James Bay (born in 1990) is a British indie-pop, soul and alternative rock singer-songwriter and guitarist, hailing from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, UK.

Growing up in the small town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, young James Bay attended Hitchin Boys’ School before studying at the respected Brighton Institute of Modern Music. After graduating, Bay released his debut EP “The Dark of the Morning” in July 2013, which drew comparisons to other British acts including Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard and Foy Vance, for his moving folk-pop delivery.

Following support slots for Tom Odell, John Newman and Kodaline, which greatly increased the singer-songwriter’s exposure, Bay released his sophomore EP “Let It Go” in 2014. The EP debuted inside the Top 10 on the iTunes album chart, led by the single of the same name which reached No. 62 in the UK Singles Chart. Also in 2014 Bay made a live performance on the Burberry runway and subsequently recorded a Burberry Acoustic session.

The guitarist’s exposure grew again when he supported Hozier on his worldwide tour, making a notably performance during a show in Boston, U.S. on Halloween. In November 2014 Bay released his third extended play “Hold Back the River”, as well as a single of the same name, which reached No. 16 in the UK Singles Chart as well as charting well in a host of other European countries. Ahead of his debut album “Chaos and the Calm” (2015) Bay released the charting singles “Scars” and “If I Ever Want to Be in Love”, later winning the Critics’ Choice Award at the 2015 BRIT Awards.

Live reviews

I remember I texted my friends that James Bay was coming to the Netherlands and that I really wanted to go. My best friend responded quickly and we ordered some tickets! After that we needed to wait for half a year before the concert was.

We were at the Heineken Music Hall, the place he would give his concert, and there was already a huge queue. So we just entered the queue and waited. After half an hour, the doors opened en we went inside. We stepped inside the concert room and we just ran to a place near the stage. Everyone was still sitting, because it we needed to wait for more than an hour.

Around eight o’clock, the supporting act came. It was a really nice guy. His name was Samm Henshaw and his music was on point. I loved it and so did the whole crowd. He let us sing with him and that kind of stuff. It was an awesome guy and his voice, he had such a great accent. An accent I fell in love with.

After the supporting act and waiting half an hour or so, James finally came. My best friend and I were screaming and shouting and he played his first number, Collide. It was my favourite song and reminded me of chilling with friends.

He interacted nice with the audience and was really thankful for our yelling, clapping and screaming. His singing is excellent live, really really good. I just love listening to him, he has such a nice, deep voice.

When he was singing ‘Let It Go’, the whole audience was silent. Nobody was singing with him, everybody just listened and enjoyed the moment. It was so beautiful. Another great moment was with the song ‘Move Together’, he asked everyone who was with their love or (best) friend or whatever, to give each other a hug and show some love and I stood there hugging my best friend for the whole song.

All together, it was an amazing evening which I like to experience more than once. It will always stay in my head as a lovely memory.

Thanks to James Bay to make it one of the best evenings in my life!

During all last year i had been constantly listening to James Bay, I even cried myself to sleep one or twice because of the powerful meanings that his songs have, and how easily they can change my mood and cheer me up. So i begged and begged my parents to buy me some concert tickets when i had found out that he was coming to madrid, (bands and artist that i really love ALMOST NEVER come to madrid, so i couldnt miss this opportunity) my parents ignored me and i had stopped listening to his music for awhile because i thought i wasnt ever gonna see him live.

I dont really get good grades in school so when it was christmas time I honestly didnt expect my parents to get me anything, but then my mother just jokingly throws an envelope at me. I open it and i started to cry like baby TWO TICKETS FOR JAMES BAY!!!!!

So yeah, i invited one of my very close friends Marina, and ever since the concert are friendship has been very strong. At first she had no idea at all who James Bay was, she went because i had begged her to come with me, and she ended up falling in love with his music almost as much as me.

The environment at the concert was amazing, we instantly made some new friends as we were waiting for James. Once he had finally appeared on stage i started crying and my friend was all weirded out but i honestly didnt care.. i was only two rows away! he was so close, and i was truly happy.

Every song sounded so amazing live, everyone was loving the music and singing along, i knew he was an amazing singer but WOW, and i think the best part of the concert was when the entire crowd was singing If You Ever Want To Be In Love, the smile he had was so real, he looked so proud of himself, he was so happy that we knew the words and that we loved his songs.

If he ever comes back to Madrid im gonna be the first to buy tickets, id see him again in a heartbeat. It is truly an amazing and very emotional experience.

-love, Veronica B.

James Bay is a fantastic singer who gave his all in a fabulous concert at The Corn Exchange in Cambridge. There was a mix of his new songs from the 'Electric Light' album which has a raw energy and blues/rock vibe along with his famous 'Chaos And The Calm' which sent the fans wild with excitement! James seemed really happy with the reaction of the crowd and got everyone to join in with and his band and the room was filled with an awesome vibe! The stage graphics were really cool and a camera played back the audience reaction on a stage screen with what looked like fireflies in the crowd. They turned out to be phone cameras giving some magical feel to the atmosphere! He also played his version of 'Simply The Best' which he dedicated to the audience and seemed quite humbled by the audience appreciation. A genuine guy with so much talent, a must see!!

This was our 2nd time seeing James Bay in concert. Unfortunately, the 1st concert (at Radio City in NYC) was so outstanding in every way, that this one didn't really hold a candle in comparison. On the new songs, James' voice seemed almost drowned out by the instruments/back up singers. Songs from debut album were still outstanding and I wish there had been more of them. Biggest complaint was the time: only 1 hour, 10 minutes. For the money and effort that it takes to see a live show these days, the headliner really has to go longer than that. He has more material, and frankly, his fans would be thrilled with any covers (he did a Janis Joplin cover in NYC and people went wild). So there it is. I hate to leave a bad review, but perhaps this will help make future shows a bit better for other fans.

Saw OAR, James Bay and Train this past Wednesday at the Hammerstein Ballroom. During the beginning of James Bay's set that there were not enough speakers to fully fill the space, but they figured out how to fix that audio by the end of the show. James Bay - Let it Go brought chills. He is so so great live - and even more talented of a live performer than he is a recorded artist. Extremely talented guitar player, and integrated rock with his adaption of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Proud Mary.' The night ended with Train - they were... AMAZING. Patrick Monahan has such a stage presence and was nothing but smiles the entire night. The set list was so on point, and even included an appearance from Matt Nathanson. They finished with Hey Soul Sista and Drops of Jupiter.

An acoustic power house, James Bay is an extremely talented solo musician. His songs are usually just his acoustic and his gravely voice. He looks a bit like Jack White shadow in his hat, but sounds nothing like him. James is a catalogue of influences ranging from David Gray with his pure natural voice, some could even say Ed Sheerans evil brother. But better brother. Far more rocky, edgy and natural sounding.

It's such a refreshing gust of wind in our boring radio music. James is young, gifted and has plenty of time to experiment with his beautiful talents. His live shows are getting better every time as he widens his audience and venues. He fills large rooms with just his guitar and him, an unbelievable achievement when you sit and think about it.

"When words fails, music speaks" in a nutshell last night James Bay's concert in Zurich.

I knew little of this artist, but impressed by his tone and his debut album I decided to go and see his show. In a packed XTra the light went down, people screamed and the magic happened. From the first notes he transported the audience on a journey where blues, rock and folk mashed together perfectly.

No impressive choreographic scenes, just lights to underline every songs. Heart and soul on that stage like music should be ... Always!

Thanks to James for reminding me that less ... Is definitely more.

Such a great talent and beautiful voice.

It was such a pity that the sound and acoustics in the Shepards Bush Empire was TERRIBLE. Id never been to a gig here before so I don't know if it was a venue issue or sound engineering problem. At times James could hardly be heard, especially when chatting to the crowd between songs and low parts of the singing. Even the bass of the drumming was dim. The lighting too was not great, with strong lighting often pointing onto the crowd, making it hard to watch.

I would definitely want to see James Bay again, but for certain in a different venue.

I guess since this is my fifth time seeing James Bay live, I’m officially a groupie :) He’s a phenomenal performer. Bay should never be passed off as just a pop/rock guy. He’s a great musician, his vocals fill the room, he’s got this natural swag and charm for days, and he always shows his audience how grateful he is for all the love and support. His new music is awesome, mixed in with all the great stuff from the first album... SO good. I can’t wait to see him again at the Greek in October!

Best concert ever! His energy was amazing and hearing him live made all my dreams come true. It did rain while waiting outside and they would let us in any faster and then the venue was super cold and I didn't have anywhere to put my drenched jacket in. I even asked for a bag and they denied, but I guess that's just policy. Either way I loved every second of the concert including Joseph. They were amazing! They sounded so good live. 10/10 would go again.

The singer-songwriter is due to release the follow-up to his 2018 record ‘Electric Light’ later this year, though specific details on the project are yet to emerge.

Today (March 24) Bay previewed his next full-length effort with a bittersweet new song, which was previously teased by the musician on social media on Valentine’s Day (February 14).

Announcing that ‘Give Me A Reason’ was “finally here”, Bay explained: “It’s been a long and winding adventure making all this new music, but every moment was worth it. I love this song, hope you all love it too.

Tune in here:

An official video for the single is set to premiere on YouTube at 4pm GMT today – you can watch it here . “Excited for you to see this one!” Bay wrote on Twitter .

“Tune in 5 minutes early to watch an exclusive behind the scenes on how the video came to life before it officially premieres!”

Speaking about ‘Give Me A Reason’ last month, the singer explained: “It’s a song about seeing that the sun’s going down on a relationship, but believing that it doesn’t have to be the end. It’s about believing that there’s still a chance you can make it work.”

During a conversation with NME back in the summer of 2020 , Bay described his next album as “the most positive thing I’ve ever written”, adding: “There are still a few moments that have sadness and weigh a little heavily, but it’s mostly uplifting.”

He also spoke about writing and demoing a new track alongside Brandon Flowers of The Killers .

“The insight I got from working with him was incredible and to be in his presence watching him work and write music the way he does is something I’ll never forget,” Bay told NME . “He is a consummate pro and deserves the legendary status he already has.”

James Bay will embark on a UK headline tour the April, with concerts scheduled for Oxford, Brighton, London, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Sheffield and other cities throughout May. You can see the full list of dates and find any remaining tickets here .

Bay is also due to perform a Live After Racing show at Worcester Racecourse on June 11, as well as an appearance at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival in April.

James Bay shares ‘Easy Distraction’

Buddy Iahn

  • August 30, 2024

James Bay

The song was co-written with The Killers’ Brandon Flowers

British artist James Bay shares “ Easy Distraction ” out now via Mercury Records. He co-wrote the song with Brandon Flowers of The Killers, marking their first collaboration. The song sets the stage for the release of his anxiously awaited fourth full-length album, Changes All The Time , now landing on October 4th.

“The song is about realizing too late that someone means so much to you, but you still want to show them and let them know. It’s exploring how, in the face of adversity we can still reach out, we can still connect,” Bay says of the song. “I found out from a mutual friend that Brandon was interested in writing with newer artists, so I jumped at the chance and went to work with him in Park City, Utah over in America. It was an unbelievable experience and insight into writing with one of my heroes. I hope we get to do more!”

“Easy Distraction” represents another “bucket list” moment for Bay. He cites The Killers among his biggest inspirations. Together, he and Flowers penned a powerhouse track bound to resonate with both of their respective audiences.

An upbeat guitar riff drives the song over a shuffling drum groove punctuated by his gritty delivery and swooning backup harmonies. It builds towards a hummable guitar solo drenched in reverb and emotion as he pleads, “For every mistake, I’ll give you my hand. Just promise to hold it wherever we land.”

It follows the recent fan favorite “ Up All Night ” with The Lumineers and Noah Kahan. The latter has already amassed over 22 million global streams. “Up All Night” notably stands out as his first official studio collaboration with Grammy Award-nominated superstar Kahan and Grammy Award-nominated group The Lumineers. Abounding with all the gusto of a last-call singalong, “Up All Night” surges to life as an upbeat, foot-stomping anthem tailormade for the best of times with friends and family. A percussive groove sets the tempo as Bay ignites a chant on the chorus, “Let’s talk about dreams, let’s talk about life, let’s talk about all the things that keep us up all night.” At the same time, Kahan and The Lumineers fuel the celebration with full-bodied backing vocals. Fittingly, “Up All Night” climaxes with a soaring guitar solo buoyed by a boisterous gang harmony.

Changes All The Time spotlights Bay’s elevated songcraft and dynamic vocals and his fret-burning guitar playing, highlighting his evolution from every angle. This time around, he crafted these eleven tracks under the watch of producer Gabe Simon [Noah Kahan, Koe Wetzel, Maren Morris] alongside co-writers such as Brandon Flowers of The Killers, Holly Humberstone, Dan Wilson of Semisonic, Natalie Hemby of The Highwomen, and Kevin Garrett.

“Making this album felt like my first taste of true musical freedom. With the help of my co-producer, Gabe Simon, I found the courage to make what I wanted to make in ways I never have before. That’s a very hard place to get to, I’m really excited to release this music,” says James.

Bay’s definitive breakthrough smash “Let It Go” first landed a decade ago in 2014. It cracked the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, Top 3 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs Chart, and Top 5 on the Year-End Hot Rock & Alternative Songs Chart. Thus far, it has tallied over three billion streams, claiming a spot among Spotify’s prestigious “Billions Club.” Not to mention, it achieved 6x-platinum status. Moreover, his total career streams are just shy of nine billion.

Last year, he opened up for Bruce Springsteen at London’s own BST Hyde Park and joined his friends The Lumineers on tour.

  • Review: Metallica powers through subpar sound in Seattle

Michael Rietmulder

Concert review

There is no band on the planet better at obliterating NFL stadiums than Metallica — even if it was sometimes hard to tell last night.

The Bay Area metal gods arrived in Seattle for the first of two highly anticipated shows on Friday and Sunday. Billed as “no repeat weekends,” their current “M72 World Tour” has the band playing two different set lists with a different cast of openers in each city, a winning premise that pushed Metallica to dig a little deeper into their cache of heavy metal classics on Friday.

True to stadium-crushing form, the ferocious-as-ever foursome were in Beast Mode during an opening run for the ages at Lumen Field, starting with a sinister battering ram in “Creeping Death” and the galvanizing march of “Harvester of Sorrow.” A full-fisted “Leper Messiah” — precisely the kind of heyday deep cut fans hope for — followed, making an unholy trinity that would be hard to top until a haymaker combo that would close the show.

Through no fault of the four band members onstage, who were clearly in late-tour form playing the second to last city of the tour, that impressive opening blitz lost a little thunder due to mushy sound that often proved difficult to overcome. Though it would be reined in by the second act, the bass and kick drum were initially overblown in the mix, swallowing up most everything else. Frontman James Hetfield’s biker-gang-tough vocals were echoey all night, sometimes getting lost in the unexpected stadium din.

Lumen Field isn’t a bad-sounding stadium per se, as sports arena concert venues go. But Metallica has sounded far better in far more acoustically challenged stadiums, and they had no trouble dialing in the Seahawks house during their last Seattle visit in 2017 . Metallica’s two-hour set often felt like watching a phoenix flying through a storm, a rare and mighty sight to behold, if not as majestic as you know it can be.

Despite the suboptimal sound, Metallica’s first Seattle show in seven years contained plenty of highs. After a stretch of new material from last year’s back-to-roots album “72 Seasons,” interjected with “Death Magnetic” standout “The Day That Never Comes,” Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett, drummer Lars Ulrich and bassist Rob Trujillo threw it back once more with the melodically churning instrumental “Orion,” graced by Hammett’s soaring and squealing guitar work. Hetfield dedicated the classic off “Master of Puppets” to the band’s heyday bassist Cliff Burton, who died in 1986, six months after the heavy metal masterpiece was released.

From there, another beautiful Hammett solo gracefully tumbled into the opening riff of “Nothing Else Matters” — a candidate for the semioxymoronic title of best heavy metal ballad of all time — like a gold-medal gymnast.

Heavy metal has historically been music for outsiders. Its abrasive (some might say) qualities often push it to the margins, existing largely outside of the mainstream gaze — so much that it’s a point of pride. That’s part of what makes a Metallica gig so powerful, a communion of disparate outsiders that doesn’t always get to experience their unifying heavy music on such a grand scale.

“We’re a gathering of [expletive] ups and misfits,” Hetfield said after the “Black Album” ballad. “And we belong right here.”

Despite the early sound issues, that sentiment came through loud and clear all night. It felt like every sentient being between the Cascades and the Olympics bellowed along with Hetfield’s searing vocals on the next-up “Sad But True,” a brutal groove-metal death stomp that helped Metallica transcend heavy metal hero status to become a stadium-packing household name.

Metallica’s current tour has the band playing “in the round,” meaning the stage was centered on the 50-yard line instead of one of the end zones. The configuration usually makes for better 360-degree sightlines and opens up more stadium seats, which the band had no trouble filling on Friday, despite doubling down with the two-night stand.

But depending on your seat, the eight giant video towers scattered around the floor eclipsed parts of the stage, occasionally making for a game of peek-a-boo as the guitar-wielding band members moved about the spread-out stage. The tall video silos didn’t seem to justify the amount of real estate they took up until they turned into fiery pistons for a flame-throwing “Fuel” toward the end of the night.

“Burn, Seattle, burn!” Hetfield cackled maniacally midway through the speedway racer from 1997’s “Reload,” which ignited an epic closing run of classics “Seek and Destroy” and “Master of Puppets.”

Forty-three years on, Metallica is still burning strong.

The sound was even worse for the reformed Pantera, who took the stage after an opening set from Mammoth WVH, led by Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgang.

Pantera’s retooled lineup is anchored by surviving members Phil Anselmo (vocals) and Rex Brown (bass), with metal’s go-to guitar ringer (and star in his own right) Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante filling in for the Texas heavyweights’ late fraternal nucleus Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul.

The Pantera revival run, technically the band’s first tour in more than 20 years, hasn’t come without its bumps. Last year the band was dropped from several European festivals , presumably over a 2016 incident when video surfaced of Anselmo ending a Dimebag Darrell tribute show by giving a Nazi salute and shouting “white power.” Anselmo, who sure wasn’t laughing in the video, later claimed it was an inside joke because he was drinking white wine that night. Though it was hardly the first time Anselmo — one of the most talented metal vocalists of all time — has been accused of espousing racist views.

Metallica’s two-nighter in Seattle continues Sunday with openers Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills.
