Tour itinerary

This ultimate mountain bike experience in Finale Ligure will take you to parts of the region where some locals have never ridden. You’ll crest ocean ridge lines and descend beech wood singletrack, sampling traditional food and produce as you go. Most of your climbing will be shuttle-assisted, from van and Land Rover to modified monster-truck so be prepared for a lot of downhill grinning on this tour. But don’t be fooled, there’s still some hard work involved!

You should arrive in Nice, France the day before your tour start date, to allow for any travel or baggage delays, and to give yourself time to relax before your adventure begins.

Your guide will meet you at the recommended hotel at Nice airport tomorrow morning.

Your driver will meet you at the recommended hotel in Nice in the morning and transfer you to Finale, where you’ll meet your guide. Over a coffee she will talk you through the all-important pre-trip briefing.

You’ll then build bikes or set up rental bikes, before hitting the trails in this beautiful corner of Italy. Your guide will take you for a short warm-up ride to prepare the legs and the mind for the Finale style of riding, before returning back to your hotel for your first evening meal as a team.

On your second day in Finale we will ride from your accommodation through the medieval old town, weaving through the high walls that protect you from the intense sun.

Our 4×4 shuttle will allow us to access a network of old and newly built trails on the backside of these coastal mountains. These trails have a very different feel to the front range – they are tighter and more natural feeling with some truly breathtaking chutes, berms and technical sections.

Today is your pedalling day. As we pedal out of town we will gradually leave behind the traffic and humid air, as we start climbing up and away from the seashore. Our climbs are not too difficult, but are sustained at 30-40 minutes each today.

The descents on this part of the mountain range are fun, flowing and at a perfect gradient for mountain biking, but every so often there are committing and technical rock features that will require brains to be in gear and ready for action.

Today we head to the backside of the Finale region. To access the first trail of the day we pedal through the Barbottina forest, one of Europe’s biggest beech forests, and descend into the rural area in the valleys inland where forestry is more important than the seaside tourism.

This is much less-travelled singletrack, but just a stone’s throw away from the main trail network around the NATO base.

With such a packed week of mountain biking and descending, we are having a half day today. In the morning we will hit some NATO Base runs, picking off your preferred trails, sampling some new guide favourites and dialling those features you have had your eye on all week.

Then we will retire to the beach for a relaxed Italian lunch, long coffees and sample some ice cold white wine while watching the world go by in Finale.

Today we head into the backcountry, where locals who have biked in this region for the past ten years haven’t even ridden these trails!

Setting off early morning from the piazza we will travel around an hour and half along the coast and inland to our secret trail network near the village of Nava.

On our final day in Finale you’ll have a calm start, watching people head for the beach and a day of sun-bathing, as you sip your cappuccino and enjoy a pastry.

After breakfast we’ll head to the bike room to collect your bikes and load them onto the trailer outside your hotel. From here we will head up into the mountains that surround Finale, around 1,100m in altitude. We have a very short climb to the start point of our day of ‘Finale Classics’.

Sadly this is the end of your Trail Riviera experience in Finale. It’s time to pack your bike and head for home. Your guide will arrange pick up times from your hotel and deliver you to the airport at around 12 noon to catch your flight home. Arrivederci!

We want you to have the best experience in Finale Ligure, so it’s important to be sure that this is the perfect mountain bike adventure, with the right level of challenge, for you.

You’re an experienced mountain biker, riding at least twice a week through the season and comfortable on: long descents with drops, steps, rocky sections, tight corners, steep sections, and sometimes very loose surfaces. Many of the trails are used for international enduro races, so expect technical features. Read more on our intermediate+ skill level .

Does this sound like you? Your vacation time is precious and we want to be absolutely sure that you’re making the most of it. Be honest with yourself, if this adventure isn’t right for you, we have other MTB tours that may be a better fit for your mountain biking ability.

Please note: The skill level required reflects an overall rating for the trails on the trip but you should expect to find sections and obstacles that push your ability levels.

Skill level: Intermediate+

  • You are generally comfortable riding most types of terrain in different conditions: singletrack, double track, muddy, dry, loose, bedrock…
  • You can brake, use gears and corner instinctively
  • You’ll have a go on moderate technical features, such as small rock gardens, small drops and steeper sections, but may get off and walk certain technical features
  • You mountain bike two or three times a week throughout your biking season
  • And the ‘+’ part of ‘Intermediate+’ means that you will be aiming to tackle more of those moderate technical features

Fitness level: 5/7

  • You have a good level of bike fitness, exercising at least three times every week throughout the year, for an hour at a time
  • You can ride a mountain bike for up to six hours a day at a moderate pace, with snack and photo stops, for three or more consecutive days
  • You can tackle two or three fairly significant climbs a day, up to 600 metres each

Typical trails you’ll be riding

  • Double track: undulating forest roads made up of hard-packed dirt and small rocks
  • Singletrack: mainly forested and ridgeline trails with roots crossing the trails; steep descents, some very flowing, others more technical; golf ball-sized rock gardens; dusty loose trails and purpose built MTB trails
  • Some of the trail sections are hundreds of years old, so are not always buff purpose built trails, they are natural walking trails that link villages across the region and surfaces may be soft and/or muddy at times

I had an amazing time riding in Finale with the other riders and our guide Louise! She gave us a great sampling of all the best local trails and she truly knows them like the back of her hand. I was even given great recommendations for more challenging trails that I could go out and ride on my own in the evenings. The food was just as good and she was able to get us reservations at a lot of great local restaurants. Louise even loaned me her personal foam roller! Overall great trip, my girlfriend and I hope to do more with H+I in the future.

Was euch erwartet

On this tour we dive into the backcountry of Finale Ligure. We start with the bike shuttle to Forte del Melogno. Arriving in the largest beech forest in Europe, we find significantly cooler temperatures in summer and have the opportunity to breathe in fresh air. We ride through lonely nature with completely different vegetation than on the coast. The trails offer super flow and are hardly used. Away from the crowds of Finale Ligure, we find the flow.

To reach the trails we take the bike shuttle. 2 single lifts are included in the coaching.

We start through the Barbottina beech forest, this is the largest beech forest in Europe and lies at just under 1000 metres above sea level. The trees provide shade and give us a pleasant climate. Through the forest we pedal to the first trail. With insane flow we jet through a really varied nature to Bardineto. After the obligatory espresso stop, it's back to the uphill - our goal the Brig Schenasso. But it is well worth it. Because once we reach the top, an alpine panorama awaits us with a view of the sea of Albenga. Via one of the flowing trails (Dondella or Green River) we reach Bardineto again. There, a delicious meal awaits us in a local restaurant. Strengthened, we go uphill on a forest road to the Guistenice Pass. Here, the sensational descent to Pietra Ligure awaits us at the end of the day.

We end on the beach with a well-deserved beer or aperitivo. Depending on the mood of the group, the tour can be shortened.

TRAIL BUILDING PROJECT

How we maintain finale outdoor region trail network.

Sustainable outdoor tourism means putting the territory first.

Finale Ligure and the Finale Outdoor Region, renowned for their world-class MTB trails, hold a unique distinction: they are not just another bike park! The expansive territory, home to hundreds of kilometres of MTB trails, is open to all. But how do we protect this precious heritage, the culmination of years of dedicated work by numerous enthusiasts, from the potential damage caused by the frequent passage of riders?

Planning day-to-day maintenance work on the trail network is necessary for this fantastic treasure to continue. This includes tasks such as erosion control, trail surface maintenance, and vegetation management, all of which are crucial for the sustainability and safety of our trails.  The only way we can meet the territory's needs and continue to offer some of the most enjoyable MTB trails in the world is by efficiently organizing the trail-building works.

Your support is crucial for us to achieve our mission. By backing the work of the Trail Builders and all the professionals and volunteers who strive to maintain and enhance our remarkable territory, you are directly contributing to our project.

Your contribution can make a significant difference. How can you help? A lready have the For You Card? Your support can go even further with a donation.

For each euro you donate, you will receive 100 extra points on your Card and contribute to 1 meter of trail maintenance!

Our Enduro tours are organized to maximize the climbs to connect as many trails as possible  (6-8 trails) , with some pedaling we will reach the local and secret trails that with a shuttle is impossible to achieve. 6 hours or pure riding with only 1,5 hour shuttle.

We do not organize downhill tours , because we don't want you to spend 4 hours in a Shuttle for only 3,5 hours of effective riding.

Training rank is divided in 3 categories:

  • LOW  [till 300 m vertical uphill]
  • MEDIUM  [till 900 m vertical uphill]
  • HIGH  [over 900 m vertical uphill]

I have just got back from a week at Chalet Chappelle in Morzine and I was blown away by the MTB Beds experience and their team. It is insane value for money when you consider the quality of accommodation, food and facilities. Everybody there was super friendly and full of useful local knowledge and positive energy. The whole holiday was very slick and well run and it helped us all to have an awesome time. I will certainly be coming back to MTB Beds for my next trip. Ben

Amazing trip in the Tweed Valley, 4 days of brilliant trails and expertly guided by Craig. Great location as well based from the Glentress Hotel.

Our Trans Liguria Mountain Bike Tour takes you on an epic journey across Italy and France riding some of the very best Singletrack and natural Mountain Bike terrain in the World. The Maritime Alps are part of the Southwestern Alps and descend down towards the Mediterranean sea. We start in Finale Ligure and head deep into the Ligurian hills, then West towards the French border and the Roya Valley riding trails that you can only dream up in your sleep!

A true multi stop enduro mountain bike tour with the spirit of adventure in the back country, amazing riding mixed with local culture, experienced guides and logistics taking care of your experience.

These ancient trails and valleys are truly spellbinding from peak to valley floor. You will be supported by our 4x4 Land Rover Defender vehicle we can go anywhere. We will stay in more remote B&B / Mountain Refuges throughout the trip, alongside 5-star riviera hotels!  This trip is truly bucket list stuff!

  • Unique accommodation  ranging from 5* hotels to Mountain refuges
  • Return airport transfers  from Nice with bike carriage.  *(Please enquire before booking as there may be an increased charge for certain pick ups.)
  • Amazing , locally sourced food and drink
  • Six full days of guiding  in the Maritime Alps from Italy to France
  • Local culture , knowledge and food delivered by local, professional guides

This tour is all about bringing the Atlas Ride Co vibe to the Backcountry. Every trail, every climb, every shuttle, every coffee, every lunch, every hotel, refuge and beer has been ridden and tested, by us and our partners at Backcountry Finale, no shortcuts. At each and every point we've thought, is there a better trail or a better spot to sip that post-ride beer, a better view to wake up to....

This trip has 7 days of action-packed riding from the day you arrive. There will be no let-up on the action as this tour packs in the best trails of Liguria and even dipping your toes into France and the Roya Valley. It's assisted by a Land Rover Defender, though we'll need you to put in the effort on occasion, we'll make sure it's worth it with mind-blowing trails, epic adventure and a cold beer to finish the day on.

DEPOSIT PAYMENT

To secure your place on the Trans Liguria Tour A 30% per person, booking deposit is required. Deposits are non refundable and the full balance is due 8 weeks before your arrival in Italy.

The Program

Day One - Arrival

We'll ask you to book flights that land before our shuttle leaves Nice airport, midday on the day of arrival. This is in order to get you up to Finale Ligure in good time and have your bikes built up. We'll do this at our base for the Atlas Ride Co Finale Ligure Uplift Adventure Tour, Villa Arcelli, with our workshop and mechanic onsite to fix up any last minute issues.

There will be shakedown uplift runs on the Saturday afternoon, using some classic Finale Ligure trails to check you and your bikes are in full working order, before a trail to your accommodation for the evening, where we'll be briefing you in detail of the riding and what to expect from the trip.

Day Two - Peaks

The first day of the tour proper takes you into the peaks behind Finale Ligure in the morning, for some of the regions best singletrack to get the stoke going on the first morning, before driving and hiking your way up to Monte Carmo, the highest peak in the region, for a late lunch over looking Liguria. From here you'll be able to see nearly every peak you'll tackle in the week while munching on a quality locally sourced picnic.

An absolute epic singletrack in the afternoon runs all the way down into the valley floor where you'll have a moment to take in a beer before shuttling to your accommodation for the evening, time allowing we'll be able to squeeze in another trail!

Day Three - Traverse

The morning brings a short climb, enough to wake you up and get ready for one of the most exciting days of the tour. You'll spend the morning descending and shuttling your way across the map to a final ridge line trail to end the day on, epic is not the word for how good this trail is...

Your accommodation for the next two nights is a beautiful B&B. We'll use this as a base for two days, to dip into France and back and give you a chance to decompress a little after riding all day.

This will be a point to wash some kit and have it dried before you head off again

Day Four - Border Hopping

On this day you'll don the beret's and take a long shuttle and short pedal in the morning to the Italian French border and the stunning peak of Marta and the Roya Valley. You'll spend most of the day in France riding the amazing terrain of the area, it all feels a little different to what you've been riding so far, with it's more open landscape and twisty turns and switchbacks.

We'll finish with a drive back to Italy and a few classic trails before a beer in the beautiful old town of Triora, with one more trail all that stands between you and a barbeque cooked by your host and guide Alessandro using meats sourced from his famous Osteria del Cantoniere at your B&B.

Day Five - Looper

You'll pack up the B&B in the morning and begin the journey back to Finale Ligure. The first peak you'll hit is the same one you descended from on your way over, but this time we'll be hiking up to the very top of the ridge we passed underneath. After the 40 minute hike we will head across a plateau, a little more pedalling up before a trail Alessandro regards as his favourite of the trip, be careful not to let him get too carried away down here! For the afternoon we will ride this valley area before taking the Defender to a camp site for a night under the stars.

Day Six - Shuttles

From the campsite in the morning we take a shuttle to a zone with some long, flowing single track to wind down the bike and body before the intense final day. The trails here are great fun, varying in length and is designed as a fun 'shuttle exploring day' as we continue to circle back to Finale Ligure, detouring into the amazing trails of Pietra Ligure in the afternoon will eventually take us back down to Bardinetto and some of the coolest single track of the week.

There is no rest day on this trip, it's go from the start. This day is built in as a complete day of riding, but the tempo and the trails are a little more laid back, flowing and fun.

Day Seven - Enduro

A special day, the last of the trip and it's possibly the most technically demanding. You'll be riding some of the best and most famous trails in the Ligurian region, many of them having been used in Enduro World Series Events over the last 8 years. A highlight will be the last trail before lunch, Bric Tampa.

Speaking of lunch, it will be at Alessandro, your guide's Osteria in the hills above Finale Ligure, in Melogno. For the last afternoon you'll face some of the most challenging terrain you'll have ridden all week, culminating in Men's DH, the infamous run that has ended all but one of the last 8 EWS seasons.

With it's finish mere metres from one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, you'll have your swim gear and a cold beer waiting for you, take your time to unwind before a short transfer (we'd like you to pedal to really finish the trip off right but the van will be there....) to your hotel over looking the Mediterranean for a relaxing last night on the coast.

Day Eight - Home

Wake up, pack, we're taking you home. Book your flight out of Nice airport anytime you like on the departure day and we'll drop you to the airport for high fives and hugs.

Or, stay for another week and shred Finale Ligure with Team Atlas Ride Co in our Finale Ligure Catered MTB Holiday  at Villa Arcelli!

ROOM ARRANGEMENTS & SINGLE SUPPLEMENT

The accommodation on the tour varies from Refuge's, Osteria's, hotels and 1 nights camping. The rooms will vary from twin share, to bunk room to triple rooms. There is a single supplement option the final nights stay, for an extra £75. The camping night is a two man tent, though we allocate 1 tent per person.

Ability Assessor

  • Advised bike - 150mm - 170mm aggressive enduro bike
  • Fitness - 4*
  • Skills and Technical ability - 4*
  • Riding Style - All Natural / Spirit of Adventure

See our Ability Assessor guide

This tour will involve work and effort on your end. You will have to pedal up some climbs, hike your bike up rocks and be able to operate a bike with skill when fatigue is setting in. We've assessed everything with Alessandro and tested it ourselves. We know there will be times when maximum effort is being applied, we want you to feel exhausted, spent, and above all stoked on that.

The tour runs on a schedule and though no man or woman will be left behind, if it is necessary for your safety and of that of the group, you may be asked to sit out trails or even entire days if you cannot handle the terrain or keep up with the pace of the group in a reasonable time. This is entirely up to the guides discretion, no refunds will be applicable. We want this to be the trip of a lifetime, so be honest with yourself and ask us any questions before booking on so we can deliver it for you.

FAQ - MUST READ

This tour is unique in our offering and warrants some extra research. Where we say something is obligatory, be it from ability, fitness or kit, we mean it.

Our goal is to make sure you have the best trip possible.

Please read the FAQ and guide below, in doing so you will help us make sure we can deliver it for you.

It is a condition of booking that you have adequate insurance that covers you in the event of an accident. The insurance should cover you for extreme riding conditions outside of a bike park, on a mountain bike tour in Italy and France. You must be fully covered in event of needing assistance from the mountain, including a helicopter in a worst case scenario. An E111 or similar National Health form or card from your country of residence is not enough to cover this. If you cannot present insurance documents to us before travel, we cannot allow you to ride on the tour.

We also strongly recommend you have insurance on your bike and belongings in the event of damage. Though theft is extremely unlikely given where we will be riding and staying!

This cover could also assist you in the event you could not ride due to injury or an resolvable bike issue such as a snapped frame.

We highly recommend Yellow Jersey and you will receive a discount code on booking.

  • How much pedalling will there be and how fit should I be?

You will be pedalling between 500m and 750m maximum each day. We use the defender to shuttle any road where it can be driven up and makes sense for it to drive up. The logistics of the mountains mean it is not always possible to use it. You should be comfortable riding long days, all day, with particular attention to your fatigue levels over the course of such a trip. We need you to safely navigate technical descents at the end of a long day when you have completed long ascents. You should be able to repeat this over the course of the week.

  • How much kit do i need to bring?

The Defender will have a roof rack installed that will be carrying all of your luggage. You should bring with you one kit bag, with several changes of riding kit and riding shoes, several changes of casual clothes, shoes and toiletries. Each accommodation will have towels. There will be a chance to wash your kit as we do stay two nights in one location.

You should also bring spares for your bike. We advise a full set of pivot bolts, a spare tyre, a spare derailleur hanger, a spare derailleur, 3 tubes and any bike specific spares you would normally

You will also need to bring a pack for riding in. It is essential to carry this with you on all trails. In this pack you will need to bring at a minimum;

  • A strong bike specific riding pack that can ride with all day, able to carry the following;
  • Hydration (unless you carry a water bottle)
  • Tyre levers
  • CO2 cannister x 2 and a valve to be able inflate them
  • Tubeless tyre noodles/dyno plug
  • Basic medical kit - Bandage, sling, plasters and antiseptic wipes.
  • A light rain jacket
  • Your phone, fully charged and able to accept calls
  • NB* Though we highly recommend and use bike carry systems such as OneUp EDC tools and straps for pumps, you still need to carry a pack for the other spares, jackets and kits. There will be some runs where a pack is not essential, Alessandro can advise on these occasions and you leave it in the Defender.
  • What can i do to my bike to make it ready for the trip?
  •   Get your bike setup tubeless. Easily the most important and time saving thing you can do. This should be done before arrival and setup with at least double down or equivalent tyres. DH casing would also be fine and advisable over EXO or similar. The terrain is natural, not ridden much and rocky. this type of riding means tracks have not always been cleared and debris or loose rock is often found in a trail.
  • Freshen up disposable parts. Tyres, brake pads, disc rotors and grips would be advisable to bring fresh and new. Add to this list shock bushes, the suspension itself, frame bearings and any other part part you have not had recently changed or serviced is worth being fixed and fitted before travel.
  • Change any parts you are not used to or get used to them before coming. This is not the trip to try that new telescopic fork, clipless pedals, shock wiz, a new brake system  or even a new bike unless you have extensively ridden it before hopping in the uplift van. The same applies to kit such as knee pads or gloves that may rub and cause discomfort if ridden all day.
  • Do you have a list of riding kit I should bring? *Essential
  • An open face helmet / helmet with detachable chin guard / enduro full face / DH full face*. Bring what you are comfortable wearing all day. Two helmets are not advised.
  • Proper bike specific riding shoes such as Five Ten*
  • Eye protection* goggles with a clear lens recommended
  • Riding Jersey x 6
  • Riding Shorts x 2
  • Jacket that can be ridden in the rain
  • Gloves as preferred
  • Elbow pads, spine protector as preferred but you should be aware it will be hot most days
  • Chamois if you use them
  • What will the accommodation be?

This will vary, from Trattoria's, a campsite and Rifugio's to 4 star hotels and and boutique B&B's, we have planned the trip to give you comfort when you need it, and to give you the sense of adventure and fun when you crave it. You will spend two nights in one location to avoid fatigue. There will be one night sleeping in a tent. There will be a hotel with a pool and balcony over looking the ocean. Each location has been tested, they all have the facilities we need to stay safe, clean and dry, with weather plans in place for all of them.

There is not a single occupancy option on most of the nights. However if you would like your own room, where we can we will. Please advise us and we will make the necessary arrangements. There will be an additional cost for this.

  • Is the trip fully catered?

Yes, breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided. The breakfast will be provided at accommodations or will be rustic style when camping. We will be in Italy, you will never not find a coffee in the morning. The lunches will vary from rustic sandwiches using amazing local produce eaten on mountain tops to Osteria's with fresh handmade pasta. In the evenings the food will be a highlight with restaurants and hosts showing you the best of their local regions specialities.

NB- Dietary requirements will be difficult to cater for on this tour. Please advise us of the specifics and we can advise.

Why book the Trans Liguria Tour with Atlas Ride Co

We've been working on this trip with your guide and host Alessandro Merlini of Back Country Finale for some years now. We initially made it a traditional point to point, starting in Finale Ligure and heading toward France as and end point. Each time we looked into the trail logistics and especially the best way to finish the tour, we kept coming back to the idea of finishing in by the beach in the town we love so much, so we figured, why not make it a loop and do exactly that!

Yes, you'll be starting the trip in beautiful Finale Ligure and finishing the tour on the stunning beach in Varigotti, after 6 days riding and countless stories to tell, the last trail finishes metres from the Mediterranean!

This tour is all about exploration, adventure, good times and a whole lot of stoke. There's going to be some hard work to get to where you're headed, but that's part of it. You'll see incredible views, ride amazing trails, eat beautiful food and share it with people you'll know for the rest of your life.

It's not a race to the end, it's about how you get to the finish.

Exploring the villages around Finale Ligure on the Western Ligurian Riviera

viaggio_italiano-logo-blu.png

Liguria is a region turned towards the sea, with an extensive coastline of more than 300 kilometres from the French border to Tuscany. The eastern part of the Ligurian Riviera, the Riviera di Levante, is the most famous with glamorous destinations known all over the world, such as Portofino and the Cinque Terre. But do not think that the western part of Liguria, the Riviera di Ponente, has nothing to offer! Beyond Sanremo, the most popular seaside resort west of Genoa, the Ligurian coast does hide well-preserved historic villages and a luxurious nature, well known by Italians - especially mountain bikers and hikers - but much less by international tourists. I spent a long weekend in Finale Ligure exploring one of the most beautiful parts of the Riviera di Ponente, from Borgio Verezzi to Noli. I had some of the best focaccia of my life and swam in one of the clearest water I've ever seen in the Mediterranean. What else could you ask for?

Finale Ligure

Finale Ligure, facciata di una chiesa

The peculiarity of the village Finale Ligure is that it is divided into four very distinctive parts: Finale Marina, Finale Pia, Finalborgo and Varigotti.

The busiest and most recent part, along the sea, is Finale Marina . This is where you will find most of the restaurants, bars, and beach clubs during the high season. The nicest part of Finale Marina is around its main square, the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II with the Triumphal Arc of Margherita di Spagna, as well as one of the best gelateria of Finale Ligure, Carlin.

East of Finale Marina, still on the coastline, is Finale Pia , which developed around the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria Pia during the Middle Ages - and the abbey is still active today!

Finale Ligure, arco d'ingresso a Finalborgo

But you will find the most charming part of Finale Ligure inland: Finalborgo , classified as one of the Borghi più Belli d'Italia (most beautiful villages in Italy). The atmosphere in this well-preserved medieval village, the oldest part of Finale Ligure, is totally different. Still surrounded by fortifications, Finalborgo is known today for its handicraft shops. A walk to the fort perched atop the village (Forte San Giovanni, built by the Spanish in the 17th century) will give you a panoramic view of the sea. The old castle (Castel Gavone) is further up but currently closed.

In the centre of Finalborgo, the old Cloisters of Santa Caterina are home to the Archeological Museum (there are a lot of prehistoric and archaeological sites around Finale Ligure) and to a wonderful cafe that employs disadvantaged people, the Nonunomeno Bistrot ai Chiostri. Walking in the small streets of Finalborgo, you will also see a lot of beautiful palaces dating back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance, as well as the Basilica di San Biagio, a baroque-style basilica from the 17th century. If it's opened, I also highly recommend visiting (for free!) the Teatro Aycardi, the old theatre of Finalborgo, which was the first theatre built in Liguria during the Napoleonic era.

Don't be surprised to see a lot of mountain bikes in Finalborgo: it is also a popular centre for mountain biking and other adventurous activities in the surrounding mountains (if you are interested in that kind of activity, check out the Finale Outdoor Base).

Villaggio di Varigotti, vista dal mare

Finally, more to the east, the small village of Varigotti is the last part of Finale Ligure and one of the most charming coastal villages I have seen in Liguria! This ancient fortified harbour, whose style is said to have been influenced by Saracens, has a series of quaint pastel-coloured houses along a beach with crystal-clear water.

After exploring the different parts of Finale Ligure, you have to (yes, have to) spend some time at the beach as you will find in Finale Ligure some of the cleanest beaches in Italy. In 2022, the Blue Flag was awarded to the beaches of Malpasso, Baia dei Saraceni, Finalmarina, Finalpia, Porto Beach, Varigotti and Castelletto San Donata. All are extremely good options for swimming or snorkelling. Even in October, the water was still at a perfect temperature. Some locals even told me that they sometimes swim until November!

Top 5 things not to miss

  • The medieval village of Finalborgo and its castle
  • The Archeological Museum of Finale Ligure and the other sites of the MUDIF (Museo Diffuso di Finale - Diffused Museum of Finale). Be sure to check out the opening times of those sites since they are only partially open.
  • The beach of Varigotti and its colourful houses (the perfect place for a swim)
  • A "focaccia crawl" in the best bakeries of the Finale Ligure area (don't miss Pomo d'Oro in Finalborgo, Da U Cicci and Pippo in Finalmarina)
  • Eat fresh fish and seafood, as Finale Ligure is also well-known for its fishing. There are some nice restaurants on the beach in Finale Marina.

Finale Ligure: Useful Information

Best time to visit : if you are interested in history and archaeology, it is best to visit Finale Ligure in the summer as the opening times of the sites are very limited off-season. Otherwise, spring and autumn have much nicer temperatures and still a lot of possibilities for hiking, biking or boating.

How to get there : Finale Ligure is very easy to reach by train: there are direct trains to Finale Marina from Genoa and Milano, and sometimes this is even quicker than the car! From Finale Marina, you can reach Finale Pia on foot and Finalborgo and Varigotti by bus (Line 40). If you still decide to come with your car, be aware that the centres of Finale Marina and Finalborgo only have a few free car park options.

Borgio Verezzi

Vista panoramica di Borgio Verezzi

Located only a few kilometres away from Finale Ligure, Borgio Verezzi is also an association of two very different villages: Borgio on the seaside and Verezzi on the mountainside. Legend has it that it was founded by Saracens pirates who fell in love with the area. Both parts have kept their historic centres, but while Borgio has now extended into a modern seaside resort, Verezzi has kept its old-fashioned medieval centre with its stone architecture. Well, its medieval centres, to be precise, as the few streets of the village are scattered around four little hamlets: Crosa, Piazza, Roccaro and Pioggio, all connected by "carruggi" (medieval streets) and "creuze" (old mule tracks).

The main square of Verezzi is Piazzetta Sant'Agostino, with its church from the 17th century (Chiesa Sant'Agostino) and a breathtaking view of the Riviera di Ponente, one of the main reasons why Verezzi has been classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" (Borghi più Belli d'Italia).

From the Verezzi hamlets, a quick walk will bring you to the top of Mount Orera. Good hiking options start from the church of San Martino. Easy-to-follow paths will allow you to discover historical sites such as the Fenicio mill (an old mill from the 11th century), the Castellaro (the archaeological site of an ancient settlement from the Iron Age), a Dolmen, a lot of caves and some rock carvings.

Grotte di Borgio Verezzi

Going back down to Borgio, you shouldn't miss a guided tour of the Borgio Verezzi Caves (Grotte di Borgio Verezzi), known as the "most colourful in Italy". For about 1 hour, you will tour several rooms with a great amount of stalactites, stalagmites and some small lakes. Visits are both in English and Italian.

  • The views from Verezzi Alta, the highest part of the village, and especially from the Piazza Sant’Agostino.
  • The picturesque churches of Verezzi
  • The hiking trails in Mount Orera: good options are the "Sentiero Natura" (Nature Path) and the "Sentiero Cultura" (Culture Path).
  • The caves of Borgio Verezzi, open daily for guided tours which need to be booked in advance.
  • Try local seafood: there are some restaurants with great views in the upper part of Verezzi.

Borgio Verezzi: Useful Information

Best time to visit : it is possible to visit Borgio Verezzi all year round, although temperatures in Spring and Autumn are best for hiking and biking. Verezzi is famous for its Theater Festival, happening every summer. Also happening in the summer (on August 13 and 14) is the small festival dedicated to the local speciality, "lumache alla verezzina" (snails Verezzi-style).

How to get there : Borgio Verezzi has a train station (on the Borgio side) and direct connections to Genoa. To reach the upper part of the village, Verrezzi, you can take the bus (Line 84) or walk (2 km mostly uphill).

Noli, piatto con spaghetti e vongole

East of Finale Ligure is Noli, a charming Medieval seaside village dominated by a 16th-century castle (Monte Ursino Castle) and also one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" (Borghi più Belli d'Italia). From the 12th to the 18th century, Noli was an independent Maritime Republic, thanks to its very active harbour and the protection of the Republic of Genoa.

The best way to discover Noli is to just stroll around the medieval caruggi of its medieval centre, surrounded by fortifications, one of the best preserved in Liguria. During your walk, you will be able to see the Municipality Palace (15th century), the San Pietro Cathedral (13th century), the San Paragorio Church (11th century - one of the best examples of Roman Art in Liguria and a National Monument), the Sant'Anna church (18th century), the Piazza Morando with its tall Canto Tower, the Piazza Dante with the Marina Tower, and a lot of medieval houses. There are just so many things to see in such a small village, but full of history.

There are good hiking trails west of Noli towards the Capo Noli. The most popular itinerary is the Sentiero del Pellegrino (the Pilgrim's Path), which connects Noli to Varigotti through a well-marked path with amazing views of the coast and the Saracens Bay. The path starts in Via strada vecchia in Noli. I also took a detour to the famous Grotta dei Falsari (Forgers' Cave), which is like an open window to the Mediterranean sea. Another trail is called "Dante's Path", in reference to the fact that Noli was mentioned by Dante in his Divine Comedy.

Noli also has some sandy beaches, which are not that common in the area. The main beach, facing the village, is big and has great clear water, as well as nice lidos. If you prefer wild creeks, you will find them around Capo Noli. But be careful as they are not always very easy to reach.

Finally, fishing is still important in Noli today and the village maintains the tradition of "pesca alla sciabica", a traditional way of fishing with nets. You will see the small Fishermen's boats on the Spiaggia dei Pescatori, where there is a small fish market every morning. Noli is also famous for its salted anchovies and its "cicciarello", a small fish eaten marinated and fried.

  • Walk around the well-preserved medieval centre of Noli.
  • Hike the Sentiero del Pellegrino from Varigotti to Noli, for the best coastal views.
  • Take a detour to the famous cave of Noli, Grotta dei Falsari (it's quite an adventure to get there, but it's worth it!).
  • Try the local fish (I recommend Bagni Letizia, directly on the beach and with decent prices).
  • In the summer, you can snorkel to the Nemo's Garden, the first underwater cultivation of terrestrial plants.

Noli: Useful Information

Best time to visit : you can enjoy Noli beaches from Spring to Autumn. Summer months are hotter and busier. The cicciarello, the fish specialty of Noli, is celebrated during the Sagra del Cicciarello, a small festival happening on the first or second Sunday of June. In September, Noli organizes another great festival for foodies, La Repubblica del gusto, a food and wine event showcasing local products.

How to get there : Noli does not have a train station. The easiest way to reach Noli by public transportation is to take a train to Finale Ligure Marina, then a bus (Line 40) to Noli. The bus also stops in Varigotti, if you are hiking the Sentiero del Pellegrino one-way.
