Welcome to a new year at USC

August 20, 2024

Dear Trojan Family, We are excited to start a new academic year and welcome our new and returning students, faculty, staff, and alumni to campus. It’s a wonderful time to renew and create new relationships, explore something different, and set fresh goals. We have a very busy term ahead, with new academic programs, events around joining the Big Ten, marquee student performances, research breakthroughs, and so much more. We hope you had a refreshing summer and look forward to seeing you. Over the summer we tightened and expanded our rules and processes designed to ensure our campus is safe and welcoming for everyone. A list of links to this critical information is included below. One thing you’ll notice immediately is the improved process of accessing campus. We hope the new system will make it faster and easier.  Last Spring’s Challenges : The events of last spring were particularly challenging for campuses nationwide. USC has seen peaceful protests, vigils, and marches for years, including more than 130 last year alone. However, the spring semester brought incidents that tested our values, disregarded our policies, sparked fears, and required unprecedented safety measures.  While many in our community were not directly involved in the protests, we recognize the genuine pain and frustration driving them. This suffering and passion did not disappear over the summer. We hope by making our policies, guidelines, and rules clearer, we can make USC welcoming and safe for all, no matter what issues or conflicts arise.  Free Expression and Academic Freedom : The ability to express oneself, to assert beliefs, and to dissent is fundamental to our university and our democracy. We each share a responsibility to foster an environment where divergent ideas can be discussed, examined, and challenged without infringing on others’ rights and safety.   As we transition to the fall semester, we remain committed to ensuring your rights to free speech, academic freedom, and peaceful protest in accordance with state and federal law. We expect you to follow the university’s rules and policies designed to support your rights and prevent disruption of university functions. We also are required by law to maintain a safe and bias-free environment in our classrooms, hospitals, events, and campuses. These values are essential to the Trojan community and do not conflict with free speech or academic freedom. The links below explain free expression and academic freedom, along with legal responsibilities and limitations. Time, Place, and Manner Rules for Free Expression at USC : USC has long-standing rules, guided by federal and state law, to ensure that everyone can participate fully in a bias-free, free speech academic and on-campus residential environment. These “time, place, and manner” limitations balance your right to express yourselves with the university’s responsibility to ensure the rights of all. These include long-standing rules banning encampments, damaging property, blocking access to campus and classrooms, doxing, harassment, and bullying (online or in person), as well as clear guidelines for protests of all sorts. Over the summer, we reviewed and clarified these policies. You should become familiar with this material, and the Student Commitment which all students were required to read and acknowledge before enrolling. The university will continue to enforce these rules fairly, consistently, and expeditiously, acting quickly to protect campus health and safety.  It always has been a Trojan Family value to be patient and respectful even in heated debates. By adhering to our highest standards, we will continue to maintain a culture of respect and dignity toward others. University Statements, Communication, and Accountability : Universities and their leaders often are asked to take sides on political, social, and moral issues. Yet, such statements can silence people, be seen as speaking for everyone, and lead to unintended consequences and seeming orthodoxies that stifle people’s rights of free speech. This runs counter to our responsibility to support viewpoint diversity, open and impartial debate, free speech, and safety in all aspects of university life. This understanding drove the Unifying Values written and adopted by the USC community in 2020, which include “fostering a community in which we solicit, embrace, and share diverse viewpoints.” In line with these ideas, going forward as individual leaders or on behalf of the university, we will not post statements or take sides in political or social debates unless it pertains directly to our institutional mission and operations. This posture, sometimes referred to as “institutional restraint or neutrality,” has been widely adopted by both public and private universities across America. Trojans Care for Trojans : Global conflicts, along with social and political unrest or transition, always prompt strong reactions and feelings at universities. We embrace our societal role and encourage Trojans to safely and freely express themselves. At the same time, we call on you to care for your fellow Trojans even if you strongly disagree on issues. Let’s embrace the expression “Trojans Care for Trojans.” By working together, we can create a university home for our Trojan Family that values differing opinions, cultivates open dialogue, supports one another, and seeks common ground in a complex world. We look forward to a great year with you.

Sports is undergoing rapid transformation and disruption that is generating unprecedented opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors, teams and leagues, and athletes and influencers.

Meeting this historic moment with innovation and academic leadership, USC Annenberg and USC Marshall are launching a new course that prepares students with a multi-disciplinary, 360-degree examination of the modern sports landscape, exploring intersections with business, media, technology, fan engagement, culture, and more.

Helming the class are Olympic gold medalist, head coach, and sportscaster Cheryl Miller ’86 and entrepreneur, educator, and Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship David Belasco ’85. Both USC alumni will leverage their expertise and USC’s unparalleled network to introduce students to the dynamic evolution of sports as both a commercial enterprise and a cultural force.

“The world of sports is a prism. Shine a light through it and you’ll see all aspects of contemporary life,” said Marshall Dean Geoff Garrett . “The new course will feature conversations with some of the most compelling figures in sports. Students will learn how to navigate and lead in an industry that continues to grow in both economic power and societal influence.”

Built around four main themes, “Power, Players, and Platforms in Global Sports” will leverage USC’s academic depth and breadth to examine (1) the business of sports; (2) platforms and broadcasting; (3) sports in culture; and (4) real-time analysis of topics such as the rise of women’s sports, performance and mindset, and the integration of artificial intelligence.

The course , co-listed as MOR-499 and JOUR-499, represents an ongoing partnership between USC Marshall and USC Annenberg to expand USC’s undergraduate sports curriculum and to develop the generation of diverse and inclusive professionals needed to advance the rapidly changing world of sports.

“Our students are hungry for more academic and professional pathways in sports industries, particularly sports media,” said USC Annenberg Dean Willow Bay . “This foundational new class will help equip them with the knowledge and perspective to shape the future of this dynamic and high-growth field.”

With its storied athletic heritage and home in Los Angeles, which boasts 12 professional teams and world-class venues like the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium, USC is uniquely positioned to provide unparalleled access to athletes, owners, journalists, executives, agents, and gamers. In each class, students will connect with these leaders across global sports for discussions spanning different aspects of the industry.

“No other university has USC’s access to the power players of sports. Being in L.A., the sports, media, and entertainment capital of the world, these leaders will be central to the classroom experience, offering expertise, insights, and hopefully internships and jobs,” Belasco said.

“I’m excited to share my years of broadcasting experience and knowledge with USC,” Miller added. “I look forward to engaging discussions with the students on the ever-changing landscape of sports and its industries.”

USC Undergraduate Research Associates Program

USC is one of only 146 Research I (RU/VH) universities among the 4,000 institutions of higher education in the United States. Undergraduate education at a research university offers special opportunities to students that are not available in other academic institutions. The ability to integrate research activities with professional and liberal education provides USC with a distinctive model of undergraduate education that sets us apart from other institutions.

The basic idea of learning as inquiry is the same as the idea of research. Even though advanced research generally occurs at the graduate level, undergraduates can also learn by performing research. In the sciences and social sciences, undergraduates can become junior members of the research teams that now engage professors and graduate students. In the humanities, undergraduates should have the opportunity to work with primary materials, perhaps linked to their professor’s research projects. As undergraduates advance through a program, their learning experiences should become closer and closer to the activity of the graduate student. By the senior year, the able undergraduate should be ready for research of the same character and roughly the same complexity as the first-year graduate student. The research university needs to make that zone of transition from senior to graduate student easy to enter and easy to cross. For those students who do not continue on to graduate school, the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems will prove invaluable in professional life and in citizenship. (Boyer Commission Report, 1998)

Providing support for collaborative research between undergraduate students and faculty members is best accomplished through approaches that blur the distinction between research and teaching. Such approaches should maximize faculty participation and enhance the learning experience of students.

The Undergraduate Research Associates Program is administered by the USC Office of Academic Programs. The goal of this program is to provide resources that enable faculty to integrate undergraduates into their scholarly and professional activities.

Faculty engaged in research with undergraduate students are invited to submit proposals to the Office of Undergraduate Education for additional funding by Thursday, February 22, 2024. The funding period covered by this Call for Proposals is July 2024 through June 2025. Student stipends will be disbursed by the Office of Academic Programs, and all stipend requests must be submitted by the end of the Spring 2025 semester. Students are encouraged to apply for multiple sources of funding (e.g. URAP, SOAR, SURF) but can only receive funding from one source in a given term.

Current Grant Period

Summer 2024 (July and August only), Fall 2024, Spring 2025, Summer 2025 (May and June only)

Application and Guidelines

Application process and deadline.

Proposals should be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Education no later than Thursday, February 22, 2024. The funding period covered by this Call for Proposals is July 2024 through June 2025 (funding requests due by the end of the Spring semester). Students are encouraged to apply for multiple sources of funding (e.g. URAP, SOAR, SURF) but can only receive funding from one source in a given term.

Complete proposals will include:

  • Faculty Proposal Application. (link to https://provost.sma.usc.edu/prog/urap )
  • Description of the research projects or collaborations in which the individual undergraduate students will participate.
  • Clear definition of the role of the undergraduate researcher(s), including the number of hours per week that students are expected to spend in the research. (For a semester stipend of $1,500, eight to ten hours per week for at least 10 weeks is typical. For a summer stipend of $3,000, twenty hours or more per week for at least eight weeks is typical.)
  • The process and criteria for selecting student researchers, which will assure that students who participate in these projects have demonstrated academic excellence, are well suited to the project structure and content, and will benefit academically from the experience.
  • Details regarding oversight and supervision by the proposing faculty.
  • Discussion of the integrative and/or group activities in which the undergraduate researchers will engage.
  • Nature of the final research report that will be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Education by each participating student(s).
  • Budget. (See the criteria noted in Guidelines)

Proposals are solicited from USC faculty in all disciplines to support undergraduate students as members of faculty research teams. Proposals may be submitted by individual faculty members or by groups. Limited funding may also be available as matching funds for departmental undergraduate research initiatives.

Projects may be proposed for individual students or for student teams. Within specific proposals, members of a faculty group may choose to work individually with students and share responsibility for the group components of the project (see below). Special consideration will be given to proposals that supplement existing external grants in order to support undergraduate researchers.

Funding is not provided for students registered in directed research courses, for graduate research assistants, or for projects in which undergraduate researchers will be supervised exclusively by graduate students.

  • Students will be paid in the form of research stipends, which are regarded as merit-based financial aid. The standard stipend for an academic semester is $1,500, assuming an average of eight to ten hours of student research per week. The standard summer stipend is $3,000, assuming an average of at least twenty hours of student research per week for at least eight weeks. Awards per proposal are limited to a maximum of $6,000 (limited to $3000 per student per academic year). Please note that students hired as undergraduate researchers in this program cannot simultaneously receive additional funding from the USC Provost’s Research Fellowship, Student Opportunities for Academic Research program (SOAR), or Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF).
  • The period covered by the current Call for Proposals is July 2024 through June 2025. Student stipends will be disbursed by the Office of Academic Programs, and all stipends must be paid by the end of the Spring 2025 semester. Faculty members who hire students for summer research (May and June 2025) must submit student information by the end of the Spring semester.
  • In addition to students’ individual involvement in research activities, projects should generally include some regular integrative or group activity. Examples of such activities are research seminars, colloquia, and participation in regional or national conferences. As part of their research experience, students are expected to receive training in ethical issues (e.g., human subjects training where appropriate) and in relevant forms of information retrieval and scholarly communication.
  • Each undergraduate research project should culminate with an appropriate report of the completed work (for example, a formal research paper, poster presentation, or similar demonstration of scholarly or creative accomplishments). All examples of student work should be submitted to the Office of Academic Programs before the end of the Spring 2025 semester. Failure to submit a research report will result in ineligibility for future funding.
  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 units in the upcoming Fall or Spring semesters.
  • Undergraduate students whose degrees have been posted are ineligible to receive URAP funds.
  • Progressive Degree students are ineligible to receive URAP funds.
  • All full-time students who receive financial aid must consult with their financial aid counselor before they agree in receiving a URAP payment. In addition, they must update their current address (with their apartment number) on MyUSC/OASIS at the beginning of the semester or the month prior working on a URAP project.

Funding Criteria

A faculty panel will review proposals and funding decisions will be made on the basis of the following criteria:

  • The quality of the proposed research project.
  • The level of educational benefit to the undergraduate research assistants.
  • Proposing faculty’s previous experience working with undergraduates, particularly in a research and/or collaborative environment.
  • The extent to which the project involves collaboration among faculty, particularly across academic units and/or disciplines.

Proposals that are project-based extensions of existing courses are not likely to be funded.

At least 90% of the project budget must be devoted to student research stipends.

At most 10% of the budget may be for materials and supplies.
