Everything to Know About the S Club 7 Reunion (From Someone Who Wasn’t Born Yet When They Debuted)

Long before BTS and One Direction, one of the biggest pop bands in the world was a 7-piece group from the UK whose sole purpose was to get the party started. S Club 7 formed in 1998 and went on to achieve huge success, in part due to a hit TV show, quintessential Y2K outfits , and catchy pop anthems, which have gone on to become karaoke staples to this day.

Formed by Simon Fuller, the man behind The Spice Girls , S Club 7 were together for nearly 15 years before calling it quits, spawning four studio albums and a string of hits in that time. Now, Tina, Paul, Hannah, Jon, Rachel, Bradley and Jo are “bringing it all back” with a much-hyped comeback for 2023.

Some members of the Rolling Stone staff were incredibly excited by the news, though others weren’t as aware of S Club 7’s impact since they weren’t around when the group first made waves.

TIM CHAN : S Club 7 announced a comeback tour this week! I’m so excited!

TOMAS MIER : I have no idea who that is.

TC: What? They were like a huge pop group that had a mix of guys and girls in it, so they stood out compared to all the boy bands and girl groups from that era.

TM : So they’re like Now United ?

TC : Actually that’s a great comparison since both groups were started by Simon Fuller, the man who also managed The Spice Girls. I guess Now United was his way of trying to replicate S Club 7’s success.

TM : How do you know S Club 7?

TC : I grew up listening to them. They debuted in 1998 and were all over the radio.

TM : I wasn’t even born yet.

TC : …

TM : This sounds like music from Mervyn’s.

TC : No idea who he is.

TM : It’s a defunct department store.

It's a dream come true for S Club 7 fans — they're reuniting for a tour!

S Club 7

One of the hottest bands of the early 2000s is reuniting to prove that "there ain’t no party like an S Club party."

S Club 7, a British pop band that rose to fame with hits like “Bring It All Back,” “Never Had a Dream Come True” and “S Club Party,” just announced that they're hitting the road next fall for a much-anticipated reunion tour.

Twenty-five years after the band first formed, they stopped by the BBC's "The One Show" on Feb. 13 to share the exciting news.

"We are very excited to say that we are going back out on tour in October," band member Rachel Stevens said. "We’re just so excited to get back out there and sing our hearts out and perform. We're celebrating 25 years, which is just crazy."

When asked what fans can expect from the tour, band member Bradley McIntosh teased a few details.

"Obviously, we’re bringing the nostalgia. Obviously we're bringing the late '90s, early (2000s), so it's a lot of fun. It's very positive, our music, very positive," he said. "And I think in today's times you need a bit of positive, you need a bit of picking up so that's what we're here to do."

The news is likely a dream come true for S Club 7 fans, but there's one caveat: the tour only has European dates. The band will perform 11 shows across the continent, stopping in cities like Liverpool, Dublin, Glasgow, London and Birmingham.

Fans can sign up for the presale on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. GMT and tickets open up to the general public on Friday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. GMT.

In addition to Stevens and McIntosh, the other five members of S Club 7 — Tina Barrett, Paul Cattermole, Jon Lee, Jo O’Meara and Hannah Spearritt — are also on board for the reunion.

Fans of the band are naturally psyched for the news and flooded the comments section of the Instagram announcement.

"My 10 year old self is SCREAMING!!!!!" one wrote. Another commented, "Omg!!! My heart!!!! I listen to y’all every day in NYC ♥️♥️♥️ I gotta get out there!!"

Still, they were a bit disappointed to hear that the band doesn't have any North American dates on their tour.

"U.S. American fans crying ourselves to sleep tonight," one said. Another chimed in, writing, "I hope y’all come to America! I got so excited when the news was announced."

S Club 7 initially teased the announcement over the weekend with their very first Instagram post, and many fans were hopeful that they were going back on tour or releasing new music.

"I’m screaming. I’ve been waiting 20 years for this. S Club is about to take over the world of Pop," one wrote.

Per the BBC , this tour marks the first time the band will hit the road together since 2015.

As avid fans will recall, S Club 7 had their own BBC TV series ("Miami 7") and several hit albums. The band went their separate ways in 2003, according to the BBC , but reunited for a charity performance in 2014. In 2015, they released new music and went on tour once again.

Here's What the Members of 2000's English Pop Group S Club 7 Are up to Now

Pretty Honore - Author

Updated April 7 2023, 2:25 p.m. ET

The '90s and the 2000s were truly a time to be alive. Gen Z ’ers who don’t believe us can just ask the members of British pop ensemble S Club 7 .

Back in February 2023, news broke that the group is getting back together for a reunion tour. While our millennial hearts were all in on nostalgia hype, the state of the reunion may have shifted drastically in the weeks since the announcement. What are the members of S Club 7 up to now?

There’s going to be an S Club 7 reunion tour — we’re not crying, you are.

In February 2023, two decades after the group disbanded, S Club 7 is giving millennials the reunion tour for their 25th anniversary. The first show on the tour kicks off on Oct. 13 at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, with the last show taking place on Oct. 28 in London.

Things have changed quite a bit for the seven pop singers since they first emerged on the scene and tragedy even struck shortly after the anniversary announcement. Read on to see how everyone is doing.

Tina Barrett

At age 46, Tina Barrett is proof that the fountain of youth actually exists. Although S Club 7 split up, she never stepped out of the spotlight.

She went on to join Jo O’Meara, Paul Cattermole, and Bradley McIntosh’s S Club spinoff group, S Club 3 (later known as the S Club Allstars), and released several solo singles in the years that followed.

Tina was previously romantically linked to Paul Cashmore , with whom she welcomed her first son in 2016. Tina and Paul ultimately split in 2021. Their son, Roman, is six years old as of writing.

Rachel Stevens

In 2003, when S Club 7 went their separate ways, Rachel Stevens dropped her debut solo album — Funky Dory — which was later certified gold. The following year, after the release of her very successful second studio album, she took a break from the music biz.

In 2008, Rachel got into reality television. She appeared on the U.K.’s Strictly Come Dancing , where she and her Italian pro dance partner, Vincent Simone, took home second place. She’s also appeared on The X Factor and The Voice of Ireland .

Today, she shares two children — Amelia and Minnie Blossom — with her husband, Alex Bourne. The two have been married since 2009.

Hannah Spearritt

Long before Hannah Spearrit joined S Club 7, she was a thespian. Following her departure from the group, she went back to her roots. In 2004, she secured roles in Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London and the Seed of Chucky .

Later, she booked the main role in BBC’s since-canceled sitcom Blessed and played Abby Maitland in ITV’s Primeval from 2007 until the show went off-air in 2011. Hannah also had recurring roles in the BBC series Casualty and EastEnders.

She and her long-term boyfriend, Adam Thomas, have two daughters — Tea and Tora.

When S Club 7 disbanded, Jon Lee tok his talents to the theatre. He’s had a longstanding career on stage, starring in productions like Les Misérables , Peter Pan , and Jersey Boys .

Years after his exit from S Club 7, Jon came out in an interview with Gay Times ( per the Advocate ) . In 2018, he appeared on the British dating series Dinner Date , however, there’s no evidence that he’s seeing anyone special these days.

Paul Cattermole

While many of his ex-costars went on to pursue a career in entertainment, Paul Cattermole took a different path. After leaving S Club 7, he tried reuniting with his nu metal band from school before disbanding. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that Paul realized found another calling as a psychic medium.

Though he was initially part of the 2023 reunion tour, Paul passed away on April 6 at the age of 46.

His bandmates are " truly devastated " at his loss.

Bradley McIntosh

Brandon McIntosh

When viewers first met Bradley McIntosh , he was a teenage heartthrob. Two decades later, not much has changed. Today, he’s married to his longtime sweetheart, Megan Firth. They welcomed their son, Kairo, in 2017.

Jo O'Meara

Along with her contributions to S Club, Jo also pursued a solo career in entertainment. She released her debut album Relentless , which peaked at 48 on the U.K.’s album charts, in October 2005. Though, her 2021 album With Love wasn’t as well-received.

Jo later did a stint on the BBC reality series Just the Two of Us and Celebrity Big Brother . Jo’s teenage son, Lenny, was fathered by her ex, Bill Slate.

Formed in 1998 by pop svengali Simon Fuller, S Club 7 went on to become one of the U.K.’s biggest pop bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Along the way, the seven-strong act landed four U.K. No. 1 singles (“Bring It All Back,” “Never Had A Dream Come True,” “Don’t Stop Movin’” and “Have You Ever”) and a No. 1 album with 2000’s 7 .

Fans will remember that they also starred on the family sitcom  Miami 7/S Club 7 in Miami,  about seven friends who relocate to Miami in search of fame, playing exaggerated versions of their own personalities. (The show aired on ABC Family in the United States.)

The group disbanded in 2003, with Stevens going on to enjoy a high-profile pop career in her homeland, bagging five top 10 singles, including No. 2s for “Sweet Dreams My LA Ex” (2003) and “Some Girls” (2004).

Then, in 2014 , the singers joined forces once more to perform for the BBC Children In Need appeal. The reunion gathered pace when a U.K. tour was booked the following year.

More on the 2023 tour will be revealed at a press conference Tuesday morning (Feb. 14), streamed live on Instagram and YouTube.

S Club 7 reunite on TV to announce 25th anniversary tour

Late ’90s teen pop act S Club 7 are reuniting for a new tour to celebrate the group’s 25th anniversary.

S Club made the announcement on British chat show The One Show today, marking the first time all seven members have been seen in public together since their last reunion tour eight years ago.

A reunited S Club 7 today.

The group – who made it big with hits like Bring It All Back , Don’t Stop Moving and S Club Party – will embark on a UK arena tour in October.

All members of the group are now in their 40s, with the eldest, Tina Barrett, due to turn 47 a month before the tour kicks off.

And fans were shocked by Tina’s appearance in particular - noting that the group’s eldest member barely seems to have aged a day in over 20 years.

While this new reunion is billed as a celebration of S Club’s 25th anniversary, they’re a little early – they didn’t actually release debut single Bring It All Back until June 1999.

From there, the group became a cheesy pop success story, helmed by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller. There were four studio albums, a TV series and even a movie before S Club split in 2003.

During that time they scored an unbroken run of 11 top five UK singles.

But in recent years, members of the band have been open about their fading fortunes, and how little money they were left with, despite the group’s massive success.

One member, Hannah Spearritt, recently revealed she and her family were left homeless this past Christmas, struggling to make ends meet.

S Club 7’s reunion tour poster uses a photo of the group from back in 1999.

“We were not on a good wage compared to the money being made,” she told The Sun of her time in the group.

“People think we must all be millionaires but sadly it’s just not true. It was what it was and we enjoyed ourselves at the time.”

She also confessed she was reluctant to sign on the dotted line for the S Club reunion until she could negotiate a good deal for herself, saying: “At the moment it’s S Club 6.”

Hannah’s bandmate – and former boyfriend – Paul Cattermole opened up about what life was like in the band in a 2019 interview, claiming their relationship had been arranged by the group’s management.

And S Club’s lead singer Jo O’Meara recently endured months of gruelling back surgeries , saying last month that she feels lucky she’s able to walk at all.

S Club’s last reunion, in 2015, was simply for a quick, 12-date UK tour. It will be interesting to see whether they’ll stick around for longer this time around, and parlay their reunion into the sort of second life for the group that their contemporaries like Steps and the Sugababes have managed to pull off in recent years.

Oasis fans have been left frustrated after seeing tickets going for $12,000 just hours after the band’s first pre-sale.

British singer Morrissey has revealed that The Smiths came close to reuniting for a tour until one thing got in the way.

Taylor Swift is set to wrap her blockbuster Eras Tour in December, and she appears to have answered questions about what she could possibly achieve next.

S club 7 reunited tour setlist 2023: what songs can we expect.

While we obviously don’t know details of the group’s upcoming tour setlist, we’re certain you can expect all the hits (and a few surprises). Let’s remind ourselves of S Club’s Bring It All Back 2015 tour setlist:

Bring The House Down

S club party, you’re my number one, love ain’t gonna wait for you, two in a million, stronger (tina barrett solo), reach (acoustic) (paul cattermole solo), straight up (paul abdul cover) (hannah spearritt solo), hello friend (jon lee and jo o’meara duet), have you ever, good times/friday night/dance dance dance/do it ‘till we drop/who do you think you are (bradley mcintosh dj set), some girls/sweet dreams my la ex (rachel stevens solo), viva la fiesta, bring it all back, uptown funk (mark ronson and bruno mars cover), say goodbye, never had a dream come true, don’t stop movin’, watch our exclusive chat with s club 7’s jo, tina and rachel below:.

Will S Club 7 release new music in 2023?

Asked if we can expect some new S Club tunes on the BRITs red carpet, Jo said: "Wait till Monday!"

Then, at the group's press conference hosted by BBC Radio 2's Scott Mills, Jon said: "It's something we have spoken about and something we'd all definitely be up for, but at the moment we're just seeing how the tour goes."

Will S Club Juniors be going on tour with S Club 7 as support act?

Eagle-eyed fans have spotted that the official S Club 7 Instagram account follows only Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment, the band members and S Club Juniors ’ Frankie Bridge, Rochelle Humes, Aaron Renfree, Calvin Goldspink, Jay Perry, Hannah Richings, Stacey Franks and Daisy Shelvey.

Why’s that, then?

Speaking to us on the BRITs red carpet, the group said: “We’re all S Clubbers, aren’t we? You’ve got to have the S!”

Interesting...

At the group's press conference, Jo addressed speculation saying: "We're [keeping it] open. It'd be lovely to get somebody who's not done it before; somebody new and fresh. It'd be nice to open up a career to somebody else, but you never know."

When did S Club 7 last reunite?

In November 2014, the group reformed to announce a twelve-date 2015 UK arena. The band also reissued their Best: The Greatest Hits of S Club 7 collection with a previously-unreleased fan favourite track, Rain.

Everyone knows there ain’t no party like an S Club party, which is why all those who have Never Had A Dream Come True are buzzing to hear the gang are embarking on an epic reunion tour across the UK in 2023 .

And when we say the gang, we mean the whole gang will be taking to the stage for the occasion to mark the pop legends’ 25th anniversary.

For those with a short memory, that’s members Rachel Stevens, Bradley McIntosh, Hannah Spearritt , Jo O’Meara , Jon Lee, Paul Cattermole and Tina Barrett.

Oh-em-gee, millennials everywhere are reaching for their devices and wallets in preparation for the tickets to drop, meanwhile Generation Z are busy messing up their lyrics on TikTok (apparently S Club is cool again?).

The seven-strong pop group climbed to fame around the late 90s with hits like Reach, Don’t Stop Movin’ and Bring It All Back and during their five years together sold a staggering 10million albums.

The 11-date S Club Reunited tour will see the icons perform together for the first time since their Children In Need effort in 2014, before which they hadn’t sang together since their split in 2003.

‘Music and friendship have always been at the core of everything that we’ve ever done. We hope everyone can join us for one big party!’

How much the tickets will be remains to be seen, but we do know a few things about the upcoming S Club 7 tour so far.

The beloved British pop group S Club performed their final US show on Tuesday at The Orpheum theater in Los Angeles, wrapping up their 25th Anniversary tour -- The Good Times Tour -- to a sold-out crowd.

Band members Jon Lee, Tina Barrett, Jo O'Meara, Bradley McIntosh and Rachel Stevens spoke with ET's Denny Directo ahead of Tuesday's show, and reflected on their anniversary tour -- as well as the loss of their bandmate, Paul Cattermole , who died of heart failure in April 2023 at age 46.

"It's been nostalgic going back, especially to L.A. actually, because obviously we filmed all our TV shows here and spent so much time here," Stevens shared. "So it's felt so familiar. But yeah, being back here and performing in the States has been such an amazing experience."

The band -- formerly known as S Club 7 -- first announced their anniversary tour last year, but revealed they'd changed the name of the tour after Cattermole's death.

They'd been planning to tour for some time, and McIntosh explained, "Paul was so so excited to do the tour and I think he would be really really angry with us if would have stopped it. I really do."

"He would have loved it so much," Lee added.

"But I know it was never a question to not do it. I think it just turned into something different," Stevens shared. "Like, we renamed the tour The Good Times Tour in tribute to him, 'cause that was [what] he was going to, acoustically, in the show. And it just became a real beautiful tribute and celebration for him, and for the fans too."

According to Barrett, the group has "kept in touch with his family, and they came to one of the shows. They just really thought it was beautifully done, and respectful."

"I think Paul would want to be remembered as just being crazy and goofy and fun, you know?" O'Meara chimed in. "Because he was just such a bundle of energy. And I think we've all realized that you notice it, more than ever, that energy is missing."

McIntosh revealed that the group "got a tattoo the other day on Venice beach" which read "Good Times" in honor of Cattermole. The performer explained that the design included "a little heart for Paul."

The bandmates carried on after losing Cattermole, however, and performed a number of shows, bringing their celebrated energy and good vibes to fans across the globe -- albeit without former band member Hannah Spearritt.

"I think that the main thing is just the positivity of the songs and the music. And I think people just seem to love that whole positive thing that we put out," O'Meara said of the group's fanbase. "Because, you know, there's so much negativity in the world. So I think it's just a nice way for people just to escape back to, you know, more innocent times maybe."

Whatever Happened To The Members Of S Club 7?

S club 7

S Club 7 was an iconic pop group that dominated airwaves and MTV throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. The peppy group of seven became famous for No.1 hits like "S Club Party," "Bring It All Back," and "Never Had a Dream Come True." In 1999 and 2000, the group even starred in their own TV series, "S Club in Miami" and later "S Club 7 in L.A.," in which the group played versions of themselves. For a whole generation, there may never be another party quite like an S Club party.

The family-friendly group and their upbeat, catchy pop music have pretty much become symbols of their time. It's hard for any millennial to listen to their sunshine-infused music without feeling a twinge of nostalgia. But whatever became of the people behind the music? Here's what happened to Bradley, Jo, Tina, Rachel, Hannah, Paul, and Jon of S Club 7.

Bradley McIntosh joined an unsuccessful boy band after leaving S Club 7

Bradley McInstosh posing in 2000s vs 2023

Bradley McIntosh was one of the three boys in the group. You may remember him as the voice behind S Club 7's hit "Don't Stop Movin'." As McIntosh was one of the band's edgier members, whose style often veered from pop into hip hop, it's no surprise that he pretty much left pop music behind after the group disbanded. In 2006, McIntosh joined the ranks of Upper Street, a boy band that included former members of New Kids on The Block, Steps, 911, and Another Level. Unfortunately, Upper Street never really took off. Just one month after releasing their first single, the group disbanded.

Since his S Club 7 days, McIntosh has been busy, both personally and professionally. In 2017, the pop icon welcomed a son named Kairo. McIntosh has continued to flourish in the music industry as a songwriter and producer. He has also participated in numerous one-off performances with other former S Club 7 members. In 2023, McIntosh, along with all six of his former bandmates, announced their plans for an S Club 7 reunion tour. Along with his impressive career moves, the singer has also been making strides in the gym. In early 2023, McIntosh flaunted his buff bod on his Instagram page .

Hannah Spearritt experienced ups and downs after S Club 7 broke up

Hannah Spearritt smiling in 2000s vs 2023

Hannah Spearritt has a sense of humor when it comes to her S Club 7 days. When she was shown an old clip of herself on "Lorraine," the singer exclaimed: "I literally look like a 12-year-old boy!" (via YouTube ). Spearritt has certainly come into her own over the years — she has even said farewell to her '90s haircut! After S Club 7, Spearritt ventured into acting, scoring roles in "Primeval," "Casualty," and "EastEnders."

The budding actor didn't limit herself to roles in film and TV — she has also appeared in a few stage productions. In 2019, she played the fairy godmother in a pantomime version of "Cinderella." In addition to performing, Spearritt has numerous other passions that she enjoys sharing with fans. The singer's Instagram page is a glorious assortment of S Club 7 nostalgia, skincare recommendations, and healthy foods. Spearritt also uses social media to share updates about her two adorable daughters, Taya and Tora.

Unfortunately, Spearritt has struggled financially in the years following her S Club 7 fame. In a 2023 interview with The Sun , the star revealed that she and her family were homeless. Spearritt explained that despite generating a fortune in profits, the band members earned comparatively minuscule wages. Music executives — not the group members themselves — ended up cashing in on the group's success. "People think we must all be millionaires but sadly it's just not true," Spearritt said.

Jo O'Meara kept on singing

Jo O'Meara smiling in 2000's vs 2023

After S Club 7 parted ways, Jo O'Meara used her powerful voice to launch a solo career, releasing her first single  "What Hurts the Most" in 2005. Later that year, O'Meara completed her solo album, "Relentless." Unfortunately, the record wasn't met with much success, and O'Meara's solo career seemed to grind to a halt. In 2007, she pivoted to television with an appearance on the show "Celebrity Big Brother." During the show, the former S Clubber engaged in bullying and racism toward her Indian co-star, Shilpa Shetty. O'Meara's behavior led to serious professional and financial consequences. In 2021, the disgraced singer expressed regret over the situation, telling The Sun : "If I could go back in time and change what happened then I would, but I can't."

O'Meara took another stab at a solo music career in 2021. The singer released her second album, "With Love," followed by a cover of Michael Jackson's Halloween anthem, "Thriller," the following year. Aside from her musical ventures, O'Meara has been busy raising her son, Lenny, who was born in 2008. The singer has also struggled with health issues stemming from herniated disks in her spine. After a series of back surgeries in 2022, O'Meara seemed ready to hit the stage again for S Club 7's 2023 reunion tour.

Jon Lee became an actor after S Club 7 split up

Jon Lee of S Club 7

Since his pop star days, Jon Lee's career has taken a slightly different turn. These days, he's working as a West End actor as he revealed in an interview (via YouTube ). According to Official London Theater , the singer-actor starred in "Oliver!" prior to his S Club 7 days. Later, when he performed a song from the musical "Les Miserables" at a concert, West End producers contacted him to see if he would audition for a role in the show. Lee got the role and has gone on to have a thriving stage career, starring in "Jersey Boys" and "Forever Plaid" (via What's On Stage ). In 2018, Lee also turned to reality TV, appearing on the ITV show "Dinner Date" and looking for romance.

And what does Lee look like these days? Well, he looks remarkably similar to his early-aughts self. As Lee explained in an interview (via YouTube), the star has a pretty regimented lifestyle that keeps him looking and feeling his best. He's a vegetarian and frequently goes to the gym and practices yoga. Sounds like this S Club 7 alumnus has done pretty well for himself!

Rachel Stevens found solo success

Rachel Stevens posing in 2000s vs 2023

Rachel Stevens went on to have a successful solo music career after S Club 7 disbanded. She released two solo albums — 2003's "Funky Dory" and 2005's "Come And Get It." Her singles "Sweet Dreams My LA Ex," "Some Girls," and "More More More," all reached the second or third spot on the U.K. charts.

While her solo career came to an end in 2005, Stevens has kept pretty busy. In 2019, she performed in a stage show called "Rip it Up The 70s." The pop icon has also dabbled in fashion. In 2022, Stevens partnered with Oasis to create The Rachel Stevens Collection which features dresses, pantsuits, and other chic apparel.

Stevens has also experienced some major changes in her personal life. In 2022, the singer split from her husband after 12 years of marriage. In a conversation with The Sun , Stevens admitted: "It's been really painful, really sad." Despite her heartbreak, she is focused on her career –– and on raising her daughters, Amalie and Minnie. Stevens has even hinted that her daughters are performers in the making. "We've always got music on in our house, my kids have now got the buzz," Stevens told The Daily Mail in 2020. "Amalie definitely wants to be a singer, that's going to be her career." It sounds like she's raising the next generation of pop stars!

Tina Barrett released new music in 2020

Tina Barrett of S Club 7

Tina Barrett, like many of her fellow ex-bandmates, has continued performing since S Club 7 broke up. The singer released a series of singles beginning in 2012, like "Fire," "Makin' Me Dance," and "All Fired Up." Apparently, Barrett was hoping to release a solo album, but it never materialized. Nevertheless, Barrett continues to release music; her latest single "Mwah Mwah"  was released in January 2020.

Much like fellow S Club 7 members Jon Lee and Hannah Spearritt, Barrett seems to have a penchant for musical theater. In 2013, she starred in a production of "Beauty and the Beast" and in 2014, she played the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz." Barrett has had a pretty busy personal life, too. In 2016, she gave birth to a son, Roman. "He looked so perfect ... I cried!" Barrett recalled (via The Sun ).

Paul Cattermole died in 2023

Paul Cattermole posing in 2000's vs 2023

In 2023, Paul Cattermole died unexpectantly at his home in Dorset, England. Before his death, Cattermole divulged his rocky history with S Club 7 to The Guardian . He and bandmate, Hannah Spearritt, dated on and off for five years — although he told the publication that the relationship was written into their show's script. In 2002, Cattermole decided to leave the group, saying: "It had got to the point where things were being handled so badly, I had to go." Cattermole confessed that the following years were tough, mostly because he never saw much of the money that S Club 7 made in their heyday.

By 2018, Cattermole was in serious debt and was found to be auctioning off his Brit Award on eBay. He later attempted to explain the decision on ITV's "Loose Women" saying he wished he'd have been able to sell the award quietly. In 2019, Cattermole appeared on the reality dating show "First Dates Hotel." The S Club 7 star broke down in tears on the show after revealing that his unusual life made relationships hard, as it caused him to hide his true self.

In 2023, Cattermole and his former bandmates revealed their plans for a reunion tour. Despite his troubled past, the announcement seemed like a turning point in Cattermole's career. However, Paul Cattermole passed away on April 6, 2023 — just six months before the tour was scheduled to kick off.

Paul Cattermole continued performing until his tragic death

Paul Cattermole posing in a black hat

Just a few weeks after the band announced their reunion tour, S Clubber Paul Cattermole died at the age of 46. Cattermole's family broke the devastating news, saying: "It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved son and brother Paul Cattermole." The statement continued: "While the cause of death is currently unknown, Dorset Police has confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances. Paul's family, friends and fellow members of S Club request privacy at this time" (via the  BBC ).

In the aftermath of his death, fans and fellow performers reflected on Cattermole's music career. After S Club 7 disbanded, the singing sensation founded a nu metal band called Skua. Despite the shift in his focus, it's clear that S Club 7 remained close to Cattermole's heart. The pop star reunited with the group on several occasions, including their 2015 reunion tour. Cattermole's final Instagram post  even featured all seven members of the band. S Club 7 expressed their grief in a heartfelt statement that read: "We are truly devastated by the passing of our brother Paul. There are no words to describe the deep sadness and loss we all feel. We were so lucky to have had him in our lives and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. He will be so deeply missed by each and every one of us."

Fellow entertainers paid tribute to Paul Cattermole after his death

Paul Cattermole performing in

Paul Cattermole's death triggered an enormous outpouring of grief, especially from his former bandmates. Hannah Spearritt was reportedly hit hardest by the tragedy. According to a source, the former bandmate and ex-girlfriend of Cattermole was "inconsolable" over his death. "This has come out of nowhere and she is simply numb," the insider told The Daily Mail . Cattermole's legacy includes roles in the stage production of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." The show took to social media to honor the late star, posting a throwback video of Cattermole performing an S Club 7 song. The tribute stated: "Paul was a treasured cast member and we'll always remember him as an incredibly humble, kind and gentle man. We're grateful for the memories he gave us on and off the stage" (via the Mirror ).

Paul Cattermole's death undoubtedly left a void in the lives of his friends and loved ones. A source told The Daily Mail that his bandmates want to honor his memory by proceeding with their 2023 reunion tour. "Paul was so excited ... That's why there are some members of S Club 7 who are determined the tour goes on. To them, it seems the perfect way to pay tribute to him," the source stated. Fans and fellow celebs swarmed social media with tributes for the late singer. Many fans reflected on how Cattermole, together with his S Club 7 bandmates, had impacted their lives.

Former members of S Club 7 formed a breakaway group

Female members of S Club 7 posing

Even though S Club 7 split up in 2003, some of its members actually continued to perform together. In 2008, Paul Cattermole, Jo O'Meara, and Bradley McIntosh reunited under the name S Club 3. The group entertained clubgoers and student unions around the United Kingdom for years. According to HuffPost U.K. , S Club 3 was the brainchild of Cattermole and McIntosh, who eventually pulled O'Meara into the project. Later, Tina Barrett joined in. In 2015, Cattermole exited the group, leaving O'Meara, McIntosh, and Barrett to continue as a three-piece act. The doors of S Club 3- ish continued to rotate for a while. In 2019, Hannah Spearritt entered the fold. Jo O'Meara departed from the group in 2020 in order to focus on her solo career. S Club 3 performed a lot of S Club 7 music — but in 2017, they released a brand new single. The song, "Family," was a charitable project to raise money for The Rainbow Trust children's charity.

The next evolution of S Club 7 was a humble two-piece featuring Tina Barrett and Bradley McIntosh. To compliment their new look, the duo bestowed themselves with a new name — S Club. Under their new moniker, Barrett and McIntosh rocked out at nightclubs and festivals until 2023, when the original S Club 7 announced their triumphant comeback.

S Club 7 got back together in 2015 for a reunion tour

S club 7

For hardcore S Club 7 fans, 2015 was a special year. The entire gang got back together again for a brief arena reunion tour. While fans loved seeing the group reunited, the experience wasn't exactly pleasant for everyone involved, according to former band member Paul Cattermole. "There was a fall-out over whether we should be doing a dance troupe, Diversity-type show with choreography to backing tracks, or do what we've always done and have a live band," Cattermole explained to NME . He went on to say that he pushed so hard for live music and that "there was even shouting."

Based on Jo O'Meara's interview with The Sun , it sounds like the entire group agreed that a one-off tour was best. "It was a reunion tour, it's best to leave it short and sweet," she said. However, in the fall of 2019, fans got some seriously exciting news when a potential 20th-anniversary reunion tour was announced by the  Mirror .

S Club 7 reunited for a comeback tour in 2023

S Club 7 posing on a red couch

25 years after their debut, S Club 7 may seem like somewhat of a relic these days. However, their impact on pop music is undeniable. That's why fans rejoiced in February of 2023 when the band announced their plans to embark on a European reunion tour. "We are very excited to say that we are going back out on tour in October," Rachel Stevens told BBC's "The One Show" during a group interview with her bandmates. "We're just so excited to get back out there and sing our hearts out and perform." Bradley McIntosh also chimed in, promising that the tour would be packed with positivity and noughties nostalgia.

On their Instagram account , the "Bring It All Back" crooners wrote: "We are over the moon to be able to get back on stage this October to celebrate 25 years since this unforgettable journey began." Fans flooded the comments to celebrate the news, with one person exclaiming: "My 10 year old self is SCREAMING!!!!!". Fans from outside of the U.K. and Ireland also responded, begging the group to add some international appearances to their highly-anticipated tour. If any doubt remains about S Club 7's relevance, just know that their first round of concert tickets sold out in just a few minutes!

The seven-piece pop group were originally created by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller in 1998 and produced hits including Reach , Don’t Stop Movin’ and their debut Bring It All Back.

In 2003 they disbanded but briefly came back together in 2014 to perform a medley of their best-known songs for the BBC Children In Need appeal.

Their new UK and Ireland arena reunion tour will see all the original seven members – Rachel Stevens , Bradley McIntosh, Hannah Spearritt, Jo O’Meara, Jon Lee, Paul Cattermole and Tina Barrett – back on the road together.

The band said: “After eight years it feels amazing to announce that we’re reuniting and performing together again.

“We’re so excited to bring the S Club party back to our fans across the country to celebrate 25 years of S Club 7.

“We can’t even believe it’s been so long. Music and friendship have always been at the core of everything that we’ve ever done.

“We hope everyone can join us for one big party.”

They will open their 11-date tour on October 13 in Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena before continuing to cities including Dublin, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester.

The O2 in London will be the last stop on the tour on October 28.

Appearing on BBC’s The One Show after the announcement, singer McIntosh revealed the tour will have a nostalgic feeling to it.

“Obviously we’re bringing the late 90s/early noughties. So it’s a lot of fun”, he said.

“Our music is very positive and I think in today’s times you need a bit of positive, you need to be picking up so that’s what we’re here to do.”

The group confirmed everyone had immediately agreed to reunite as it “felt like the right time” for them.

They said they were most excited to perform their hit Reach on the tour but added that they were open to fans contacting them through social media to request what songs they would like to hear during the shows.

During their five years together they produced four studio albums with their debut, S Club, launching in 1999.

They followed this up with the chart-topper 7 in 2000, Sunshine in 2001 and Seeing Double in 2002.

The group also achieved number one status on a number of tracks including Never Had A Dream Come True and Have You Ever.

They also cemented their fame after starring in their own BBC TV series Miami 7 and LA 7.

After they called it a day, band members went on to explore other pursuits, with Stevens launching a solo music career and competing on Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing On Ice.

Spearritt became a TV actress, with roles in shows such as ITV’s Primeval, and Lee has performed in West End shows including Les Miserables and Jersey Boys.

McIntosh, O’Meara and Cattermole later became members of the spin-off group S Club Allstars, previously S Club 3, with Barrett joining them in 2014.

O’Meara, who also released solo music and appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007, has gone through a number of back operations in recent years.

She confirmed on The One Show she feels “ready” to get back on stage, adding: “I’m doing physio. I’m allowed to swim now so I’m just starting to get my back stronger but I will definitely be there on that stage. 100%.”

Cattermole dated band member Spearritt for five years while they were in the band, and briefly rekindled a relationship in 2015 according to reports.

Cattermole was 21 when he found global stardom as part of the band. Formed in 1998, the group — created by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller — signed with Polydor Records and hit the charts at No. 1 on its debut single, “Bring it All Back.”

More hits followed with “S Club Party” and “Don’t Stop Movin.’” The septet also starred in a successful BBC television series called “Miami 7,” which aired for four seasons. The youth-targeted sitcom — billed as “the Monkees for a new generation” — aired in the U.S. on Fox Family and later on ABC Family, following the group from London to Florida seeking fame, fortune and fun.

Cattermole left S Club 7 in 2002 and formed a rock band called Skua, which split up after a year. He joined S Club at its 2014 reunion. The singer also toured briefly with a production of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” but left due to a back injury. Appearing on British talk show “Loose Women” in 2018, Cattermole detailed his struggles with money. In recent years, he has performed tarot card readings, describing himself as “psychic detective.”

“There are no words to describe the deep sadness and loss we all feel,” the band wrote. “We were so lucky to have had him in our lives and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. He will be so deeply missed by each and every one of us.”

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

At least 40 killed and dozens injured in Moscow concert hall shooting; ISIS claims responsibility

Updated on: March 22, 2024 / 8:30 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Several gunmen burst into a large concert hall on the edge of Moscow on Friday and sprayed the crowd with automatic gunfire, killing at least 40 people, injuring more than 100 others and setting fire to the venue in a brazen attack just days after President Vladimir Putin  cemented his grip on power in a highly orchestrated electoral landslide.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the attack as a "huge tragedy" and which state authorities are investigating as terrorism. The attack, which left the concert hall in flames with a collapsed roof, was the deadliest attack in Russia in years and came as the country's  war in Ukraine dragged into a third year.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on affiliated channels on social media. In a statement posted by its Aamaq news agency, the group said it attacked a large gathering of Christians in the city of Krasnogorsk on the outskirts of the Russian capital of Moscow, killing and wounding hundreds. It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the claim.

A U.S. official tells CBS News the U.S. has intelligence confirming the Islamic State's claims of responsibility, and that they have no reason to doubt those claims. The U.S. official also confirmed that the U.S. provided intelligence to Russia about a potential attack under the intelligence community's Duty to Warn requirement.

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson confirmed that in a statement provided to CBS News Friday evening.

"Earlier this month, the U.S. government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow —potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts— which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia," Watson said. "The U.S. government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding 'duty to warn' policy."

A U.S. law enforcement official tells CBS News that there is no known threat to the U.S. emanating from the Moscow attack.

Russia's Federal Security Service, the main domestic security and counter-terrorism agency, said 40 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in the attack at Crocus City Hall, a large music hall on Moscow's western edge.

The assailants threw explosives, triggering the massive blaze at the hall, which can accommodate 6,000, according to Russian news outlets. Video from outside showed the building on fire, with a huge cloud of smoke rising through the night sky. The street was lit up by the blinking blue lights of dozens of firetrucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

The attack took place as crowds gathered for a performance by the famous Russian rock band Picnic. Russian news reports said concertgoers were being evacuated, but that an unknown number could have been trapped by the blaze.

The prosecutor's office said several men in combat fatigues entered the concert hall and fired on concertgoers.

APTOPIX Russia Shooting

Repeated volleys of gunfire could be heard in videos posted by Russian media and on Telegram channels. One showed two men with rifles moving through the venue. Another showed a man inside the auditorium and saying the assailants had set it on fire, as gunshots rang out incessantly in the background.

Other videos showed up to four attackers, armed with assault rifles and wearing caps, who were shooting at screaming people at point-blank range.

Guards at the concert hall didn't have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported. It wasn't immediately clear what happened to the assailants, but some Russian news outlets suggested that they fled before special forces and riot police arrived.

Russian authorities said security has been tightened at Moscow's airports, railway stations and the capital's sprawling subway system. Moscow's mayor canceled all mass gatherings, and theaters and museums shut for the weekend. Other Russian regions also tightened security.

Gunmen attack concert hall in Moscow

The Kremlin hasn't blamed anyone for the attack, but some Russian lawmakers were quick to accuse Ukraine of being behind it. Hours before the attack, the Russian military launched a sweeping barrage on Ukraine's power system, crippling the country's biggest hydroelectric plant and other energy facilities and leaving more than a million people without electricity.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said Friday that he couldn't yet speak about all the details but that "the images are just horrible. And just hard to watch."

"Our thoughts are going to be with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack," Kirby said. "There are some moms and dads and brothers and sisters and sons and daughters who haven't gotten the news yet. This is going to be a tough day."

The attack followed a statement issued earlier this month by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow that urged Americans to avoid crowded places in the Russian capital in view of "imminent" plans by extremists to target large gatherings in Moscow, a warning that was repeated by several other Western embassies.

Asked about the embassy's notice issued on March 7, Kirby referred the question to the State Department, adding: "I don't think that was related to this specific attack."

Responding to a question about whether Washington had any prior information about the assault, Kirby responded: "I'm not aware of any advance knowledge that we had of this terrible attack."

Russia was shaken by a series of deadly terror attacks in the early 2000s during the fighting with separatists in the Russian province of Chechnya.

In October 2002, Chechen militants took about 800 people hostage at a Moscow theater. Two days later, Russian special forces stormed the building, and 129 hostages and 41 Chechen fighters died, most of them from the effects of narcotic gas Russian forces used to subdue the attackers.

And in September 2004, about 30 Chechen militants seized a school in Beslan in southern Russia, taking hundreds of hostages. The siege ended in a bloodbath two days later and more than 330 people, about half of them children, were killed.

CBS News' David Martin, Andy Triay and Olivia Gazis contributed to this report.

At least 60 dead after explosion, gunfire hit popular Moscow concert venue

Several gunmen opened fire Friday night at Crocus City Hall, a popular concert venue on the outskirts of Moscow, Russian state news agencies reported. Dozens of people were reported injured or killed and the building was on fire in the most deadly terrorist attack in Russia in more than a decade.

“People in camouflage, at least three, burst into the ground floor of the Crocus City Hall and opened fire from automatic weapons. There are definitely wounded,” state news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing its correspondent at the scene.

The terrorist group ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, according to its news agency. A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information, said the United States had “no reason to doubt” the claim.

“After that they threw a grenade or an incendiary bomb, which started a fire,” the RIA Novosti report added. “The people in the hall lay down on the floor to escape the shooting, and stayed there for 15-20 minutes, after which they began to crawl out. Many managed to get out.”

Videos, which were shared on Russian Telegram channels and verified by The Washington Post, show four men in camouflage entering a large marbled hall and opening fire, and shooters firing rounds in a concert hall, thick with smoke.

What to know about Islamic State group, which claimed the Moscow attack

Other clips show scores of bodies slumped on benches or the ground as well as a large fire erupting from the building’s roof. The roof of the concert venue partially collapsed and the fire reached 140,000 square feet, according to the news service Interfax, which cited emergency services.

One graphic video showed shooters firing for a full minute at point-blank range on a group of people trapped in an entrance.

At least 60 people were killed and more than 100 wounded, the Tass news agency reported, citing the press office of the Federal Security Service. Moscow’s health ministry said more than 50 ambulance teams have been deployed to the venue.

Some foreign embassies in Moscow had issued warnings in recent weeks urging their citizens to avoid mass gatherings out of concern for the risk of terrorist attacks.

Ukraine swiftly denied any responsibility for the attack. “Ukraine definitely has nothing to do with these events,” said Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukraine’s military intelligence agency blamed Russia’s security services for the operation and said they would probably use the fallout to build support for their war in Ukraine.

The attack was “a planned and deliberate provocation by the Russian special services at the behest of Putin,” GUR said in a Telegram post. Its purpose was to “justify even tougher strikes on Ukraine and total mobilization in Russia,” the agency said.

Some senior Russian officials, including former president Dmitry Medvedev, blamed the attack on Kyiv and threatened harsh retaliation. Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofyev called for a nuclear strike.

“Let’s give the civilian population of Ukraine 48 hours to leave the cities and finally end this war with the victorious defeat of the enemy. Using all forces and means,” Malofyev wrote on Telegram.

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow said March 7 that it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings” in the Russian capital, including concerts, and urged U.S. citizens to avoid them. National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said that the U.S. government shared the information that prompted the Embassy’s warning with Russian officials.

“Earlier this month, the U.S. Government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow — potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts — which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia,” Watson said. “The U.S. Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its long-standing ‘duty to warn’ policy.”

Recent intelligence reporting indicated the ISIS-K terrorist group, a branch of the Islamic State that has operated in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran, was active inside Russia, two U.S. officials told The Washington Post. The U.S. Embassy’s warning was based in part on intelligence reporting about possible ISIS-K activity inside Russia, said the U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information.

Crocus City Hall is adjacent to a large shopping mall and was the site of the 2013 Miss Universe pageant attended by Donald Trump — a visit to Moscow that factored into the controversial “Steele dossier,” a collection of largely unverified reports that claimed the Russian government had compromising information about the future president.

The attack began before the start of a Friday night concert by the rock band called Picnic. The musicians were apparently in their dressing room when it started. The concert was sold out, according to ticket agencies, suggesting that as many as 6,200 people may have been in the venue.

One witness said she was about to enter with her parents when the attack began.

“We were literally three steps away from the entrance when the shooting started … and a man fell down dead in front of me,” the girl, who gave her name as Anna, told the Russian channel TV Rain in a telephone interview. “People started shouting, ‘Run, they’re shooting!’ We didn’t realize it at first, because it sounded like firecrackers.”

Another witness counted “at least five” attackers, armed with assault rifles, ammunition and armored vests.

“They act like trained fighters,” the witness told Mash, a Russian Telegram channel. “At the moment of entering the building, the guards and people standing at the door were killed. Then they blocked the main entrance.”

As condolences and condemnations from world leaders poured in, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin ordered assistance for those affected by the attack and said authorities would cancel all cultural, sport and other mass gatherings for the weekend.

Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, said that “those who are behind this monstrous crime will suffer a well-deserved and inevitable punishment.”

Opposition politician Yulia Navalnaya called the attack “a nightmare.”

“Everyone involved in this crime must be found and held accountable,” Navalnaya, whose husband, Alexei Navalny, died last month in a Russian prison colony, wrote on social media.

Russia hits energy targets in Ukraine, showing need for more air defenses

Initial reports by Russian media suggested that some assailants might have barricaded themselves inside and that there could be at least 100 people still in the building — some potentially trapped by fire on an upper floor. Video appeared to show panicked concertgoers diving under seats as the sound of gunfire echoed around the hall. Some tried to escape through underground basements but found exit doors locked.

The scene outside the venue was chaotic. Emergency workers tended to the wounded while firefighters battled the blaze from the ground and helicopters above. Journalists covering the attack were reportedly beaten and forcibly removed from the scene by police.

Moscow regional governor Alexei Vorobyov said that at least 20 people had been hospitalized and that five were in critical condition.

Russia has suffered several terrorist attacks over the years, many of them related to its wars in Chechnya and authorities’ suppression of radical Islamic groups.

In 2011, an explosion at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport killed 37 people and injured 72.

In October 2002, heavily armed Chechen terrorists seized the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow and held hundreds of hostages for three days. At least 150 people died, the great majority due to Russian special forces’ decision to fill the venue with gas.

Siobhán O’Grady and Kostiantyn Khudov in Kyiv, Robyn Dixon and Natalia Abbakumova in Riga, Latvia, Shane Harris in Washington, and Jonathan Baran in San Francisco contributed to this report.
