Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship Profile and Photo Tour

norwegian cruise escape ship

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line launched its largest cruise ship, the 4,268-passenger Norwegian Escape in October 2015. This 164,00 ton, 20-deck cruise ship is filled with fun activities, entertainment, and dining and drinking establishments. It's a great ship for families and younger cruisers, although active seniors should enjoy it, too.

The Norwegian Escape is similar to her two sister ships, the Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway , but just enough different to put her into the "Breakaway Plus" class. The Norwegian Escape carries about 200 more guests than her two older sister ships and has a more expansive outdoor activity area, complete with Ropes Course and large AquaPark.

The Norwegian Escape sails from her home port of Miami year-round on 6- to 14-day cruises to the Bahamas and the eastern and/or western Caribbean. Sailing to these warm weather destinations fits perfectly with her large amount of outdoor activity space, outdoor dining venues, and outdoor bars.

This article is a profile of the Norwegian Escape, with information on the

  • dining and cuisine,
  • bars and lounges,
  • outdoor deck areas,
  • entertainment, and
  • kid's areas.

Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship Dining and Cuisine

With a large resort-style ship, cruise travelers expect a lot of different places to dine, and the Norwegian Escape delivers, with 28 dining options. Some of these are luxurious and gourmet, others are casual and takeaway. Although several of the venues are complimentary, many are either a fixed surcharge or a la carte.

The Norwegian Escape has three main complimentary dining rooms -  Manhattan Room , Taste , and Savor. These are contemporary and elegant, with diverse menus.

Iron Chef Jose Garces designed two great new dining options for the cruise ship. The first is Bayamo, a Latin seafood restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining areas. I had dinner there and loved the tuna with watermelon appetizer, shrimp with garlic sauce and charred tomato, and ice cream/sorbet sampler for dessert. Chef Garces' other restaurant is the casual Pincho Tapas Bar, where patrons sit at the bar and watch their tapas being prepared.

The third exciting new restaurant on the Norwegian Escape is the Food Republic, an upscale food emporium from the Pubbelly Restaurant Group. The Food Republic features small plates from around the world, perfect for sharing or sampling an around the world menu.

Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship Bars and Lounges

The Norwegian Escape has 21 bars and lounges. Some of these are great for a casual drink, others provide more elegant surroundings. I especially loved the District Brew House, a new partnership for Norwegian with the Wynwood Brewing Company of Miami. This brewhouse comes with a keg room, 24 draft beers on tap, and more than 50 different bottled beers. It also has some delicious snacks to go along with the beer, and the decor includes one of those old photo booths, where you can take your own instant photo selfie and add it to the pinboard in the bar.

Another great bar is The Cellars, a Michael Mondavi Family Wine Bar. This wine bar is fun for enjoying a glass of wine and some snacks but is also a great place for wine education classes and tastings.

The ship has many more bars and lounges, and many have both indoor at outdoor seating, taking full advantage of the Norwegian Escape's Caribbean itineraries.

Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship Cabins

The Norwegian Escape cruise ship has 2,175 staterooms, and there's something in every price range.

One thing common on the carpet in the cabin passageways of all Norwegian ships is that the "fish face forward", which makes finding your cabin much easier. The carpet in the hallways features small fish all swimming in the same direction--forward. So, if you know the location of your cabin (forward or aft), you can always walk the correct direction. On a large ship, it's sometimes easy to get lost on the cabin decks, and this feature can save a lot of steps.

The large suites are in The Haven , and the most prevalent standard staterooms are the balcony cabins. The Norwegian Escape also has nice oceanview cabins with a large window overlooking the sea, and inside cabins for the budget-conscious cruiser.

Solo travelers will especially enjoy the Studio Cabin complex, which features 82 tiny cabins designed for one person each. These cabins do not have a single supplement. The complex has its own Studio Lounge for the solo travelers, which is a great gathering place.

The Haven on the Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship

The Haven is the Norwegian Escape's private enclave for guests staying in 95 of the suite accommodations on the cruise ship. The Haven guests share a huge courtyard with pool, bar, and private restaurant. They also have many other benefits, including the services of a concierge, priority embarkation and debarkation, and priority tender boarding.

Norwegian Escape Interiors

The interior common areas of the Norwegian Escape cruise ship are contemporary and well-designed for the large ship. The layout is similar to the Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway.

The Mandara Spa , Salon, and Fitness Center is large and features a huge gym, beauty salon, and many body treatment rooms. The thermal relaxation area shown in the photo above is part of the thermal suite, which also features a sauna, steam rooms, and snow room.

Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship Outdoors

The Norwegian Escape sails to the warm Caribbean year-round from Miami so it's not surprising that the large, resort-style cruise ship has impressive outdoor decks that make guests want to play or relax out in the sunshine.

The outdoor decks have areas for adults and kids of all ages. Spice H2O is the adult relaxation, dance, and movie area. The three-story Ropes Course is a challenge for kids of all ages, as is the Aqua Park, with its five exhilarating water slides.

Younger children haven't been forgotten on the Norwegian Escape. They have their own Kid's Aqua Park with numerous ways to get wet.

Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship Entertainment

The entertainment on the Norwegian Escape is first-rate. The cruise ship has two Tony Award-winning musicals in the Escape Theater, which is the largest entertainment venue on the ship.

  • The choreography of "After Midnight" is exceptional, and the costumes are amazing. The entertainers take the audience back to Harlem's Cotton Club. Along with the great singing, dancing, and costumes, an onstage jazz band brings in the big band sound of Duke Ellington.
  • "Million Dollar Quartet" also had a run on Broadway. Guests on the Norwegian Escape will certainly recognize the quartet--Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. The singers/actors do a great job of capturing the music and the style of these famous icons. A recreation of their December 1956 jam session includes classic rock and roll that will be loved by anyone who loved music from this memorable era.

The Supper Club venue features dinner and a show entitled, "For the Record: The Brat Pack Live at the Supper Club". This entertaining cabaret show looks back at the soundtracks of many of John Hughes' movies from the 1980's like Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club . The show is so much fun that I hardly knew what I was eating!

Headliners Comedy Club has been a popular lounge on other Norwegian Cruise Line ships, and past cruisers are happy to find this venue on the Norwegian Escape.

Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship Kid's Areas

The Norwegian Escape cruise ship has three separate areas for children:

  • Guppies -- ages 6 months to 3 years Norwegian Escape is the first ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet to offer childcare services for children ages 6 months to 3 years. The Guppies Nursery has a playtime area with age-appropriate activities and a separate place for napping.
  • Splash Academy -- ages 3 years old through 12 years old Splash Academy is Norwegian Cruise Line's youth program and has spaces and age-appropriate activities for three different age groups --Turtles: 3 – 5-year-olds Dolphins: 10 – 12 years old (6 – 12-year-olds in low season) Seals 6 – 9-year-olds In addition to the age-appropriate activities, Splash Academy features a Nickelodeon-themed night. Kids can also enjoy an expanded Circus program and participate in an environmental interactive program. Of course, the Splash Academy has video games, a place to dance, and arts and crafts.
  • Entourage -- ages 13 through 17 years old Teens have their own space near the ship's video arcade with trendy lounge furniture and a central gaming station. The area also has teen favorites like foosball and air hockey. At night, Entourage transforms into a teen-only nightclub.

Is a Thermal Spa Pass Worth it on a Cruise Ship?

Is a Thermal Spa Pass Worth it on a Cruise Ship

Sharing is caring!

If you’re planning a cruise vacation, you may wonder whether a thermal spa pass is worth the price.

Although a spa pass comes at an additional cost, this popular cruise add-on certainly has benefits. Whether you’re a new or experienced cruiser, it’s worth understanding the benefits of a thermal spa pass before you decide whether or not to book it on your next cruise.

On a recent cruise onboard Norwegian Joy, I tried out the thermal spa pass for the first time.

In this post, I share what you can expect when you purchase a spa pass and my thoughts on whether a thermal spa pass is worth it.

What is a Thermal Spa on a Cruise Ship?

A thermal spa, otherwise referred to as a thermal suite on specific cruise lines is an exclusive pay-to enter area where cruise passengers can enjoy steam rooms, saunas, heated loungers, thalassotherapy pools, hot tubs and more. This popular cruise add-on is ideal for guests who want to relax and rejuvenate throughout their cruise vacation.

Which Cruise Lines Have Thermal Spas?

Most major cruise lines equip their fleet with thermal spas and suites, popular cruise add-ons. Many cruise passengers enjoy staying in the thermal spa to de-stress, relax, and recharge.

Here’s a list of the cruise lines that offer thermal spa and thermal suite passes:

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Celebrity Cruise
  • Virgin Voyages
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Holland America Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Viking Cruises

How Much Does a Thermal Spa Pass Cost?

The cost of a thermal spa pass can vary depending on the cruise line. Furthermore, certain cruise lines offer day passes, or passes for the duration of the cruise vacation.

It’s important to note that prices are subject to change and can vary due to popular itineraries.

Here are the prices for a spa pass on each cruise line:

  • Carnival Cruise Line: Day pass $30 / $129 (7 days)
  • Norwegian Cruise Line: Day pass $79 / $339 (7 days)
  • Virgin Voyages: Day pass $49 (port days) / $69 (sea days) / $199 (7 days)
  • Celebrity Cruises: Day pass $79 / $219 (7 days)
  • Royal Caribbean: Day pass $69 / $219 (7 days)
  • Disney Cruises: Day pass $39 / $189 (7 days)
  • Holland America Line: Day pass $49 / $199 (7 days)
  • MSC Cruises: Day pass $80 / $195 (7 days)
  • Princess Cruises: Day pass $75 / 149 (7 days)
  • Viking Cruises: Included in cruise fare

5 Things I really Liked About the Thermal Spa

norwegian cruise escape ship

1. Quiet Area to Relax

The thermal spa is a quiet retreat that provides a relaxing escape from the rest of the cruise ship. Hanging out on the lido deck and around the promenade can be busy. The thermal spa is a relaxing and quiet area, ideal for cruise passengers looking to unwind.

One of the benefits of having a thermal suite pass is that you’ll have access to exclusive hot tubs and thalassotherapy pools (on select cruise lines) reserved for thermal spa guests. Typically, these hot tubs and pools are in a spa-like setting, which makes them extra relaxing.

When I recently had the thermal spa pass, I enjoyed going from the busy pool deck to relaxing in the spa. This was a great escape from the pool-side music, activities, and entertainment.

2. Perfect For Colder Itineraries

The thermal suite pass is perfect for colder itineraries like Alaska, Canada, New England, and even transatlantic crossings. Due to the colder weather, cruise passengers will spend much more time in the spa.

Another thing to consider is that it may not be warm enough to enjoy the pool deck. So, having a private relaxing area is worth the price of those colder itineraries.

Furthermore, the spa often offers amazing scenic views, so you can take in the landscape while relaxing in the gorgeous spa area.

Although I had the spa pass on a recent Bermuda cruise, I could only imagine how magical of an experience glacier viewing in Alaska would be from the spa.

3. Limited Capacity

NCL Spa Showers

Due to the thermal suite’s limited capacity, cruise passengers can enjoy a quiet spa area. This means there will be enough heated loungers, space in the saunas and steam rooms, and a thalassotherapy pool and hot tub for each thermal spa guest.

On my recent cruise, I really enjoyed the limited capacity. After a few days, I would see the same familiar faces, and I got to know some of the other thermal spa guests, which was nice.

Moreover, I never had to worry about finding a heated lounger or day bed to relax and rest in.

4. Variety of Heated Loungers, Day Beds and More

The thermal spa has a wide variety of heated loungers, day beds, and more!

A unique feature in the spa onboard the Norwegian Joy was the four-sensation loungers. These pod-like pods are warm and comfortable and give off a relaxing aroma.

Throughout my cruise vacation, I enjoyed sitting in the steam room for 15 minutes, then heading over to a day bed for a 30-minute nap. This was a great way to enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean and relax.

Many cruise passengers enjoy using the heated tile loungers. These loungers relax your muscles and improve circulation.

5. Saunas, Steam Rooms & Cold Plunges

Sauna NCL

If you’re a fan of saunas, steam rooms, and cold plunges, then you’ll love the thermal spa onboard a cruise ship. Although every cruise has a different thermal suite, saunas and steam rooms are standard.

On newer cruise ships, many thermal spas feature cold plunges, which have many health benefits!

One of my favorite things about having the thermal spa pass was switching between the steam room and the cold plunge. This process helped with muscle recovery, reduced inflammation, and accelerated my metabolism.

3 Things I Didn’t Like About the Thermal Spa

1. may not use it much on a warmer sailing.

On warmer sailings, the thermal spa may not be used much, especially if you enjoy relaxing on the pool deck. Some cruisers purchase the thermal suite pass and do not use it much during their Caribbean cruise.

Before purchasing the spa pass, you may want to consider how often you will use it. During a warmer itinerary, you may relax outdoors instead of inside the thermal spa.

In my experience, the thermal spa provided a great break from the hot sun in Bermuda. Although I would spend time under the sun, I always went to the thermal spa to relax indoors towards the end of the day.

2. Spa Tours on First Day

One downside to purchasing a thermal spa pass for the duration of your cruise vacation is that there will be spa tours on embarkation day. So, you can try to relax in a sauna, and cruise passengers will tour the spa facilities.

Although this didn’t bother me too much, I did notice it, and it made it hard to relax on the first day of my cruise.

On the bright side, this only lasts one day, so you won’t have to worry about this minor inconvenience for the rest of your cruise vacation.

3. Price Point

If you’re cruising on a budget, you may find it hard to rationalize spending the extra money on a spa pass. The reality is that spa passes can cost between $150 to over $300, so you’ll want to ensure it’s worth the price.

Although many cruisers enjoy the thermal spa pass, other cruise passengers can’t rationalize spending the extra money. Before purchasing a thermal suite pass, it’s good to see whether or not you’ll find value in paying for it.

Ice Room NCL

Is a Thermal Spa Pass Worth It?

A thermal spa pass is worth the price if you enjoy steam rooms, saunas, thalassotherapy pools, private hot tubs, and tiled heated loungers. To make the most out of the spa pass, you must enjoy spending an hour or two there every day. This cruise add-on is ideal for those cruise passengers who are looking to relax and rejuvenate while they’re on vacation.

I really enjoyed having a thermal spa pass. It was a great place to relax, and I ended up enjoying the steam room and cold tub more than I originally expected.

Every time I entered the spa, it provided me with a nice break from the fun cruise ship atmosphere. The environment was very calming and clean, and the other spa guests were very kind.

Overall, the spa pass was very worth it, and I would definitely consider booking it in the future.

Norwegian's Bermuda Cruises in 2025

In 2025, you can sail to the picturesque island of Bermuda from Boston or New York . Regardless of where you depart, you'll arrive at Bermuda's Royal Naval Dockyard. Located on the island's West End, the dockyard offers a breathtaking view of the harbor and the sparkling waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

At the Royal Naval Dockyard , you can explore charming craft shops and local markets, picking up some souvenirs for your loved ones who weren't lucky enough to join you on your cruise vacation. The dockyard, built in the 19th century and later restored to its former splendor, also houses the National Museum. Perfect for history buffs, the museum explores the island's past and offers insights into its culture and heritage.

You'll also have the opportunity to leave the dockyard and take advantage of all the island has to offer. Whether you want to dive into the ocean waters, relax on the pink sand beaches, or get lost in the Bermuda Triangle, Norwegian offers the perfect shore excursion for you. Here are just a few of the experiences you can have on this slice of island paradise.

Sunken plane remains in Bermuda

Shipwreck and Coral Reef Snorkel Combo

You'll have access to a variety of snorkeling excursions, but we suggest this unique shipwreck and coral reef snorkeling combo . As part of this experience, you'll set sail on a snorkel boat to visit the Constellation, a cargo ship that sank off the coast of Bermuda during World War II. You'll see the remains of the Constellation from the boat before getting in the water to snorkel, giving you an up-close view of the wreck. Later, you'll travel to a second location to snorkel in a secluded area, where you'll enjoy the underwater sights of the vibrant coral reef.

Bermuda Triangle Cruise

Come on, you're at least a little curious about the Bermuda Triangle, aren't you? According to urban legend, this ocean region has been the site of numerous mysterious disappearances. Whether or not you believe the myth, a cruise to the Bermuda Triangle will be an event to remember. On this evening cruise, you'll experience the darkness of the ocean on a glass-bottomed boat. As you sail beneath the twinkling stars, crew members will explain the notoriety of the Bermuda Triangle and give you a unique perspective on the coral and fish that call this part of the ocean home.

Prefer to spend your time on the green instead? There are plenty of idyllic golf courses in Bermuda for you to enjoy. The Belmont Hills Golf Course offers stunning views of Hamilton Harbour and the Great Sound. The course has over 6,100 yards of bunkers, various water hazards, and narrow fairways, making it a fun, challenging course for even the most experienced golfers.

Crystal Caves

Did you know there are caves on the island? This family-friendly excursion will take you to Bermuda's northernmost point. Here, you'll find the Crystal Caves, which were discovered in 1907 by a teenager who lost a cricket ball in the caverns. On this excursion, you'll take a tour of the stunning caves, walking on a bridge over a clear lake surrounded by stalactites.

After your time at the caves, you'll travel to a nature reserve on another part of the island. You'll get some downtime to visit one of six beaches in the area. Lounge on the beach or take a dip in the ocean as the sun shines brightly overhead.

Sunset Rum Cruise

You can't leave Bermuda without trying a rum swizzle, widely known as the country's national drink. What better way to enjoy this delicious beverage than on a sunset cruise? On your rum cruise , you'll sail to the Great Sound, where you can view some island homes and learn more about the island's history. A rum expert — appropriately known as a rumologist — will guide the tour, allowing you to try different local rums. If you like what you taste, you can purchase some bottles to take home as gifts or keep for yourself.

Electric bike by the water

If you want a unique experience while docked in Bermuda, plan to tour the island on an electric bike. You won't have to worry about pedaling up hills since the bike gives you a boost, allowing you to relax and enjoy the island sights. Starting on the island's Eastern End, you'll travel along different trails, exploring parts of the island many tourists never see. From seaside landscapes to shoreline beaches, the views on this e-bike tour will give you a new appreciation of this incredible island.

Island Drive

Do you have FOMO (fear of missing out)? If so, the Bermuda Island Drive tour is perfect for you. After docking, you'll depart the cruise ship and board a comfortable bus for a full tour of the island. As part of the drive, you'll see the island's Horseshoe Bay, famous for its charming pink sand beaches. Other notable highlights on this tour include the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, Somerset Bridge, and the town of St. George's.
