Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with family vacations at sea, so you might think that every Disney cruise in 2024 will be a good choice for families. And having sailed on every one of Disney’s cruise ships myself, I can say the simple answer is yes, that’s absolutely true. But some Disney cruise experiences hold an extra special place in my family’s heart, and they’ve made me realize that certain Disney cruises can go above and beyond even DCL’s usual family-friendly standard.

I’m thinking about when we met Disney’s Frozen friends in person on a Norway sailing, or laughed to tears over dinner with Crush the Sea Turtle (“cha dude!”), or completed a 5K with my daughter on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay . That’s why my picks for the best Disney cruises for families in 2024 are all about these kinds of extra special experiences, the ones that aren’t just the usual level of Disney cruise line magic but will elevate your family vacation into once-in-a-lifetime “cherished family memory” territory.

The Best Disney Cruises for Families in 2024

There will be no shortage of these kinds of opportunities on Disney Cruise Line (DCL) in 2024. From being among the first to visit Disney’s brand-new private island destination to enjoying an immersive Pixar-themed day at sea to setting sail on the maiden voyage of Disney’s newest ship , here are the Disney cruise experiences I think will go above and beyond in 2024.

1. Disney Magic to Lighthouse Point, DCL’s Newest Private Island Destination

One thing my family looks forward to during any Disney cruise is a stop at DCL’s private island, Castaway Cay. In 2024, Disney Cruise Line will unveil its second private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. And I can’t wait to see how they plan to outdo the already incredible Castaway Cay experience.

Similar to when Disney created its Aulani resort in Hawaii , Disney Imagineers have been working with local artists and cultural experts to design an authentic Bahamian island experience at Lighthouse Point. Curvilinear buildings are meant to evoke scattered seashells along the shore, and a Bahamian Art and Culture Pavilion will feature special programs and local artists that celebrate Bahama traditions.

When my youngest daughter graduated from high school, my wife and I asked where she wanted to go for our family vacation to celebrate her milestone . Her top choice was Alaska. But that’s not all the Disney Wonder gets up to! In 2023, Disney also began offering Australia and New Zealand cruises onboard the ship, and that will continue in 2023 and 2024. Disney Cruise Line has announced a new season of sailings in the region from October 2024 through February 2025.

The Disney Wonder is one of DCL’s original class of ships, and with a capacity of 2,713 passengers it remains one of the line’s most intimate vessels. That’s a reason to love it. I love Disney’s Castaway Cay and have enjoyed so many relaxing stops to the island. I especially remember learning the “stingray shuffle” and holding stingrays during Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure. The Disney Wish is DCL’s newest ship (for now), debuting in July 2022 and offering  three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Florida . The close proximity of Port Canaveral to Walt Disney World makes it easy to combine an Orlando theme park vacation with a Disney Cruise.

In my review for FamilyVacationist, I called it an “ overflowing toy box of fun ” and I’m excited for more families to experience it on a Disney cruise in 2024. The cruise was packed with so many Pixar character meets, themed-activities, special shows, foods, and treats that some of it spilled into additional days at sea. In 2024, Pixar Day at Sea returns to the Disney Fantasy  on seven-night Caribbean sailings from January through March.

Disney’s themed cruise days aren’t limited to Pixar, either. There’s a Marvel Day at Sea on five-night Disney Dream cruises departing Fort Lauderdale from January through March, and when the festive season rolls around most of the ships offer holiday sailings with  Halloween on the High Seas  and  Very Merrytime cruises.

I was so impressed with the Halloween tree in the ship’s atrium when my family sailed on a Halloween cruise. Over the course of the cruise, the tree “bloomed” with spooky Jack-o-lanterns. In addition, Disney characters were decked out in costumes, there was trick-or-treating, and other special activities. And of course Very Merrytime cruises have a tree-lighting ceremony, Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party, carolers, special drinks and treats, and appearances by the guest of honor for the cruise, Santa Claus.

7. Disney Treasure Sets Course for Adventure

Last but not least, Disney Treasure joins the Disney Cruise Line fleet with its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. Adventure is the theme for Disney’s sixth cruise ship with spaces and entertainment inspired by Aladdin , Coco , Zootopia , Jungle Cruise , even 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

As a fan of the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise ride and Skipper Canteen restaurant, I can’t wait to get immersed in the kitschy 1930s adventure vibe onboard the Disney Treasure . It adds convenience while taking care of practical vacation elements, like payment, online check-in, and trip modifications. This is also your go-to for pre-registering for Disney Cruise Line’s wide range of activities and keeping tabs on the daily schedule, which includes showtimes and deck parties. You can also communicate with your family and other cruise-goers for free using the app.

And don’t miss out on this convenient notification feature: “Scroll through the daily activity schedule to look for entertainment options that interest you, and be sure to click the heart icon next to any listings you don't want to miss,” planDisney panelist Adrianna Hwang tells Travel + Leisure . “If you've enabled notifications for the app, you'll receive a reminder about 15 minutes before the activity will begin. It's a really helpful feature when you lose track of time relaxing by the pool!” 

This is especially important if character meet-and-greets are a priority for you. “The Disney Cruise Line Navigator app will list character appearance times and locations so that you can be sure to catch your favorite Disney characters on board,” Hwang adds. “If you select the specific character listed in the Daily Activity Schedule within the app, you'll even see the full schedule of times to meet them throughout the cruise so that you can plan accordingly.” Hwang suggests arriving at the greet locations at least five to 10 minutes early.

Use your Castaway Club perks to book extras early. 

If you’re looking to book extras, like shore excursions and elevated dining experiences, your booking window depends on your loyalty to Disney Cruise Line. The Castaway Club is Disney’s version of a frequent cruiser program, and sailors earn status based on the number of sailings they’ve been on. Higher status translates to earlier booking windows, so Disney Cruise Line loyalists can score their desired bookings first.

Plan to exchange your currency onboard.

Not only does Disney Cruise Line take no commission for exchanging bills , but they'll actually honor the transaction's rate of exchange for any leftover money. Simply present your receipt prior to the end of the cruise, and they'll convert your foreign currency back to your preferred denomination at the same rate, even if the exchange rate has since changed. (Note: This only applies to bills, not coins, and there is no ATM on board.)

Bring a reusable water bottle. 

While there are water fountains and bottle refill stations on board, they can be far away from your room — and disposable bottles (not included in the fare) can add up. The tap water in each room is drinkable, but sinks are often too small to accommodate big bottles. You can bring packs of bottled water, but you'll have to carry it through embarkation — it cannot be packed with luggage — so consider bringing refillable bottles or tumblers.

Thought you knew everything there was to know about the Fab Five? Wait until you see them in their exclusive Disney Cruise Line wardrobe. Goofy, Donald, Daisy, Mickey, and Minnie wear special outfits for Pirate Night, and they also tailor their outfits to where the ship is headed that day. On Alaska sailings, expect to meet Mickey in fisherman's overalls and Minnie in a fur-lined coat; on trips through the Mediterranean Sea, Goofy dons an Italy-inspired suit. Specialty characters are also known to show up from time to time, like Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle appearing as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus during the spooky season.

Aspiring princesses won’t want to miss the Royal Gathering.

The Royal Gathering is your chance to meet and greet with Disney royalty, like Tiana and Cinderella, all at one time and place. It’s offered on most cruise itineraries but there is a catch: while tickets are free, they are required to attend. “Complimentary tickets to the Royal Gathering are available to be booked online or through the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app or Disneycruise.com 30 days before your sail date,” Hwang adds. “Take this experience to the next level for your little one by reserving a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover an hour or two before the Royal Gathering begins.” 

And know that the most memorable character experiences won’t be at meet-and-greets.

The lines to meet Mickey and Minnie are (amazingly!) short on Disney Cruise Line, but favorites like Daisy Duck are known to freely wander the pool and jogging track decks, playfully surprising guests and often sharing elevator rides for a once-in-a-lifetime interaction. Don't miss the character dance parties either, which allow kids and adults to line dance with Goofy and shake it off with Donald Duck for an experience that goes beyond a hug and photograph.

Order whatever you’d like to eat — and as much as you’d like. 

Disney Cruise Line’s dinnertime meal service operates on a rotating restaurant schedule, so you'll get to enjoy each restaurant the ship offers — and some more than once on longer sailings. These highly themed restaurants, like Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure on the Disney Wish , offer pre-fixe dinner menus. Torn between two entrees? Order them both. Each of your ship’s included rotational dining restaurants comes with a fixed three-course option that is all-you-care-to-enjoy.

Splurge on specialty dining. 

Standard dining is fantastic, but Disney ships also have adults-only restaurants available at an extra charge. Depending on your ship, this could include the French-focused Remy or fan-favorite Palo. While Remy and Enchante can be pricey, you can enjoy Palo for as little as $50. 

And on the Disney Wish , you won’t want to miss its newest iteration, Palo Steakhouse. “If you've sailed with Disney before, you may be familiar with Palo, but on the Wish , Palo Steakhouse is even better,” Heather Peggs, a Disney travel expert with Castle Bound Travel Company, shares with T+L. “I highly recommend trying the A5 wagyu steak, which is about a fifth of the price it would be off the ship, and it's absolutely phenomenal!”

These upgraded dining experiences are known to book up well in advance, but there is occasionally a waitlist available for canceled and missed reservations. “If you can't snag a reservation before the cruise, inquire in person on the day you embark,” Hwang adds. “Look for the activity listed as ‘Dining Reservation Changes’ to speak with a crew member about reservation availability.” 

Request the best seat in the house at dinner. 

Always dreamed of sitting by the stage at Tiana's Place on the Disney Wonder or enjoying dinner in those gorgeous Enchanted Garden booths on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy ? Well, it's not entirely luck of the draw. Nothing is guaranteed, but requests for a certain table can always be added to your Disney Cruise Line reservation, and they are worth the extra phone call. Concierge guests can make seating requests to their Concierge Service Specialist before boarding as well. You never know when Disney will sprinkle a little extra magic onto your vacation.

And don’t miss the best dinner entertainment.

The dinner show at Animator's Palate is a highlight if you’re sailing on the Magic, Wonder, Dream, or Fantasy, but it's the second visit to that dining room that can't be skipped. It's called Animation Magic, and guests get to draw their own characters and see them come to life on the screens mid-meal. The incredible display is only offered on longer sailings on the Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy, so make sure you don’t skip it. Even better? Request that your rotation allows two visits to Animator's Palate that don't overlap with Pirate Night to ensure you enjoy the show.

Grab a free soda at this spot.

Soda is included during sit-down meals, but if you’re craving a thirst quencher outside of those times, go to the free-flowing beverage stations near the pools on each Disney ship.

Sip cocktails at this favorite bar. 

There are plenty of themed watering holes in the adults-only areas of the ships, but on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy , Meridian is the place to be. The upscale bar and lounge is located next door to Palo and Remy, but it is open to all adults adhering to its business casual dress code. Though known for its martinis, Meridian also offers a cigar bar, custom craft cocktails, and a gin and tonic cart, as well as a private deck hosting a picture-perfect view of nightly sunsets.

Star Wars : Hyperspace Lounge is a bar exclusively found on the Disney Wish . “Whether you’re an avid Star Wars fan or just want to explore the galaxy, you will be able to enjoy delicious alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages that are simply out of this world,” adds Peggs. Reservations are no longer required, but there might be a wait, especially during peak hours; visit when the ship is in port to avoid the crowds. During the day, guests of all ages are allowed in.

It’s a multi-sensory experience in this immersive, interactive venue, and you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled in case anyone orders the $5,000 Kaiburr Crystal cocktail.  

Save on drinks during happy hour at sea. 

Be sure to check the Navigator app for daily happy hours at different bars and lounges. The exact offers vary, but they can include deals like half-off draft beer and discounts on specialty cocktails. And if you’re looking to take your cocktail knowledge to the next level, cruises also offer add-on mixology classes and tasting experiences.

Ask about the Sommelier Bin for discounted wine. 

Once a bottle of wine is opened, Disney must serve it (in its entirety) that day. Because of this, Disney ships have a sommelier bin, with opened bottles of wine served by the glass at highly discounted rates. This is your chance to sip on otherwise pricey pours at a bargain price. Now that’s Disney magic.

Or B.Y.O.B. to save money.

Looking to save a few bucks? While Disney ships offer a bevy of specialty cocktails, you can bring your own drinks — with some limitations. Hard liquor is a no-go, but each cruiser 21 years of age and up can bring two bottles of wine (or six-packs of beer) on board with them. If you’re thinking of bringing that bottle of wine with you to dinner, be aware that Disney does charge a corkage fee. You can also bring sealed bottles of water on board with you.

Take a second look at that barbershop on the Disney Wish .

Hook’s Barbery may look like any old upscale barbershop when walking by — but it’s hiding one of the best-kept secrets aboard any Disney ship. Tucked away within the salon is a hidden speakeasy-style bar serving expertly crafted cocktails, including a smoked old fashioned. Its liquor selection is extensive and surprising with rare and vintage pours.

Snack on soft serve on and off the ship.

If you’re a frequent Disney cruiser, you’re probably familiar with the line’s free-flowing soft-serve ice cream. And if the craving strikes when visiting Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, you’ll be glad to know it’s also available on the island for the ultimate sugar rush in the sun.

Get an extra-magical coffee. 

Few can resist a Mickey-shaped treat while visiting any Disney property, but the best mouse-themed treat on the ships can be found at Cove Cafe . Order a cappuccino, ask for Mickey's face on it, and prepare to enjoy your jolt of caffeine with some extra magic. It'll cost a few bucks, but the joy of sipping a “Mickeyccino” will always outshine the complimentary coffee served on board.

You’ll be glad to know that, unlike other cruise lines, Disney Cruise Line’s room service is completely free and offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The best part? You can have an iconic Disney treat, the Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar, delivered directly to your room.

Book early if you plan to use the ship’s nursery.

Bookings open early for guests looking to take advantage of the onboard nursery. Available for an extra charge, the It’s a Small World Nursery is available to supervise your child ages six months to three years old, ideal if you’d like a quiet dinner or time to explore one of the ship’s many themed lounges without the little one in tow. And don’t forget — the other youth clubs for kids, tweens, and teens are absolutely free.

Every Disney ship has a Vibe , an onboard youth club that is exclusively available for teens ages 14 to 17. There is supervision, of course, and Disney Cruise Line's famously fun activities, but it's practically a private resort for high schoolers to chill in all day and night — no parents allowed.

Explore the kids clubs during the open house. 

Activities at the Marvel Super Hero Academy and Star Wars : Millennium Falcon play areas are reserved for young ones, but all kids club spaces empty out for the open house, when anyone can wander in and check out Vibe's arcade games or Oceaneer Lab's high-tech designs. Don't skip out on Andy's Room, which brings Toy Story to life while making for incredible Instagram snaps. And you won’t want to miss a multi-level slide on the Disney Wish which takes you from floor to floor in the ship’s soaring lobby. “Little ones can get comfortable with and excited about areas where they will play without their grownups,” shares Hwang.

Join a secret community of friends — hiding in plain sight.

Ever seen those homemade decorations hanging beside neighbors' doors? They're called fish extenders, and they're used by a network of families who have packed small gifts, treats, and trinkets to exchange with each other throughout their trip. There are also lots of activities to take advantage of on board. “I must say I'm a huge fan of staying on board even on port days to explore the array of classes, Broadway-caliber shows, and, of course, the games,” adds Peggs. “If you're looking for family-friendly options, a couple of my favorites are Bingo, which they have every day during your sailing, napkin and towel folding, bar trivia, and so much more!”

Don’t miss the musicals.

While it may be tempting to take advantage of quieter swim times in the evening, you won’t want to miss your ship’s musical offerings. Broadway-quality productions including “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” (exact offerings depend on the ship) are a must-see. “These are beautifully done and are wonderful for the entire family,” Peggs adds. “Plus, if you purchase a popcorn bucket at the beginning of the cruise, you will be able to enjoy $1.50 refills for the remainder of your cruise!”

There’s an under-the-radar design tour.

Adults 18 and up can enjoy one of the cruise line’s best walking tours. “The Art of The Theme Show Tour gives adults an insightful look into the detailed and thoughtful design of several spaces throughout the ship,” adds Hwang. “It's usually offered in the mornings and provides some fun trivia to share with anyone in your party.” 

Unwind at the spa.

You’re on vacation — it’s time to pamper yourself in the state-of-the-art spa. “If you are interested in booking a spa treatment, attend the open house before the ship sets sail,” Peggs shares. “You might get lucky and win a voucher for 10% off or possibly a facial or massage during the raffle. Speaking of savings, the more spa services you get while on board, the better the price will be. If you want to secure a spa day/week pass, be sure to book them sooner rather than later as they sell out pretty quickly!”

After a short heartwarming performance, loads of Disney characters, princesses, and theater performers will disperse throughout the crowd, posing for photos on a first-come, first-served basis. The onboard photographers will have already shut down, so you can snap as many iPhone pictures as you'd like, making for a full album in one fell swoop. Let's start by covering the details of how Disney Cruise costs are calculated between room pricing and cost per person. 

Disney Cruise Room Pricing

All Disney Cruise costs are priced based on two adults in the stateroom (room on the ship). This means that one adult traveling with a child (ages 3-12) is the same price as two adults (13 and up) in the room. Children ages 0-2 pay 50% of the child rate.

After the two adult prices, the third and fourth passengers in the stateroom are charged a lower rate. If you are traveling alone, Disney Cruise Line will charge you 100% of the second adult’s cruise fare (not including port fees and taxes) in addition to the full fare for the first adult.

Which Disney Cruise Should I Do?

The first couple of factors to consider when deciding to book a Disney Cruise and cost are where you want to go and what ship you want to sail on.

Disney Cruise Ships

Disney currently has 6 signature cruise ships with more on the way.

The newest cruise ship available right now is the Disney Wish, but the Disney Treasure begins sailing in December of 2024, and it is almost time to start booking!

Each Disney ship is decked out from bow to stern in immersive Disney experiences. The experiences are going to differ depending on the ship, where it is sailing to, and if it is a themed expedition or not.

Disney Cruise Cost Factors

There are a few factors that will impact the cost of a Disney Cruise like time of year, location of the cruise, plus the Disney Cruise ship chosen.

Time of the year

Disney prices their cruises based on peak seasons. The more in-demand the cruise sailings are, the higher the pricing.

The first peak season is the most expensive. Think about when children are out of school, June – August. There is an increase in demand for ships and sailings, so the pricing also goes up. Alaska, and the Caribbean, are usually priced high during this time. Europe and the Panama Canal are usually only offered during these peak seasons.

Holidays are another popular peak season. The Bahamas and the Caribbean are going to be more expensive during these times because families will want shorter cruises, which are offered to these two locations.

Off-season bookings will be cheaper, but keep in mind, that the weather may not be as cooperative depending upon the location you are sailing to.

When choosing locations for your cruise, a cruise to the more remote destination Alaska is going to cost more than sailing to the Bahamas from Florida.

Europe and the Panama Canal are usually only offered in the summer, which can drive up the price of the cruise.

When deciding on what you want out of your cruise, guests can choose from different night lengths.

Disney currently offers cruises in 1-3, 4, 5-6, 7 8-13, or 14+ lengths. The longer you cruise, the more expensive the cruise is going to be because more amenities are included and paid for in the cruise cost.

Specialty Cruises

Disney offers specialty cruises throughout the year. Each of these specialty cruises is going to include extra events, entertainment, dining specialties, and more that are factored into the higher costs.

Guests can book a Pixar Day at Sea, Marvel Day at Sea, Halloween High Seas, and Holiday-themed cruises.

Stateroom type

There are four different types of staterooms guests can book on the cruise ships. A stateroom is the cruise equivalent of your hotel room.

The most luxurious accommodations on the cruise and the most expensive. Each room has a large private verandah (balcony) and premium amenities and services included. Prices for this type of hotel room will be the most expensive out of all rooms on the ship costing upwards of $6,000 for a trip.

The most spacious non-concierge staterooms are in the Verandah category. Each room comes equipped with a private verandah (balcony), some with partial views of the ship and ocean. The space and balcony are worth the price increase if you are sailing on a longer cruise. This category is the second most expensive type of room to choose from and also tends to sell out the quickest. Pricing tends to start around the $3500 total mark for most cruise lengths and destinations. 

The oceanview room has more space than an inside room and also includes a porthole or two to be able to see the ocean. This is a great middle price on the cruise where you can still see the ocean passing by, but you don’t have the balcony to walk out on. This type of room falls in the middle pricing category. The cheapest cruises will come in around $2800 total but can go much higher depending on the length and destination.

The base accommodations feature no outside viewing as the rooms are on the inside of the ship. However, Disney provides a scenic porthole display of different images to make it not feel as claustrophobic. These will be the absolute cheapest rooms due to not having an actual window or balcony. If you want to go on a Disney cruise, but your family is on a strict budget, these rooms will be the cheapest, averaging around the $2,000 – $4,000 range. 

Transportation To Port

By far the biggest factor that will vary for each family going on a Disney cruise is the transportation to the Departing Port.

You will need to provide your own flight, take a train, or drive to the port that you are leaving from. This cost is going to vary widely depending on where you live versus where you need to leave from.

We also recommend arriving the day before the cruise is set to depart so there are no delays in boarding the ship at your arrival time. This is going to cost a night at a nearby hotel, which adds to the overall budget for your cruise.

Certain cruises only depart from specific locations. You can filter this when you are searching to book your cruise.

When planning your destinations for your cruise, it is helpful to know where you are going to sail from. The majority of the Bahamas and Caribbean cruises are going to leave from the two ports in Florida, but they also depart from Texas. The Alaskan cruises sail from Vancouver, Canada.

The cheapest way to book transportation is to filter the cruises by which port is closest to you and see which destinations are available. Or, you can filter by destination and then see which ports are the closest to you to help keep costs down.

Keep in mind that if you drive to the port, this will be an additional cost to park your car at the port as well. The fee will be nightly similar to an airport.

What is Included in the Disney Cruise Cost Base Price?

A big question is what do I get for the price tag I see on the Disney Cruise Line website?

When booking your Disney Cruise, you are not just paying for a hotel room like many other vacations. You are paying for an all-inclusive Disney Experience . For every Disney Cruise booked, you can expect the following accommodations, activities, and amenities.

What is Not Included in a Disney Cruise?

While Disney Cruises is great at including a lot of amenities in the total trip cost, there are a few extras that you may want while sailing on your ship.

• Premium desserts
• Premium coffee (at the Cove cafe)
• Meals at the adult-only Palo and Remy
• Gratuities – can be prepaid
• Wireless Internet Access
• Baby Nursery (6 months -3 years)

All of these items should be considered when pricing out your Disney Cruise so that you do not have any unexpected costs.

Menus for restaurants are available on the Disney Cruise Line Website, so you can see if you want to eat somewhere not included in the base price.

Port Excursions are also booked ahead of time, so you can prepay these items and include them in the final cost of your cruise.

Gratuities Explained

On a cruise ship, it is customary to give gratuities in recognition of exceptional service. Disney recommends a gratuity amount of $14.50 USD per night, per stateroom Guest, including infants and children or $15.50 USD per night, per stateroom Guest for concierge and suites.

Pre-Paid Gratuities are distributed to the Crew Members who take care of you in the following roles:

• Dining room server
• Dining room assistant server
• Dining room head server
• Stateroom host

Easily pre-pay gratuities online to create a carefree, all-inclusive experience by visiting My Reservations in your Disney account and following the prompts for Pre-Paid Gratuities. If you do not pre-pay before boarding the ship, Disney automatically charges your onboard account the suggested gratuity amount. Once on the ship, you can adjust the amount of your Pre-Paid Gratuities by visiting Guest Services prior to the end of your cruise.

Pre-Paid Gratuities do not include the following gratuities, which are either included in the charge or based on your discretion:

• Extras added to rotational dining meals such as alcoholic beverages
• Adult dining locations such as Remy, Palo, Palo Steakhouse and Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement, which are not part of rotational dining
• Food or drink in shops and outdoor or poolside eateries
• Room service

Breakdown of Pricing

This section of our article is going to take a look at the specific pricing of specific cruises to help estimate Disney Cruise cost. The three most popular Disney Destinations are the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Alaska, so that is what pricing we are going to focus on.

Disney Cruise On a Budget

If you really want to go on a Disney Cruise and stick to a budget, the 3-night and 4-night cruises are going to be the best option. Depending on how far from your destination you are traveling, the amount of time on the ship versus in a port will vary. The Bahamas destinations are going to offer more time in ports where Caribbean cruises will be more time on the boat.

The cheapest room option on a cruise is always the interior room. However, these rooms don’t have actual windows and can make a very tight space for a family of four, which we are basing all of our pricing on. If possible, spring for at least an Oceanview room where you are guaranteed at least one actual window.

Another way to stay on budget is to adjust the dates. In the tables below, you will see different dates and different ships will provide cheaper options. Cruises during February, August, and September tend to be cheaper, similarly to a Walt Disney World Vacation, whereas cruises during holiday seasons (Spring Break, Christmas, New Years, Halloween, etc.) are going to be more expensive.

Mid-Range Disney Cruise Pricing

A 5 – 6 day cruise is a great mid-price range budget. Typically with these cruises you will have enough time to explore the ship while also getting at least two, if not three days in a port of call to explore your destination.

For the longer 5-6 day cruises, we recommend the oceanview or verandah rooms. To keep the budget down and get to experience more for your money, avoid booking the concierge rooms at these middle price points.

Another great way to spend your money is to book one of the themed cruises. Guests can book the Marvel Day at Sea, a Halloween Cruise, or a Merry Christmas Cruise. The prices are going to be higher for these themed cruises even if they are only 5-6 days long, but you get a lot more special activities.

The longer cruise you book, the more ports you can stop at and the greater chance you have to stretch your days at sea to fully explore all that the ship has to offer.

The longer the cruise, guests can also experience more themed Disney nights and formal nights as well. This can make the cruise an extra special vacation due to all of the extra magic you are receiving.

Our recommendation for rooms on a cruise any longer than 5 days is to book at least a verandah room if not the concierge rooms. This is going to provide the most space for the times when you need to escape from the hustle and bustle of the ship.

In addition to the longer cruise, specialty cruises can also be booked during peak times if you don’t have an incredibly restrictive budget.

"Good Morning America" got an early look at what to expect aboard the new vessel, which is set to make its maiden voyage in November 2025 from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

From a first-of-its-kind Pride Lands dining experience inspired by the unforgettable music of "The Lion King" to an exclusive confectionary inspired by "The Incredibles," the Disney Destiny takes a page from an array of legends and legacies.

Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Lines, said in a press release that "guests aboard our new ship will be surrounded by extraordinary storytelling paired with the signature service and family-fun adventures that are hallmarks of a Disney Cruise vacation."

Family of the day and magical family

How do families get be pick to be family of the day and first on the Disney cruise ship during the check in at cruise terminal port. Also how families pick to be magical families on the Disney cruise ship.  I'm Saving to go on the 7-Night Western Europe Cruise from Southampton on September 1st to September 8th 2024 and staying in 1 bedroom suite stateroom concierge with myself mum. This would our second disney  cruise but the first Disney dream cruise ship on 7-Night Western Europe Cruise from Southampton, since our  first cruise on  Disney Magic 7-Night British Isles Cruise from Dover:  from September 11th to September 18th 2022 witch also stayed in an one bedroom suite concierge stateroom.

Someone in the terminal scouts out the guests before boarding begins and selects a family for Family of the Day.  No way of knowing who it's going to be.

Don't know about "Magical Family", never heard of that one.

Alfonso Ribeiro Says 'I Didn't Think I Would Enjoy' a Disney Cruise, But Admits He Had a Blast (Exclusive)

The Dancing with the Stars host took a multigenerational family trip on the intimate, eight-day Adventures by Disney river cruise

Alfonso Ribeiro was in for a surprise when he set off on a unique cruise this summer! 

In the beginning of August, the Dancing with the Stars host, 52, embarked on an intimate, eight-day River Rhine Cruise by Adventures by Disney with nine of his family members for a multigenerational vacation. The group included Alfonso, his wife Angela Unkrich , his youngest three children — sons Alfonso "AJ" Lincoln, 10, and Anders Reyn, 9, and daughter Ava Sue, 5 — his parents and his in-laws. 

When it came to agreeing to the excursion, which makes stops in Strasbourg, France; Rüdesheim, Germany; Amsterdam and more, Alfonso tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that he needed a bit of convincing.

"Everybody was on board and I was like, 'All right, I guess if y'all want to do it, I'll go do it.' And then I ended up really enjoying it," he admits.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum shares, "[I] didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. It was kind of a shock. But I really, really enjoyed it. It was really a fun time. The kids really loved it [ and] my wife loved it." The cruise even got the stamp of approval from his mother, who told him, "This was really one of my nicest vacations I've ever been on."

Unlike Disney's large ocean cruise ships, Alfonso's voyage was on a smaller ship that only holds about 150 guests, allowing the crew to offer more personalized service.

Alfonso describes his time on board as "really intimate, really cozy," noting, "It's the same as a normal river cruise, except Disney elevates it big time."

Speaking about the Adventure Guides and experts on the boat, the America's Funniest Home Videos host says that they arranged nearly every part of his vacation. "So there's completely nothing you need to do. They've got all the excursions planned," he explains. 

His favorite stop was in Strasburg, which is a small town in northeastern Germany. The itinerary for this part of the River Rhine Cruise includes a tour of the city on a Batorama canal boat.

The actor also enjoyed a sight-seeing excursion during which the guests gathered on the top deck of the boat and watched like "50 castles along the river." He says, "By this point, you've created friends, there other parents or other families that are all hanging out. So everyone's on the top deck, and there was wine and cheese. It was just beautiful."

Other adventures offered on the trip, according to Adventures by Disney include riding a toboggan and learning how to make wooden pipes, visiting a medieval village, exploring a wine cave, and going on a coffee and hot chocolate tasting tour.

Despite his trepidations, Alfonso says he came away from his river cruise a true believe and has been sharing that they are in fact "for everyone."

Cruise line showdown: Comparing Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean for families

When I first started cruising more than 25 years ago, the typical ship was heavy with honeymooners and retirees — the "newlywed and nearly dead," as the old joke goes. The most exciting thing for families on the top deck of many vessels, other than a pool, was a shuffleboard court. The line perhaps most associated with family cruising, Disney Cruise Line , didn't even exist yet. Things sure have changed.

Among the lines that dominate the industry, the game increasingly is all about families. The world's two biggest cruise operators — Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean — now draw hundreds of thousands of families a year and, along with smaller players Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, are increasingly packing their ships with every sort of family-friendly attraction imaginable, from massive waterslides and deck-top "sky rides" to go-kart tracks, bumper-car pavilions and laser-tag courses. Carnival is even planning a roller coaster for its next vessel .

In short, ships are becoming floating versions of the most over-the-top family resorts on land and there's never been a more exciting time to try family cruising. That is, if you can figure out the right ship and cruise line for you.

For a first-timer , booking a family cruise can be more than a bit overwhelming. Each of the aforementioned lines has a different vibe, and no two ships — even vessels from the same series — are exactly alike.

What's more, pricing for family cruises is all over the map. A sailing with Disney can cost two or three times as much per day as a sailing with Carnival, Norwegian or MSC.

Below we offer considerations and pricing comparisons for three of the biggest players in the family cruise market: Disney, Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

Cruise lines overview

You might assume Disney is the Hercules of family cruising — the all-powerful competitor with no rival. But in the cruise world, Disney is still somewhat of a niche player. With just four ships compared to the 52 operated by family cruise giants Carnival and Royal Caribbean, Disney is like the cruising equivalent of Olaf from "Frozen" — a bit secondary to the plot, if still much beloved. In terms of passenger capacity, Disney is currently barely a tenth the size of Royal Caribbean alone, and it doesn't offer nearly as diverse an array of home ports and itineraries.

Note though that Disney Cruise Line plans to launch three new ships in its Triton class with the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish set to premier in January 2022.

What Disney does offer that no one else can is Disney. From Disney tunes piped into cabin hallways and Disney-shaped food items on menus to Disney-themed evening shows and the promise of meeting your favorite Disney princess, Disney ships are mouse bait for the diehard Mickey lover. If Disney is your thing, nothing in cruising quite compares. Just be prepared to pay up big time for the privilege of sailing with Captain Mickey or Minnie (more on that in a moment).

Carnival long has claimed to be the biggest cruise line for families, with more than 800,000 children a year traveling on its 26 ships (out of 5.2 million total passengers). Known for its affordability as well as its lively, unpretentious, fun-focused vibe, this is the most budget option of the three lines we are comparing. You're likely to pay considerably less to sail with Carnival than Royal Caribbean or Disney.

For families craving the mega-resort experience, there's nothing quite like a Royal Caribbean vessel. The biggest of the line's 26 ships are more than 70% bigger than the biggest Disney and Carnival ships afloat and feature a lot more "stuff" that will get your kids' hearts racing — everything from rock-climbing walls and surfing pools to skydiving simulators and ice-skating rinks. Royal Caribbean also will offer you a lot more choices when it comes to itineraries. The line will have seven ships in Europe this summer, for instance, compared to one for Disney and three for Carnival. (Carnival, it should be noted, is a line that primarily focuses on cruises out of U.S. ports that are easy for its budget-conscious customers to reach by car or with a short, inexpensive flight.)

Comparing prices: A specific example

In general, on very similar itineraries, you'll a pay a premium — sometimes a huge premium — to take your teens and toddlers on a Disney ship instead of a Royal Caribbean ship, and both of those lines will cost you more than Carnival. Just how much more? We priced similar summer sailings to the Caribbean on the three lines and found a hypothetical family of four would pay about 2.6 times more to get aboard a Royal Caribbean ship than a Carnival ship and more than four times that to sail with Disney.

For the comparison, we looked at specific seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailings offered by each line out of Port Canaveral, Florida, at the beginning of August. We chose this routing because it allowed for one of the most apples-to-apples matchups you can make between the brands. All three of the companies have positioned one of their newest, snazziest vessels in Port Canaveral for seven-night Caribbean sailings.

In Carnival's case, it's Carnival Breeze, which debuted in 2012 and is one of the line's newer Vista-class vessels. For Royal Caribbean, it's Harmony of the Seas, which began sailing in 2016 and is part of the line's popular Oasis class. Disney's contender in the market is Disney Fantasy, the line's newest ship. It debuted in 2012, just two months before Carnival Breeze.

When pricing, we assumed we were booking a family with two adults and two children ages 8 and 12 who would share a single cabin. We found:

• The least expensive cabin available for Carnival Breeze at the time of our pricing would have set our family back $2,020.56 (an average fare of $562 per person, plus $139.64 per person in taxes and fees). For that, our family would have gotten an Interior cabin measuring 185 square feet. Such rooms have two twin beds that convert into a king bed, plus two beds that pull down from the wall.
• The least expensive cabin on Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas costs $5,310.80 (an average fare of $1,213.75 per person, plus $113.95 each in taxes and fees). Notably, that higher price would have gotten our family a cabin measuring just 149 square feet — nearly 20% smaller than the cabin on Carnival Breeze. As with Carnival, it was an interior cabin — in this case with two twin beds that convert into a king bed and a double sofa bed.
• The least expensive cabin on Disney Fantasy costs a relatively sky-high $8,259.16 (an average fare of $1,959.44 per person, plus $105.35 each in taxes and fees). For that, our family would have gotten a Standard Inside Stateroom that measures 169 square feet — a bit bigger than the comparable cabin on Harmony of the Seas but smaller than the one on Carnival Breeze. Such rooms have a queen bed, a sofa that converts into a single bed and a pull-down bunk.

Trading up to a balcony cabin: The differential stays the same

Sometimes the cheapest cabin on a ship just won't do, so we also priced the cost of trading up to a balcony cabin on each of the vessels — an exercise that helps to illustrate two big things.

First: A "splurge" on a balcony cabin versus an inside cabin isn't nearly as costly as many people think. In our pricing test, passengers would only have to pony up 1% more for a balcony cabin on Royal Caribbean and just 4% on Disney Cruise Line. Carnival was the outlier with its balcony cabin pricing out 26% more expensive than an interior (which isn't always the case).

Second: The premium you'll pay for a Disney or Royal Caribbean ship versus a Carnival ship is roughly the same when booking a balcony as it is when booking an entry-level cabin. In this case, we found our family of four would pay double to get on Harmony of the Seas than Carnival Breeze and four times more to get on Disney Fantasy. Specifically:

• The least expensive balcony cabin on Carnival Breeze would have cost our family $2,554.56 (an average of $499 per person, plus $139.64 per person in taxes and fees). For that they would have gotten a Cove Balcony that has basically the same footprint as the previously priced interior cabin (its interior space is an identical 185 square feet) with the addition of a 45-square-foot balcony.
• The least expensive balcony cabin available on Harmony of the Seas costs $5,363.80 ($1,227 per person, plus $113.95 each in taxes and fees). For that, you get a cabin overlooking the ship's Boardwalk amusement area with 182 square feet of interior space and a 52-square-foot balcony.

• The least expensive balcony cabin on Disney Fantasy costs $8,609.16 ($2,046.94 per person, plus $105.35 per person in taxes and fees). This for what the line calls a Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Extended Veranda — Mickey sure has a fondness for long names. These cabins have 204 square feet of interior space, plus a 43-square-foot balcony. The room has a queen bed, single convertible sofa, upper bull-down bed (in some) and a split bath design with tub and shower (in most).

Going big with suites and concierge-level service

For those willing to splurge on even bigger cabins and upgraded service, the comparisons between the ships get more complicated.

Carnival offers relatively few suites on most of its vessels. Fewer than 75 of the 1,845 cabins on Carnival Breeze are suites. The line also lacks a premium "concierge class" of cabins that come with dedicated concierge service and other extras.

Royal Caribbean's recent vessels, by contrast, are awash with suites in a wide range of sizes, including enormous (and super-pricy), two-deck-high complexes that are among the most luxurious accommodations at sea. Royal Caribbean, in recent years, also has added a concierge-class-like program for suite passengers on some of its vessels (Harmony of the Seas among them). Called Royal Suite Class, it offers more polished service and exclusive access to shipboard restaurants, lounges and attractions.

Like Carnival, Disney offers relatively few suites on its ships. Just 21 of the 1,250 cabins on Disney Fantasy are suites. But the line does offer exclusive Concierge cabins that come with access to a concierge team that can help arrange onboard activities and services. On Disney Fantasy, the Concierge service is available with all 21 suites, plus 20 nonsuite Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah cabins. In addition to concierge service, all 41 rooms come with access to a private concierge lounge and sun deck. Other perks include priority boarding.

For our hypothetical family:

• The least expensive suite on Carnival Breeze — a 340-square-foot Ocean Suite — priced at $3,934.56 (an average of $844 per person, plus $139.64 in taxes and fees). This is, notably, still half as expensive than even the least expensive cabin available on Disney Fantasy.
• For the suite life on Royal Caribbean, our family would pay at least $7,538 ($1,884.50 per person, plus $113.95 in taxes and fees). That's for a Junior Suite, which measures 287 square feet plus an 80-square-foot balcony.
• The least expensive suite on Disney Fantasy priced at a stratospheric $23,546.60 ($5,781.30 per person, plus $105.28 per person in taxes and fees). That's for a 622-square-foot Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite with Verandah. That said, you can get into one of the nonsuite Concierge cabins for about half that cost. Disney doesn't call those cabins suites, but they measure a respectable 306 square feet. That's not much smaller than the smallest suites on the other ships.

What's included and what's not

As regular cruisers know, the fares that lines quote for sailings include more than just your lodging. For all the ships in our comparison, the price also includes breakfast, lunch and dinner (at main restaurants and buffets); nightly entertainment in showrooms; and a significant swath of onboard activities. What's not included are alcoholic and, in some cases, nonalcoholic drinks (Disney offers free sodas on its ships; the others don't); meals at "specialty" restaurants; spa and salon services; shore tours and some onboard activities.

We won't run through every extra charge here. But consider that you'll pay around $6 to $7 for a beer on all three ships, and a cocktail can run anywhere from $7 to $14 (in general, Harmony of the Seas has the highest drink prices). Among extra-charge restaurants, you'll find a flat fee of $38 per person at the signature steakhouse on Carnival Breeze, a tad less than the $43-per-person charge for the Chops Grille steakhouse on Harmony of the Seas. Disney Fantasy doesn't have a steakhouse, but its signature, adults-only Palo eatery is in the ballpark at an additional $40 per person.

You'll also pay extra for the service charges that have become commonplace on ships. For most cabins on Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Disney vessels, a family of four would pay $391.72, $406 and $378 per week, respectively, in such fees. Passengers in suites pay more.

The bottom line: It's frustratingly easy for a family of four on any of these ships to run up $1,000 or more in extra charges.

Family attractions

Each of the ships in our comparison is among the most alluring in their respective fleets for families. You'll find watery play zones, family pools and other kiddie lures on the top decks of all three vessels, and plenty of supervised kid zones in their interiors.

Specifically, Carnival has loaded the top of Carnival Breeze with one of its signature, family-focused WaterWorks waterpark areas that has two giant waterslides, a soaking "dump bucket" and other get-you-wet features; a suspended-in-the-sky ropes course; a miniature golf course; and a basketball court. Family attractions on the inside of the vessel include a 3D theater with moving seats and special effects (a cruise ship rarity).

Not to be outdone, Disney has given Disney Fantasy one of the most innovative deck-top attractions at sea, the 765-foot-long AquaDuck "water coaster." Disney Fantasy's top deck also is home to a family pool, kiddie waterslide, kiddie play area, miniature golf course and basketball court. Its insides are loaded with some of the most elaborate children's play areas at sea — all Disney themed, of course.

Still, when it comes to family-friendly attractions, neither Carnival Breeze nor Disney Fantasy comes close to offering the array of options available on Harmony of the Seas.

At 226,963 gross register tons, the ship is about 75% bigger than its two competitors, and all that extra space allows for a crazy array of amusements. You'll find a waterpark area with three large slides; a separate dry slide that plunges nine decks (Royal Caribbean says it's 10, but don't be fooled; it counts a Deck 13 that doesn't exist); three main pools and separate surfing pools; a watery kiddie play zone; two rock-climbing walls; a miniature golf course; a basketball court; and a zip line. There's also an outdoor Boardwalk area that mimics the Jersey Shore with a carousel and arcade. Teens have their own onboard disco, part of interior kid zones spread over parts of two interior decks.

Crowds and service

On all three of the ships in our comparison, you're going to feel the crowds at times (just ask TPG Family founder Summer Hull, aka Mommy Points, who recently wrote about the pool area pileup she saw during a Disney sailing). This is just par for the course on big, mass-market vessels that sail with thousands of people.

Still, when it comes to feeling the jam, there are some significant differences between the three ships in our comparison.

For starters, you'll often find more people packed onto Carnival Breeze than Disney Fantasy, even though the two ships are roughly the same size (about 130,000 gross register tons). Carnival Breeze can hold up to 4,891 passengers if every berth is filled, about 22% more than Disney Fantasy. The differential is even more notable if you look at the "double occupancy" numbers for the two ships — the number of people they would carry if two people occupied every cabin. Carnival Breeze's capacity based on double occupancy is 3,690 — nearly 48% higher than the comparable number for Disney Fantasy. Packing in more people on a similarly sized ship is one of the key ways Carnival keeps it price point low. Another way is by keeping tight controls on staffing. Carnival Breeze sails with a staff of 1,386 — 72 fewer than Disney Fantasy. The result: A crew-to-passenger ratio, based on total occupancy, of about 1 to 3.5 for Carnival Breeze versus 1 to 3.2 for Disney Fantasy.

Comparing crew-to-passenger ratios on ships can offer a rough guide to their service levels, though there are caveats to this approach. A significant chunk of the extra staff on Disney Fantasy are involved in the ship's entertainment program, which is far more elaborate. It doesn't necessarily mean Disney is devoting more staff to service positions in restaurants, bars and other areas. Meanwhile, of the three vessels in the comparison, it is Harmony of the Seas — the ship with, by far, the highest passenger capacity — which boasts the best crew-to-passenger ratio. While the ship can sail with up to 6,687 people, it operates with 2,200 crew. That gives it a crew-to-passenger ratio, based on total occupancy, of around 1 to 3.

Destinations and private islands

As noted above, our pricing comparison for the ships assumes an Eastern Caribbean itinerary out of Port Canaveral, Florida. While roughly similar, the routings that each of the vessels take are not identical:

• Carnival Breeze stops at Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Grand Turk in the Turks & Caicos.
• Harmony of the Seas also visits San Juan, but substitutes St. Kitts and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay , for the other ports.
• Like Carnival Breeze, Disney Fantasy heads to St. Thomas, but combines it with visits to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

When it comes to private islands, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day is the most elaborate by far. The line is just finishing a $200 million overhaul of the getaway that has brought a major waterpark with 13 waterslides, including the tallest one in North America; the Caribbean's largest freshwater pool; the Caribbean's largest wave pool and a balloon ride that takes you up 450 feet above the island. There's also an exclusive — and expensive — private beach club coming in December.

Disney's Castaway Cay is more of a traditional cruise line private island with beach areas (snorkels, tubes and floats are available for rent), a small floating waterslide complex and games such as volleyball. You also can rent bikes for a bit of exploring around the island. Paddleboards, kayaks and aquabikes are also available.

While Carnival doesn't have a private island of its own, two of the stops on Carnival Breeze's itinerary are private port developments built by its parent company that come with their own pool areas and more. The 25-acre Amber Cove development has a sprawling pool with a swim-up bar, waterslides, zip lines and private cabanas as well as bars, restaurants and shops. The 18-acre Grand Turk Cruise Center complex has its own pool area, beach areas and cabanas as well as bars, restaurants and shops.

Bottom line

I've sailed on all these lines many times over the years, and they all offer a lot for families. Which one is right for you? The answer depends on a number of factors specific to you and your family: your budget, the ages of your kids, their personalities and interests in specific activities and the destinations that you hope to see.

For those on a tight budget, Carnival is hard to beat — as the pricing comparison above makes clear. But if you have a little more wiggle room with your pocketbook, there are good arguments for paying up for a week with Royal Caribbean or Disney. When it comes to the quality of service, entertainment and dining, it's a little bit of "you get what you pay for" with the lines.

As noted above, you'll find a higher ratio of crew-to-passengers on Royal Caribbean and Disney ships, and all those extra crew members do make a difference in the experience. The difference is particularly notable when it comes to entertainment offerings, with both Royal Caribbean and Disney fielding much more elaborate shows with bigger casts and name-brand stories. Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas, for instance, features a 90-minute adaptation of one of Broadway's biggest crowd-pleasers, "Grease," in a soaring theater that puts many on Broadway to shame, plus an outdoor "aquatheater" that's home to dazzling aerial performances. Disney's ships are chock full of Disney-themed entertainment that wins kudos for its high production values.

With its greater number of "older kid" amusements, such as surfing pools and rock-climbing walls, Harmony of the Seas is a particularly good choice for families with teens. Disney ships, like many of the Disney parks, aim younger with their attractions and are probably best when your kids are in the 6- to 12-year-old range. Just remember that you're paying a hefty "Disney premium" to get on board. If you're a big Disney fan, it makes sense. If you're not, it probably doesn't.
