Water Ecology & Engineering Field Trips

NYC H2O provides free Water Ecology and Engineering Field Trips to historic reservoirs and wetlands in all five boroughs for grades 2-12. These field trips meet and exceed NYC and NYS STEM curricular standards.

Each reservoir site has its own dramatic story of how it supplied the city with drinking water. Wetland sites demonstrate how nature protects our City from storm surges and manage stormwater to help the City keep waterways clean and become more resilient in adapting to climate change.

H2O’s team of talented field guides engage students in interactive outdoor activities which support STEM learning with a focus on water ecology. H2O guides explain how reservoirs were built so that the city had enough good quality water to support its growth. Students get to experience these seldom visited, yet public ‘natural’ treasures on field trips and learn how parks were built to protect the reservoirs.

The sites are:

  • Ridgewood Reservoir, Queens
  • Silver Lake, State Island
  • Baisley Pond, Jamaica, Queens
  • Jerome Park Reservoir, Bronx
  • Central Park Reservoir, Manhattan
  • High Bridge, Manhattan and the Bronx
  • Lemon Creek, Staten Island
  • Plumb Beach, Brooklyn
  • Canarsie Park, Brooklyn

Jerome Park Reservoir

The Jerome Park Reservoir sits on the grounds of the racetrack where the Belmont Stakes was first run, before the city took over the land to create a reservoir for the "New Aqueduct" [Croton Aqueduct]. Come learn what improvements are being made; explore the rich history of the neighborhood where the Revolutionary War Fort Independence used to be and more recently the Italian community of Villa Avenue!

virtual field trips nyc

High Bridge

Built as part of the original Croton Aqueduct, this bridge carried fresh water into Manhattan from outside NYC for the first time. Come learn the rich history of New York City’s oldest standing bridge, and enjoy some of the best views of the Harlem Valley and the Bronx!

virtual field trips nyc

Central Park Reservoir

The Central Park Reservoir holds 1 billion gallons of water, which is the amount of freshwater that NYC residents consume every single day. On this tour, students will see first hand remnants of these historic facts and learn about this engineering marvel, which allowed the city to grow and prosper!

virtual field trips nyc

Silver Lake Reservoir

Originally a spring fed pond on Staten Island, Silver Lake Reservoir was chosen as the landing point for water coming down from the Catskills. By 1917 the lake had been transformed into a 56 acre reservoir with a capacity of 400M gallons! On this tour, students will learn about the native plants, animals, and the rich NYC history, as we explore the surrounding park of Silver Lake Reservoir.

virtual field trips nyc

Lemon Creek

Lemon Creek is part of a unique-to-NYC green infrastructure project called the Bluebelt, which directs rain into waterways, eventually flowing into Raritan Bay and the harbor. Join us to explore these elements up-close, and experience how city and nature collaborate to problem-solve!

virtual field trips nyc

Ridgewood Reservoir

The historic Ridgewood Reservoir was at the center of the now defunct water supply system that served the once-independent City of Brooklyn. This system supported Brooklyn's growth by bringing fresh water from Queens and Long Island to the Reservoir. On this tour, students will learn of Brooklyn’s water history and experience how nature has reclaimed these urban ruins.

virtual field trips nyc

Baisley Pond

Originally several streams, Baisley Pond was created by farmers who built a dam in order to power their grain mills! As the city of Brooklyn built out its waterworks in the 1850s, they bought the water body and transformed it into a reservoir. On this tour, students will learn the history behind why the reservoir was eventually taken off-line, as we explore the native plants and animals in the surrounding park of Baisley Pond.

virtual field trips nyc

Plumb Beach

With a major NYC highway just feet from the water, this historic waterfront was identified by the Army Corps of Engineering as particularly vulnerable to extreme consequences. Today, students can explore the beach and learn about how green infrastructure projects like this site create habitat for wildlife, and help protect our city from natural disasters.

virtual field trips nyc

Canarsie Park

Canarsie Park and neighborhood got their names from the Canarsie (or Canarsee) Indians who once lived in western Long Island. Canarsie Park has a sprawling 130+ acres of recreational parkland and features oak-pine barren forest and wetlands with flood-tolerant trees such as sweet gum, sycamore, American white-cedar and winterberry holly. Come take a tour with us at this recently-restored natural area and learn about NYC’s drinking water and urban ecology through a series of hands-on lessons.

The Best Fifth Grade Field Trips (In Person and Virtual)

Head count!

virtual field trips nyc

Being the oldest student on campus affords some privileges, not the least of which is a minimum of one awesome field trip. No baby field trips here. Take advantage of having more mature learners, and try one of these engaging field trips that you can only really do in fifth grade.

Not all of these trips will be possible everywhere, but keep in mind any local treasures that are unique to your area. And when you can’t manage a trip—for whatever reason—try our virtual fifth grade field trips below.

In-Person Fifth Grade Field Trips

1. tv station.

Current events are important in fifth grade, so take your students to learn what it really takes to put on a newscast. They’ll get to see the sets up close, meet the anchors, and maybe even be featured on the evening news (and what fifth grader doesn’t want to see themselves on television?).

2. Art Museum

Fifth graders can perhaps appreciate fine art in a way that younger students cannot. I remember being captivated by the impressionists at that age. I’m not saying a 10-year-old won’t laugh at a nude statue or painting, but they just might learn to appreciate it. And they should.

3. College or University

An aerial view of a university campus, as an example of fifth grade field trip locations

As they approach middle school, now is an ideal time to get fifth graders thinking about higher education. Take a tour, observe a class, meet college students, and visit a sports complex, bookstore, or library to get a feel for college life.

4. Community Theater

Children’s theaters often have options for older students, but for fifth graders, a local community theater is also a possibility. Lots of musicals are fifth-grade friendly. They might also enjoy an adaptation of a classic like The Secret Garden or Peter Pan , which local theaters frequently put on.

5. History Museum

Fifth grade social studies focuses on all 50 states. If they already went to the state history museum in fourth grade, you might try something with more national relevance, like a manuscript museum (I saw Richard Nixon’s actual resignation letter in Tacoma, Washington!).

6. State Capitol

Close up of the Texas state capital, as an example of the best fifth grade field trips

Bring your government and civics unit to life with a visit to your state capitol. Try to time your visit for when Congress is in session so kids can get a peek at representative democracy in action. If they can meet some elected officials, even better!

7. Local Creek, Pond, or Lake

Plan to spend some time outside with your fifth graders. This might include a clean-up event to get students involved in community service. It could also be an opportunity to observe plant and animal life or take water samples for testing.

8. National Historic Site

There are plenty of sites that are significant to your state, but what about those that played a role in U.S. history? For example, Pearl Harbor in Hawaii or the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama. Check out the full list of U.S. National Historic Landmarks by state .

9. Botanical Garden

A botanical garden with colorful flowers in bloom, as an example of fifth grade field trips

Most botanical gardens offer a self-guided tour option, which is a great way for students to take in the diversity of plant life. Bring notebooks and let them sketch! And consider adding on a hands-on plant science workshop (like a flower dissection!) if that’s available.

10. Ropes Course

You might consider this a “just for fun” field trip, but students will learn teamwork, cooperation, and strategy through the obstacles. Ropes courses are self-esteem boosters, and fifth graders moving on to middle school could use a good dose of confidence.

11. Planetarium

Planetarium interior, as an example of best fifth grade field trips

If you’re looking for an out-of-this-world experience for your STEM-loving fifth graders, take them on a trip to a planetarium. They’ll get a chance to stargaze while learning all about the wonders of space.

12. Concert Hall

If you’re within driving distance, consider a trip to a philharmonic or symphony concert hall. Some venues offer special programs to schools, and others allow schools to attend rehearsals for an upcoming show. Local concert halls are another great option to foster music appreciation through choral groups, jazz bands, and more musically talented community members.

13. National, State, or Local Park

Depending on the location, there may be options for a guided tour by a park ranger or a self-guided tour. Either way, your students will enjoy learning about wildlife and plants while getting some exercise and fresh air. Many parks even waive admission fees for educational groups.

Virtual Fifth Grade Field Trips

1. amazon robotics fulfillment center tour.

Amazon Fulfillment Center Tech Tours with photo of warehouse, Amazon boxes on conveyer belt, and Amazon worker wearing safety vest.

Ever wonder how Amazon delivers packages at lightning speed? Take your fifth graders on a 45-minute behind-the-scenes tour of an Amazon fulfillment center  to see how computer science, engineering, and real people work together to make the magic happen. During this interactive virtual field trip, students meet Amazon engineers who explain concepts like algorithms and machine learning. It’s aligned to NGSS, CSTA, and ISTE standards, and there’s also a Teacher Toolkit that includes a facilitation guide plus student worksheets, certificates, and extension learning opportunities. (Hint: If you like this virtual field trip, look for the release of more Amazon Future Engineer Tech Tours. The next one, Space Tour, will be available in October 2022.)

2. Slime in Space

Nickelodeon teamed up with two astronauts on the International Space Station to demonstrate how slime reacts to microgravity and had kids reproduce those same demonstrations back here on Earth. It makes for an amazing 15-minute virtual field trip!

3. U.S. Census Bureau

Kids can learn about the 2020 Census and how census data is collected and used. This virtual field trip also features interviews with subject matter experts and an interactive challenge.

4. Ellis Island

A close up of the Statue of Liberty with Ellis Island in the background

Want to enhance a unit on immigration at the turn of the century? Look no further than this virtual field trip to Ellis Island , the former immigration inspection station in New York Harbor that is also home to the Statue of Liberty.

5. Metropolitan Museum of Art

Bring the iconic New York museum into your classroom or home! Experience the Met online with any of the 26 online galleries , including Christian Dior: Ball Gowns and The Art of Music Through Time.

6. Google Arts & Culture

A collaboration with more than 1,200 leading museums and archives, Google Arts & Culture is an incredible source for learning about monumental works of art. We recommend the Street View virtual tours as well as Art Zoom guided tours.

7. National Constitution Center

The National Constitution Center serves as a “headquarters for civic education.” Their main exhibit, Story of We The People, guides visitors through milestones in America’s history while revealing how the U.S. Constitution is as important today as it was in 1787. Check out the Interactive Constitution section , and be sure to watch the virtual tour .

8. Colonial Williamsburg

This living-history museum provides a look into life in an early American community. The website offers eight different webcams , featuring areas such as the tavern, the armory, and the market house.

9. National Park

Woman looking out over a cliff at Grand Canyon National Park, as an example of virtual fifth grade field trips

If you can’t take an in-person trip to a national park, there are plenty of virtual field trip options for fifth graders. For example, you can learn about glaciers, fjords, and volcanoes during this virtual field trip to Alaska and Hawaii national parks . There are also virtual field trips available to Wyoming and Utah national parks , California and Nevada national parks , as well as Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado national parks .

Virtual Field Trips

Photo

Food and agriculture experiences come to life for students during farm visits, and now an opportunity to give a look behind the barn doors is more accessible than ever with a virtual field trip.

With field trip and transportation funding becoming more scarce every school year, you can still give your students an interactive look at farms and food-related industries. Live virtual field trips are engaging because students will have the chance to ask the farmers questions in real time. Experiences will be developed for grades Pre-K through 12, and each individual field trip description will include the grade levels appropriate for an experience.

Classroom Requirements

  • Device connected to the internet
  • Webcam, microphone, and speakers
  • Work with your school's IT staff to ensure these sites are not blocked

Before your Virtual Field Trip

Inquiry box.

Prior to your virtual field trip you will be shipped an Inquiry Box to help trigger the curiosity of students. The Inquiry Box will hold four to six items that may include a tool used on the farm, products that are essential to animal or plant health, a farm or food by-product, samples, and more. None of the items will come with a description, and all of the items will be discussed, viewed, or demonstrated during the virtual field trip.

Strategies to Consider with your Inquiry Box:

  • Schedule an unboxing to build anticipation
  • Students select an item, create a hypothesis of its use or function, research, and present findings to the class
  • Place the items around the room and students move in stations to examine each item and hypothesize it's function
  • Write a question about one or more item to ask the farmer
  • During the field trip, students can check off which items they see, sharing locations or context of each item during your debrief

Christmas Tree Planting at Rocking Horse Farm

Although peak harvest season can be the busiest time of year, there is very little "free time" on a farm. Throughout the year, farmers reflect, research, plan, imagine, prepare, create, test, and improve their farm and farming practices so that they might be more efficient and provide the highest quality products to consumers. In this 40-minute virtual field trip, participating classrooms will return to Rocking Horse Farm to learn how farmer Julie plans for future Christmas tree harvests by replanting her Christmas tree forest, improves and nurtures her orchard, and prepares her alpacas for spring shearing on her diversified farm.

The first 100 classrooms to register will receive an inquiry box.

Rocking Horse Farm

  • Suggested for Grades 2-12
  • 40 minute duration

Christmas trees are an important part of many people's winter celebration. Although these evergreens are displayed for a short period each year, there are years of hard work which go into the production of these holiday icons. Real Christmas tree farms help to stabilize soils, can be planted in poor soils where other crops cannot be grown, create valuable wildlife habitats, and help to protect water sheds. Unlike alternative nonnatural decorations, Christmas trees are also 100% biodegradable and parts or all of a tree can be upcycled in to value added wood mulches, soils, wreaths, decorations, and even livestock feed.

Shaver Hill Maple

Background Information

As winter begins to wane with the lengthen of days and the increase of milder temperatures, sugar makers across the New York prepare for the new harvest. The Northeast region of the United States is unique in that this region is the only region in the world that can produce this sweet, tasty commodity.

Maple production has been part of the Hill family tradition since Dennis Hill, the patriarch of the Hill family, purchased the Shaver property in 1984 after working many years as a farm hand on the Shaver farm. In 2004, Dennis and his two sons Dwayne and David sold off the dairy operation and went full time into maple production and maple equipment sales. Damian Hill is the third generation Hill to work the sugarbushes of Shaver Hill Farm.

Having recently graduated from Cornell University, Damian has moved back to the farm to continue in his families sugaring legacy. Damian carries on many of the traditional practices carried out on the farm and is excited to inject new and innovative ideas to grow his family's business. Damian has a keen eye for creating new revenue streams especially in using the high-quality New York maple syrup produced by the Hill family to create value added products.

Educational Connections

Educators who would like to learn how to teach core content standards “through the lens of maple production” can register for our two-hour professional development later in the day of March 3rd. Educators who participate in this professional development experience will receive classroom kits for the lessons covered in the experience as well as two hours of CTLE credits.
