Western Australian fans will get their chance to catch Everclear live at Freo.Social on Friday, February 24; Carine Tavern on Saturday, February 25 and Dunsborough Tavern on Sunday, February 26, 2023.

Everclear are set to play tunes from their extensive catalogue, as well as highlighting their newer music, particularly their latest single Year of the Tiger .

Forming in Portland in 1991, Everclear made their mark on the famous 90s punk rock sound; with their debut album  World of Noise  earning international attention. Now with 11 studio albums and thousands of live shows under their belt, fans across the world are sharing in celebrating the band’s longevity.

“By mixing it up and digging into the catalogue, it still makes it fun and relevant for us, and I think for the fans as well,” said frontman  Art   Alexakis.  “It’s still important to play the hits, but by playing those other songs as well, it makes it all seem more vibrant and real.”

“Even though I recorded some of those songs over 20 years ago, I haven’t played them in a long time, so it’s like reinventing the wheel. I’m having more fun now than I have in years. I think all of us are.”

EVERCLEAR – 30th Anniversary 2023 Tour

About this tour.

Considering Everclear has written and recorded some truly iconic ’90s alt-rock hits, it would be all too easy these days for the band to be a victim of its past successes, relegated to performing as a glorified jukebox, existing to satisfy the nostalgic cravings of Gen Xers everywhere. But singer-guitarist Art Alexakis isn’t about to start phoning it in now.

Everclear continues to tour extensively, and while it’s a virtual surety that no Everclear gig is complete without a rendition of “Santa Monica” and “Father of Mine,” lately the band has found that exploring the full range of past material—especially the “deep cuts”—not only gives fans a rare treat, it also injects new life into the band’s live dynamic.

“By mixing it up and digging into the catalogue, it still makes it fun and relevant for us, and I think for the fans as well,” says Alexakis. “It’s still important to play the hits, but by playing those other songs as well, it makes it all seem more vibrant and real. Even though I recorded some of those songs 20 years ago, I haven’t played them in a long time, so it’s like reinventing the wheel. I’m having more fun now than I have in years. I think all of us are.”

Formed by Alexakis in 1991 in Portland, Oregon, Everclear has enjoyed a lengthy career spanning 11 studio releases, numerous videos, thousands of shows and accolades that include a 1998 Grammy nomination. Like a true survivor, Alexakis has soldiered on through multiple lineup changes over the years: During the “classic” era, the band also included Craig Montoya on Bass and Greg Eklund on drums; the current touring lineup features longtime members Davey French (guitar) and Freddy Herrera (bass), as well as drummer Brian Nolan (also with American Hi-Fi), who has performed with Everclear on multiple past tours.

About Everclear

Everclear is an American rock band formed in Portland, Oregon in 1991. The band was formed by Art Alexakis, the band's lead songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist; and for most of the band's height of popularity, consisted of Craig Montoya on bass guitar and Greg Eklund on drums. After the limited release of their independently released debut album, World of Noise, the band found success with their first three albums on Capitol Records: Sparkle and Fade, So Much for the Afterglow, and Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile, which were all certified platinum in sales. However, the following two albums Songs from an American Movie Vol. Two: Good Time for a Bad Attitude and Slow Motion Daydream, were not as well received, and as sales suffered, Montoya and Eklund left the band shortly after in 2003. After a brief stint of solo performances, Alexakis decided to push forward with the Everclear name, finding new musicians to perform with and releasing two more albums, Welcome to the Drama Club and Invisible Stars. Starting in 2012, Alexakis has also started up a 1990s nostalgia tour, called the Summerland Tour, that occurs every summer with Everclear and other 1990s alternative rock bands. In April 2015, the band released a ninth studio album entitled Black is the New Black.

Marcy Playground

Marcy Playground

Marcy Playground is celebrating over 25 years of active touring and recording since their breakthrough hit in 1997, 'Sex and Candy'. The band has 5 worldwide studio albums and an extensive history of tours, film & TV placements, and over 130 Million Streams. Their debut album certified platinum back in 1997, while the radio classic 'Sex and Candy' spent a record 15 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. Although the album was largely known for that hit, it actually sparked a total of 3 charting singles, including 'Sherry Fraser' and 'Saint Joe on the School Bus' - all 3 of which were also MTV and VH1 favorites. Their sophomore album, Shapeshifter, also produced a Billboard Modern Rock charting single 'Its Saturday'.

The band is named after Marcy Open grade school in Minneapolis where lead singer and songwriter John Wozniak attended. In the early 90's Wozniak moved to New York where he met co-founder and bassist, Dylan Keefe. The two eventually signed with Capitol Records and they have been a touring and recording partnership ever since.

Marcy Playground is no stranger to the big screen either. Their songs are featured on soundtracks such as Cruel Intentions, Antitrust, Simply Irresistible, Hurricane Streets, as well as many films by writer/director Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, Zack and Miri Make a Prono). The band continues to actively tour their 'flawlessly performed' (The Void Report) live show of cult classics and hits. The band is looking forward to the road ahead. As Wozniak concludes 'I'm always growing and always learning new things. Every time I meet somebody new I feel like that's an opportunity to grow because everyone has something new to offer. I think that the next record, hopefully, is going to reflect that'.

Everclear Talk ‘Sparkle And Fade’ Anniversary Tour And New Album

By David James Young

For nearly a quarter of a century, Art Alexakis has dedicated himself to Everclear . It hasn’t always been easy. It’s a name that went from being one of the most revered in alternative rock to a early 2000s punchline, but Alexakis has stayed true.

In many ways, it’s paid off. The band is still a drawcard across world tours and festivals, and their legacy contains at least a handful of quintessential songs of the genre’s evolution through the ’90s and into the 21st century. While many figureheads of the ’90s faded away entirely, Alexakis and Everclear kept the fire ablaze. Love them or hate them, you’ve just got to admire that level of persistence.

2015 is a big year in the Everclear camp. Not only are the band about to release their ninth studio album, Black is the New Black , they will also spend time on tour celebrating the 20-year annviersary of what may well be their most beloved album, Sparkle and Fade . Speaking from his Californian home, Alexakis talked through Everclear’s past and present and how he’s learned to reconcile with them both.

Music Feeds: Let’s go back to the origins of the Sparkle and Fade record. Can you remember the first material that you wrote for the album?

Art Alexakis: By the time we’d been signed to Capitol Records, which is EMI, back in ’94, I’d already written a couple of songs for the record. There was Heroin Girl , and I think My Sexual Life was kicking around as well. Before we went in to record, we spent about a month just writing.

I’d gotten a new house to live in, and I’d be writing songs at night after my eldest daughter went to bed. The guys would come over the next day, and we’d work out what to do with the songs I’d been writing. One of those songs ended up being Queen of the Air , and another one turned out to be Santa Monica .

MF: That would have been an obvious turning point in the writing process.

AA: I wrote that song at night, in the summer of ’94, right before we went into the studio. We were just trying to make the best record that we could. I was kind of on fire as a songwriter at that point, y’know – I was writing a lot of songs. I had what you call a fire in the belly. I didn’t have a similar passion for making music with that level of productivity for a long time after that whole period. I definitely think it came back when I was writing Black is the New Black , though.

MF: There are a lot of recurring elements in the songs on Sparkle and Fade . It’s a record of transition; a record of change. It really knows where it’s come from and where it’s going. There’s a lot of thematic structure involving starting anew while acknowledging how you got there. Did that fall into place naturally; or did you pick up on it after a couple of songs and begin writing with that theme in mind?

AA: Obviously, in hindsight, it was just what I wanted to get off my chest. When I write an album, it rarely keeps the working title that I give it. I wait until it’s a bit more fully-formed. This might sound a bit Hallmark card, but I think some of my records get to the point where they more or less name themselves.

MF: A lot of bands that are touring the anniversary of a particular album rarely have anything else going on at the same time. It’s pretty interesting, then, that the new album is coming out more or less in tandem with Sparkle and Fade’s anniversary. It must prove a challenge to try and steer people toward checking out the new record while simultaneously revisiting the album that more or less served as the band’s global introduction.

AA: Definitely. I think that’s what being in a band for twenty, thirty years is all about. You have to be in touch with your past. You can’t ignore it or act like it didn’t happen. You’ve got to learn not to make the same mistakes twice. In this instance, the two records complement one another – I think Black is the New Black is the hardest-rocking record that we’ve made since Sparkle and Fade .

I think that the people coming back around because of the Sparkle and Fade anniversary are really going to like this new record. We’re incorporating a few of them into the second set on our tour at the moment, after we’ve played Sparkle and Fade . They’re settling in really well.

MF: You mentioned being in touch with your past. Do you feel that’s something you’ve been able to achieve through the Summerland tours? Has that allowed you to develop a healthy relationship with that period of Everclear?

AA: I don’t know. Kind of, in a way. For those that don’t know, the Summerland tour is something I put together every year here in the States. It’s a big tour that brings together bands that were platinum and even multi-platinum bands in the ’90s that are still working, touring bands to this day. They aren’t just people waiting around for their next royalty cheque. They’re still out there, every night, chasing their dreams. All the bands on these tours are always playing new songs as well as their big hits.

I guess the nostalgia is a selling point for a lot of people, but it doesn’t even feel all that nostalgic to me. We’re all still playing because we’ve all got that fire inside. For me, this is what I’ve wanted to do since I was four years old. I’ve never imagined doing anything else.

Listen: Everclear – American Monster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xybET_IWjA

MF: That, of course, brings us to present day and the release of Black is the New Black . You mentioned each record’s creation being a little different – how did this one come about?

AA: I wanted a dark, heavy record and it came out the exact way that I wanted it to. I wanted it to have a classic feel, but at the same time keep a contemporary edge. I wrote most of this record on electric guitar, which is a bit different to how I normally do things. I think that really helped in the focus on rock for this album.

It’s a lot less poppy. It took about a year to make – I mean, we started recording last March and finished in October. The songs were mostly written in the summer of 2013. For me, that’s a pretty quick turn around. [laughs]

MF: You’ll be back in Australia in May for the Sparkle and Fade tour . What kind of demographic assembles at Everclear shows these days? Obviously, there’d be a lot of people that were in their teens and their twenties when Sparkle and Fade came out; but there’s also a younger demographic that might have come in around the release of Wonderful or even Volvo-Driving Soccer Mom.

AA: You know what’s funny… it’s a little bit older, for the most part, but there’s this huge amount of kids that were too young to have been there when these songs came out. Some of them weren’t even born when Sparkle and Fade came out. They grew up listening to it through their mums and dads or their older siblings.

Some of them even sought us out on their own after hearing about us. We see them whenever we’re playing an all-ages show, and it’s crazy. It’s like “How do you know these lyrics?” They know every word to every song! They know these lyrics better than I do! [laughs]

MF: It really goes to show that people are still connecting with this album so many years after the fact. Even if they were too young or weren’t alive when it came out, there’s still something about these songs that has struck a chord and allowed them to exist in the ether.

AA: My eldest daughter is 22, almost 23. She’s in a band, and they’re all really into Cheap Trick and Aerosmith and bands like that. I thought it was strange at first, considering they weren’t around when that was all huge – but I realised that it’s all classic music. The fact that people feel the same way about our music and these songs is such a compliment. It’s a testament to the work this band has put in. It’s not tied to a particular generation or a particular time – it’s just stuck with people that love rock & roll.

MF: Do you think it’s things like this that motivated you to continue Everclear? There was a point in 2003 where the other members – the “classic” lineup – left the band…

AA: [interrupting] They didn’t leave the band. I kicked them out.

MF: Right. It still would have lead you to a crossroads of sorts, though, as to whether to keep the name. There must have been something that lead you to believe that pressing on as Everclear made sense.

AA: It’s always been my band. What a lot of people don’t know is that, when those guys were in the band, Greg [Eklund] and Craig [Montoya]… that was the third version of Everclear. Everclear went on before them and it went on after them. I know it’s hard for a lot of people to understand, considering they were there in the band at the right time when we were having our most success, but that’s the way it was. I have guys that are in the band now that have been in the band just as long as those guys were. It won’t be long before they will have been in the band for even longer. They’ve played on as many records, if not more.

MF: It’s basically perceived as the ‘original’ Everclear and then Everclear 2.0, in a way.

AA: I suppose I did come a crossroads, in that regard. When I put the band together, I wasn’t sure if they were going to be a backing band for me playing solo. There was the potential for it to turn into a different band entirely, with a new name and a new sound. We were definitely going to play Everclear songs, that much was obvious. They were my songs. I wrote them. It was up in the air for awhile, though.

As luck would have it, though, we started playing some new songs together that I’d been writing after the other guys left. It sounded like Everclear. It felt just as much like Everclear as it did before. Looking back, I feel like I did the right thing.

I didn't like Everclear live...the lead singer just yells, and does not sing musically.

I LOVED the performance by Vertical Horizon! They are great musicians with solid vocals and harmonies. Even the new song off of their upcoming album was great. Can't wait for it!

Very good show but this was the shortest concert I have ever attended. From start to finish just over a hour long. Played all their best songs but not much else just way to short. The Parker Playhouse is my favorite concert venue in South Florida.

everclear perth tour

It poured in Perth -- but only the Wallabies were stuck in the mud

everclear perth tour

Australia came to Perth looking for an improved performance on last week's 33-7 loss to the Springboks -- what they got however was just more of the same as they again had little luck breaking down a near impenetrable green wall.

The only time Australia were able to get in behind the South African defence was when debutant winger Max Jorgensen ran onto a Tom Wright cross-kick and sampled clean air on a run downfield. But the 19-year-old winger left his chip too late, and it was blocked just as Wallabies fans around Optus Stadium were rising to their feet.

That was pretty much all the Australian contingent in the 58,197-strong crowd had to cheer on a night that left Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt with more questions than answers.

Topping Schmidt's to-do list will be working out how the Wallabies can generate some go-forward after they were smashed at the gainline for the second straight week, the forwards battered and bruised following a 30-12 defeat.

The Wallabies were forced into uncontested scrums after James Slipper and Allan Alaalatoa both picked up head knocks, the loosehead having only come on at halftime for Angus Bell, who had suffered a cut close to his eye during a torrid first half.

"I was really proud of the way we hung in through to halftime, almost could have got our nose in front at halftime, which I think would have given the boys a little bit of oxygen, a little bit of belief," Schmidt said of his side's performance. "Unfortunately we didn't quite get there.

"And then right at the start of the second half, Slips had come on at skipper and we lost him straight away, and we got a little bit disheveled in the pack because we were down numbers. At the same time they were bringing some numbers on that are pretty impressive obviously... they had some firepower they brought on.

"I was also proud that we didn't die wondering, we chanced our arm a few times in pretty tough conditions; it was tough going with the carry and to be able carry in these conditions -- they actually turned a fair bit of ball over as well -- and we survived, scrambled back, and survived a couple of early threats as well, which again I was proud of the effort that was made."

Amid the confusion, Australia played a brief passage with only 14 players, even though they did not legally have to lose a player following the switch to uncontested scrums.

While the Boks did butcher some try-scoring opportunities, the reality is that things could not have gone much better for Rassie Erasmus after the master coach had made a whopping 11 changes to the starting Springboks side that had so easily put the Wallabies away in Brisbane, and yet he still got away with another bonus-point win in Perth.

Again, the Boks simply overpowered the Wallabies through the middle of the paddock, while man-of-the-match Cheslin Kolbe, winger Makazole Mamimpi and fullback Apehele Fassi combined for some scintillating play out wide.

Australia stayed in touch via the boot of Noah Lolesio up until the hour mark, before replacement hooker Malcolm Marx peeled off the back of a maul to score South Africa's third try. Marx would get another inside the final 10 as the world champions finished off the ideal fortnight in Australia, picking up a perfect 10 points ahead of their two-Test visit by the All Blacks.

"It was nervous for me until minute 70 when we were on our goal-line and we conceded two penalties in a row, it could have easily been that we made another mistake, but then the players, Eben [Etzebeth] and the guys said not another penalty," Erasmus said of his decision to rotate his squad and then the victory on Saturday night.

"So no the whole game was nerve-wracking... but it was good to have security on the bench and sometimes that's why we pick teams like that."

Earlier, the Wallabies tried their hand at some attack not exactly conducive to the awful conditions that swept across Optus Stadium in the run to kick-off and then for much of the first half. Waiting on the end of their adventurous kicks were Kolbe and Mapimpi, who quickly turned defence into attack.

The Boks appeared certain to score inside 15 minutes after Kolbe swooped on a chip from Marika Koroibete, the winger opening up the Australian defence before his pass to an unmarked Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was grassed by the fly-half, the No. 10 going with one hand instead of two and ultimately paying the price.

Wallabies centre Hunter Paisami then tried a cross-kick from inside his own 22, which Mapimpi easily snaffled, steadied, and then tore off down the touchline, only to be denied a five-pointer by a fine try-saving tackle from Wright.

The world champions did not however waste a third invitation to sting the Wallabies for their errors as a Paisami knock-on was quickly shifted to Mapimpi, who dropped a sublime left-footed grubber down the touchline that sat up beautifully for Fassi to score in the corner. Schmidt said later he thought a Springbok hand had played the ball on the floor at the ruck, but it was not checked by the Television Match Official at the time so the try stood.

Despite their inability to break down the Boks' defence, the Wallabies still only went into the break 11-9 down. And they could have found themselves in the lead had Lolesio not pushed a penalty attempt to the right of the posts after the halftime siren.

But it would have only given the Australians in the crowd false hope, as South Africa quickly reasserted their dominance with a try just three minutes after the interval, helped in part by some Nic White silliness that cost the Wallabies an extra 10 metres.

For the second straight week, Australia could muster only a fraction of their opponents' run metres. While they showed more endeavour than Brisbane, which was brave given the appalling conditions in the west, the Wallabies were still hammered at the gainline.

Erasmus, thanks to a seemingly ever-expanding legion of monster ball-carriers, has no such issue to confront. He will enjoy a trip back across the Indian Ocean content in the knowledge he can call on all of the players he rested on Saturday night, plus a few more who didn't make the trip in Australia, to greet the All Blacks in two weeks' time.

Win the first of those Tests, in Johannesburg, and the Boks will have taken a major step towards their first Rugby Championship title since 2019.

The Wallabies will regain Taniela Tupou for their two-week tour of Argentina, but the tighthead, who missed the two games against South Africa following the death of his father, cannot be expected to shoulder the ball-carrying load alone.

"He's a bit of a tank isn't he, he's pretty hard to stop if we can get him with a bit of momentum," Schmidt said of Tupou's looming return. "But even last week in the second half, I thought that Harry [Wilson] got some good gainline, Bob Valetini got some good gainline.

"But I do feel that we've got to share the load. We can't say that we've got Nela back, he's gonna give us gainline, we've got to share the load. And we've got to keep building other players to be confident, and we've got to have live options. I think one of the things when they're storming at you is when they're not sure who's going to get the ball, and we've got to work really hard at all that.

"I thought Lukhan [Salakaia-Loto] carried the probably best I've seen him tonight, and I was gutted for him and obviously for us, when he lost that ball [late in the game], because that again was an opportunity for us to get closer enough on the scoreboard to put them under some pressure... you can't afford to miss those."

No one can question the effort of Australia's pack, their willingness to keep throwing themselves into the Springboks defenders is admirable and certainly justifies Schmidt's praise for their resilience. But on Saturday night Wilson was the only forward to register double-digit run metres [17], on nine carries.

The next best? Replacement Tom Hooper with six -- on one carry alone.

Argentina won't deliver the same unbridled physicality as the world champion up front, but their performance in Wellington last week showed just how dogged they too can be around the collision, even if it wasn't the case in Auckland earlier on Saturday.

Schmidt must somehow find a way to get his forward pack advancing, which will allow Australia's undersized backs the extra time and space they so desperately need.

Given the torrential rain in Perth it looked like both teams might spend time treading water at Optus Stadium -- but there was only one team firmly stuck in the mud.
