The pressure is on Tata and Messi to deliver MLS Cup this year with the former winning it with Atalanta United in the past, while Messi led Inter Miami to Leagues Cup glory just a few months after he arrived last summer and they also reached the U.S. Open Cup final but fell short to the Houston Dynamo.

Breaking down Messi's travel miles for Inter Miami and Argentina

When you think must-see events in 2024, what comes to mind? There's high demand for NFL tickets and the seismic draw of international pop singer Taylor Swift, to name just two, but equally hyped this year has been the chance to see a 5-foot-7 Argentine soccer player called Lionel Messi play soccer around the USA. And he's covering a lot of ground to make sure of it.

Swift's Eras Tour last year smashed several records -- including being the highest-grossing tour of all time -- and logs 23 different countries on five continents (total: 65,069 miles) over nearly 20 months. The Chiefs played 23 games (including preseason and postseason), including a date with the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany, on their way to another Super Bowl title, racking up over 28,000 miles along the way. However, when it comes to travel, Messi is simply built different.

In his first full year of a 2½-year contract with David Beckham's Inter Miami of Major League Soccer , the 36-year-old Argentine is in a unique economic and logistical predicament. Soccer players in Europe face a lot of travel -- especially if they play for teams that are competing in UEFA club competitions -- but Messi's schedule is next-level ridiculous. Not only is he playing across North America for his club -- MLS runs on a March to November schedule unlike in Europe, where Messi used to play, which would run from August to May and allow a little rest in the summer -- but he will also play in the Copa América for his national team, which is also being hosted in the United States.

The layering of major domestic travel -- Miami is in the extreme southeastern U.S., making it a long trip to most of its road games -- with his Argentina duties makes for a dizzying schedule as Messi looks to defend the Albicelestes' continental crown that they won in 2021.

Tickets to see Messi in the hot pink of Inter Miami on the road (up to $1,000 a ticket) or the sky blue and white of Argentina (Copa América group stage tickets average in the $300 range) have reached exorbitant prices. It's not without controversy, either: Messi has already missed a few games for club and country in 2024 due to injuries or rest -- the latter saw the Vancouver Whitecaps issue a statement before the game, causing disappointment for fans who spent more than 250 Canadian dollars ($180) to watch his magic up close.

Messi's not alone in having a grueling calendar: The likes of Jude Bellingham ( England ) and Vinícius Júnior ( Brazil ) will play on Saturday for Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund before jetting off to join their national teams and prepare for more high-level competitive soccer this summer ( Euros in Germany and Copa América in the United States). The Euro and Copa finals are both July 14; should either of their teams make it that far, they will receive only a brief respite before their club, Real Madrid, begins its preseason tour of the U.S. on July 31.

With changes coming to both the UEFA Champions League -- which begins its expanded Swiss model format, with 36 teams instead of 32, in 2024-25 -- and the 2026 World Cup growing from 32 teams to 48, we might well see wilder schedules for elite players in the future, too.

With Argentina the favorite to retain their Copa América trophy in the United States ( +175 odds at ESPN BET ) as well as Inter Miami becoming the favorite to win MLS Cup with their star-studded team ( +180 odds at ESPN BET ), Messi will rack up a lot of frequent flier miles. Let's look at just how exhausting this year could be for the GOAT.

Before the start of the MLS season, Inter Miami embarked on a preseason tour that nearly matched the circumference of the earth. They began their seven-game, 23,698-mile odyssey in El Salvador to play its national team before traveling back to the United States and then to Asia, making stops in Saudi Arabia -- though no reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo -- Hong Kong and Japan. Then they returned to Florida for their final warm-up game against Messi's boyhood club, Newell's Old Boys .

Not only was this tour controversial for its scale -- with Miami looking to cash in on the global marketability of its superstar, who has been joined by former Barca teammates Sergio Busquets , Jordi Alba and Luis Suárez -- but also for the first instance of Messi failing to appear. Fans in Hong Kong called for a refund after Messi sat out Feb. 4 because of an injury. It caused outrage -- average ticket prices were 4,880 Hong Kong dollars ($624) for a game in which he didn't feature -- and prompted even the Government of Hong Kong to express disappointment toward Messi's absence.

The situation further escalated when Messi was seen training in Japan before playing against Vissel Kobe three days later, which then led to Argentina's friendlies that were supposed to be scheduled the following month in China being canceled by the organizers . Messi would later speak out , blaming an adductor injury for sitting out the match in Hong Kong.

Nevertheless, in a span of 26 days, Inter Miami traveled through five different countries on two continents, clocking nearly 24,000 miles. And their season wouldn't begin for another week after their return to Fort Lauderdale from Tokyo.

Regular season

Traveling across the United States and Canada is never easy for a lot of MLS teams: Trips can be as short as 45 minutes (between the stadiums of New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls ) or as long as a six-hour flight (from Massachusetts, where the New England Revolution play, to the Vancouver Whitecaps). Messi completed a full round-the-world journey when Inter Miami went to face the LA Galaxy in February for just their second game of the MLS season, and despite missing six games since then -- including trips to Nashville (797 miles), New York City (1,067 miles) and Washington, D.C. (900 miles) -- he has still added over 14,000 miles to his 2024 tally in just three months.

The shortest trip Messi could potentially make would be 317 miles after their match away to the Columbus Crew (Oct. 2) to Canada for their match against Toronto FC . His longest Inter Miami trip of this year was that date with LA Galaxy, when he left Fort Lauderdale for Carson, California, on a 2,329-mile odyssey.

Then there are the games in which he didn't feature. The 2,786-mile trip to Vancouver ( and 2-1 win ) would have been his longest trip of the year had the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner made it on the plane; he also didn't feature in the 183-mile trip north to Orlando. If you want to see him in person, your best bet will be either a game in the eastern United States (away to NYCFC on Sep. 21) or at home at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale -- where Inter Miami have nine more regular-season games -- because of his international duties with Argentina.

If Messi suited up for every Miami game on the schedule, it would be an itinerary stretching to nearly 35,000 miles!

Playing for Argentina

While it will be an important year for Inter Miami as they look to win their first-ever MLS Cup -- they're leading the league after 16 matches and are odds-on favorites to win it all -- Messi will also look to play in what could be one of his last tournaments for Argentina.

After nearly two decades of service for his country, Messi delivered Argentina's first Copa América title since 1993 (beating Brazil 1-0 in 2021 ) and lifted his first FIFA World Cup (and his country's first since 1986) in an 18-month span. This summer, he'll try to make it back-to-back Copa América titles for Argentina, something they've done four times before.

Lucky for him, the Copa is being hosted in the U.S., and as defending champs with a base in south Florida, Argentina won't have to trek too much during the group stage as they go to Atlanta (vs. Canada ), East Rutherford, New Jersey (vs. Chile ), and Miami (vs. Peru ) -- that's 2,383 miles up and down the East Coast in three matches. Assuming they also win their group and make it all the way to the final, they would have a quarterfinal in Houston, a semifinal back in East Rutherford and then a final at the home of the Miami Dolphins -- another 4,000-plus miles added to the tally.

Don't expect things to cool off beyond that, either. Argentina go right into World Cup mode in September, with six qualifiers over three months during the business end of the MLS season. On the calendar: trips to Colombia , Venezuela and Paraguay . If Inter Miami qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs, Messi will travel at least 24,449 miles between the two continents, but that could be extended if Tata Martino's side makes a deep postseason run. The second leg of a potential MLS quarterfinal (Nov. 12) comes right before Argentina play a pair of games Nov. 14 and Nov. 19 in the World Cup cycle, with the MLS Eastern Conference semifinals beginning Nov. 25.

Bear in mind: This is one fairly typical season for Messi, though coming at the end of a distinguished 20-year career, it's clear that there is more strategy and planning used when it comes to when, and how, he gets some much-needed rest. While he's still performing at a high level -- 833 goals and counting, with 10 goals and 10 assists in just 855 minutes for Miami so far in 2024 -- you also look at the scale of how much bigger the travel times would've been.

Had Messi been able to travel to play in every single match this year for Inter Miami and Argentina, he would've clocked in 87,513 miles in total, or roughly 1,823 miles per trip -- nearly three times around the world in 2024. With the soccer calendar expanding, new tournaments popping up for clubs and national teams and a global fan base desperate to see the world's best, it's entirely possible someone surpasses Messi for mileage in the not-too-distant future.

Ever since the arrival of the man nicknamed "La Pulga," prices for a home match at Chase Stadium have skyrocketed .

Since the demand for tickets is so high, Inter Miami recommends using Ticketmaster or their official app to purchase tickets.

For instance, Inter Miami’s MLS match against the New York City FC on March 30 will cost you anywhere between $150 to $2,019 for a verified resale ticket, according to Ticketmaster .

The lowest tickets for this game are in the northeast grandstand which places you behind the corner flag, near the supporters' standing-only section.

Meanwhile the most expensive ticket, at $2,019, will sit you right on the front row near the half-line. Just watch out for those wayward tackles and loose soccer balls.

For Inter Miami’s game against Rayados de Monterrey for the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final, which are almost sold out, the cheapest ticket could come out at $125 for a verified resale ticket at the northeast grandstand, according to Ticketmaster.  

The most expensive ticket for that game? It's $1,130 and would also be down by the sideline in “ Field 1 and Field 3 ” which are just off the half-line and closer to each end.

There are more expensive options available, but at the time of this writing, all have been sold out and the information is not readily available.

For anyone wanting to go to an Inter Miami match, the parking situation can be a little hectic, but luckily, they offer plenty of space to park your cars, with seven available options depending on which direction of travel you are coming from.

Parking lots are reserved for pre-purchased parking passes and in case there is an overflow, extra spaces will become available, according to Inter Miami’s website.  

Starting off with the most common, the “Yellow Lot” is the closest match parking to the stadium and it’s only available to those coming from the north via Cypress Creek Boulevard and Northwest 10th Terrace.

There are five “Yellow Lots” available, but some will only open in the case of overflow.

The “Blue Lot” is another option for parking and there are two ways to get in. The first is the South Entry point which will only be available to those coming East on Commercial Boulevard.

The second entrance is the North Entry and it services those coming from both East and West on Cypress Boulevard.

The last lot is the “Green Lot” and is also for reserved parking. Inter Miami suggests those who are assigned this lot to use the North Entry, while the South Entry is only available for those coming East on Commercial Boulevard.

All tickets for pre-purchased parking costs $50, and the only way to pay for parking is through the app, which charges additional fees, according to Inter Miami’s parking vendor app, Fevo.

Where as last year at this same time, they only cost $30.

If you’re looking to buy an authentic Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets or any other players' jersey, be ready to dole out a whopping $194.99 plus taxes for an adult size, according to the MLS Store.  

If you wanted to bring your kids to the match and they don’t have anything to rep the team, you can purchase a customized or player name kids’ size jersey for just $114.99 plus tax, according to the MLS Store.

The replicas go for same prize, whether they are custom or not, but if you don’t care about the name in the back, then you can find a kids’ sized jersey for just $79.99 at the store.

The official team store is located near Gate 3, but you can also buy merchandise at the Fan Zone, Gate 1 and Gate 2.

CONCESSIONS

According to the Inter Miami website, there are 18 concession stands, 2 grab-and-go markets and 12 portable carts located through the stadium.

There are plenty of wide-ranging choices like Argentinian empanadas, Chicken Milanese sandwiches, tacos, and much more.

There are also several beer stands located around the stadium, but remember all alcohol sales end at the 70th minute mark, according to Inter Miami's website.

However, prices for food and beverage items are not readily available.

Inter Miami does have a policy that you cannot bring outside food or drinks into the stadium, so keep that in mind.

The cheapest available original standard tickets on Ticketmaster range from $40 (July 3 in Charlotte, NC) to $382 (October 2 in Columbus, OH). The lowest home game tickets available start at $100 for grandstand spots on three dates. Some dates have no original standard tickets left for sale. Most of the cheapest available tickets range from $100 to $200.

A rocky start both on and off the field has made the debut of Inter Miami challenging. But with the addition of Lionel Messi in summer 2023, the club has instantly become the most important and visible team in the league.

Where Can I Watch the Inter Miami Match?

All of Inter Miami’s matches can be found on MLS Season Pass , the league’s exclusive streaming platform. Games are available in English and Spanish (and French if playing a Canadian team). MLS Season Pass features every regular season, playoff, and Leagues Cup match – not only for Miami, but for the entire league.

Select league games are also featured on national TV on FOX or FS1, and you can bet MLS will heavily feature Messi and Miami in these games in the coming seasons.

For the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup , games can be found on multiple platforms. Some are streamed via Bleacher Report Football App and YouTube channel, some on US Soccer’s YouTube, and others have been featured on CBS Sports Golazo Network, which streams free on Pluto TV, and is also available within Paramount+ . 

Leagues Cup is available on MLS Season Pass, with select games on FOX and FS1. Spanish coverage on TV can be found on Univision, UniMás and TUDN. 

Should Miami qualify for CONCACAF Champions Cup , those games are shown on FS1, Univision, UniMás and TUDN.

inter Miami History

The origins of the franchise that would become Inter Miami can actually be traced all the way back to 2008. That year, local investor Marcelo Claure teamed with Spanish giants FC Barcelona for a bid to bring an MLS team to Miami. That bid would fail, with MLS awarding teams to Portland and Vancouver instead.

Claure would go on to be a minority investor in the next, even higher profile effort. On February 5, 2014, David Beckham and the league announced his intent to exercise his option to purchase a MLS franchise for $25 million. This deal for team ownership was a clause in Beckham’s contract when he signed with the LA Galaxy in 2007.

Four years later, in January 2018, the ownership group – which now included majority investor Jorge Más, was officially awarded the 25th MLS franchise. In September of that year, the club announced its name and badge. The choice of “Inter” as a name drew a trademark dispute with Inter Milan, who had registered a claim for its use in the US in 2014.

The league also announced a 2020 debut season for the Herons. There was one hangup though – they did not have a stadium secured. Four different stadium sites in and around downtown Miami were proposed, but faltered. Finally, a site adjacent to Miami International Airport was tentatively approved, but would not be ready in time for 2020.

Like their MLS predecessors in the region, the Miami Fusion (1998-2001), Inter Miami began play 30-some miles up the road in the city of Fort Lauderdale. On the same site, in fact. In Spring 2019, the team was awarded a 50-year lease to redevelop the site of Lockhart and Fort Lauderdale Stadiums. The home of the Fusion, NASL’s Fort Lauderdale Strikers and many international games was torn down to make way for a new 18,000 seat temporary venue and training center for Inter Miami. The plan was to play the 2020 and 2021 seasons there and then move down to Miami Freedom Park in 2022.

However, as of June 2023, ground has yet to be broken on the Miami project thanks to various delays. So the near term future of the club, including potentially all of Messi’s tenure, will take place in Fort Lauderdale.

On the field, things haven’t been much easier. The 2020 debut season was postponed after just two matches due to the COVID-19 pandemic, days before the club’s first ever home game. The team did make the special play-in round of the MLS Cup playoffs in it’s first season, but lost 3-0 to fellow expansion side Nashville.

The sub-par start resulted in the sacking of first manager Diego Alonso. In addition, it was found that the team violated league roster rules in 2020. The club was hit with fines and sanctions for the next two seasons as a result. Phil Neville was appointed managed in early 2021, but the new gaffer did not improve results. The team finished in 20th place overall and missed the playoffs.

The year 2022 did see an uptick in performance, as the team won their most games to date, finishing 12th, and made the playoffs, but lost in the first round. A terrible start to the 2023 league campaign led to the firing of Neville as manager on June 1. Just days later, Lionel Messi announced his intent to sign with the club, changing the trajectory of the organization forever. Miami would go on to win the Leagues Cup, but fall in the U.S. Open Cup Final and miss the MLS Cup Playoffs in Messi’s first year.

As you travel South toward the stadium, please have your digital parking pass open and visible to traffic personnel for seamless traffic flow towards the parking entrance. Follow the parking attendants directions for navigation through the lot.

Be certain that the digital “Reserved” Yellow Lot parking pass to be shown to traffic personnel has the QR code showing and is Yellow in color. (Email confirmation is NOT accepted)

Chase Stadium has additional overflow parking lots accessible from East or West on Commercial Blvd. and NW 21st Avenue. Follow NW 21st Avenue North and turn right on South Perimeter Road to the parking lot entrance. License plate enforcement will be used and strictly enforced. Violators will be ticketed and/or towed.

There is also a lot located on 1110 W Commercial Blvd and accessible from the East or West on Commercial Blvd. and south on 15th Avenue. The alternative entrance is South on Secondary south on 21st and East on NW 49th.

Overflow lots will open as other lots become unavailable. Arrive early to ensure the closest available parking space.

BLUE LOT (RESERVED - Pre-Purchased passes only)

Chase Stadium “Reserved” Blue parking lot is accessible from the suggested route from the South Side of the Stadium through (Commercial Blvd. and NW 15th Avenue).

South Entry ( ONLY AVAILABLE IF COMING EAST ON COMMERCIAL) - As you travel West on Commercial Blvd to NW 15th Avenue toward the stadium, have your digital parking pass open and visible to traffic personnel for seamless access to NW 15th Avenue. Follow NW 15th Ave North to parking lot entrance on NW 55th Street and follow the parking attendants directions for navigation through the lot. Please note that ONLY right turns will be allowed onto NW 15th Avenue from Commercial Boulevard traveling Westbound.

You will be asked to show your pass several times along the route until you park.

As you travel toward the stadium, please have your digital parking pass open and visible to traffic personnel and move to the far RIGHT lane. Turn right at NW 55th Street (just past the S curve in road) and follow the parking attendants directions for navigation through the lot.
