Seether bassist Dale Stewart on new album 'The Surface Seems So Far,' fatherhood and more ahead of Pittsburgh show

Mike Palm

Dale Stewart, the bassist for post-grunge veterans Seether, thinks there should be a calculation for “road years,” similar to the math surrounding dog years.

“It’s like, how old are you in road years? In road years, I’m 73,” he said with a laugh. “Going by the equation.”

In real life, Stewart is only 44, but hundreds and hundreds of shows would put him much older in “road years.” According to setlist.fm , Seether played 190 shows in 2008 alone, with the band’s total already surpassing 1,800.

“Man, those were crazy times. And those were just the nighttime shows. Oftentimes we’d go to radio stations and do an acoustic performance during the day,” Stewart said in a call from his home in Georgia. “So you go there, do four or five songs acoustic and do a meet-and-greet and then you do the show that night. So it’s almost like two shows a lot of those days.

“Those were really fun times looking back, but at the same time, it was really draining. That’s a big workload. But when you’re young, you can handle it. I think we’re all kind of middle-aged now, and you’re not quite as resilient as you were in your 20s, early 30s.”

That makes Seether’s upcoming five-week co-headlining tour with Skillet sound like a drop in the bucket in comparison. The tour, which kicks off Tuesday in Asheville, N.C., hits Stage AE in Pittsburgh on Monday, with Tim Montana and Royale Lynn opening the show.

Seether is touring in support of their new album, “The Surface Seems So Far,” which will be released on Friday. The group’s ninth studio album, which features plenty of raw but radio-friendly songs, has been ready for months, and Stewart can’t wait for the band’s fans to hear it.

“We’re really proud of it. I think it’s a great album,” he said. “I know everyone says that, ‘Oh, the songs are great. You’re gonna love it.’ But I really think it’s great. … You’re always kind of cautiously optimistic releasing an album. You’re like, OK, well let’s expect the worst, but hope for the best.”

The first single, “Judas Mind,” already hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart and sets the tone for what turned into a heavy album.

“We’ll kind of sit around and come up with lists of what we think should make the album, should make the final cut. And it just happened that a lot of the really heavy stuff made it. And like you said, it’s very much Seether. It’s not a big departure,” he said. “… I think we stay true to ourselves and just make the music that we like. We just make the music that we’d want to hear.

“It definitely sounds like us. It’s a little bit heavier. I think there’s a bit of a maturity to the album, a maturity to the songs. And I think that shines through. But it’s very much just a balls-to-the-wall Seether album.”

With the upcoming tour, Stewart is looking forward to adding fresh songs the mix of their hits like “Broken,” “Remedy,” “Breakdown” and “Fake It.”

“I love playing new songs. Some of these songs we’ve been playing so, so many years, like, ‘Fine Again’ and ‘Broken.’ We’ve been playing these songs for over two decades now. So we’ve literally played them like thousands and thousands of times,” he said. “And I still love the songs, and they have a very special place in my heart. But at this stage, the songs almost play themselves. But there’s almost zero thought that kind of goes into it.

“It’s just a muscle memory thing that happens. Have two double whiskeys, and the music just kind of plays itself,” he said with a laugh. “With the new songs, you could still screw it up.”

Although Stewart is looking forward to hitting the road, he’ll be missing his family, with a 2-year-old daughter and 10-month old son at home.

“So maybe it’s good that they’re little, because the little guy definitely doesn’t understand,” he said. “My daughter’s just starting to realize when I’m gone. She understands now that, oh, Daddy has to go to work.”

Seether frontman Shaun Morgan, in a recent interview , said he was leaning into the “dad rock” aspect of the band since most of the members are now fathers. Stewart, who said the band has “a lot still be be angry about, angry enough to write heavy music,” said his perspective has changed after becoming a parent.

“You have a different outlook on life and a different set of problems and things to be concerned about,” he said. “We all have kids now, and now you’re worried about your kids, what does the future hold for my children and this and that. Having kids really changes you. I didn’t realize how profound of a change it would be.”

Stewart said there’s a different kind of satisfaction from playing live, something that just can’t be replicated.

“You want to get out there and do shows and get to where you’re on stage and feel that just from the crowd and the adrenaline rush,” he said. “And then that first song, you hear the people cheering and you see their faces light up and you play a song that you know that they’ve been waiting for. There’s just nothing that compares to that. And once that drug’s kind of in your system, it never goes away. It’s in there for life and you kind of mold your life around that desire for that feeling and for the music.”

With Seether’s tour for their new album just getting underway, the need to start working on new music isn’t there.

“Toward the end of this touring cycle, we’ll start thinking about new music, coming up with ideas,” Stewart said. “Being an established band now, you don’t feel the urgency of, ‘OK, we need to get an album out as soon as possible. We don’t want to lose that momentum. We don’t want the fans to forget about us.’ In the beginning, you can’t afford to not tour, you can’t afford to take too much time off to write.

“Whereas now we can take a step back if we’re not satisfied that an album is ready or that there’s enough material to make a decent album. … So not having that time crunch and that pressure, that definitely helps a lot.”

The singer/songwriter will play 11 shows throughout the U.S. and UK, beginning Oct. 23

Zayn Malik  is finally taking his show on the road.

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the One Direction alum made a silent, surprise appearance on The Tonight Show where he announced his first-ever solo headlining tour since he left One Direction  in 2015.

Malik, 31, crashed Jimmy Fallon's monologue where he appeared from behind the curtain in a black leather jacket holding a coffee mug and a note for the host, 49. He then proceeded to wave to the audience and took over Fallon's laptop where he played his single "Stardust" from his latest album, Room Under the Stairs , which was released on May 17.

Malik then dropped the coffee mug and the note on the actor/comedian's desk.

Fallon then read the note aloud to an audience in a quasi-British accent, which announced the singer/songwriter's tour.

The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon/YouTube

“Hey Jimmy, great to see you, mate,” he began. “I’m going on my first-ever tour this autumn. So maybe when you’re done picking apples with your buds, you can come check out my Stairway to the Sky tour across the U.S. and UK.”

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the "Dusk Till Dawn" musician officially announced his Stairway to the Sky tour.

The "intimate 11-city tour" will hit cities throughout the U.S. and U.K. this fall, kicking off on Oct. 23 in San Francisco, and making stops in Las Vegas and Washington before wrapping the North American leg on Nov. 2 in New York City.

On Nov. 30, Malik will then head to the U.K. for a show in Edinburgh, with stops in Manchester, London and more before concluding on Dec. in Newcastle.

Presale tickets for the Stairway to the Sky tour will be available starting Thursday, Sept. 19 with additional presales running throughout the week. A general on-sale will begin on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. local at  inzayn.com .

In May, Malik performed his first-ever headlining solo gig at London’s Shepherd's Bush Empire, which was also his first concert since he left One Direction.

During the gig, he performed songs from Room Under the Stairs for the first time for fans in a night he called “unforgettable” in  an Instagram post .

In  fan-captured footage  of the concert, the "Pillow Talk" artist told the audience, “I missed this," and in a clip he shared himself, he thanked fans for “all of the love and support over the years,” and for waiting for him to perform live.

“This is an exciting night,” Malik said at the show. “I’m very grateful to you all, and I hope you have a great night."

Taylor Swift Is ‘Ready for the Next Era of Her Life’ After Tour: What She and Travis Kelce Want for 2025 (Exclusive)

In order to view the video, please allow Manage Cookies

Travis Kelce didn’t accompany girlfriend Taylor Swift to the MTV VMAs on September 11, but she made sure his presence was felt when she took home a Moon Man — her seventh of the night — for Video of the Year for her song “Fortnight.” After thanking her collaborators, including Post Malone , Swift turned the focus to Kelce, saying she’ll never forget how he cheered her on between takes on the set. “Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic,” she said as the crowd cheered excitedly. “So I want to thank him for adding that to our shoot because I will always remember that.”

The sweet shout-out came on the heels of a whirlwind — and highly visible — week for the pair. On September 8, their PDA lovefest stole the show at the U.S. Open, where they kissed, danced and at one point passionately sang the 2003 Darkness song “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” to each other. In the days prior, they hit up Brooklyn hotspot Lucali and attended the wedding of model Karen Elson at Electric Lady Studios. The outings — along with Swift’s gushing VMAs acceptance speech — quickly helped dispel rumors that the couple have been faking their relationship for PR purposes. On September 2, phony documents outlining a media breakup plan for Kelce and Swift went viral; Kelce’s PR firm, Full Scope, threatened to take legal action over the “false and fabricated” papers, which bore the company’s logo.

It’s become clear that the romance between the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and the Grammy-winning singer is as real as it gets, and their connection has only gotten stronger amid public scrutiny and the challenges that come with high-profile, high-pressure careers. “They’ve built a lot of trust. They both knew what they signed up for and navigated it well,” a source exclusively shares in the latest Us Weekly cover story. “They’re in love and don’t care what others think.”

Now, after more than a year of dating, they’re entering a new phase of their relationship as Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour winds down. “Taylor and Travis are very committed and serious about their future,” says a second source. “Taylor is ready for the next era of her life. She knows it will be special.”

Savoring the Moments

Swift and Kelce are making the most of her break before she hits the road again in late October for the final dates of her tour, which ends on December 8 after a 152-show run. “It’s been amazing since Taylor and Travis reunited,” says the first source, adding that they’ve been “loving every minute together” since Swift returned to the States in late August. They hung out at her $17 million Rhode Island home last month with a host of A-list pals, including Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper and Jason and Kylie Kelce .

“Taylor’s been working nonstop and wanted to spend some time there while the weather is still good,” a source previously told Us . “It was really the first time everyone had come together in one place in a long time.”

One of Swift and Kelce’s favorite things to do is hunker down at home and enjoy each other’s company. “They are both chill people who love their downtime,” says the first source, adding that their secret date nights are decidedly simple: “Staying in is a luxury for them. They enjoy cooking dinner together. It’s a refreshing contrast to their [public] lives.” The second source says they’ve found a “good balance” between hitting the town and lying low.

Swift will spend the next few weeks attending as many Chiefs games as she can (she was in attendance for the season opener on September 5). “She loves cheering Travis on and supporting him as much as he loves cheering her on,” the first source says. (Kelce hit up his 14th Eras Tour concert on July 18 in Germany, a few days before the Chiefs’ training camp began.) Adds the second source: “Taylor has come to love football and is really excited the season is back.” (Kelce recently confirmed Swift has been drawing up plays for him.) “She’s loved being around the football community,” says the source. “It’s a reprieve from work for her, and Travis is excited she’s fully ingrained in his world.” Swift will likely be on hand to celebrate his October 5 birthday with family and friends at his Kelce Car Jam in Kansas City.

In It to Win It

They’ve been having “serious conversations” about what’s next, says the second source. “Taylor has expressed how excited she is to settle down after her tour concludes. They’re on the same page.” The first source says friends hope an engagement is around the corner. “They both see marriage as something they want sooner rather than later, and they both want kids. Taylor has always [been excited by] the idea of marriage and starting a family. She just hadn’t found The One until now.” Kelce is also ready to take things up a level and “has dropped hints to those close to him,” says the source. (In a September 10 interview with Us , rapper — and Swiftie — Flavor Flav even said he’d love to officiate their wedding!)

It’s going to be a busy couple of months. Kelce’s new Ryan Murphy FX series, Grotesquerie , is out September 25 and his game show, Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? , premieres October 16. He and his brother also signed a massive $100 million deal for their “New Heights” podcast, and he’s set to make a cameo in Adam Sandler ’s upcoming Happy Gilmore sequel . “Taylor is happy for Travis’ success,” notes the first source, “and encourages him to go for new opportunities.”

Swift hasn’t made any big decisions about her post-tour career plans just yet. “She’s looking forward to taking a break and relaxing. She’s exhausted,” the source says, adding that Swift is ready to focus on herself and her future with Kelce. “That’s the plan for 2025,” says the second source. “Taylor’s really eager to start the next chapter with Travis.”

Zayn is preparing to embark on his first-ever solo tour nearly a decade after he officially split from One Direction in 2015.

The former boy band star , 31, announced on Wednesday (September 18) that he would be bringing his 11-date Stairway to the Sky tour to the US and UK beginning this fall.

“Appreciate your patience, love, and support,” the “Pillowtalk” singer wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait to enjoy great music together. This time I really mean soon see you in 35 days.”

Zayn teased the tour during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon – his first TV appearance in eight years since he performed his 2016 song “Alienated” on the NBC late-night show.

The tour will be in support of his long-awaited fourth studio album, Room Under the Stairs , which he released earlier this year.

He previously described the record as an opportunity “for the listener to get more insight on me personally as a human being – my ambitions, my fears.”

Where will Zayn be touring?

Zayn will kick off his tour in the US on October 23 in San Francisco, California, before hitting Las Vegas, Nevada (October 25); Los Angeles, California (October 27); Washington DC (October 30); and New York City, New York (November 2).

After a two-week pause, the British artist will return to the UK, bringing the tour to Edinburgh, Scotland on November 20. He will then make his way to Leeds (November 23), Manchester (November 24), London (November 26) and Wolverhampton (November 29) before concluding in Newcastle (December 3).

Zayn first rose to fame as a solo contestant on The X Factor in 2010. Following his elimination, he was brought back and partnered with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction.

The five-piece act went on to become a global sensation, releasing a string of Top 10 albums and embarking on several world tours.

In 2015, amid their world tour in Asia, Zayn announced his shock departure.

“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band,” he said in a statement at the time , explaining: “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”

The rest of the band went on permanent hiatus soon after in 2016.
