected at Port Canaveral in 2024-25.

What about the port's operating expenses?

They are projected to rise to $136.11 million in the 2024-25 budget year, up 11.0% from $122.58 million in the current budget year.

The major factors for the increase include increases in salaries and benefits; service contract expenses for port facilities; increases in cost for law enforcement and fire protection because of increased cruise passenger volume; computer support costs; maintenance and custodial costs; and cruise-related marketing.

Will Port Canaveral be hiring more people?

Yes. Long said the port plans to increase its staff by 27 in the next budget year, boosting the total staff to 287. Of those new jobs, 15 are in cruise operations, and six are in facilities and maintenance.

About $2.3 million of the increased operating expenses is related to the staff additions.

How will the port be spending its profits?

On capital projects. The port has $173.95 million in capital projects in its plans for 2024-25, including about $88 million in new projects and $86 million in projects carrying forward from the current budget year.

"The monies that we make, 100% of those are just turned around and invested in the port, to make the port better, stronger, to impact the community and the state from an economic perspective," Long said. "So that's our mission, and that's what every dollar will be spent for."

Russia launches 'nightmare' deadly drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, Kyiv says

Fifteen regions throughout Ukraine were struck, a member of parliament said.

LONDON -- Russia launched a deadly large-scale attack across Ukraine on Monday, sending drones and cruise and ballistic missiles toward at least 15 regions, Ukrainian officials said.

The strikes were among the largest such aerial attacks since the war began in 2022, with Russia using at least 127 missiles and 109 drones in an attack that lasted over eight hours, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"And like most previous Russia strikes, this one is just as dastardly, targeting critical civilian infrastructure," Zelenskyy said in Ukrainian, adding later that Russian President Vladimir Putin "can only do what the world allows him to do."

cruises sep 15

Critical infrastructure, the energy sector and railroads were targeted in the attack, Zelenskyy said.

"What is happening now in Kyiv is unbelievable horror. Pray for us," Kira Rudick, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament, said on social media. She later added, "What happened today? Nightmare."

At least seven people were killed and at least 47 others injured as a result of the attacks across Ukraine, the Ukrainian State Emergency Service said in a post on Telegram.

Out of the 47 people injured, four of them were children, the Ukrainian State Emergency Service said.

MORE: Massive drone attacks exchanged between Moscow, Kyiv: Officials

Some residents in Kyiv, the capital, took shelter in the city's subways as Russia launched its "massive" attack across the country, Olga Stefanishyna, deputy prime minister, said on social media . She included a local news video that appeared to show throngs of people standing along a train platform.

Kyiv was among the 15 areas throughout Ukraine struck in the attack, which began early in the morning and continued into the afternoon, lasting for at least 12 hours, officials said.

"Attack UAVs are attacking Kyiv from various directions right now," the Kyiv City Military Administration said, referring to uncrewed aerial vehicles, or drones.

The administration added, "Air defense soldiers have already destroyed a total of about one-and-a-half dozen enemy drones that were headed for the capital. The air alert in Kyiv has been going on for more than 6 hours."

cruises sep 15

The strikes followed Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations on Saturday. Russia had on Saturday struck several pieces of Ukrainian infrastructure, knocking out power for many. The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv was helping restore power on Sunday after Russia's "barbaric attacks," according to the U.S. State Department's official Russian social media accounts.

Russia in its Monday attack also targeted energy infrastructure in an attempt to "terrorize all of Ukraine" and to "deprive Ukrainians of electricity," the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the country's parliament, said. Engineers were working midmorning to restore power to many, the parliament said.

"The desire to destroy our energy will cost the Russians dearly -- their infrastructure," Andrii Yermak, an adviser to Zelenskyy, said in Ukrainian on the messaging app Telegram on Monday.

The White House condemned Russia's massive assault, calling it a "classic play" by Vladimir Putin.

MORE: Former US soldier explains why he volunteered to fight with Ukraine

"This is a classic play out of the playbook for Vladimir Putin to go after energy infrastructure, particularly as he knows the weather's about to turn, and people are going to need heat and power a lot more as things get colder in Ukraine," National Security communications adviser John Kirby told reporters Monday afternoon.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms, Russia's continued war against Ukraine and its efforts to plunge the Ukrainian people into darkness as the fall here sits upon us, and as winter approaches," Kirby added.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday it had carried out a "massive strike with long-range precision weapons," including some that were launched from the sea. Russian drones were sent to strike "critical energy infrastructure facilities that supported the operation of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine," the ministry said in a statement.

"All designated targets were hit," the ministry said.

cruises sep 15

Several fatalities were reported after strikes hit homes in the Dnipropetrovsk region and an apartment block in the Lutsk city center, officials said.

Rescue services extinguished 22 fires across the country, according to the Ukrainian State Emergency Service.

MORE: Russian supply bridges destroyed by Ukraine amid Kursk incursion, Kyiv says

After the strikes, blackouts started in multiple regions in Ukraine, including Kyiv, Volyn, Rivne, Odesa and Chernihiv, among others, according to local authorities. In the Zhytomyr region, water supply has stopped due to power outages, local media reported.

Public electric transportation operations stopped in Odesa due to power supply disruptions, local authorities said.

There were "no significant damages" at the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant, which was targeted in Russia's attack, the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Ruslan Kravchenko, said.

ABC News' Joe Simonetti and Oleksiy Pshemyskyi contributed to this report.

Barcelona is the cultural heartland of Spain, yet its first language is Catalan, the native tongue of the proudly independent Catalonia region. Stroll down the shady, tree-lined Ramblas between street musicians and elegant bistros. Then perhaps visit the venerable Gothic cathedral, Picasso Museum or enjoy the architectural genius of Antonio Gaudi's Church of the Holy Family.

The most populated city in France after Paris, Marseille has all the sights and sounds of a Mediterranean melting pot, which it has been ever since the Phocaean Greeks invaded around 600 B.C. Its industrial docks rub shoulders with the picturesque old harbor, the Vieux Port, founded by the Greeks 2,600 years ago. Packed with colorful fishing boats and yachts, the Vieux Port is the heart of Marseille.

The walled inner town of St. Malo dominates the view as you sail into the harbour of this historic city, making this ancient naval port one of France's top tourist attractions. It is possible to walk the perimeter of the inner town on the ramparts on top of the walls. The walk not only gives fine views of St. Malo itself but also up the valley of the Rance towards Dinard and out over the numerous off shore islets.

The world's most famous casino (a must see even if you do not gamble), glittering nightlife, first-class dining and shopping, make it one of the world's most glamorous destinations. The casino is an elaborate Italianate structure capped by four towers and a copper-tin roof.

From Livorno, your path leads through the rolling green hills of Tuscany to Florence, the flower of the Renaissance. The creative explosion happened right here, with masterworks by Michelangelo, Brunelleschi and Botticelli now landmarks of daily life. Ufizzi, Academmia, il Duomo: the art treasures of a golden age are commonplace to blessed Florentines. Livorno also serves as the gateway to Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower.

Civitavecchia is just moments from Rome, Italy's Eternal City. One of the most geographically perfect ports in the world, Civitavecchia boasts a number of compelling area attractions. Stroll through the streets of the medieval town of Tarquinia. View the resplendent Madonnina at the Resort of Pantano.

One of the most spectacular bays in the world lies in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius. Visit the San Carlo Opera House and the cathedral of San Janarious, or tour the ancient ruins in the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Originally settled by Greece, Syracuse (Siracusa) is famous as the Greek headquarters in ancient Sicily and site of one of the world's first democratic revolutions. Much of the architecture only dates back to the early seventeenth century, due to an earthquake. Visit the island of Ortygia and the Great Harbour. See what remains from antiquity in Neapolis, including a Greek theater, a Roman amphitheatre and altar, the Euryalus fort, and the Baroque cathedral. Visit the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the gorgeous Montalto Palace as well.

Take advantage of the many on board activites during your day at sea. You'll have more than enough to fill your day!

With its steep volcanic flanks looming straight up from the sea, and the tiny white village of Thira clinging high atop the cliffs, Santorini is perhaps the most breathtaking and legendary of all the Greek Isles. To the south is Akrotiri, where recent Minoan excavations support the theories that Santorini might be the fabled lost continent of Atlantis.

This charming, picturesque resort where Antony and Cleopatra used to vacation is best known as the port for the ancients ruins of Ephesus - one of the world's most wondrous archaeological sites. Explorations should include such masterpieces as the Great Amphitheatre, where St. Paul addressed the Ephesians, the Library of Celsus, and the temples of Athena and Apollo - all connected by marble streets rutted by the wheels of countless chariots.

The narrow passageways of Mykonos are a twisted maze of whitewashed houses, miniature churches, lazy windmills, and tiny cafes serving up Greek specialties. Sample the freshest squid or lobster just snatched from the blue Aegean Sea, or shop for typical flokati rugs.

Piraeus is the seaport for Athens, the capital of western civilization, which boasts a fantastic mix of classical ruins and vivacious modern life. In a single day, you can climb the hill of the Acropolis to wonder at the Parthenon, join the lively Athenians in Constitution Square, and then find a welcoming taverna for some spirited bizouki music, plenty of ouzo to drink, and with luck, energetic Greek dancing.
