The three best bank accounts with travel insurance bolted on: We pick our favourites and whether they're worth paying for

  • Some bank accounts include annual worldwide travel insurance
  • They often also include car breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance
  • Although there is a monthly cost, having such an account may make sense

Many Britons will feel a bank account isn't something they're prepared to pay for - after all, most current accounts are 'free'.

However, some packaged bank accounts offer a host of benefits that added together could justify their monthly cost.

The typical perks include free annual worldwide travel insurance, car breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance, often with family members included.

There is also the convenience factor of having three insurance policies taken care of saving both time and effort in having to organise it separately.

Some bank accounts charge a monthly fee, but throw in perks such as annual worldwide travel insurance.

Some bank accounts charge a monthly fee, but throw in perks such as annual worldwide travel insurance.

Michelle Stevens, banking expert at comparison site Finder, says: 'If you and your family are frequent travellers, then a current account with packaged travel insurance could be well worth the monthly fee, especially given the rising cost of travel insurance premiums in the last two years.

'But before signing up to any premium current account, it’s important you check that the terms of the travel insurance policy - as well as the other account features and perks - suit your needs.'

She adds: 'Another benefit of getting free travel insurance with a current account is that a lot of people usually forgo it - up to 8.6million in 2019 - which is not an advisable move.

'If you get seriously injured abroad then the bill can reach hundreds of thousands of pounds, so having travel insurance included with a current account may result in a lot of people getting covered who may not have done so otherwise.'

We pick our three favourite current account deals for travel insurance, taking into account the monthly cost and the additional perks on offer.

1.  Nationwide Flex Plus

This account offers worldwide travel insurance as well as mobile phone and European breakdown cover.

It does come with a £13 monthly charge, which, compared to other packaged bank accounts looks relatively cheap.

Its worldwide family travel insurance, includes winter sports, golf, weddings and business cover.

Nationwide offers worldwide travel, mobile phone and European breakdown cover and charges £13 a month for maintaining the account.

Nationwide offers worldwide travel, mobile phone and European breakdown cover and charges £13 a month for maintaining the account.

Cover for travel essentials includes luggage, documents and cash as well as protecting against travel-specific problems like delays, cancellations and medical expenses.

Then cancellation cover is up to £5,000, the medical expenses cover up to £10 million, whilst cover for travel disruption will be eligible when caused by natural disasters, or airline or travel end supplier failure.

The policy doesn't cover medical conditions unless they have been declared to Nationwide and accepted. In some instances, you can pay for a medical upgrade to your insurance policy.

Two other clauses to be aware of is that the longest trip length allowed is 31 consecutive days.

For any person to be insured who is aged 70 or over, they must buy an age upgrade to cover them.

Although the monthly cost will add up to £156 a year, it's possible to offset much of this during the the first year, thanks to Nationwide's current account switching incentive.

Non-Nationwide members can currently get £100 for switching, whilst members who switch to the Flex Plus account could get £125.

Saves the extra admin: Nationwide's annual travel insurance policy is worldwide, and covers a whole family for multiple trips, not just the individual account holder.

On top of travel insurance, account holders get vehicle breakdown cover both in the UK and the rest of Europe and mobile phone insurance for the whole family.

The car insurance is valid whether someone is a driver or a passenger in a vehicle, and comes with no excess to pay and unlimited callouts.

The mobile insurance covers mobiles belonging to the account holder and those belonging to their partner and dependent children. It covers for loss, theft, damage and faults.

2.  Virgin Money's Club M Account

Virgin's Club M Account comes with a £14.50 monthly charge.

Similar to Nationwide, it offers 31 days' worldwide cover per trip. It will cover the account holder and a partner living with them if there're both under 75, so it's a little more generous on that front.

Virgin's worldwide family multi-trip travel insurance - includes winter sports, golf and weddings. Plus, 24 hour access to a doctor at home or abroad.

There's also cover for up to four dependents under 18 - either in full time education or living with the account holder.

Emergency medical treatment, includes falling ill with coronavirus while away, and cover for the journey home, if it's medically necessary.

It also covers lost, damaged or stolen items, and if the baggage is delayed, any essentials will be paid for in the interim period. It also includes cover for delays or missed departures and winter sports as standard.

Account holders are also covered when cancelling or cutting short a trip if they fall ill with coronavirus as long as they didn't know they had it and weren't being tested for it when they booked their trip.

The cover includes emergency medical, surgical, hospital, treatment and ambulance costs, as well as any additional accommodation and travel expenses if someone cannot return to the United Kingdom.

There is a maximum allowance of 31 days of worldwide cover per trip.

It covers the account holder and their partner living with them if they're both under 75. There's also cover for up to four dependents under 18.

A claim will be void if it relates to any medical treatment received because of a medical condition or an illness related to a medical condition which a person knew about at the time of opening the account.

What else?

On top of the travel insurance it also offers UK breakdown cover with no call out charges, whether as the driver or the passenger and offers help at the roadside and at home.

It also offers worldwide mobile phone and gadget insurance covering against loss theft, damage, and breakdown

Just make sure you've declared any pre-existing medical conditions and don't leave your valuables unattended to be fully covered.

Virgin current account holders also benefit from various other perks.

It offers access to an easy-access linked savings account paying 1.71 per cent on balances up to £25,000. C ustomers can also benefit from 2.02 per cent on balances up to £1,000 in their bank account.

New customers switching to the Virgin Money Club M Account can also receive a bonus of 20,000 Virgin Points to spend with Virgin Red, thanks to Virgin Money's latest current account switching offer.

Virgin Red is a rewards club that turns everyday spending into points. Once you are a member, you can earn and spend Virgin Points across almost 200 different rewards.

The 20,000 Virgin Points boost means travellers could get a return flight to Barbados, the Bahamas or St Lucia, while bakery enthusiasts could turn their points into 100 sausage or vegan sausage rolls, 61 coffees or teas or 100 doughnuts or muffins.

3.  Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account

Halifax Ultimate Reward current account costs £17 per month, the equivalent of £204 per year. However, there are ways to dramatically reduce this via its cashback and switching offers.

The account includes a family travel insurance policy for the account holder, their spouse or partner and children aged 18 or under, or up to 24 if they're in full time education.

It includes cover for personal belongings, certain sports and activities such as winter sports golf trips.

At £17 a month Halifax is the most expensive of our three top picks. However, its £150 cash incentive and £5 monthly cashback could help account holders to significantly reduce the cost.

Its cover includes, up to £10million for hospital fees, repatriation, medical confinement, funeral and dental costs incurred if taken ill or injured on your trip.

Up to £5,000 in total for loss of pre-paid travel and accommodation expenses in the case of cancellation or curtailment.

It covers personal baggage up to £2,500 if it is lost, damaged or stolen. This includes up to £500 for valuables, and up to £500 for a single item or pair or set of items.

It also covers personal money up to £750 for loss, or theft. This includes up to £300 cover for cash. This is limited to £50 for under 16s.

Watch out:

Existing medical conditions are not covered, unless these are agreed with the insurer first, and an additional premium may be payable.

The longest trip length is 31 consecutive days. For winter sports, a maximum of 31 days cover in a calendar year.

Halifax's travel insurance covers personal Baggage up to £2,500 if it is lost, damaged or stolen.

Halifax's travel insurance covers personal Baggage up to £2,500 if it is lost, damaged or stolen.

It's also worth noting that a £75 excess per adult per incident may apply and to be covered trips must start and end in the UK.

All cover ends when the account holder turns 71. As long as the account holder is less than 71, their spouse or partner will also be covered until they reach 71.

Eligible children can also be covered so long as they are travelling with the spouse, partner or civil partner of the policyholder.

What else:

It also offers car breakdown cover with the AA. This covers any vehicle the account holder is travelling in, at the roadside or at home. But only in the UK.

For mobile insurance, it covers breakdown, accidental damage, loss and theft up to £2,000.

However, it only Covers one phone per account holder or two in the case of a joint account. An excess of £100 is payable on all successful claims.

The £17 fee makes it a little more expensive than a few others but there are ways to reduce the cost.

Halifax is currently offering a £150 switching incentive for those who switch from another current account.

On top of the £150 bribe there are other perks to take advantage of. There is a choice of £5 a month paid into the account, two film rentals or three magazine rentals, or a free cinema ticket each month.

In order to benefit from this account holders must choose to either Spend £500 on their debit card each month or Keep at least £5,000 in the account at all times.

They must also pay in £1,500 or more into your account each month and stay in credit - keeping your balance at £0 or above.

NatWest Reward bank account review: Worth switching to?

By Author Pete Chatfield

Posted on Last updated: 17/03/2024

The NatWest Reward bank account is a current account that pays you monthly and gives you extra benefits for being a member. But how does it work and is it worth it?

NatWest Reward review

NatWest Reward summary

Not a bad account if you’re keen to stay with NatWest. You’ll get money for direct debits and earn cashback at partner retailers. But there are better reward accounts out there with more generous incentives.

– Pete Chatfield

Pros and cons:

✅ Only costs £2 per month ✅ Exchange earnings for higher rewards ❌ Limited amount you can earn each month ❌ Account extras are underwhelming ❌ Partner retailers are generally poor NatWest Reward account

The last ten years have seen the way we conduct our banking change, with a move away from the high street and more of a focus on digital banking. But with an increase in the number of challenger banks such as Monzo and Starling, the more traditional financial institutions have upped their game by offering a new type of current account to attract extra customers or encourage current ones to stay.

Most of these accounts do come with a fee though, so the question is, do the benefits outweigh the costs? Let’s take a look at the NatWest Reward account in greater detail.

Natwest Reward bank account

The account was first introduced in 2015 as NatWest lost ground on its rivals thanks to accounts such as the Santander 123 .

Unlike the 123 account, NatWest didn’t pay interest on credit balances. But, it paid 3% on all your direct debits, which was more generous than Santander’s tiered system.

But the last 2 or 3 years have seen banks reduce the generosity of these accounts and NatWest didn’t escape these cuts.

The Santander Edge account rewards you with cashback every month.

NatWest Reward account benefits

  • £4 in Rewards for paying out at least 2 Direct Debits
  • £1 for logging in to the mobile app
  • you can exchange your rewards for cash or with one of NatWest trade up partners for increased value
  • spend at selected NatWest retail partners to receive 1% cashback

How much does the Reward account cost?

The fee is £2 per month. Not only that, but to receive your rewards, you will also need to have 2 Direct Debits (they must be £2 or more) leave your account, and you must pay in at least £1,250 each month. The money you pay in doesn’t have to be your wages and can come from another of your bank accounts. And you can transfer the money out as soon as you like.

Who are NatWest’s partner retailers?

You will be sent personalised offers through My Rewards that will offer cashback when you shop at certain retailers using your NatWest card. The rate varies between 1% – 15%, and the partners and offers do change. Some examples include:

However, as a member, the only offer I have received is from Europcar. And as I don’t need to rent a car, it hasn’t been useful.

How does trade up work?

Instead of using your rewards for cash, you can trade up your rewards for certain shops that will give you better value. You apply through your account, and trade-ups are available as an e-code or e-voucher, which will be displayed on-screen and a copy will also be sent to your e-mail address shortly afterwards.

You can trade rewards for vouchers from

  • Marks & Spencer
  • Red Letter Days

You will usually get between 4% and 10% bonus if you decide to trade for a voucher.

The Club Lloyds account gives you a free reward each year and you can avoid the monthly fee by paying in £1,500.

Upgrade to NatWest Reward Platinum

If you’re a fan of the Reward account, there is the option to upgrade to Platinum. This comes with the standard benefits, plus:

  • Worldwide travel insurance
  • Mobile phone insurance
  • UK car breakdown cover

This account does carry a fee of £20 per month.

Other benefits to banking with NatWest

Of course, other benefits come from banking with NatWest. These include

  • Loyalty card hub – add all your loyalty cards to the Nectar app – you’ll never leave home without them again. Unless you forget your phone.
  • Spending – get a breakdown of your spending and sort it by categories. Or, you can set yourself budgets and NatWest can keep you up-to-date with how you’re doing.
  • Cash without a card – if you haven’t taken your card out with you, you can apply for a secure cash code on the NatWest app to withdraw money at any Tesco or NatWest cash machine.
  • Link your other accounts – through Open Banking, you can link your other accounts to NatWest so you have a good overview of your finances.
  • Digital Regular Saver – a savings account which allows you to pay in up to £150 per month for an increased interest rate.
  • Free access to Rooster Money – a great alternative to GoHenry and ideal for people with children. Find out more about Rooster Money .

NatWest insights into spending

Is the NatWest Reward account worth it?

I’ll be blunt and say that the value you get from the account has significantly declined over the last couple of years. Ok, so you can earn £3 per month just for having your Direct Debits and logging in to the app after you pay out for the fee. But apart from that, the benefits are a little lacking.

And I still haven’t received a decent offer from NatWest retailer partners after several years, so no chance of any cashback.

When it comes to the Reward Platinum account, there’s no denying that £20 per month is quite expensive. But it could be suitable if you’re already paying for the insurances. It’s a case of adding up how much you pay now and switching if it’s over £20.

NatWest Reward account

Is there a switching incentive?

Usually, NatWest offers a bonus of as much as £200 if you switch your account over to them. You will need to use the Current Account Switch Service, have active direct debits and you cannot have received a bonus before a certain period – you will need to check the current terms and conditions.

Take a look at my post on the switch offers currently being offered.

Any alternatives to NatWest?

It’s worth checking out the Barclays Blue Rewards account and Santander Edge as both these accounts offer extra benefits to customers.

When are Natwest rewards paid?

Rewards can take up to 35 days from when you made the transaction to appear in your account.

Does the Reward account come with travel insurance?

No. If you are looking for more benefits, the Natwest Reward Platinum account offers extra but for £20 per month.

What is a Natwest Reward credit card?

This is a separate product from the Reward current account. This card earns you cashback at selected retailers, including 1% at supermarkets.

Do you earn Natwest rewards for paying bills?

Not any longer. The scheme was scrapped and you can now earn a set amount each month.

Where do I see My Rewards offers?

You set up your My Rewards account through natwest.com/myrewards You will need your card number and email address, and you will need to create a password.

Overdraft details

An arranged overdraft can be useful for short term borrowing. Understand arranged and unarranged overdrafts and their impact on your account. An overdraft is a form of borrowing and is repayable on demand.

How do overdrafts work?

There are two different types of overdraft:

  • An arranged overdraft, which allows you to go overdrawn up to an agreed limit. This is the type of overdraft you could apply for here. During your application for an arranged overdraft, we'll run a full credit check to determine how much we can offer you.
  • An unarranged overdraft. This is when you spend more money than you have in your current account  without  already having an arranged overdraft, or when you exceed your current arranged overdraft limit.

We charge interest on both types of overdraft. Going in to an unarranged overdraft limit can lead to payments being rejected.

Natwest travel insurance: protecting you and your travels.

NatWest Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is necessary when you are planning a trip abroad. It provides you protection against unforeseen scenarios and losses you might suffer on a trip and give you the financial means to deal with it. If you are looking for reliable, comprehensive and affordable travel insurance, then NatWest Travel Insurance is a popular option. In this blog, we’ll cover what NatWest Travel Insurance, what coverages and policies it provides, and most importantly, if it’s the right travel insurance provider for you.

What is NatWest travel insurance?

NatWest Travel Insurance is a product offered by NatWest, a popular UK-based bank that offers a variety of financial services to customers. Like most leading travel insurance, NatWest travel insurance is designed to protect policyholders against unexpected events that might occur during a trip or a holiday.

Travel insurance by NatWest can be bought as a part of their packaged bank account. The company offers a range of covers, including single-trip, annual multi-trip, backpacker, and winter sports. Read on to find out about these covers in detail and how you can get NatWest travel insurance as a part of their packaged bank account.

Covers offered by NatWest travel insurance

NatWest offers a range of travel insurance covers to suit the diverse travel needs and budgets of its customers. Here are the main types of coverages that you can avail from NatWest:

NatWest Single-Trip Travel Insurance

NatWest’s Single-Trip Travel Insurance is for those who travel less and far in between. The policy covers a single trip, usually up to 90 days in duration. The policy covers medical expenses, cancellation, personal liability, baggage loss, and travel delays.

NatWest Annual Multi-Trip Insurance

NatWest’s Annual Multi-Trip Insurance is for those who frequently travel throughout the year. This is a cost-effective way of securing your travels, where you buy a collective plan instead of paying for each trip separately. This policy covers an unlimited number of trips during the year. Your trip duration can be up to 31-45 days at the maximum, depending on the policy you choose.

NatWest Backpacker Travel Insurance

If you are taking a gap year or want to travel for an extended period of time, then this cover will be the right choice for you. Whether you are taking a gap year or on a mission to travel around the world, NatWest will tailor the policy to your needs. The policy cover trips for up to 18 months, where you can avail protection against medical emergencies, trip cancellations and personal liability.

NatWest Winter Sports Travel Insurance

Winter sports like skiing and snowboarding are popular amongst travellers. They are not only exhilarating but also bring you one of a kind experience. If you are planning on participating in this excitement on your next trip, then NatWest’s Winter Sports Travel Insurance is meant for you. This policy offers you additional coverage for winter sports equipment, ski passes and piste closure.

NatWest Bank Accounts for travel insurance

NatWest offers three types of bank accounts: Silver, Platinum and black. Each of these accounts comes with travel insurance coverage as well as additional benefits such as mobile insurance, car breakdown coverage and airport lounge access. Find the details of the travel insurance cover under each account below.

1. NatWest Silver Travel Insurance

The NatWest Silver account comes with Silver travel insurance which provides cover for the usual, including cancellation or cutting off your trip earlier than planned and medical emergencies and treatment. For medical expenses, you can get up to £10 million in cover, and for cancellations and curtailment, you can get up to £5,000. You can also avail of additional benefits for an added cost like baggage loss or travel delay.

As we mentioned earlier, you can also get a mobile phone cover of up to £1,500 for repair or replacement. Another cover that the NatWest Silver account provides is the car breakdown cover that includes roadside assistance and recovery in the UK & Europe.

2. NatWest Platinum Travel Insurance

The NatWest Platinum account comes with Platinum travel insurance but with higher levels of coverage for medical expenses, cancellations and curtailments. The policy includes up to £10 million for medical expenses and £10,000 for cancellations. The policy also includes a cover of up to £2 million for personal liability and £50,000 for personal accidents.

Coming to mobile insurance, which covers loss, theft or accidental damage, you can avail of up to £2,000. Like the Silver account, you will receive car breakdown cover and additional lifestyle benefits like discounts on travel and entertainment.

3. NatWest Black Travel Insurance

The NatWest Black account comes with Black travel insurance with the highest levels of coverage for medical expenses, cancellations and curtailments. The policy includes up to £15 million for medical expenses and £20,000 for cancellations. As for the cover for personal liability and personal accidents, you will get up to £2 million and £100,000, respectively.

The mobile phone cover is also more in NatWest Black travel insurance, summing up to £2,500. As a standard, this policy, too, includes car breakdown cover along with other benefits like airport lounge access and discounts on travel and entertainment.

NatWest is a premium travel insurance provider that offers comprehensive policies and covers, leaving no stone unturned. The level of coverage and benefit you receive will depend on which cover you have invested in. Before you sign up for any of their covers, make sure to read the fine print carefully so that you are not blindsided. For more information on travel insurance, visit Tripcoloumn.

Do I need to register for travel insurance?

NatWest account owners don’t have to register for travel insurance as they are already covered. If you want to extend your cover to include pre-existing medical conditions, then connect with NatWest’s support team, as that might require some additional costings.

Do I need to inform NatWest about my travel plans?

No, you don’t have to inform NatWest about your travelling plans. If you have one of their bank accounts – Silver, Platinum, or Black, then you are already covered by your travel insurance.

How can I make a claim?

To make a claim for your NatWest travel insurance, you can log in to Membership Services and complete the online form. This is where you can manage all your account details. You can also call the NatWest support team for further assistance.

UK's Top Packaged Bank Accounts for Value, Ranked for 2024

Hristina Nikolovska

Packaged bank accounts are current accounts bundled with additional services like insurance and breakdown cover provided at a price lower than subscribing to each service individually.

As most traditional banks, online banks and fintech providers offer packaged bank accounts, with different perks and benefits, there is an overwhelmingly large number of options to choose from.

Best Packaged Bank Accounts – Our Top Picks

The best packaged bank accounts reviewed.

To kick things off, let’s have a closer look at each of these options and see what makes them good enough to be a part of our recommendations list.

Best overall – Virgin Money Club M Account

Best range of features – Revolut Premium & Metal

Best for saving – Monzo Premium Account

Best for using abroad – Nationwide FlexPlus

Best for overdraft – Co-operative Everyday Extra

Best cashback and rewards program – NatWest Reward Platinum

is travel insurance included with natwest platinum

Virgin Money Club M is our best overall pick, simply because it ticks all of our boxes for a good packaged bank account.

At £12.50, Club M is affordable and provides great insurance coverage, perfect for using it while you are abroad. It doesn’t have too many fees and has acceptable overdraft interest rates. In addition to this, the platform pays excellent interest rates on your savings.

The number of negative customer reviews on Virgin Money online can potentially be concerning, though the number of reviewers is too small to indicate a serious problem.

  • Excellent insurance coverage
  • 2.02% AER saving interest rates
  • No fees when spending or withdrawing abroad
  • Arranged overdraft available
  • Interest paid for the first £1,000 only
  • Breakdown insurance only covers the UK
  • Concerning online reviews by customers
  • Low withdrawal limit

Far from your typical packaged bank account, Revolut is the wildcard in our selection. We included two different account tiers, Premium and Metal, both of which are cheaper than the remaining five on our list.

Besides providing budget flexibility, there are some unique features included in these plans, like the Revolut <18 kids’ bank account access, as well as crypto and precious metals trading capabilities.

Of course, the Revolut packaged accounts offer insurance and saving with interest rates features, but they are subpar compared to some of the competitors in our list. Opt for Revolut if you are looking for something different.

  • Free instant transfers to other Revolut users, globally
  • Access to multiple Revolut <18 accounts, for young people aged 6-17
  • No fees for currency exchange
  • Access to crypto and precious metal trading
  • Overdraft not available
  • No interest paid on balances
  • International card transfer and currency exchange fees
  • Cashback only available on Metal

Monzo’s take on packaged bank accounts is simply called Premium and comes at a monthly subscription price of £15.

Besides the standard insurance coverage included in most packaged plans, it offers a few unique features, like budgeting tools and free credit score updates, cash deposits, and rounding up to £1 when making payments and putting the change in a savings pot.

Monzo Premium will grow your savings up to £2,000 at a 1.5% AER which is undoubtedly better than what the competitors we reviewed are offering.

However, paying £4.75 extra for breakdown insurance might be frustrating to some.

  • Round up savings
  • Advanced budgeting features and monthly credit score updates
  • Five Free cash deposits per month
  • 1.5% AER interest rates on savings up to £2,000
  • Users have to commit to a six-month subscription
  • Narrow age restrictions of travel insurance
  • Requires paying an extra £4.75 for breakdown coverage
  • Foreign currency fees are low, but there are free alternatives

For a competitive price of only £13 per month, Nationwide’s FlexPlus packaged account does many things right. Its insurance coverage is on par with the more expensive alternatives, it’s ideal for use abroad, and there aren’t many potential fees associated with it.

Where it falls short is the travel insurance age restrictions that limit the eligibility of users up to 70 years old. Additionally, the lack of savings features and rewards programs is slightly disappointing as well. Nationwide has a cashback promo at the time of writing, but it’s time-limited, while most competitors have a permanent way of giving back to the account holder.

For more flexibility while travelling, consider multicurrency accounts to time your conversions and make the exchange rates work for you . We also list the best US dollar and euro accounts for UK residents .

  • Great insurance coverage
  • No foreign currency fees
  • No fees for foreign purchases or withdrawals
  • Significant overdraft interest rate
  • Cashback is time-limited

A couple of things stand out when looking at the Co-operative Everyday Extra packaged bank account. It’s the only option on our list to have an overdraft interest rate lower than 39%, and users with joint bank accounts get insurance benefits for the price of one.

Additionally, its age eligibility requirements are quite lenient and, unlike most competitors, accept users up to 79 years of age. Unfortunately, the fees associated with foreign currency usage make it far from ideal for spending abroad, so it’s not the best option for travelling, even though it has one of the best insurance programs.

  • Overdraft fee capped at £60
  • Joint accounts get the benefits for two people for one monthly fee
  • Highest age limit on travel insurance
  • Too many foreign currency fees, not ideal for using abroad
  • Low ATM withdrawal limits
  • Earning cashback has requirements but is limited up to £2.20 per month

NatWest

At £20 per month, NatWest’s Reward Platinum packaged bank account is the most expensive option on our list. Its users can choose to spend their monthly £5 to reduce their subscription fee to £15 or use it to get valuable discounts related to travel.

However, the rewards program is a separate benefit, and users are still able to get cashback on purchases at selected retailers.

Furthermore, NatWest Reward Platinum gives you access to the standard travel and mobile phone insurance included with most packaged bank accounts and provides you with fee-free spending abroad.

That being said, much more should be included for the hefty price of £20 per month, or at least a good interest rate on savings.

  • Up to £5 per month back in rewards
  • Discounts with selected retailers
  • No fees for spending abroad
  • Costlier than its competition
  • No interest paid on user’s balance
  • Too many additional charges for a £20/month service
  • Concerning customer reviews

How We Rate and Review The Best Packaged Bank Accounts

An abundance of packaged bank accounts is available out there, and picking the right option can be tricky, particularly because most of them offer similar benefits.

Obviously, no offer can be the clear winner, as preferences differ from one user to the next.

However, these are the primary six criteria we base our ratings on:

Regulation – We only consider packaged bank accounts offered by providers that are properly regulated by the appropriate authoritative bodies to ensure safety and fairness.

Insurance Programs – Insurance is a critical feature for packaged bank accounts and the policies included in the plans we reviewed have a large impact on their overall rating.

Spending Abroad – With travel insurance being one of the key features, it only makes sense that the affordability and convenience of spending abroad should be a factor.

Extra Features – Packaged accounts are premium bank accounts, so premium perks like saving incentives, interest rates, cashback, rewards programs, etc., are warranted.

Potential Fees – We dig deep and look for any potential charges users may incur with the plans, even fees that are not that likely to come up with normal use.

Subscription Fees – Most packaged plans are offered at a similar price range, but we want to make sure our recommendations give the best value for money.

In simple terms, we highlight the features we believe are the best in each packaged bank account and suggest what type of user they may be most appropriate for.

How Do Packaged Bank Accounts Work?

Packaged bank accounts are bundles offered by banks and fintech providers that comprise of current bank accounts and additional services not related to banking. Typically, packaged bank account plans include the following:

Travel insurance policies

Mobile phone insurance

Breakdown coverage

Access to airport lounges

Concierge services

The idea is to provide the user with multiple services at a smaller price than what they would pay if they subscribe to each service individually.

Furthermore, since the providers require account holders to pay a monthly fee to gain access to a packaged bank account, they usually throw a few premium benefits and perks in their deals to make them more attractive. Such benefits most commonly include:

Lower currency exchange rates

Minimal fees when spending abroad

Better interest rates on savings

Cashback programs

Rewards programs

Discounts at selected retailers

Access to other premium banking tools and features

The typical subscription fee for a packaged bank account is around £15. Depending on the perks and benefits included, it can be notably lower or higher.

For some consumers, packaged bank accounts may seem like an unnecessary expense, but for others, they are a bargain. Consumers who travel frequently and spend a long time away from home can definitely benefit from getting a packaged bank account.

Moreover, customers that want to ensure their cars or mobile phones can potentially get a better deal by upgrading their bank account to a bundle than buying insurance policies. Additionally, it’s far more convenient to manage one account for multiple services than juggle multiple accounts.

Finally, with the packaged bank account deal, these consumers would likely gain access to the premium banking perks we previously mentioned, which insurance companies simply cannot offer.

Features of Packaged Bank Accounts

Now that we know more about how packaged bank accounts work, we can dive deeper into their main features.

As one of the essential features of packaged bank accounts, the insurance options offered by providers vary from one bundle to the next which are listed below:

Travel Insurance – Typically covers medical expenses while travelling, the cost of lost, stolen, or damaged baggage, the cost of missed or delayed departure, as well as the cost of trip cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances.

Mobile Phone Insurance – Most commonly, mobile phone insurance applies globally and covers the costs of losing or having your phone stolen, as well as accidental damage or breakdown due to a mechanical or electrical fault.

Breakdown Cover – This usually involves roadside assistance, like changing flat tyres and jumpstarting your car on the road, vehicle recovery and towing service, as well as coverage for onward travel in case your vehicle can’t be immediately repaired.

In some packaged bank accounts, other insurance options like home emergency cover and even pet insurance may be included, but they are not that common, hence why they’re not a part of the deals we reviewed.

Spending Abroad

As packaged bank accounts are primarily targeted toward people who travel frequently, most of them try to reduce the fees traditionally associated with spending abroad.

Here is what you can expect to get by switching to a packaged bank account:

Making Payments Abroad – While most packaged bank account providers reduce the fee charged for making payments abroad to a minimum, the best of them such as Nationwide, NatWest, and Virgin Money, eliminate it completely.

Making Withdrawals Abroad – Withdrawing abroad is usually limited to a daily maximum, though great packaged bank accounts allow limits high enough to cover anyone’s day-to-day needs.

Currency Exchange Rates – The currency exchange rates with a packaged bank account are generally better than using a traditional current account. In addition, some providers like Revolut may not even charge you an additional fee for exchanging currencies, which is typically charged by other service providers.

For more options, we also list the best bank accounts for travelling .

Premium Perks

Packaged bank accounts offer all kinds of premium perks that allow consumers to get some of their spending back through cashback or other rewards programs and give them access to affordable deals.

Cashback Programs – In most cashback programs , consumers don’t get a percentage back of their entire spending, but rather, only for their eligible purchases at selected partner retailers. The cashback percentage is not fixed and varies from purchase to purchase. Finally, there is a maximum limit on how much they can get back per month.

Rewards Program – Similar to cashback, the reward programs also usually require spending at selected partner retailers to accumulate points, which can later be used to redeem rewards. In some cases, there are additional eligibility requirements that need to be met to qualify for the rewards program.

Discounts – You’ve guessed it, the discounts are typically available at selected partner retailers. These lower the price of a selected purchase at a specified percentage.

Other premium perks worth mentioning include airport lounge access, concierge services, discounted fine dining experiences, golf club membership, health and wellness services, etc.

Overdrawing With a Packaged Bank Account

Overdrawing is possible with most packaged bank accounts, and their typical overdraft interest rate is around 39%. Some providers, like the Co-operative bank, offer arranged and unarranged overdrafts with a slightly lower AER at 35.9%, while Virgin Money has an AER that varies between 19.90% and 39.90%, depending on the overdrawn amount.

In any case, overdrawing with a packaged bank account is not recommended. This is because the interest rates as well as the overdraft fees that some providers charge, are generally less favourable than some other types of bank accounts.

It’s advisable to consider better alternatives and only use overdrafts in case of emergencies. Always monitor your balance to make sure you don’t overdraw by accident.

If you have to use an overdraft as a last resort, make sure you completely understand the charges associated with it and stay within your overdraft limit to avoid incurring additional fees.

Interest Rates When Using Packaged Bank Accounts

Saving and earning through interest is far from a top priority in packaged bank accounts, and as a result, some providers don’t even include interest rates in their deals.

Some providers, like Monzo , offer 1.5% AER on savings up to £2,000, which is better than what other packaged bank account options are offering.

However, compared to other types of bank accounts , like savings accounts, these interest rates are considerably lower. That being said, savings accounts serve an entirely different purpose and come with different limitations and eligibility requirements.

If you are looking to earn some money through interest rates, we suggest you look for alternative solutions elsewhere, as packaged bank accounts aim to achieve something else.

Common Charges Associated With Packaged Bank Accounts

Packaged bank accounts undoubtedly provide plenty of benefits, but at what cost?

Monthly Subscription Fee

Every provider charges a monthly fee just to maintain your subscription with the packaged bank account and to give you access to the perks and features that come with it.

Depending on the provider and what the deal includes, the standard subscription cost for a packaged bank account in the UK is around £15. Some providers, like Revolut, and NatWest, might offer multiple options to suit more consumers with different budgets.

When comparing the prices of different packaged bank account deals, it’s important to remember that not every option provides the same benefits. While the more expensive options naturally offer more, not every consumer needs to have everything covered in their plan.

Foreign Transaction Fees

While most packaged accounts try to keep fees associated with using a foreign currency, spending, and withdrawing abroad to a minimum, you have to be aware of the details.

Some banks have daily maximum withdrawal limits abroad and only allow you to withdraw for free up to a certain amount. After exceeding the limit, you will likely incur charges. Moreover, using ATMs that don’t belong to your bank will likely result in an additional charge.

There are also currency exchange rates that vary from one financial institution to the other and the fees associated with it. Not all, but some banks charge a minimal fee every time they convert your currency.

Overall, it’s best to read the terms of use thoroughly before you start spending abroad to avoid getting surprised by an unexpected charge.

Other, Less Common Charges

You may never run into them, but it is good to be aware of the charges which are as follows:

Fees for CHAPS and SWIFT transfers

Fees for refusing payments due to lack of funds

Fees for receiving a large amount of money in a foreign currency from abroad

Fees for the creation, shipping, and delivery of a replacement card

Even though they are not that common, it’s in your best interest to know about the less common fees and charges as well, so consider reading up on them.

How to Choose the Best Packaged Bank Account

The most important thing you need to do when selecting the right packaged bank account is to focus entirely on your personal needs.

Financial institutions try to attract as many consumers as possible, so they throw a wide net and try to appeal to everyone. If you don’t need the extra perks, don’t get swayed by them.

Getting a bundle should be an affordable alternative to buying insurance policies separately. If you were not planning on spending money at the retailers the bank offers you discounts at, don’t let that perk impact your decision.

Research thoroughly, look for the benefits that will bring value to your money, and be mindful of the fees.

Is a packaged bank account worth it?

Packaged accounts come with policies that offer high-end benefits, which may not always be necessary for everyone. It's important to assess whether a standard policy would suffice for your needs before considering a packaged account.

If a packaged account can provide a cost-saving compared to paying for coverage separately, then it may be a viable option for you. However, if it doesn't offer any significant savings, it may be better to opt for a fee-free bank account and purchase the required coverage separately.

What are the disadvantages of a packaged account?

Most importantly, packaged bank accounts can be mis-sold, and some benefits included in these accounts may not be useful or applicable to your needs. It's also possible that you may already have access to some of the benefits through your job, which means paying for them again through a packaged bank account may not be worth it.

Be sure to carefully review the terms and conditions of any packaged bank account before signing up, to avoid unnecessary fees or unwanted benefits.

Does a packaged current account charge a monthly fee?

Yes, packaged accounts typically charge a monthly fee. The fee can vary depending on the account and the benefits offered, but it usually ranges from around £5 to £25 per month. In exchange for the monthly fee, packaged accounts provide additional benefits and features like travel insurance, mobile phone insurance, breakdown cover, and other perks.

Do packaged accounts have switching offers?

Some packaged accounts do offer switching deals. We scout the market and list the bank switching deals here — make sure to sign up for email notifications to never miss an offer.

Read on to find out more!

Table of Contents

1. NatWest Travel Insurance Overview

NatWest offers travel insurance as part of its packaged bank accounts, which are only available to existing NatWest current account customers. Depending on the level of cover, their European and Worldwide travel insurance can protect you and your property against unforeseen circumstances while you’re travelling or on holiday, such as medical care, cancelled flights, or lost luggage. Customers over 70 or with pre-existing medical conditions may have to pay extra for extended cover, but it’s worth checking with NatWest, as their insurers may be able to offer help.

The Silver, Platinum, and Black bank accounts offer European, Worldwide, and Worldwide Plus travel insurance, respectively. The family cover for Platinum and Black account customers provides cover for the account holder, their partner, and dependent children under 18, while Silver account customers are only covered along with their joint account holder. NatWest’s travel insurance also covers trip cancellations, delayed or missed departure, cutting your trip short, personal accident, personal liability, and lost or delayed baggage.

It’s a good idea to have travel insurance because some tour operators may require it before confirming your booking, especially in countries like the USA where there’s no public health service. The cover provided by NatWest’s travel insurance is subject to policy terms and conditions, so customers should review, print, and/or save a copy of them. In addition, customers should check the latest advice from the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Government about travel and Coronavirus (Covid-19), as coverage related to pandemics may vary. If a customer needs to cancel their trip for one of the cancellation reasons covered by the policy, they can submit a claim. However, the policy won’t cover expenses that can be recovered from elsewhere, so customers should first consider seeking a refund from their travel provider or their card issuer under Section 75 or chargeback rules. 2. Benefits of Packaged Bank Accounts

Packaged bank accounts can be a great option for travelers looking for financial protection while they’re away. With a NatWest account, customers can access European or worldwide travel insurance, depending on their account level. This insurance can cover a range of unforeseen circumstances, such as medical emergencies, canceled flights, or lost luggage. Additionally, those with pre-existing medical conditions can have them added to their policy for extra peace of mind. It’s not a legal requirement to have travel insurance, but some tour operators may insist on it, particularly when traveling to countries without a public health service, such as the USA.

NatWest offers Silver, Platinum, and Black accounts with varying levels of travel insurance cover. Only existing current account customers are eligible for these packaged accounts. While Silver accounts come with European travel insurance, Platinum and Black customers can access worldwide insurance. Family cover is included for Platinum and Black customers, providing protection for partners and dependent children under 18, or under 23 if in full-time education. Silver account customers are only covered themselves and any joint account holder.

For those over 70 or with pre-existing medical conditions, NatWest offers extra help and support. Customers can contact the bank to find out if they can extend their travel insurance to cover someone who’s over 70 or has a pre-existing condition. However, it’s important to note that pre-existing medical conditions may not be covered by the insurance and may require an additional premium or specialist policy. NatWest’s travel insurance offers peace of mind for travelers, ensuring they’re protected against a range of potential problems that could arise while on a trip.

3. Types of Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance is an important aspect to consider when planning a trip, as it offers financial protection against unforeseen incidents while travelling. NatWest offers travel insurance through their packaged bank accounts, which are available to existing NatWest current account customers. Depending on the level of cover selected, the insurance can protect against medical care, cancelled flights, and lost luggage, among other things. The Silver account comes with European travel insurance, while the Platinum and Black accounts come with worldwide coverage. Family cover is included for Platinum and Black account holders, providing protection for the customer, their partner, and dependent children under 18. The policy also covers winter sports and other holiday-related expenses.

Although travel insurance is not a legal requirement, some tour operators may require it before confirming a booking, especially when travelling to countries where there is no public health service, such as the USA. Silver account holders and their joint account holders are the only ones covered under their respective policies. For those aged 70 or over, an annual premium of £75 per person is required to renew the policy, and pre-existing medical conditions may not be covered. However, customers can extend their insurance to cover someone over 70 or with a pre-existing medical condition by completing an online form or contacting NatWest directly.

Overall, NatWest’s travel insurance policies offer a range of cover across their packaged bank accounts, providing peace of mind for customers while travelling. The policies may be particularly beneficial for frequent travellers, as they provide coverage for a variety of incidents, including emergency medical costs, cancellations, personal accidents, personal liability, and lost or delayed baggage. While the Silver account offers European travel insurance, the Platinum and Black accounts offer worldwide coverage and family cover for the customer, their partner, and dependent children under 18.

4. Travel Insurance Requirements

Travel insurance is a crucial requirement for any traveler. Luckily, most banks and insurance companies offer travel insurance policies to make the process simpler. One such policy is the NatWest International Gold Account. For a monthly fee of £18, customers can access a range of benefits, including travel insurance with comprehensive worldwide cover, including winter sports. This policy covers you and your partner plus any dependent children under 18, and even those up to 23 if they are in full-time education. Emergency medical assistance is available 24/7, providing peace of mind during your travels. However, it’s important to note that this policy is only available to residents of Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar, or the Isle of Man, and Gibraltar residents must be existing NatWest customers.

In comparison, FlexPlus Worldwide Family Travel Insurance, offered by Nationwide, covers you and your family, including business, wedding, golf, and winter sports cover. This policy grants you access to an online portal, allowing you to manage your insurance on the go. An extension upgrade is required for trips longer than 31 days, and the policy is only for UK residents who live in the UK for at least six months of any 12-month period. The ages of the insured people also matter, and those over 70 must pay for an age upgrade to cover them. This policy covers medical conditions declared and accepted by the insurer and is only valid if your trip starts and ends in the UK. As with any insurance policy, it’s vital to read the policy documents carefully to avoid any surprises.

As with any policy, each policy has its pros and cons. For instance, the NatWest International Gold account offers preferential rates for a fee-free overdraft, VIP treatment from a concierge service, and private motor excess insurance. Their gold standard features make clients feel like a VIP. Whereas, the FlexPlus Worldwide Family Travel Insurance policy may work better for those with children and those looking for a more comprehensive policy. They even cover travel documents costs and offer coverage for wedding essentials. This policy also grants you access to an online portal, making managing your insurance more convenient.

In conclusion, both the NatWest International Gold Account and FlexPlus Worldwide Family Travel Insurance offer robust policies with their own unique benefits. Before selecting either policy, it’s essential to assess your travel requirements carefully. Factors like the length of your travels, the age of the insured party, and your destination can impact the type of coverage you need. However, both policies come with extensive coverage that will cater to most domestic and international travelers.

5. coverage for Individuals Over 70

NatWest offers travel insurance as part of their packaged bank accounts, which is available for existing customers. The European travel insurance is included in their Silver bank accounts, while their Platinum and Black bank accounts offer Worldwide travel insurance. The insurance covers unforeseen circumstances such as medical care, cancelled flights, or lost luggage. It is not a legal requirement to have travel insurance, but it is highly recommended, especially when travelling to countries without a public health service.

For those over 70 years of age or with pre-existing medical conditions, there may be extra charges or restrictions on coverage. NatWest requires notification of any individual aged 70 or over and each year the individual must contact NatWest to get a cover extension at an annual premium of £75 per person. No coverage for pre-existing medical conditions is provided. If a customer cannot get an upgrade to extend their coverage level or their premium upgrade is unexpectedly high due to medical conditions, NatWest’s insurers, UK Insurance Limited, suggest seeking help from the Financial Conduct Authority and MoneyHelper directory.

On the other hand, InsureandGo is an alternative provider for travel insurance that aims to keep things simple and offer comprehensive coverage even for those over 70 years old or with pre-existing medical conditions. Children can also be covered for free under a policy. Their policies come with standard coverage of over 50 activities and sports. InsureandGo is licensed and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and has been specialising in travel insurance for over ten years.

Travel insurance is a wise investment for any trip, and NatWest and InsureandGo offer competitive options with different coverage for various types of travel.

6. Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Coverage

Travel insurance is crucial when going abroad, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions. NatWest offers travel insurance, but for those over 70 or with pre-existing medical conditions, an additional charge may apply. It is important to check if your medical condition is covered, as some medical needs may not be included in the policy. Be sure to review the policy document thoroughly to know what the policy covers and what it doesn’t.

If you have pre-existing medical conditions and are unable to get travel insurance for your trip, you may need to reconsider your travel plans. However, there are options available to you, such as working with an insurance broker or looking at specialist travel insurance providers that cater to those with pre-existing medical conditions. Getting several quotes from multiple providers can also help you find coverage that is right for you.

When speaking with brokers and insurance providers, they may ask for detailed information about your medical condition. It is important to be truthful and as specific as possible about your condition and any treatment you may be undergoing. You should also ask about the coverage amount, excess, and any exclusions that may apply to your policy. This way, you will have a clear understanding of what is covered and what is not, providing you with peace of mind when travelling.

It is also worth knowing that having a UK European Health Insurance Card or a UK Global Health Insurance Card can provide you with free or reduced-cost healthcare should you require it while abroad. However, these cards may not cover everything, so it’s important to have travel insurance that covers any additional costs that may arise during your trip. In case of any doubts or queries, you can always reach out to your insurance provider for assistance.

7. Coronavirus (COVID-19) Coverage

Travel insurance is an essential part of any trip and offers financial protection against unforeseen incidents. With NatWest’s packaged bank accounts, customers can benefit from European or worldwide travel insurance, depending on their account. The insurance covers a range of areas, including medical care, cancelled flights, lost luggage, and personal liability. Additionally, family cover is included for Platinum and Black account holders, providing protection for the account holder, their partner, and dependent children under 18 or 23 if in full-time education.

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NatWest has updated its travel insurance policy to cover certain cancellations related to the virus. For trips booked from 5th January 2021 to 1st March 2022 and taken before 2nd March 2022, an endorsement was in place which changed the cover available for trip cancellation due to COVID-19. However, this endorsement was removed on 2nd March 2022. The cover has been extended to include the need to quarantine or self-isolate, FCDO advice against ‘all’ or ‘all but essential’ travel due to COVID-19 or another disease declared a pandemic and the inability to use pre-booked and pre-paid accommodation in an area adversely affected by COVID-19 or a pandemic. It is advisable to check the latest government and FCDO advice before booking a new trip or travelling.

In the event that a trip is cancelled for one of the approved reasons, a claim can be submitted. However, it is essential to consider other options for a refund first. If the travel provider has been unable to provide the booked service, customers should seek a refund. If the payment was made by credit card and the value of the booking is over £100, customers may be protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. They should contact their card issuer for further information. Similarly, debit or charge cardholders can contact their card issuer for advice as they may be able to make a claim under their chargeback rules. If unable to obtain a refund from any party, customers can consider making a travel insurance claim.

Customers who require an extension to their travel insurance due to being over 70 or with pre-existing medical conditions can complete the online form or call NatWest to find out if they can be covered. However, it is imperative to note that pre-existing medical conditions won’t be covered, and the upgrade insurance premium may be higher than expected. In such cases, help is still available through a directory created by UKI, NatWest’s insurers, in collaboration with the Financial Conduct Authority and MoneyHelper. Customers can search for alternative options by contacting the directory’s phone number. Overall, NatWest’s travel insurance policy provides reliable coverage for travellers with additional options for COVID-19-related cancellations and extensions for those over 70 or with pre-existing conditions.

8. Cancellation Reasons Covered

NatWest offers travel insurance as part of their packaged bank accounts, which are only available to existing customers. Depending on the level of cover chosen, the policy can provide financial protection against unexpected incidents such as medical emergencies, cancelled flights, or lost luggage. Even though travel insurance is not a legal requirement, some tour operators may insist on it before confirming a booking, particularly in countries without a public health service.

Silver, Platinum, and Black account holders have access to different levels of travel insurance cover depending on their account. The Silver account comes with European travel insurance, and the Platinum and Black accounts come with Worldwide travel insurance. Family cover is provided for Platinum and Black account holders, which includes the account holder, their partner, and dependent children. Silver account holders, on the other hand, are only covered along with their joint account holder.

People aged 70 and over must contact NatWest to get their cover and pay an annual premium per person, as pre-existing medical conditions won’t be covered. In case the insurer can’t offer an upgrade to the needed cover level or if an upgrade premium is higher than expected due to existing medical conditions, help is available through a directory created in partnership with the Financial Conduct Authority and MoneyHelper.

The policy provides coverage related to a pandemic such as Coronavirus (Covid-19) for trips taken from 2nd March 2022, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. For trips scheduled before that, an endorsement was in place until 2nd March 2022, which changed the cover available for trip cancellation as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The policy won’t cover travel to countries where the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel. If a trip must be canceled for one of the covered reasons, a claim can be submitted, but expenses recoverable from elsewhere must first be considered.

NatWest encourages clients to apply for their travel insurance policy after booking a trip as they’ll only need upgrades or extensions to their policy once they travel. If a claim is necessary, they recommend using their online claims service and keeping records of communications with the provider or another party involved. Customers who have booked through their Travel Service or bought tickets for an event and are concerned about cancellations should check the NatWest FAQs or contact them for more information.

9. Making a Claim

NatWest International offers a comprehensive Gold account that includes travel insurance, among other benefits. One of the significant benefits of the Gold account is the travel insurance that provides comprehensive worldwide coverage for the account holder and their family, including winter sports cover. They also offer emergency medical assistance, 24/7, wherever in the world an account holder may be. The partner of the account holder is also covered, whether married or cohabiting, and dependent children under 18 (or 23, if they are in full-time education). The policy is underwritten by AWP P&C SA and administered in the UK by Allianz Global Assistance. However, for more information on how coronavirus (COVID-19) affects your Gold account travel insurance, it is essential to check their website before travelling.

In addition to travel insurance, NatWest International’s Gold account also offers VIP treatment with their concierge service to help account holders with their bookings, flights, holidays, and more. This concierge service is provided by Ten, a leading lifestyle management company, and is available 24/7. Members also enjoy exclusive dining, travel, entertainment, and retail benefits negotiated with world-leading brands by their team of specialists. The concierge service also offers unlimited dining, travel, and ticket requests. Moreover, the account holders can save on flights departing from the UK with Ten’s partnered airlines, including various long-haul destination flights with British Airways .

If the account holder owns and insures their private motor vehicle, the Gold account offers peace of mind with private motor excess insurance, as well as car rental loss damage coverage. The insurance works alongside the existing car insurance and covers the cost of the excess if and when a claim is made and the damage to the vehicle is greater than the excess limit. The limit is £3000 under the policy. There is also coverage under the Car Rental Loss Damage Waiver Insurance for up to £50,000 (or equivalent in local currency) incurred as a result of damage, fire, vandalism, theft, or use of the rental vehicle. Account holders can also claim £20 per day (up to a maximum of £200) if the car rental is cancelled or cut short on the advice of a physician. Lastly, the coverage includes £200 to pay for drop-off charges incurred through the car rental station following an accident or illness and £50 for calling out a locksmith if a named beneficiary unintentionally locks their keys in the rental vehicle.

Choosing travel insurance can be a daunting task, but Which? offers a comprehensive review of the best and worst travel insurance policies. They rate cover for travel and reveal the best policies, with details on medical expenses, cancellation, and airline failures. They have assigned each travel insurance policy a policy score reflecting how comprehensive the coverage is, as well as a dedicated Covid cover rating. To compare travel insurance companies, one can check their tables and reviews of the biggest and best insurers. By clicking on the links in the reviews, one can find more information about them. Comparing policies, especially specialised ones for medical conditions or winter sports, is essential before buying. It is also crucial to read and understand the policy wording, general exclusions, and conditions before purchasing any policy. Lastly, checking the holiday provider’s protection is necessary in case anything goes wrong, and the compensation needs to be claimed from them first before the insurer accepts the claim.

10. NatWest Travel Service FAQs

NatWest offers travel insurance as part of their packaged bank accounts. These accounts are only available to existing NatWest current account customers. The Silver account comes with European travel insurance, while the Platinum and Black accounts come with Worldwide travel insurance. Depending on your level of cover, travel insurance could protect you against unforeseen circumstances while you travel such as medical care, cancelled flights, or lost luggage. It is not legally required to have travel insurance, but some tour operators may require it, especially if you’re travelling to a country like the USA . One of the great things about NatWest’s travel insurance policies is that you have the option of cover for over 70s, and pre-existing medical conditions can be added.

If you’re considering NatWest’s travel insurance policies, it’s important to understand what you’ll be covered for. Their policies cover a range of incidents, including cancelling your trip, delayed or missed departure, cutting your trip short, emergency medical costs, personal accident, personal liability, baggage (lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged), delayed baggage, and lost passports or driving licences. Family cover is included for both Platinum and Black account customers, which provides cover for you, your partner, and dependent children under 18. For Silver account customers, only you and any joint account holder are covered.

If you or your joint account holder are aged 70 or over , you’ll need to get in touch with NatWest each year to get your cover. There will be a £75 annual premium per person, and pre-existing medical conditions won’t be covered. However, you may be able to extend your travel insurance to include cover for someone over 70 or with a new or existing medical condition by completing an online form or calling NatWest. If their insurers are unable to help, they have created a directory in collaboration with the Financial Conduct Authority and MoneyHelper that you can search for help.

In comparison, InsureandGo offers cheap travel insurance policies with free coverage for your children on your policy. They cover over 50 activities and sports as standard under all of their travel insurance policies. Our opinion on Natwest travel insurance

NatWest is a bank that offers travel insurance policies that come along with their current accounts. The insurance policies are available across 3 levels based on the account types: Silver, Platinum and Black. The company's travel insurance policies are underwritten by U K Insurance Limited which is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the FCA and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

The travel insurance covers available are Annual Multi Trip with up to 31 days for Silver and Platinum accounts and up to 90 days for Black accounts. The insurance covers come as standard when you open the current accounts therefore, there are no additional premiums to pay for unless you opt for an optional additional cover.

Aside from the travel insurance cover, depending on the type of bank account, you're also covered for the following: mobile phone insurance, free debit card purchases abroad, UK and European breakdown cover, access to over 1000 airport lounges, and 24/7 concierge services.

We would only recommend you consider Natwest if you're actually looking to open a current account that comes with travel insurance cover.

American Express Membership Rewards

Hot Tip:  Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 125k (or 150k) points with the Amex Platinum. The current public offer is 80,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Amex Car Rental Insurance

The Amex Platinum card comes with complimentary standard car rental insurance that provides secondary coverage when using your card to reserve and pay for your entire rental car contract. You also have the option to purchase premium primary car rental coverage .

For either coverage to be valid, you must decline the rental car agency’s LDW (loss damage waiver) or CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage when renting the vehicle.

Here’s an overview of how both of these coverages work:

Standard Car Rental Coverage

Secondary (standard) coverage means that you must first file a claim with any other applicable insurance you might have before the card coverage applies.

You can expect to receive excess secondary coverage for these losses:

  • Damage to and theft of the vehicle
  • Personal property up to $1,000 per person/$2,000 per accident
  • Accidental injury up to $5,000 per claimant
  • Accidental death/dismemberment up to $300,000

This is just a snapshot of the standard secondary car rental coverage; several terms and conditions apply. You should access the official guide to benefits or call your benefits administrator for specific information.

Premium Car Rental Protection Coverage

One of the real car rental insurance perks of holding the Amex Platinum card is having access to Premium Car Rental Protection coverage for just 1 low fee that covers the entire rental period, not a per-day charge like the rental agency charges.

Although there are some credit cards with primary rental car insurance , the American Express Premium Car Rental Protection coverage, in some circumstances, can provide equal or better coverage and elevated peace of mind. Terms and conditions apply.

Bottom Line: Consider Amex Premium Car Rental Protection if you don’t have a credit card that provides primary car rental insurance. Additionally, if you are renting an expensive vehicle that exceeds your card’s limit of coverage or the maximum length of the rental period on your other card is limited to less than 42 days, the Amex Premium Car Rental Protection could also be a prudent choice.

Trip Delay

Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance are designed to cover unexpected, unforeseen events that may cause you to have to cancel your trip or that cause a disruption in a trip you’re already started.

To be eligible for coverage, purchase your entire round-trip common carrier ticket with your Amex Platinum card.

American Express has a broad definition of who is covered under this benefit. Eligible travelers can include the cardholder, traveling companion, family member of the eligible traveler, or family member of the traveling companion.

Examples of events that could be covered include the following:

  • Bodily Injury or Illness — If you, a traveling companion, or a family member of either, experience an accidental injury or become ill, causing you to cancel your trip, you may have coverage
  • Bad Weather — If extreme weather causes your trip to be canceled or disrupted, there could be coverage
  • Change in Military Orders —Applies to cardmember and/or spouse (spouse definition includes domestic partner)
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Jury duty or other qualifying legal obligation
  • Uninhabitable dwelling of either the cardmember or traveling companion
  • Quarantine imposed by a physician for health reasons

You can expect coverage of up to $10,000 per trip , and a maximum limit of $20,000 per card per 12-month period.

Terms and conditions apply.

Bottom Line: While the trip cancellation/trip interruption benefit covers specifically stated reasons for trip cancellation/interruption, there is no coverage for voluntary cancellations, disruptions due to known events, or for preexisting conditions. Additional terms and conditions can be found in your guide to benefits or call the benefits administrator prior to your trip.

Experiencing a trip delay is inevitable so having coverage for added expenses as a result of that delay could be a welcome economic benefit. To qualify for trip delay coverage, just pay for the full amount of your common carrier round-trip transportation ticket with your Amex Platinum card.

The delay must be for more than 6 hours for you to be eligible for reimbursement for necessary incidentals, meals, and lodging.

Coverage limits are $500 per covered trip and a maximum of up to 2 covered trips in each consecutive 12-month period. Coverage is secondary to other coverage that applies and does not include expenses that are reimbursed by the airline or other entities. Additional terms and conditions also apply.

Losing a checked bag used to be a very common occurrence. With new technology and tracking mechanisms, however, incidents have declined, but they still happen. If you do happen to experience lost bags, however, you can count on the baggage insurance found on the Amex Platinum card.

To activate the coverage , simply pay for your common-carrier fare with your card and/or Membership Rewards points.

Here’s the coverage you can expect for lost luggage:

  • Checked Bags — Up to $2,000 per covered person, per trip
  • Carry-on Bags — Up to $3,000 per covered person, per trip
  • Specialty High-value Items — Up to $1,000 per person, per covered trip ($2,000 for New York residents, maximum $10,000 per trip)
  • Combined Limit — The limit for all baggage, including high-risk items, is $3,000 per covered person, per single trip

Checked baggage is covered only while traveling on a common carrier . Carry-on baggage is additionally covered while traveling to , from , and when waiting at the carrier terminal.

Note that the coverage on the card is secondary to any other insurance or reimbursement you might receive from the airline. There is no coverage for delayed baggage , but several other credit cards do offer this coverage .

Snowboarders on chair lift

While technically not insurance coverage, having access to help when you’re traveling, 24/7, is sure to provide additional peace of mind. The Amex Platinum card offers a premium version of a dedicated helpline that serves as a welcome resource should things go wrong during your travels.

Here are the types of assistance you can expect from the service:

Emergency Medical Transport and Evacuation — Complimentary Coverages

One of the premium services offered on the card is complimentary emergency medical transport or evacuation . If you or a covered family member becomes injured or ill during your travels, you could receive emergency medical transportation or evacuation , if necessary.

You can expect to receive the following services without charge when arranged via the hotline:

  • Emergency Transport or Evacuation — Transport to the nearest medical facility or transport from an inadequate medical facility
  • Transport of Family Member — Transport may be covered for an adult member to be by the bedside of the cardmember or for the cardmember’s minor child (who had been traveling alone with the cardmember) to be transported back to the U.S.
  • Transport of Remains — Amex will pay for the transport of remains back to the U.S.
  • Post-Evacuation Assistance — If you’re evacuated and your return ticket back to the U.S. has become invalid, Amex will arrange and pay for transportation back to the U.S.

Please note that the Premium Global Assist Hotline does not cover any medical expenses or emergency transportation services arranged outside of the hotline. Several terms and conditions apply to these coverages.

Additional Medical Assistance

In addition to the complimentary coverages offered by the hotline, you’ll find these additional medical services:

  • Medical Referrals — Receive help finding an English-speaking doctor, a hospital, or other needed medical services
  • Prescription Replacement Assistance — Get help with replacing lost or forgotten medications

There is no charge for the referral service but cardmembers are responsible for actual services received from the provider.

Other Hotline Services

  • Passport/Visa Assistance — Whether you need help replacing a passport or have a need to contact the U.S. consulate, the hotline can assist
  • Emergency Translation Services — Receive over-the-phone services or written language translation assistance
  • Legal Referrals — Should you need legal services during your trip, the hotline can help you find local bail bond services that accept Amex or refer you to other legal personnel
  • Financial Assistance — The hotline can help you arrange cash wire services, help you check out of your hotel remotely, or assist with lost card situations
  • Emergency Message Relay — In the event of an emergency, the hotline can send a message to a family member, friend, or another recipient on your behalf
  • Lost Items — Should you lose an item, your baggage gets lost, or other missing possession, the hotline can help track it down
  • Trip Planning Services — Access information such as weather, currency exchange rates, passport/visa requirements, customs information, travel warnings, and more

Bottom Line: The Amex Platinum card comes with complimentary emergency transportation and evacuation services with no stated limit. Additional medical, legal, and travel service referrals are also complimentary, but other than the emergency medical transportation and evacuation, services rendered must be paid for by the cardholder.

As with any insurance claim, you’ll need to report any event as soon as possible, provide supporting documentation, and follow up after the claim has been filed.

You could be expected to submit any, or all, of the following:

  • Copies of your common carrier ticket
  • Copies of your credit card statement showing the expenses
  • Proof of the loss (i.e. a copy of physician’s quarantine order, military orders, etc.)
  • Copy of the travel supplier’s cancellation policy
  • Any other supporting documentation requested by the claims administrator

Claims must be reported within 60 days but it is best to do it as soon as possible. Once you report the claim, you’ll receive instructions for completing the next steps in the process.

Hot Tip: Be sure to take photos and videos, keep receipts, secure any applicable police report, and hold on to other documentation that might be needed to support your claim. Keep in mind that supporting information can be difficult to obtain after the fact but may be readily secured at the time of the claim.

While the insurance that comes with the Amex Platinum card won’t take the place of a comprehensive travel insurance policy , you’ll find value in several of the benefits.

Utilizing Premium Car Rental Protection, trip cancellation/interruption, trip delay, and complimentary emergency medical transport or evacuation could save you more than you could imagine in certain circumstances.

Additionally, knowing the coverages you have in advance has tremendous value. You’ll be armed with information to make educated decisions that can protect each aspect of your trip and be better prepared for how you might handle a covered incident during your travels. Nationwide Flexplus but it costs £13 per month.

"Live from...."

Halifax Ultimate Reward £17 per month but pay in a certain figure per month - sorry can't recall how much - and they give you £5 back.  Offers Allianz insurance with cruising but not the bells and whistles. Does have benefit of offloading cover.

I'm with Natwest and travel insurance policy included with Platinum Account seems to be good

For Cruise cover you have to distinguish two separate sections:

1)  Are you covered for medical and evacuation whilst on the ship

2)  Are you covered for additional things like missed ports.

We have the Nationwide plus account which covers the first one (which is the essential part). The second one is an optional extra if you want it.

Yes that's what I meant by bells and whistles.  Do beware some policies do not include item 1.

Trouble with Halifax Ultimate is you have to pay £1500 minimum into account each month and the biggie is have a balance of £5000 or more for every day of the month to get the £5 back.

You do pay in £1500 or more but there is no obligation to have £5000 in your account.   You need to spend £500 a month on your debit card which with fuel and food is sadly easily achievable! We use ours for household bills and it never has that amount in it, at most usually £2,000 at a time.

There is no requirement on the Nationwide Flexplus account to have regular amounts paid in, or to use it for D. D. payments etc.  We no longer use it as our principal current account so don't have a lot in there.  Also, if you have a joint account both account holders are covered.

Correct we get the five pounds a month than they take seventeen off us to run it

Nationwide will including over 80, but at an additional premium.

If you dont spend £500 every month on your debit card which is not easily achievable for everybody you have to have £5000 in your account for each day of the month to get £5 reward cashback.

Nationwide Flexplus covers you for travel insurance up to the age of 70 and over that you have to pay a premium of £65 every year and have a medical screening on a yearly basis.

Hi, We are with Barclays Travel Insurance. They have 2 levels £12.50  and £18. We have the Travel Plus Pack at £18pm which gives us worldwide cover, RAC recovery in UK and Europe and 6 Airport Lounge Passes a year. We used to have RAC cover which cost us about £120 p.a. and if you use Airport Lounges on special offer, it would still be about £20 ea...so £216 per year for the travel insurance is very cheap. They give full coverage for cruising and repatriation. I believe this Travel insurance is to the age of 80. (we are 66 and 69).

The downside...sort of. The insurance only covers for holidays/cruises up to 31 days. The upside..they will give you full cover for any additional days for a one off payment. For example: we are on a 65 day cruise around South America and back through Caribbean. We had to pay an additional £236 for the 2 of us. We are away in France and Germany for 75 days with our car and caravan and the cost for this including upgrading the RAC cover was £136.  For us this works out very cheaply considering what P&O travel insurance quoted us for the single trip around south America!!...I must look out the quote again.

Cool Cruiser

Lloyd's cover you till the age of 80. That's with Allianz insurance cover for £21 per month.

Yes I did say that.  As I say we use ours for household expenses so don't find £500 difficult but I acknowledge everyone is different.  However the travel insurance is excellent and with Allianz will cover my husband's myriad of serious health conditions on renewal for £293 a year compared to the £1,400 we had to pay Avanti in September for insurance that doesn't have the offloading cover.

Intetested as to why you use a debit card rather than a reward credit card (B.A, Virgin, IHG, Tesco - which includes several cruise lines in their reward scheme - etc.)?

Only use Amex credit card mainly for travel.  I fly a lot so have my monthoy debit card linked to Virgin to get extra shopping points which become free flights or upgrades.  I also use the debit card to get the benefits on Halifax account mentioned above. My husband's travel insurance costs mega amounts so with phone insurance and RAC spending £500 per month in groceries and fuel is worth the price of £17 per month reduced by a fiver.

That's good - I thought it had to be a joint account for both to be included. 👍

For the nationwide account, you only need to make it a joint account for the car breakdown insurance part, so that you can both call them out whatever vehicle you are driving.

No it covers not just 2 but your dependent children as well.

Your Guide to Flight Travel Insurance Coverage

Your Guide to Flight Travel Insurance Coverage

Last Updated: September 11, 2024

Are you looking to buy flight travel insurance for your next trip? Let’s do it! We’re here to simplify the complexities of travel insurance policies so you can choose the best policy for your trip.

Understanding how  flight insurance  works and what it covers can offer relief and peace of mind. Whether dealing with unexpected cancellations, baggage loss, or medical emerge ncies, flight insurance protects against disruptions, easing travel worries.

Choosing the right travel insurance can give you the confidence and control to make informed decisions about your trip. Here’s a quick guide to help you build a comprehensive travel insurance plan with flight insurance coverage.

How do I choose the best policy for me?

Of course, your choice of a travel insurance company and policy depends on your specific needs. But before we get into a particular type of policy — flight insurance — consider the following points when selecting a plan:

  • Type of Coverage

Are you embarking on a short domestic flight or an international adventure? The type of coverage you need should align with the nature of your trip. For shorter trips, a policy with basic medical coverage may be sufficient. However , consider policies that include  trip cancellation cove rage and higher reimbursement limits for longer trips with higher trip costs.

  • Your Health

Choosing a plan that addresses your health needs can provide a profound sense of care and security during your travels. Before buying travel insurance for an international trip, ensure the policy offers adequate medical coverage. Your domestic health insurance may not apply abroad. For example, choosing a plan with a  pre-existing condition waiver  is crucial if you have pre-existing medical conditions .

  • Activities on Your Trip

If your trip includes activities like skiing, hiking, or other adventure sports, make sure the policy covers those. These plans will typically include the Sports & Activities benefit, which extends medical benefits to travelers participating in adventure activities during a covered trip. Not all high-risk activities are eligible for coverage, so refer policy’spolicy’s Certificate of Insurance for a complete list of exclusions.

  • Trip Cost and Budget

Consider the overall cost of your trip. A general rule of thumb is — the more you spend, the more coverage you need. A more robust policy to cover cancellations or interruptions might be worth the investment.

  • Destination Risks

Consider your destination. If it’s prone to natural disasters, civil unrest, or travel restrictions, choose a policy with trip cancellation coverage.

With this information, we can explore choosing the right flight insurance plan for your trip.

What Is Flight Insurance?

Understanding what flight insurance covers helps you make an informed decision and its necessity for your trip. It can protect you costs related to flight issues, such as trip cancellations, missed connections, baggage loss, and medical emergencies. Ultimately, it protects against potential financial strain or trip disruptions.

What Does Flight Travel Insurance Cover?

Flight insurance generally protects against unforeseen travel disruptions, but the coverage can vary by policy. Typically, flight insurance covers:

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption : Flight insurance can reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable costs if you cancel or cut your trip short for a covered reason, like illness or severe weather.
  • Medical Emergencies: Most flight insurance policies will cover related medical expenses. If you experience an unforeseen medical emergency during your trip. Most plans will also cover emergency medical evacuations if necessary.
  • Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Baggage . Flight travel protection can reimburse you for personal items if your luggage is lost, damaged, or delayed.
  • Flight Delays or Missed Connections: Travel delays or cancellations can ruin travel plans. Flight insurance can help cover food and accommodation expenses during significant delays and rebooking fees if you need to make new travel arrangWhat’s.

What’s Not Covered?

While flight insurance offers broad protection, there are exclusions to be aware of. Typically, flight inwon’tce won’t cover:

  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions: Many pdon’tes don’t cover cancellations or medical issues related to pre-existing health conditions unless you purchase a waiver.
  • Change of Mind: You are usually not covered if you cancel your trip last minute simply becadon’tou don’t want to go. However, options exist, and some plans allow you to purchase a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade to add to your policy.
  • Travel for Medical Treatment: Flight insurance may not cover costs related to traveling for a specific medical procedure.
  • Certain High-Risk Activities: Your flight insurance may exclude coverage for injuries or related events if you engage in high-risk activities like skydiving or extreme sports.

How Does it Work?

Flight insurance protects you financially when certain events disrupt your travel plans. After purchasing a you’ll, you’ll be covered for specific events.

Flight insurance protects you financially when travel plans are disrupted. Once purchased, it covers specific events like flight cancellations or medical emergencies. You can  file a claim for eligible expenses, such as airfare or hotels.

It’s a smart choice for travelers seeking peace of mind in case of unexpected situations during their trip.

Bottom Line: Is Flight Insurance Worth It?

Flight insurance is worth it if you’re worried about travel disruptions, flying for an important event, or having a costly ticket during del ay-prone seasons. Covering cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost baggage, as well as the protection and peace of mind from financial loss, makes your trip even sweeter.
