We recently compiled a list of the 10 Worst Cruise Stocks to Buy Now According to Short Sellers . In this article, we are going to take a look at where Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL) stands against the other cruise stocks.

The cruise industry accelerated after taking a significant hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. As per the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), ~35.7 million passengers are anticipated to set sail in 2024. This translates to 6% growth as compared to 2019. JP Morgan Research highlighted that major cruise lines enjoyed a successful 2024 wave season between January and March when operators provided the best deals. CLIA highlighted that, in 2023, the passenger volume touched a record 31.7 million, exhibiting a rise of 7% over 2019 levels.

Wall Street experts believe that travel exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are well-placed to soar on the back of a resurgence in consumer demand for travel-related activities, supported by post-pandemic recovery and changing consumer behaviors. Amidst some short-term challenges, the long-term outlook for the travel sector is positive as a result of demographic shifts and an increased preference for experiential spending.

Positive Demographic Shifts Should Be a Primary Growth Enabler

Earlier, Baby Boomers used to make up the core consumer base for the broader cruise industry. Today, however, an increased number of younger travelers continue to come on board. As per CLIA, ~73% of Millennials and Gen X travelers mentioned that they would consider a cruise vacation. Also, a renowned cruise company has recently mentioned that half of its cruise customers are Millennials or younger. This is because of rising affluence. Moreover, according to the bank’s research, the spending capacity of Millennial customers has seen an increase of ~49% since 2019. Today, the average net worth of an individual aged 40 or under sits at ~$259K.

The cruises continue to attract more first-time passengers. The cruise companies are seeing “new-to-cruise” in their 2025 bookings, with this customer category rising by more than 30% versus a year ago.

The bank believes that cruise operators are improving and modernizing their offerings to make them appealing and highlighted that key operators continue to invest in new hardware, notably mega-ships and private destinations. This has been driving more eyeballs to the broader cruise and tourism industry, accelerating new-to-cruise acquisition. CLIA recently highlighted that the cruise industry has been deploying billions in new ships and engines which give flexibility to use low to zero-GHG fuels with little to no engine modification.

Cruises Over Land-based Activities

According to a survey by the bank’s research division held in April, only ~29% of respondents have excess savings. Notably, ~45% of the respondents are expected to spend less in discretionary categories over the upcoming 12 months. This implies an increased cautious behavior even in the environment of moderating inflation.

This scenario is placing cruise voyages, that are cheaper than land-based vacations, in a strong position. Consumers are focused on value within discretionary categories. The value spread between cruises and land-based alternatives stood at 25%-30% today as compared to 10%-15% pre-pandemic. Despite higher inflation, cruise lines continue to focus on improved experiences, without compromising quality or service. This should further enhance their value.

Despite a tough consumer spending environment, both ticket and onboard prices increased over the past few months. This means that the demand backdrop is strong for the overall cruise industry. The bank’s research shows that more than 85% of tickets have been booked for 2024, with a focus now turning to 2025 and bookings already exceeding historical levels. Moreover, the industry should grow revenues by high-single digits over the upcoming 5 years, tapping ~3.8% of the global vacation market by 2028.

Our methodology

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL) operates as a global cruise company. It operates through brands that mainly serve the contemporary, premium, and deluxe segments of the cruise vacation industry.

Short sellers believe that the company’s valuations have outpaced its fundamentals, as Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL)’s stock trades at ~11.99x its forward earnings, while the sectoral average remains at ~7.75x. Another issue that might impact the company’s margins in 2H 2024 is its debt burden and the resulting interest expenses. As of the end of 2Q 2024, its long-term debt sat at over ~19 billion. Apart from this, it has long-term operating lease liabilities and other long-term liabilities of $591 million and $522 million, respectively. For FY 2024, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL) expects its NCC (Net Cruise Costs), excluding Fuel, per APCD to increase approximately 6.0% in constant currency and as-reported.

Wall Street analysts believe that Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL)’s stock is well-placed to see strong growth in 2H 2024 as optimized occupancy and productivity initiatives should keep a check on the company’s costs over the long term. Also, consumer interest in travel maintained momentum for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL) in 2024, continuing the healthy demand and strong pricing trends in the business.

The redeployment of the fleet was wrapped up in mid-2022, with occupancy returning to historical levels. These factors led to the normalization of profits and cash flow. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL) saw record pricing in 2023 (13% above its 2019 level), with further growth anticipated moving forward, given strong booking patterns and price levels as a result of a healthy consumer appetite.

Analysts at UBS Group increased their target price on the shares of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL) from $168.00 to $183.00, giving it a “Buy” rating on 31 st  July. Notably, 48 hedge funds held stakes in the company.

Ariel Investments , an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2024 investor letter. Here is what the fund said:

“Global cruise vacation company,  Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.  (NYSE:RCL), advanced on another quarterly earnings beat and subsequent raise in full-year guidance. Stronger than anticipated consumer demand, healthy onboard spend, robust pricing and solid cost containment lifted recent results. Additionally, RCL is benefitting from several new megaships, more island destinations and re-entry into the China market. The resiliency of the core cruise consumer, in combination with management’s superior operational expertise and revised earnings outlook, lays the foundation for RCL to exceed its three-year strategic imperative, the Trifecta Program, a year earlier than expected.”

Overall RCL ranks 4th on our list of the worst cruise stocks to buy now according to short sellers. While we acknowledge the potential of RCL as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some deeply undervalued AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and doing so within a shorter timeframe. Call it the ultimate cruise ship for short weekend getaways.

When Royal Caribbean 's giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in 2024 with a series of three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral , Florida, it'll instantly shoot to the top of the list of the best ships available for short getaways in North America.

Not just to the top — but miles above its closest competitor.

The still-under-construction, 236,860-ton vessel, which will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world when it debuts, will be far bigger, newer and more amenity-filled than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

In short, it'll be the ship that everybody wants — or should want — for a short cruise. And, for Royal Caribbean, that's the point of what some longtime industry watchers may have seen as an unusual first deployment for the vessel.

Cruise lines often assign their newest and biggest ships to longer seven-night sailings — a more lucrative market — and place older and smaller vessels on shorter runs. However, Royal Caribbean is taking the opposite approach with Utopia of the Seas.

In the great chess game that is ship deployment among the major cruise lines, Royal Caribbean's announcement Tuesday that Utopia of the Seas would focus on short sailings when it debuts in July 2024 was a king-killer move in the short-cruise market. A checkmate moment.

Aiming at first-time cruisers

Royal Caribbean's plans for Utopia of the Seas are all about drawing new customers who have never cruised before — or what is known as the "new-to-cruise" market.

People who are new to cruising are leery of booking long sailings in case they don't love cruising as much as they hoped. As a result, they tend to gravitate to short three- and four-night cruises where they can test the waters, so to speak. Until relatively recently, many of the ships devoted to such short sailings out of North American ports weren't the best the industry had to offer. To try the best ships, you had to book a longer sailing.

That all began to change in the last four years as Royal Caribbean began deploying some of its best vessels on short itineraries out of Florida, starting in 2019 with two snazzily upgraded vessels , Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas, and continuing this year with an announcement that one of the line's giant and much-loved Oasis-class vessels, Allure of the Seas, would begin short cruises out of Florida later this year .

Allure of the Seas is one of the biggest, most amenity-filled ships in the world, and its deployment on short cruises will be a game changer for the niche. However, the deployment of Utopia of the Seas on short cruises is even more game changing.

Of the five giant Oasis-class ships now sailing, which are the five biggest and most amenity-filled cruise ships currently at sea, Allure of the Seas is one of the oldest (it was unveiled nearly 13 years ago), and it's the only one that lacks a massive water park, a marquee feature for the series. It also lacks several other features found on newer Oasis-class ships.

The deployment of Utopia of the Seas on short cruises as its first mission after debuting in 2024 marks a first for Royal Caribbean. Never before has the line sent one of its new Oasis-class ships directly into short-cruise service.

"We've made a strategic shift to put our best products on short getaways," Royal Caribbean Chief Marketing Officer Kara Wallace told TPG this week. "Our goal really is to bring and attract the next generation of cruisers, and Utopia is a ship that will do that."

Noting that the shift in strategy goes back to the deployment of Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas on short cruises in 2019, Wallace said the idea was to "make that first impression, the best impression" with first-time cruisers.

Royal Caribbean has occasionally offered one-off short cruises on Oasis-class ships in the past as part of ship redeployments, and the sailings have always been a hit with customers, Wallace said. That, in part, gave the line "the confidence to ... move forward and make a move like this."

Another factor behind the move, says Wallace: Vacationers these days are increasingly eager for short getaways. There are a growing number of people who would rather take multiple short vacations in a year than just one or two longer vacations, she suggested.

"People are choosing to do more frequent shorter getaways, and if they want like a teaser, a sampler platter (of a cruise), Utopia of the Seas is it," she said.

As one of Royal Caribbean's newest and biggest ships, Utopia of the Seas will have nearly all of the most popular marquee features found on various ships across the Royal Caribbean fleet.

Like the five other Oasis-class vessels, Utopia of the Seas will have three separate pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, a surfing simulator, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on the top decks.

Inside the vessel, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine, plus two casinos, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows. It will even have indoor ice skating rinks.

In addition, as Royal Caribbean announced Tuesday, Utopia of the Seas will have several new-for-the-line venues, including an as-yet-unnamed dining experience that will draw on snazzy technology to create a "locomotive journey" as you dine. Royal Caribbean was coy about the latter concept but released the artist's rendering below as a tease of what customers can expect.

The line also said the pool areas of the vessel will have a "reimagined" look as compared to the pool areas on earlier Oasis-class ships, and the massive, 10-deck-high Ultimate Abyss dry slide that is a signature feature of several other Oasis-class ships will be 43 feet longer on Utopia of the Seas.

Wallace also hinted at two other tweaks to the Ultimate Abyss slide that could make it the most over-the-top slide experience at sea: the addition of "booster rollers" on its inside that will make riders go faster, and new transparent tube sections.

"People on the outside can see you going down the slide, and [riders] get that glimpse of daylight before it goes back to dark again," she said.

Two giant new Royal Caribbean ships on the way

Utopia of the Seas is just one of two giant new ships that Royal Caribbean plans to debut in 2024 — both among the biggest cruise vessels in the world.

The other new vessel, Icon of the Seas , will arrive in January 2024 and has been getting more press of late as it'll be the biggest cruise ship ever built.

Icon of the Seas also will boast a number of buzzworthy new features, as you can see in our sneak-peek video below. TPG's video team got exclusive access to the ship in May at the shipyard in Finland where it's being built.

Wallace said the two ships are aimed at two different markets. Icon of the Seas, which will do seven-night voyages out of Miami, is positioned as the "world's best family vacation" option, while Utopia of the Seas, which will sail from Port Canaveral, is the ship for the "world's biggest weekend."

"The exciting thing about them [is] that they're doing two different products out of two different markets," Wallace said. "Icon is really focused and doubling down on the family market, and Utopia is all about the weekend and the short getaway."

Utopia of the Seas will rotate between three-night sailings starting on Fridays that end on Monday mornings and four-night sailings that start on Mondays and end on Friday mornings.

All of the Utopia of the Seas sailings will include a day at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, which Wallace notes will turn the short cruise experience on the ship into a resort experience at an epic level.

When you include Perfect Day's water park, pool and beach offerings, it's a trip where "there's not three slides [the number on Utopia of the Seas], there's actually 17 slides in a weekend. There's eight pools. There's six beaches," she said. "When you think about all of these things together, it really makes this the best possible short getaway there is."

Members of Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society loyalty program will be able to book initial sailings for Utopia of the Seas starting Thursday. The ship's sailings will open to the general public for bookings Friday.

Ushering in the first year-round season of 3- and 4-night cruises on an Oasis Class cruise ship, Allure OTS is scheduled to sail to The Bahamas & Perfect Day at CocoCay until July 2023 and then to settle in PortMiami for the remainder of the year. There is more in store on shore with Nassau and CocoCay.

Independence of the Seas (from PortMiami FL). The amplified ship offers 5-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day at CocoCay voyages, as well as 4-night Eastern Caribbean sailings visiting Labadee, Haiti .

Mariner of the Seas (from Galveston TX). For the first time, the amplified cruise ship is due to sail from Royal Caribbean’s new US$125M cruise terminal in Galveston, the world’s first LEED Zero Energy facility, that is generating 100% of the energy it needs through onsite solar panels. The ship’s 4- and 5-night escapes visit tropical destinations like Cozumel and Costa Maya . 

Navigator of the Seas (from Los Angeles CA ). 3-, 4- or 7-night voyages to Catalina Island , Puerto Vallarta , Cabo San Lucas , Mazatlan , and Ensenada, Mexico .

Enchantment of the Seas (from Tampa FL) 4- and 5-night sailings to Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. 7-night summer voyages to Roatan , Belize City , Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Short on Time? Royal Caribbean Will Offer More Short Caribbean Cruises Departures

Royal Caribbean short cruises are in high demand so eight ships will sail new shorter cruises in 2024-25.

Weekend and midweek Caribbean cruise departures are set to increase over the coming years. Royal Caribbean just announced the lineup of short Caribbean cruises aboard eight ships that will sail to a variety of tropical destinations for the ultimate short getaways in 2024-2025.

It will be easier to make the most of your shorter vacation time with a larger variety of ships to choose. 

These include Allure of the Seas , the first Oasis Class ship to sail 3- to 4-night cruises. The ship will homeport at Port Canaveral, Florida. 

Here’s the newly announced line-up of short cruises and their ports of call.

What Royal Caribbean Ships Will Offer Short Cruises?

As mentioned above, there will be eight Royal Caribbean ships to offer short cruises. 

Among these are Mariner of the Seas that will set sail for the first time from Royal Caribbean’s new, net-zero terminal in Galveston, Texas. 

Plus, four more amplified (means “refurbished) ships with new and signature experiences on board, will depart from four different cities in Florida, Texas and California.

Royal Caribbean’s Private Destinations Included

Most of these short cruises stop at either of Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private destinations; Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas and Labadee, Haiti.

From white-knuckle waterslides in Thrill Waterpark to the new adults-only oasis Hideaway Beach opening in 2023, there are plenty of ways to enjoy a Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Labadee, Royal Caribbean’s private beach located along the northern coast of Haiti, has five stunning shorelines and a beautiful mountain backdrop.

Try the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line, the world’s longest overwater zipline, kick back on white sand beaches and explore rich culture when shopping at the local crafters and artisans kiosks.

Caribbean ports of call include stops at beautiful destinations in the Eastern and Western Caribbean that include Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Roatan, Honduras. California port stops include Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan, Mexico; and more.

Royal Caribbean Year-Round Short Getaways for 2024-25

• Allure of the Seas:  From Port Canaveral and Miami, Florida Ushering in the first year-round season of 3- to 4-night sailings on an Oasis Class ship, Allure will sail to the Bahamas and Perfect Day at CocoCay from Port Canaveral until July 2024. Allure then moves to Miami and continues short cruises.  
• Independence of the Seas:  From Miami, Florida Recently refurbished, Independence of the Seas will sail 5-night Western Caribbean and Perfect Day at CocoCay cruises. In addition, there will be 4-night Eastern Caribbean sailings that include a visit to Labadee, Haiti.   
• Mariner of the Seas:  From Galveston, Texas For the first time, this refurbished ship will sail from Royal Caribbean’s new $125 million cruise terminal in Galveston , Texas. Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas  4- and 5-night short cruises will visit Western Caribbean destinations like Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico. 
• Navigator of the Seas:  From Los Angeles, California Also recently refurbished to the tune of $115 million, Navigator of the Seas additions include a reimagined resort-style poolscape with the three-level poolside bar The Lime & Coconut. The Blaster with longest aqua coaster at sea. Choose from 3-, 4- or 7-night cruises to Catalina Island, California, and Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada and Mazatlan, Mexico.

Seasonal short cruises for 2024-25.

• Enchantment of the Seas: From Tampa, Florida Choose 4- or 5-night cruises and visit Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico on Enchantment . During summer, there will be 7-night cruises that head to Roatan, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; Cozumel and Costa Maya; and Perfect Day at CocoCay, The Bahamas.  
• Grandeur of the Seas: From Tampa and Fort Lauderdale, Florida Grandeur will continue sailing from Tampa through the summer then set sail on 4- and 5-night short cruises to The Bahamas, including Perfect Day at CocoCay and Cozumel, Mexico. In winter, choose a 5-night vacation to Labadee and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.  
• Liberty of the Seas:  From Fort Lauderdale, Florida After cruising the summer in the Big Apple, Royal Caribbean sends Liberty of the Seas to Fort Lauderdale for the winter, alternating 3- and 4-night getaways to The Bahamas, stopping at Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau on every cruise.  
• Voyager of the Seas: From Port Canaveral, Florida Royal Caribbean’s amplified ship, Voyager, will sail 4- and 5-night winter getaways on a varied lineup of Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises to The Bahamas. Of course the cruise will include a Perfect Day at CocoCay. Plus Nassau, Bahamas; Cozumel, Mexico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Labadee.
