Big entry numbers for this weekend’s Tour Durban

About 3 000 entries from the huge riding communities in the greater durban area are all preparing for ‘durban’s favourite weekend of cycling’..

tour durban 2023 road closures

DURBAN’S cyclists will be converging from all corners of the city on Cornubia Mall on Saturday (April 20) and Moses Mabhida on Sunday (April 21) for the annual aQuellé Tour Durban.

About 3 000 entries from the huge riding communities in the greater Durban area – from Ballito and uMhlanga in the north, to the Berea, Bluff and South Coast riders in the south, to the Pinetown and Kloof in the West – are all preparing for ‘Durban’s Favourite Weekend of Cycling’.

The off-road riders have their chance on Saturday, from Cornubia, in the aQuellé Tour Durban MTB, powered by Cycle Lab, and they will be able to take part in the traditional 40km, 20km and 10km MTB races on Saturday. There is a new 48km gravel race which has been added to the mix, and trail runners are also included for the first time this year.

On Sunday, the ‘roadies’ can get their fix with full road closure along the M4 as far as Mdloti as riders compete over the 110km, 42km and 28km distances.

The great news for the riders is that the weather is looking absolutely perfect. Saturday and Sunday should be dry with hardly any winds, and the temperatures are predicted to be warm. For the MTB and gravel riders, some rain early this week will probably be enough to settle some of the dust and make the tracks fast and grippy without leaving residual water.

Race registration is on Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, at Cycle Lab Cornubia.

All the MTB, gravel and trail run events are on Saturday, April 20, from near Cornubia Mall. The road races are on Sunday, April 21, starting and finishing at Moses Mabhida.

Main Road Closures (Sunday, April 21 from 03:30 until 13:00)

Masabala Yengwa Avenue: Southbound lane from Kings Park to Sandile Thusi Road. Isaiah Ntshangase Road: Closed in both directions from Masabala Yengwa Avenue to Ruth First Highway. Ruth First Highway (M4): Closed in both directions from Sandile Thusi Road to uMdloti. M41: Closed in both directions from M4 to Ridgeside Drive. Motorists in Durban warned of road closures

Motorists using the M4 are urged to use alternative routes on Sunday due to the aQuellé Tour Durban taking place.

aQuellé Tour Durban 2023

Cyclists will use the highway between Sandile Thusi Road (Argyle Road) and Umdloti from the early hours of the morning.

"This year the route is much simpler and the disruption will be kept to a minimum for motorists, with the only sections closed to vehicles being the M4 to Umdloti; a small portion on the M41 between Gateway and the M4; and the southbound lane of Masabalala Yengwa Avenue near Moses Mabhida Stadium," says race director, Alec Lenferna.

About 3 000 road riders are taking part in the 110km race.

The first riders are due to start just after 6am.

"Roads will begin to be closed off from 3.30am on Sunday, May 14, so as to prepare the routes and safely set up the various water points along the course, and roads will be re-opened as soon as the sweeps which travel behind the final riders pass the various points on the route," Lenferna said.

eThekwini Metro Police's Boysie Zungu asked motorists to make some adjustments on that day.

"We advise motorists to avoid these roads to avoid delays," said Zungu.

Here's the main road closures:

Sunday May 14th from 3.30am until 12.30pm

Masabala Yengwa Avenue: Southbound lane from Kings Park to Sandile Thusi Road.

Isaiah Ntshangase Road: Closed in both directions from Masabala Yengwa Avenue to Ruth First Highway.

Ruth First Highway (M4): Closed in both directions from Sandile Thusi Road to Umdloti.

M41: Closed in both directions from M4 to Ridgeside Drive.

Ridgeside Drive: Northbound between offramp from M41 and onramp to M41.

Sandile Thusi Road: Westbound lane closed from Ruth First Highway to Masabala Yengwa Avenue

Battery Beach Road: Closed in swimming pool area and no access to or from Masabala Yengwa Avenue.

Tour Durban: Mountain Biking takes centre stage on Saturday

The 2023 edition of the Tour Durban MTB powered by Cycle Lab on Saturday 13 May is set to be another action-packed, fun-filled edition.

The 2023 edition of the Tour Durban MTB powered by Cycle Lab on Saturday is set to be another action-packed, fun-filled edition as the single-track-minded adrenalin junkies enjoy the various routes that have been laid out for them.

The MTB arm of the Tour Durban has only recently become part of the weekend’s entertainment and the EMBA Trails around Cornubia Mall have become a popular playground for the off-road enthusiasts.

Mountain Biking takes Tour Durban stage

Previously the event used to incorporate what was labelled a cyclo-cross event, but was in reality more of a hybrid MTB / road race. With the popularity of mountain biking, organisers made the decision to have a dedicated mountain bike event and it offers riders of all abilities a chance to enjoy the trails with a 40km, 20km and 10km option, and this year it has been incorporated into the ROAG Series to add prestige.

In the men’s race, defending champion Brent Yelland is back for another shot at the top step of the podium and it seems like it will be a battle between the youngsters with a number of Under 23 entries making for a spicy lineup.

Chasing Yelland down this year will be young 18 year-old and 2022’s third place finisher Tayne Rudling, who will be hoping to pip the defending champion, with another Yelland, Sean, also out for race honours.

Late entries adding to the spice

With some late entries expected to add to the intrigue, the 40km marathon will be an exciting tussle with the youngsters also lining up against a handful of experienced riders, with the likes of Adriaan van Schoor and Jedson Tooms amongst the entrants for the shoot-out.

With the long road ride the focus for the weekend, the Sandton City Cycle Nation road team will also be present at the MTB race on Saturday, with Upper Highway local Bridget Theunissen amongst the entrants for the 40km ride and the likely favourite among the pre-entries.

The 22-year-old will be joined by her team-mate and defending champion in the road race, Joanne van de Winkel, as the team look to produce a pair of wins over the weekend.

The 2023 MTB will still have a strong racing element to it and riders will be out to claim the overall honours on what should be an exciting course.

One man is in custody after SWAT standoff in Moscow Tuesday morning

by CBS2 News Staff

KLEWThumbnail

MOSCOW, Idaho — MOSCOW, Idaho – Roughly six hours after initial reports, law enforcement had a man in custody.

Police from half a dozen different agencies lined Jackson Street in Moscow on Tuesday as a SWAT standoff unfolded.

Just after 2 a.m., multiple 911 calls reported shots fired in the 100 block of S. Almon Street.

And that the suspect had barricaded themselves in their apartment.

"Then upon arrival heard multiple additional gunshots, MPD patrol officers then requested assistance from surrounding agencies and activated the Latah Regional SWAT Team," Moscow Police Capt. Anthony Dahlinger said.

Captain Dahlinger says that members of the SWAT team negotiated with the man, and deployed non-legal gas munitions after the surrounding apartments were evacuated, but to no avail.

"Ultimately swat officers made entry into Mr. Adams' apartment and we were able to take him into custody without further incident," Capt. Dahlinger said.

Mr. Adams is 54-year-old Thomas L. Adams who has been arrested on charges of the unlawful discharge of weapons, disturbing the peace, and resisting obstructing officers.

He has already had his initial appearance in court on Tuesday and has been transported to the Latah County Jail.

"There have been no injuries reported at this time, the scene has been deemed safe and there is no further threat to the community," Capt. Dahlinger said.
