This excursion can be taken during the regular Perito Moreno Excursion. It is a boat trip that crosses Lake Rico, passing any icebergs that have calved off from the Perito Moreno glacier. Upon reaching the “Icebergs Channel” the boat will stop at a safe distance from the Perito Moreno glacier before continuing to navigate along and opposite its glacial wall. The boat used for this excursion is the Yagan with a capacity to carry up to 130 passengers. Clients will be taken to the embarkation point at the “Bajo de las Sombras” bay located about 6km before the Perito Moreno glacier viewing points. Navigations are at hourly departures between 10:00hrs to 16:00hrs.

It offers the possibility of observing with a totally different perspective the impressive walls of the Perito Moreno glacier and its continuous landslides on the waters of Lake Rico. You will be able to see icebergs that have come off the walls. Once in front of the wall, the boat stops for a few minutes to observe the landscape in more detail. Interesting for photographs and filming. Boarding takes place in the “Bajo de las Sombras”, approximately 6 km from the Glacier Viewpoint.

Nautical Safari to the Perito Moreno

In addition to walking along its footbridges (fully renovated today), one of the most traditional tours to see the Perito Moreno Glacier is to get on board a catamaran and slowly approach the great walls of ice across the waters of Lake Argentino. Not only do passengers catch a good glimpse of this wonder but they can also listen to the movements generated by the glacier, which generally end up in some calvingfall of ice blockslarge portions of walls. Popularly known as the nautical safari, this tour displays the great white mass and all its cracks and peaks with different hues in an extremely safe way. The company “Hielo y Aventura” offers several departures for this tour every day. Technically, the route goes across what is known as the Rico Arm of Lake Argentino.

The nautical safari, as well as other tours, wait for passengers to get on board at the bay called Bajo las Sombras (Under the Shadows). One of the most outstanding excursions available is hiking on the glacier with the aid of crampons to walk on the Perito Moreno itself, a memorable episode indeed. But the catamaran is an adventure with capital letters. At its own pace, slow but steady, the ice floes that float adrift on the surface of Lake Argentino are captured by the cameras coveting a souvenir from this tour. The catamaran gets as close as possible to the point where the glacier meets solid ground and the famous ice bridge is formed. Every now and then, this bridge collapses and this is known as “the rupture”. In fact, there is no such rupture; the glacier is constantly breaking off. As we approached Canal de los Témpanos (the Channel of the Ice Floes), the boat stopped in front of the glacier and started to tour along its front. Afterwards, the passengers who had hired the mini hiking excursion landed on the shore where the footbridges may be spotted. In the meantime, most passengers were on deck trying to capture this show starred by nature with photographic cameras and camcorders. Silence and expectation prevailed. Nobody wanted to miss some great calving event and the truth is that this tour guarantees astonishing scenes. Suitable for the entire family, the nautical safari is ideal to see one of the most beautiful sites on the planet from a very close distance: the Perito Moreno Glacier.

• To do the tour you should get to the Bajo las Sombras Port , located on Ruta 11 km 70.9, by your own means . We suggest setting off from El Calafate one hour in advance to be able to get on time. The road within the National Park is winding so, for your safety, we recommend that you comply with the speed limits.
• The tickets can be bought online or in the port before boarding. In the summer months, we recommend buying the tickets in advance. Not included: National Park’s entrance fee.

Nautical safari

The Rico arm is the setting of this nautical walk, sailing in front of the great mole of the Perito Moreno glacier, amid blocks of bluish icebergs, to the rhythm of the waters of Lake Argentino. The excursions offer beautiful panoramas of the glacier, its caverns, vaults and internal lagoons. The glacier´s energy Lake Argentino, along with the Viedma, is the repository of the great glaciers of the national park. The natural thing is to want to sail it to discover those masses of ice above the eternal snows of the mountain range. We know that they make up unique images in these latitudes of Argentina and we want to connect with the energy of the southernmost ices. In other words, to be of the privileged. The Perito Moreno glacier descends from the ice fields until it reaches the southern arm of Lake Argentino. There it is imposing with its 5 km wide and a height that exceeds 70 m.

The colosse is seen from the Canal de los Témpanos. Boats departing from the Port Under the Shadows sail the lake to reach close to this natural wonder, listen to its thundering soul and enjoy the unparalleled landscape of the Rico Arm, which receives the clear and cold waters of infinite streams that come down from the hills, in addition to its two main tributaries, the Mitre and Rico rivers. The boat stops for a few minutes, the expectation is great, the small ice blocks come off with deaf sounds that are amplified by the echo of the mountains. It is precisely where the glacier advance will last for a while, displacing the water that drains the arm and causing an elevation of about 30 m, until the water pressure and cracks cause a new great rupture, a unique spectacle. The Nautical Safari departs from The Port Under the Shadows, located at km 71 of route 11, distant an hour and a half from El Calafate. Visitors must arrive on their own to the port to embark on the comfortable Hielo & Aventura boats. It is a walk suitable for all ages and has an hour of sailing. It can be done all year round and it is recommended to pay attention to the equipment: comfortable and warm clothing, waterproof jacket and trousers, hat, gloves, comfortable footwear, sunglasses, sunscreen, food and drinks. In summer, it is ideal to dress in layers, "onion style".

Navigating to Perito Moreno’s south wall: Nautical Safari

There are two options in the area of the perito moreno glacier: to sail the lake rico, skirting the south wall, impossible to see from a different perspective or navigate the de los témpanos channel, approaching the front of the glacier..

First option: Bajo de las Sombras Pier, located 6 km from the glacier lookout.

Second option: Perito Moreno port, within walking distance from the footbridges (coastal trekking), or a 10-minute bus ride.

Departures are every hour from 11 am to 4 pm

Duration: 1 hour.

Recommendations:

This activity is suitable for all passengers. It may be combined with the excursion to the Glacier, although not with the Minitrekking, due to the fact that the latter includes navigation already. No excursion can beat this one in terms of photography and taping opportunities.
