This September, travelling by train through East London and Essex will be a far more enjoyable experience thanks to 12 brand new Class 720 "Aventra" trains set to enter passenger service with c2c rail. Ahead of their launch, MyLondon went behind the scenes with c2c to find out what passengers can expect.

The long-awaited fully walkthrough trains will run between Fenchurch Street / Liverpool Street , Grays, Southend and Shoeburyness , offering around double the seats per train than the existing fleet. They have welcome mod-cons including WiFi, air-conditioning, two spaces for wheelchairs and pushchairs, four bicycle storage spaces and will be equipped with accessible toilets. They are also fully equipped with CCTV and passenger alarms for added security. In line with c2c policy, trains do not have first class seating areas, but include a “Quiet Zone” where passengers are asked not to have loud conversations or play audio aloud their smartphones.

The £100million trains were constructed by Alstom in Derby, at the same factory the 70 trains for the Elizabeth line were built . They are similar to other "Aventra" models of train currently in use on Greater Anglia, London Overground and LNR. The operators which use Aventra trains have recently tended to appear towards the top of the league tables for train reliability.

c2c Class 720 Aventra onboard facilities

c2c’s managing director Rob Mullen told MyLondon: "The new trains are going to really help us boost our capacity for passengers, each train has an additional carriage and we'll start soft launching them in September, with the hope of rolling them all out in the December timetable. In that timetable, we'll really be able to assess where they can go."

The new Aventra trains, like the existing Electrostar trains, are capable of 100mph, but the linespeed and overhead electric power supply on the c2c route (managed by Network Rail) prohibits them going over 75mph. Mr Mullen explains: "From my perspective, this is the first step in giving c2c a modern fleet and a modern railway. On our line we have demands for extra freight trains, extra passenger services and there's huge housing development and urban regeneration going on so we're trying to build a consensus for everyone in this part of the world that we need real rail investment. For that to work we need capacity, and linespeed plus signalling is part of that, so when we enter our next round of discussions [with government and stakeholders], this is something we'll consider."

c2c Class 720 interior

The faster acceleration will help trains catch back time quicker if they are delayed - c2c rail is one of the most punctual railways in the country, offering delay repay compensation for as little as two minutes to smartcard holders. Train drivers will undergo an intense five day training course to familiarise themselves with the new trains, including time on a state-of-the-art simulator. A new driver training centre has opened in Southend to facilitate this.

The walk-through carriages with full CCTV will help the railway become a safer environment as it 'designs out' opportunities or crime onboard trains. c2c's security partner staff and British Transport Police (BTP) officers are familiarising themselves with them accordingly. Kirsty Thomas, Amulet security operations manager for c2c's London and Tilbury loop stations, explained: "Safeguarding is a really important part of my team's work and making sure we understand all the parts of our network so we can keep people feeling secure is really beneficial. On these trains, we can carry out patrols differently than with the existing fleet and it's much easier for us to be a visible presence people can reach out to."

Driving cab class 720/6

Her comments are echoed by BTP Inspector Jay Bibby who explained the open-plan layout ensures anyone feeling intimidated by something onboard has more options: "As the train is walkthrough, passengers can move about if there's a disturbance, and of course there's CCTV. The train has WiFi so passengers can report crime via our Railway Guardian app directly too . We work closely with c2c and our partners to identify trends of crime on the route and as part of that we'll look at how we patrol these trains tactically. We have an ongoing operation called Imperial where we make sure passengers heading to the beach or events can have a nice time and get home safely without any problems."

c2c hopes that if these trains are successfully introduced, future orders could follow. The 12 trains will initially complement, not replace, any of the existing trains - although they are now reaching 24 years old.

Our verdict

Overall, we think the new trains are a big win. They're more comfortable, brighter and safer than the existing trains. At peak hours, the section c2c shares with London Underground between West Ham and Upminster can be very busy, so the extra seating and standing room will help. Each five carriage train can carry 695 passengers (459 seated).

There are two minor drawbacks of the design. The walk-through carriages, whilst making things more secure, mean it will be difficult to maintain the Quiet Zone at the very end of the train as noise carries through. A Thameslink-style partition may improve things.

c2c Quiet Zone

The second is that some carriages have three-across seating, meaning aisles are very narrow and when the aisle seats are occupied, it's harder to grab the aids attached to each seat. Fortunately, much of the train is very spacious - you can avoid the three-across seating in the Quiet Zone towards the very end of the train.

The accessible toilets have a very practical design, and it is welcome to see a full-length mirror in them. USB ports and sockets at every seat is great for connectivity, and the lighting and colour schemes do well to give the train a calm, neutral ambience. The trains are also noticeably quieter, with more powerful air-con than their older counterparts. Together with improvements at c2c stations such as Barking and Fenchurch Street , the route will be far more enjoyable to travel on now than in recent years.

Changes to c2c fares as it moves towards contactless payment system

travel updates c2c

A NEW fares structure from regional train operator c2c is to be introduced from next weekend.

A statement from the compnay issued today (Monday, 27 November) says: “In preparation for the launch of contactless pay as you go across its entire rail network, c2c is introducing a new and simplified fares and ticketing model and revised peak travel times on Sunday, 3 December.

“This will make the planning of trips, paying for travel and accessing services quicker and easier for customers than before.

“As announced by the Department for Transport (DfT) earlier in the year, c2c is one of five train operators working with Government during Phase 1 of its initiative to extend the current contactless pay as you go area.

“The introduction of c2c’s new ticketing model will align c2c fares and associated travel conditions with the easy-to-understand Transport for London (TfL) and wider pay as you go networks.

Key changes to fares and ticketing include: Fares revised so that all single tickets are priced at half the equivalent return (both in the Peak and Off-Peak).

Introduction of a new weekday evening peak between 16:00 – 19:00 on services leaving from or going via a London* station

Super-Off-Peak tickets withdrawn, with all weekend and bank holiday travel classified Off-Peak

*Stations that are within Zones 1-6 c2c Managing Director, Rob Mullen, said: “As part of our ongoing commitment to making c2c a more attractive and accessible railway, the introduction of simple and easy-to-understand fares and peak travel times will make searching and buying tickets easier and more straightforward for our customers.

“We already offer a wide range of ticketing and payment options to best suit customers’ needs, and we are working hard to ensure that everyone has access to the correct tickets and best value fares for their journey.

“Moving forward, all of our ticketing products – Smartcards, traditional paper, e-tickets and contactless pay as you go (when launched) – if purchased on the day of travel, will offer fares at the same price.

“Removing the barriers to rail travel remains a priority to the team at c2c. With simplified fares in place in readiness for contactless pay as go, and e-ticketing coming soon, we believe that our easy to access and easy to understand tickets will give customers added confidence when travelling on our network.”

c2c adds: “Customers can continue to access great value weekend and bank holiday travel – offering 40% off the standard Off-Peak Return fare – by buying Online advance tickets direct from c2c three or more days before travel.

“Long-term ‘Flexi’, weekly, monthly and annual season tickets are also not affected by fares or peak time changes.”

Last minute cancellations

As a regular long standing passenger I have always found C2C a great mode of transportation. I understand that there are national strikes this week so I checked the C2C app for my travel the night before. The service was running every half hour so I planned my journey for work. To my dismay, in the morning of Tuesday 3rd January, I found the service wasn’t running at all. This was very disappointing. I purchase a season ticket as I know your service has always been excellent but now I feel dubious to do so in the future. Like many others, it affects all our work lives as well. I hope this feedback will help to ensure that both parties come to an agreement soon to end this strike.

Needs a lot of improvement

You get there in the end but the app is clunky. The time out is frustrating as it allows you to enter what you’re looking for, then tells you you’ve been away a while, then resets and wipes all the information you’ve just added. Selecting stations in live travel is painful, the list updates that few nanoseconds too late so you’re just about to select the station at the top and it suddenly replaces it with your most recent, which is the same one you’ve started with, so you end up with the same station twice and have to reselect. And by far the most frustrating thing is loading tickets onto smart cards, even when you get a blue tick you have to check the actual tickets on your smart card to make sure it’s there, which it often isn’t. It can take tens of attempts to actually get the ticket loaded, even if waiting the couple of minutes that the app warns you about. I bought my first flexi season this morning and getting that to load was horrendous.

The app has issues

To begin with, I lost two of my smart cards. One was stolen, one was lost I cannot remove the stolen card details from the app and neither can I reported stolen When I lost my second card, i was able to order a replacement and paid £20 to transfer my ticket allowance from the lost card to the new card. I received the replacement card by post and could not confirm receipt of the card on the app because of a server issues. I’ve been backwards and forwards with the customer service team to figure out a way to accept the new card on the app/my account, and the transfer the money I am owed to the replacement card. One month later, this issue is still not fixed and my money are blocked with c2c. I cannot register the replacement card separately to my name either. Customer service have asked me to order yet another card and they will try and transfer the allowance again. This has been an incredibly painful experience with backward and forward emails and 0 phone calls from the management team. The app has potential, saves a lot of time and hassle, however it needs more work. I’d rate the app a 3 and the customer service a 1 for not providing the service I have paid for.

c2c train live updates as storm causes travel chaos across train network

There is disruption to train services today (April 16)

  • Updated 11:02, 16 APR 2024

A fallen tree is impacting c2c services on April 16, 2024

Rail users are facing disruption on various lines in Essex as an aftermath of windy conditions felt overnight. A fallen tree has caused problems for c2c services across parts of the county whilst there are also problems with the London Overground.

C2C services are suspended when travelling via Upminster eastbound between Barking and Pitsea and Barking and Grays. Services are being diverted via Purfleet. An object caught on the overhead line at Wood Street, meanwhile, means there is no London Overground service between Hackney Downs and Chingford.

Essex was subject to a Met Office yellow weather warning for wind all day on Monday. Meteorologists warned that wind speeds would stay around 20 to 25mph but could reach highs of 50mph.

In Chelmsford, emergency services were called to The Range after windy weather caused some damage to the front of the High Street store. The shop remained open, however, with notes on the door encouraging visitors to enter through their Bond Street doors.

Fallen tree blocks Essex road and hits bus stop after storm rips tree from trunk

Residents in an Essex village have been praised by Essex Police after they helped remove a fallen tree that was blocking the road and struck a bus stop. Officers were called to Heath Road in Bradfield shortly before 2pm on Monday (April 15) to reports of a large oak tree falling.

Greater Anglia impacted yesterday

Yesterday rail users were seen gathered in large crowds at Liverpool Street Station in London after issues between the capital and Stansted Airport.

Trains from Liverpool Street and the Airport were unable to travel past Broxbourne.

Colchester Zoo attraction closed due to storm damage to the roof

Visitors to Colchester Zoo are currently unable to see the orangutans due to storm damage to the roof of their habitat. Rajang's Forest is currently closed but the Sea Lion tunnel remains open.

A spokesperson said: "It is not yet known how long the repairs will take to complete but please be assured our team are doing the utmost to reopen this area for visitors as soon as possible. Due to the location of damage being close to the main driveway, you may also experience some delays on entry and exit of the Zoo whilst this work takes place."

Colchester Zoo say orangutans Tiga, Mali and Tatau are not injured and "are quite intrigued watching the maintenance team fix their roof".

Compensation for delays

Rail users who are delayed might be eligible for compensation for your journey. Find out more about the compensation offered by c2c and how to claim, here .

The following information has been provided by c2c:

c2c smartcard users: You will receive automatic compensation provided you tapped your Smartcard at both the start and end of your journey. If you have not been able to do so, you will have to make a manual claim for your delay. This is because our system will not have full information about your journey, so cannot calculate your automatic compensation. We recommend you check your online account to ensure our automatic payments do reflect your actual delay. If you feel they do not, you can use your online account to correct the automatic system or alternatively submit a manual claim .

Paper ticket holders, Oyster and contactless card users : Please fill out your details on this online delay repay form .

London Overground part suspended near Chingford

There is no service between Hackney Downs and Chingford due to an obstruction on the overhead wires at Wood Street.

There is a good service on all other London Overground routes.

C2C asks customers only to travel "if essential"

Customers using c2c in the Upminster area of Essex have been asked to travel only if essential due to damage to overhead lines between Barking and West Horndon.

The damage is so extensive that fewer services are able to run between Barking and Pitsea towards Shoeburyness. A bus replacement service is in operation between Upminster and Grays via Ockendon and Chafford Hundred.

A c2c spokesperson said: "Network Rail engineers have been on site overnight and will continue to repair the overhead lines today.

"Services have been severely affected this morning and may continue into the afternoon peak so we are advising passenger to only travel if essential.

"Please check on National Rail Enquiries for the latest travel information if you do need to travel."

Good morning and welcome to this live blog. We'll bring you updates when we can.

UPDATE: Dallas man dies in I-5 crash that closed traffic in both directions near Salem

Portrait of Cherrill Crosby

One person is dead and another suffered serious injuries Thursday morning after a four-vehicle crash closed traffic in both directions on I-5 north of Salem and south of the Aurora-Donald Interchange, according to Oregon State Police.

Police said officers responded to the crash at 5:26 a.m. on I-5 near milepost 277.

A black Volkswagen Golf driven by a 35-year-old man from Cascades Locks was heading northbound on I-5 behind a maroon Dodge Ram driven by a 59-year-old Salem man, according to a preliminary investigation, and for unknown reasons rear-ended the Dodge Ram at “highway speeds.” Police did not say how fast the Volkswagen was going at the time of the crash.

Police said the driver of the Dodge pickup lost control and spun across the freeway lanes. A 30-year-old Albany woman driving a silver Nissan Altima behind the Volkswagen and Dodge was unable to avoid the crash and hit the Dodge pickup, according to police.

Police said the Dodge and Volkswagen went across the cable barrier and into I-5 southbound lanes. A 31-year-old Dallas man, identified as Kenneth Lee Whelchel, was driving a silver Ford Ranger and was hit, causing him to lose control and crash into the barrier, police said. Whelchel’s truck came to a stop about a quarter mile down the freeway and Whelchel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volkswagen was taken by LifeFlight to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The drivers of the Dodge and Nissan were reported to have minor injuries and were not taken from the scene by medics.

Police said I-5 was impacted for six hours during the crash investigation.

Tourist dies getting ‘Brazilian bum-lift’ in Turkey, organs missing from body

A 38-year-old mum died after flying to Turkey for plastic surgery. But it was what was discovered after her death that horrified family.

A British mum-of-two has died after having “Brazilian bum-lift” surgery in Turkey that she hoped would change her life.

Hairdresser Kaydell Brown, 38, from Sheffield in England, paid $10,500 for the procedure as well as a tummy tuck and a boob job, The Sun reports.

Her devastated sister Leanne, 40, who was due to have the same surgery, slammed the Istanbul clinic as a “shop that needs shutting down”.

The UK’s Foreign Office says 28 Brits have died after having cosmetic surgery in Turkey since 2019.

Kaydell jetted over for the surgery, which would have cost around $30,000 in the UK, in the hopes it would get her life “back on track”.

Kaydell and Leanne were in high spirits as they walked through arrivals at the airport in Turkey.

Two days later, Leanne who was due to be operated on next, was informed by medics that her sister had died in the recovery room.

Staff said they tried to wake Kaydell up after surgery and some fat must have travelled to her lungs.

Devastated Leanne recalled how the clinic broke the heartbreaking news to her.

Leanne told ITV News: “She went in for surgery about 9.30am and that was the last time I saw her.

“I was in the room waiting for her to come back. I’d asked a few times where she was, how long she was going to be and they just kept saying she was coming and then I got a knock on the door.

“Three people walked in and said, can you come with us please?

“They took me to a room and they just started trying to say, you know, there’s complications with surgery, you know things can happen. And I said, ‘has my sister died?’ And he just said, ‘I’m sorry, but yeah’.”

Kaydell was smiling and 'having a laugh' as she arrived in Turkey for the surgery, her sister said. Picture: ITV

Leanne was in deep shock and the clinic, it seemed, wanted to get her home.

She added: “They just gave me an envelope and said here’s your money back and here’s your sister’s money back.

“And here’s your flight. It’s like, sorry she’s dead, here’s your plane ticket.

“When you go in and you’re paying, they’re your best friends but when something goes wrong, you’re left to yourself, it’s goodbye.”

Leanne said she was refused permission to see her sister’s body and a flight back to the UK was arranged by the clinic.

The next day, Leanne was back at the airport – dazed, alone and fighting back tears as she headed home.

When Kaydell was eventually examined by a coroner in the UK, more devastating news was to come, large parts of her brain, lungs and heart were missing.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: “Our sympathies are with the family of Kaydell Brown.

“The UK government has been actively engaging with the Turkish government on how to support the safety of patients who decide they wish to travel to Turkey for medical treatment.

“We urge anyone considering a cosmetic procedure abroad to research the treatment in question, the qualifications of their clinician and the regulations that apply in the country they are travelling to.”

ITV News tracked down the team at the cosmetic surgery clinic in question.

Their written response read: “No evidence of organ trauma was found. We have handed the body untouched to the Coroner’s Office (in Turkey).”

The clinic added: “It is highly possible parts were removed while trying to determine the cause of death.”

Over a million foreigners visit Turkey for medical procedures every year – among them, 150,000 Britons.

And the number of British citizens travelling to Turkey is increasing faster than any other nationality, drawn by the cheap prices.

  • Travel guide and TV host Rick Steves says he has prostate cancer

TV travel host Rick Steves, who has been guiding Americans through Europe for nearly half a century, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is set to have surgery this fall.

“My doctor assures me that, if you’re going to get cancer, this is a good kind to get, and careful scans show no sign of it having spread,” the guidebook author said Wednesday in a post on the social platform X announcing his diagnosis. “There is a clear path forward to getting healthy, and this fall, I’ll be in the hospital for a few days having prostate surgery.”

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the U.S., according to the National Cancer Institute. This type of cancer usually grows very slowly, and surgery is a common treatment for patients who are in good health and whose tumor is only in the prostate gland, the institute says.

The longtime “Rick Steves’ Europe” host noted that his doctors are fine with him filming two new shows in France over the next three weeks. He said he plans to return home to Edmonds by mid-September ahead of his procedure at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

Steves, 69, did not say what stage the cancer was nor the type of surgery he would undergo, but remained positive about his prognosis and was eager to return to work.

“I’ll likely get my surgery in late September, be laid up for a month, and — God willing — be cancer-free and back at it by the end of October,” he said. The avuncular PBS host assured followers that he trusts his doctor and staff at the cancer center and said he has “lots more to be thankful for … including the support of friends and loved ones and a strong faith that I’m in good hands.”

“While the statistics tell me I should be just fine, I’ve been fortunate to have never spent a night in a hospital — and I find myself going into this adventure almost like it’s some amazing, really important trip,” he added.

“I feel good about my positive attitude — and I expect to take home some delightful, if intangible, souvenirs like: appreciating and seeing a vibrancy in the little things; appreciating the goodness in people and the treasure of friends and family; being wowed by modern medicine and the army of amazing, smart, and dedicated people that make it possible; appreciating what a blessing life, health, and this world to enjoy is; and — just in general — being more thankful.”

The bestselling author, who spends about four months a year abroad, said he’s looking forward to “many more years of happy travels, exciting collaborations, and beautiful friendships.” He also thanked his followers for their love and support and solicited “travel tips” as he sets off on his latest journey.

The radio host and travel columnist started his business, Rick Steves’ Europe, in 1976 and produces a bestselling guidebook series. His TV show ran on PBS from 2000 to 2020. The business also offers small group tours that take 30,000 travelers to Europe each year, according to his website .
