Semi Automatic Rifles

Watch as our old buddy hickok45 takes his new ruger mini-30 to the range.

' src=

For those of you who are familiar with the Mini-14 by Ruger, you know that is an incredibly well made and reliable rifle. It is literally a scaled-down version of the M-14, but instead of firing the 7.62 NATO cartridge, it fires the .223 (or 5.56) caliber round.

Well, the Mini-30 fires the old Soviet 7.62×39, the same round used in the AK-47. So, if you’re  fan and owner of an AK-47, then your Ruger Mini-30 can fire that same ammunition. I know that might seem a little redundant, if you already own an AK, then why on earth would you spend your money to by the Mini-30? We’re just speaking hypothetically here.

The Ruger Mini-30 is definitely a first-rate rifle, it’s just a fun rifle because of its compact size, trivial weight, and beefy caliber. It’s also very practical for several situations like hunting (especially ‘Hog’ hunting), plinking, and self-defense.

Here is some info on this rifle from Ruger’s website ruger.com :

  • Stock: Hardwood
  • Front Sight: Blade
  • Rear Sight: Adjustable
  • Barrel Length: 18.50″
  • Overall Length: 37.50″

  • Twist: 1:10″ RH
  • Weight: 7 lb.
  • Length of Pull: 13″
  • UPC7-36676-05804-4

Suggested Retail: $1319.00

  • Simple, rugged, Garand-style action with breech bolt locking system, a fixed-piston gas system and self-cleaning moving gas cylinder gives unparalleled reliability under harsh operating conditions.
  • Cold hammer-forged barrel results in ultra-precise rifling that provides exceptional accuracy and longevity.
  • Integral scope mounts, machined directly on the solid steel receiver, provide a stable mounting surface for included scope rings, eliminating a potential source of looseness and inaccuracy in the field.
  • Accurate sighting system with ghost ring rear aperture sight and a non-glare, protected blade front sight.
  • Receiver is drilled and tapped for mounting the included Picatinny rail.
  • Also includes: two magazines; Picatinny rail; scope rings.

Now that you’ve checked-out the specs, sit back as Hickok45 does some plinking down range.

I saw it but what I love about it, is that he proves that Accuracy is not an issue, it proved to me that those who can not shoot at a distance are morons who never fired a gun that required them to self adjust, I get so sick of the younger Generations getting guns, and expecting them to be dead on at 50 yards with no change to how you hold the firearm. A 6 o'clock hold is not something that even most kids my age understand but I do, because I grew up around guns. still its nice to see that with a little understanding of ones Judge you can still shoot stuff at 50 yards, and make the nay sayers eat S***

hickok45 range tour

I subscribe to hickok45. That guy is just fun to watch. The 000Buck is impressive! Everything else, not so much. .45 Colt seemed pretty accurate, though. @scrabtree6: Totally agree with you on nutnfancy.

hickok45 range tour

Stop me if I'm wrong, but isn't his big gong setup at 200 yds? That's pretty impressive accuracy. I did catch him in one mistake though - he said he needed to put a shorter front sight on it, but what he needs is a taller one. Hickok is definitely one of my favorites - I love his 'awe shucks' attitude ;D.

I have the Judge Night Court and was happy to see the test.he also has a radio show...you can catch it on youtube as well

hickok45 range tour

the video i was most impressed with was his glock 23 vid where he hits the gong at like 240yards. just to prove that its not the pistol but more the shooter that decides what is accurate.

what is with Glock? People love them or hate them. Miss Kitty's step-Dad is a retired IRS Undercover that swears by his Glock 19, I guess number one issue in his time. I was on one of the forums a few days back and the motto was 'friends dont let friends shoot glock' I'm a wheel man who wonders why.

its a wonderful firearm that is slightly overpriced. has an odd grip angle. but goes bang every time. but some times goes KAAABOOOOOMMM!!!! it really is a love or hate gun. i will own one. but it will probably be near the last pistol i buy

hickok45 range tour

In polymer I'm more likely to go with the Springfield XDms. The grip angle fits my hand much better than the Glock does. I did enjoy hickock45's commentary video on 'accuracy'. As to the Judge? Can't say I'm much of a fan personally. But at short range it looks to be 'effective' for what it is. To me it just looks like something a cartoon character carries -lol

hickok45 range tour

That's the first time I have seen one of his video's and enjoyed it, I'll be watching more thanks.

(That's for Dewey) That plateau can mire one down with distractions ranging from equipment to reloading, to trigger jobs and custom grips.  Again, check your journal and look at the targets.  This is where the mental game starts to come into play as well.  Go back through the basics one at a time for a couple of weeks or month at at time just like above, only in more detail.   And really work on seeing the wobble ALL THE WAY through the shot and then drive the gun back to the center for your recovery even if its just a single slow fire shot.  Minor loss of focus on the wobble at the end of the trigger process can be an indicator that one is trying to "pick off " good shot especially in slow fire.  And I've seen this little trap catch a lot of Experts.  They know how to shoot a consistent 9 or 10 for the most part, but when it does not come within the optimum time they try to keep on with that shot. Try shooting as though you're driving the wobble to the center of your aiming area, not just holding the gun out there and waiting for it to settle down.  That's just one example of trying something different related to a fundamental.  Don't be afraid to explore applications for fundamentals, don't worry about new guns.  Also from the mental standpoint, for slow fire work on getting the shot off or starting over.  Tell your self its ok to start over, you've still got a potential 10 points in the gun rather than a 7 on the target. Mentally, for TF / RF work on keeping the trigger moving consistently and believing the wobble will take care of itself.  As Brian Enos and I agree on; keeping the trigger ahead of the sights will produce more center shots that trying the make the trigger catch up to the sights.    And yes I could not hit the ground when I started and I learned the basics of accuracy through IPSC / USPSA and bowling pins and explored all the way to air and free pistol.  It's all just a formula that has to be balanced for each sport.  How much precision is needed in sight alignment versus how much time you have to complete the course of fire. Bullseye has more time, but requires some more time.  The main issue is that usually it's too much time and that's another obstacle in the precision shooting sport versus action types. In action shooting, beginning competitors usually err the other way, trying to shoot faster than they can see.  CR

straybrit wrote: On that point - any tips on where to start looking for improvement? After years of no real shooting (injuries then the plague) I've finally got back to more or less where I was before (low to mid 2500s if nothing goes wrong) although I need to work on consistency of grip and focus. I know this is a "how long is this piece of string that you can't see" question - but is there a good progression of where you would look for changes that could lead to improvements. I'm guessing it's too individualized to be generic - but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Now who wouldn’t just love to have a range like hickok45 has. Thought some of you would get a smile from this. This might be better than sex for some of us, what did I just say!!! but it would be nice to have the land and the state where you can do this.

Is hickok45 the standard for long range pistol shooting?

  • Add to quote

Or the exception? Watching his videos makes me feel like I need to be able to shoot a long ways in order to even own a pistol.

I think that honor still belongs to Elmer.

Question still stands.

hickok45 range tour

BTW distances always look much greater on video. If you were actually at his place the targets might not look as challenging. He's still a great shot though.

that gong is set at 80 yds if i'm not mistaken.

He shoots a 230 yard gong with pistols too. It's not fair.

If you have a range and time, you can duplicate anything that he can do. It's all about practice.

I bet he has shot over 1 million rounds.

Eh........... I thought everyone could shoot at least that well............... :biglaugh:

hickok45 range tour

I have it on hearsay that Hickok45's end of the world is getting heavy enough to cause a polar shift.

And I think he shoots with a cross dominant eye. He really is a good shot. I love his reviews.

Yes he is left eye dominant.

WildBill63 said: I think 80 yds. is amazing with a 4-5 inch handgun, of course most of us Tennesseans can shoot almost that well. About 75 yds. is my limit though. : Click to expand...

Hickoks video on accuracy is my favorite. Dude tells it like it is.

Hickok45 is a good shot because he has good technique and is consistent. We all can learn from his demonstrations. One of his best points is sight alignment. Notice how he locks into a good isosceles stance, then bobs the gun up and down a little. This does two things - trains you to maintain sight alignment regardless of involuntary arm movement, and allows you to line up on targets that are smaller than the front sight. Secondly, he calls his shots, based on where the front sight was at the time of discharge. He can't actually see the bullet strike like his viewers can, because the camera zooms. If the sights are really off, he switches to a nearby target, and reads the impact point. Finally, he is an expert at "Kentucky Windage" - reading where the point of impact is relative to the sight picture, and offsetting the front sight to compensate (while maintaining alignment). There is a difference between just shooting and practicing. To practice, you do the hard things until you get them cold, and learn from your mistakes. Treat yourself to humble pie, and shoot double-action all afternoon. Shoot until you can group them nearly as close as in single-action. Take time to analyze what you're doing wrong. Hickok45 nails those 5" metal plates at 20 yards, DA with a 3" revolver. How's that for a challenge?

Every gun he puts on the Tube is presighted to his personal shooting style Click to expand...
richpetrone said: I would like to see the range, the size of the targets, and how many times they film his attempts before they decide to use the one selected. Click to expand...

Well, geez, if all you guys are that good, and all it takes is practice, how about showing us your 200 yd shots with a baby Glock?

First I'd have to be foolish enough to own a Glock, much less shoot one. I'll be happy to post my 200 yard shots with an officer frame 1911 in .38 Super.I'll be at the range Thursday, with camera.

hickok45 range tour

If you cant make hits at longer ranges once you figure your holdover than you probably suck at the 20 and 50 yard line. Now walking out in a field and hitting cowpies, offhand at unknown distances, amounts to dumb luck. But knowing your holds, not shooting in the wind the principle is the same. On my one gong, with a Les Baer I aim along the left side of a tree farther up the bank behind it exactly level with a branch. Guess what? When the wind isnt blowing and Im having a steady day, I get more hits than misses.

There was a popular gunsmith on the boards for awhile. He died not too long ago. He once stated that he put 7 out of 8 rounds into a man-sized log at 400 yards out of a 9X23 Commander, standing "on his own two feet, like a man". When I called him on it, he threatened to kill me....lol Looking forward to video from you long range pistol shooters.

A couple of things: 1. I love his videos. I continually re-watch several of them as I consider buying a gun he reviews. 2. Blow up a vid full-screen at 720P and you'll notice things get a lot closer. 3. Hickok is a really great shot. 4. I worked in TV for years, and two people sitting at a desk with knees nearly touching seem like a mile apart on screen. Same effect with his range. Things look much further than in real life. 5. 80+ yds with a 4" barrel may as well be a mile away. 6. If you look at an aerial shot of the range, you'll find trenches where TNoutdoors9 (Thomas) sneaks around on hands an knees with a small hammer banging on targets to make it sound like Hickok is hitting more than he does. (Ok, #6 was a joke).

Some people are comical. Just like archers who claim online they shoot 4 inch groups at 80 yards all day long. I been shooting a bow since I was 9 and I wish I were that good lol.

After a few thousand rounds, you start to gain some experience and, if you gain enough, the process of firing a gun and actually hitting what you aim at starts to acquire nuance that you were not aware of a few thousand rounds ago. From there, you gain a bit more insight. That process goes on for years and years and, if you are paying attention, the nuance gets a bit more subtle and your consistency goes way up. Years ago, I got involved in handgun metallic silhouette shooting. A difficult sport with some very expensive guns involved. I had the best available guns for each of the classes and, when I started out, I flat sucked. I then learned about sight alignment and maintaining it. Got a little better. Trigger control came next and I made a big leap. Hadn't hit 40 for 40 yet but did manage a 39 with my production gun, a 10" Contender in 7mm TCU. Then came the concept of follow through and my scores again went up. Got a 40 with the Contender and a 39 with each of my other guns except for standing, at which I still pretty much sucked. Then came the big revelation that took me to International class in everything. What was it? Grip on the gun and consistency of grip. WHaaaat? I hold my gun the same all the time. No you don't. I'll bet Hickock45 does. When you have enough time behind the trigger and learn a bit about all these things and how they effect accuracy and can put it all together shot after shot after shot, you too will be able to amaze your friends and viewers.

It's all about practice. Nothing more. If anyone thinks that there's some mystical ability at work with his shooting, they are delusional. It's about time spent doing something properly. Some might accomplish it with only a little practice, some might take a lot, but I haven't seen any of his videos in which he does anything that's Bob Munden-level or anything really astounding. He loves shooting, has a nice private range where he gets to do it, and has obviously spent some serious time there. I can remember back in the 80's when I got my first formal instruction in shooting how I thought that some of what I saw was beyond my ability and was really impressed by it. As I practiced (again, properly, though not always), I started being able to do those things that had impressed me so much and then I was not as impressed by them because I realized it was just a matter of time spent.

Has he ever mentioned participating in any handgun competitions, timed and targets scored, against other shooters? Anyone ever competed at one with him? Mark

Several times.Hickok has said he shot IDPA and Cowboy.

Just as an aside, I shot more rounds the last two years than Rob Vogel. If it's just about how much time is spent, I spent more. And Bob is worlds above my abilities.

He's also much younger than you and sheer round count does not equate with level of skill.

Yes he mentions he use to compete in many of his videos.

We're all gun people that have been around gun people that can just simply shoot great. I know a few that just 'get it' when sighting and pull he trigger. It's a combination of God given skill and practice to translate the gun's function into a bullet's impact on the target downrange. Hickok45 is one of the best.

Cuts are pretty obvious in videos. Click to expand...

I think some of you are missing the point. I'm not sure anyone is claiming there is anything 'mystical' about him, nor is anyone saying that he didn't get to where he is with practice. Some of you think that you could theoretically get to the same position that he is in; that's great for you. There is a great difference between talkers and doers. Of course not all of us have a range in our backyard and have the opportunity to put massive amounts of lead down range. However, the difference between the pos(t)ers here and Hickok is that he is actually doing it. I don't care if you could do the same thing. Heck, I believe in my abilities enough to know that with the same amount of range time and experience, I could do the same thing (40 years down the road). However, Hickok is ACTUALLY doing it. No theoreticals or figuratives, the guy is actually doing it. That's all that's being recognized here, and as a fellow shooter and someone who genuinely enjoys the hobby/sport, I appreciate his videos with his insight and his candor. Give credit where credit is due instead of trying to cut the guy down to make yourself look better (it's not working).
