The 10 best cruises for couples seeking romance and together time at sea

Erica Silverstein

What could be more romantic than a couples' cruise?

You and your sweetheart can explore new destinations together by day, stroll arm in arm across the open decks as the sun sets over the ocean and then enjoy dinner, drinks and a show every evening. Couples can bond over onboard trivia wins or relax together in the ship's spa.

The best cruises for couples don't have to break the bank, but they should focus on adults more than families, and elevated food, service and accommodations are always appreciated.

When compiling our list of favorites, we recognized that couples have diverse interests and pinned our top picks to the standout features that set these lines apart.

Based on those criteria, here are the 10 best cruises for couples, whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or a fun vacation to enjoy together.

Celebrity Cruises: Best all-around cruise for couples

best couples cruise lines

Celebrity Cruises tops our list of best cruises for couples because it's got something for everyone. Gen-X couples will dig the hip dining and drinking venues on the line's newest Edge-class ships.

Older couples should seek out the line's longer itineraries through the Panama Canal or to the South Pacific and Australia. Gay couples have long been fans of the line's signature Martini Bar, as well as its inclusive culture.

Celebrity's ships are big but not that big, and their top decks feature hot tubs, pool decks and resort-like lounge areas, rather than waterslides and roller coasters.

Couples who prefer not to be nickel-and-dimed on vacation can pay up front for the All Included package that covers drinks and Wi-Fi so they can focus on maximizing time with each other instead of worrying about the budget.

SeaDream Yacht Club: Best couples cruise for a yacht-like escape

best couples cruise lines

Nearly everyone is partnered up on a SeaDream Yacht Club cruise; this isn't the line for taking your kids or your besties. That's because the line's two yacht-like ships and over-the-top all-inclusive service create the kind of pampered VIP experience that's prime for romance.

Enjoy most of your meals alfresco, sampling from the raw menu, or indulging in ship-made ice cream. Cuddle up with your lover on the top-deck Balinese beds, and lounge away a sea day.

Ditch the tour full of your shipmates, and spend an afternoon together kayaking or standup paddleboarding straight from the ship's water sports platform. Feed each other caviar as you sip Champagne on the beach at one of the line's Champagne and Caviar Splash parties.

The crew will cater to your every request, whether that's running into town to buy a case of your favorite beer to have on board or offering you every alternative imaginable if you don't want burgers at the barbecue. You won't have to worry about a thing – except how to spend the day with your favorite person.

Paul Gauguin Cruises: Best cruise for far-flung romance

best couples cruise lines

Nothing says honeymoon or special anniversary more than a bucket-list trip to Tahiti. You'll definitely want to save a night or two to experience a swanky over-water bungalow at a Polynesian resort, but if you want to explore multiple destinations, a cruise is the best way to island hop.

Paul Gauguin is the cruise ship to book if you want a culturally immersive experience and a luxurious home away from home.

Commemorate a relationship milestone with a Polynesian blessing ceremony; then treat yourself to alfresco massages on one of the private islands the ship visits.

Learn to scuba dive or explore the gorgeous Polynesian reefs together if you're already certified. Give your special someone a kiss, and take a selfie as you enjoy breathtaking sailaways from the lush green islands on your itinerary. It'll be a shared vacation to remember.

Virgin Voyages: Best cruise for young couples

best couples cruise lines

If you're not the type of couple who wants to gaze longingly into each other's eyes but would rather live it up or get a bit naughty, Virgin Voyages is the best cruise choice for you.

On board the line's trendsetting ships, you can drop the work-week formality and let loose. Get matching tattoos at the onboard ink shop, or wear your sexiest red outfit to party on deck like a rockstar.

Every night is date night on Virgin's ships, where every restaurant is included and you can dine on Mexican, Korean, Italian, Mediterranean and Japanese cuisine throughout your sailing. Get in the mood with a burlesque-style performance, a sassy game show or a dance-off in the nightclub. Shake your phone to order Champagne, perhaps to your cabin balcony where you can laze in a hammock and watch the world sail by.

Holland America: Best cruise for retired couples

best couples cruise lines

Retired couples aren't restricted by limited vacation time and can take those multi-week cruises to far-off destinations. Holland America is the cruise line you want if a week at sea is simply not enough.

Try a four-week cruise to all of Alaska's ports or a 35-night exploration of Northern Europe. Are you a couple that hates flying? You can cruise Holland America ships from U.S. ports to Africa and South America if you don't mind spending more than a month sailing. Or hop on a plane to visit Australia, Asia or the South Pacific islands on your next cruise.

On board, trade tastes with your sweetie from dishes created by the line's Culinary Council celebrity chefs. Then dance the night away at B.B. King's Blues Club. Fill your sea days with some R&R at the Greenhouse Spa, port-to-table cooking demos or photo lessons that you can put to use in the next port of call.

Oceania Cruises: Best cruise for foodie couples

best couples cruise lines

The way to your partner's heart might be through their stomach. If so, the two of you will want to book an Oceania cruise for your next romantic escape. The upscale cruise line partners with Jacques Pepin to create menus for its numerous complimentary dining venues, including Jacques' eponymous French restaurant, an authentic Italian venue inspired by recipes from the line's Italian crew members, a classic steakhouse and a contemporary pan-Asian eatery.

Plus, if the two of you are true foodies, you'll want to splurge on intimate wine- and Champagne-paired dinners at La Reserve by Wine Spectator (in partnership with Moet & Chandon). On port days, get to know the local food culture with a Culinary Discovery Tour; on sea days, team up to put your chef skills to work at a Culinary Center class.

Add in a beautiful pool deck and spa, heavenly in-room beds and port-intensive itineraries around the world, and your vacation will be "chef's kiss."

Regent Seven Seas Cruises: Best cruise for over-the-top luxury

best couples cruise lines

For a special anniversary, or perhaps a honeymoon, you want to treat your loved one to the best of the best. If you're looking for over-the-top luxury, look no further than Regent Seven Seas Cruises . The most all-inclusive of all the cruise lines, it's the best cruise choice for couples who want nothing but the most refined, upscale experience.

Spacious cabins are all suites, which offer both sleeping and sitting areas. Book one of the line's top suites (such as the enormous and lavish Regent Suite ) when you want to host cocktail parties in your onboard accommodations or pretend the hundreds of other guests on board don't exist. Order room service when you two lovers simply can't bear to disentangle yourselves from the top-quality bed sheets.

If you do manage to abandon your suite, you can enjoy a quiet tete-a-tete over complimentary drinks at numerous bars around the ship. Meals are high quality in both the larger and reservation-only venues, and service is second to none, even with gratuities covered by your cruise fare. Plus, you can make memories during included shore excursions in every port; choose from guided tours, winery visits and active excursions.

UnCruise Adventures: Best small-ship cruise for active couples

best couples cruise lines

Is your idea of a perfect date a long bike ride with your sweetheart or a hike up a nearby mountain? If so, choose an expedition cruise for your ideal getaway. UnCruise Adventures is the best cruise for couples who prefer to be active rather than sit around and watch the waves.

Small 22- to 86-passenger ships take active travelers to Alaska, Hawaii and Central America destinations, where kayaking, hiking, snorkeling, paddleboarding and hiking are daily activities. You'll learn about the local culture in the places you visit and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations you'd never see on a mega-ship.

But it's not all rough and rugged. Indulge in meals made on board with locally sourced ingredients, and toast your significant other with a cocktail or glass of wine (all included in your cruise fare). Rest your weary legs in the on-deck hot tub. Cabins aren't fancy, but you're not on board to spend lots of time in your room. Lace up those boots, and go greet the great outdoors, hand in hand.

Silversea Cruises: Best luxury cruise for adventurous couples

best couples cruise lines

What if the two of you want that adventure trip but still wish to be pampered in luxury on the ship? Then you need to turn to Silversea Cruises , which has made a name for itself pairing extreme destinations with extreme indulgence on board.

The line's expedition ships literally travel to the ends of the Earth, with seasonal Arctic and Antarctic cruises. Silversea has a ship dedicated to sailing the Galapagos Islands while other vessels explore more remote locales in Australia, the South Pacific and Africa.

These hardy vessels feature reinforced hulls to handle icy waters and a fleet of onboard Zodiacs, but they also bring all the creature comforts a lovestruck couple could want.

All cabins are well-appointed and come with butler service, luxury bath products, flat-screen TVs and pillow menus. World-class spas and gourmet dining add glamour to the glitz of icy Antarctic vistas. Inclusive fares mean you never have to take out your wallet to buy a drink for your adventurous date or to take her on tour to meet a few penguins.

Viking: Best cruise for enrichment and culture

best couples cruise lines

Couples who share a love of learning will find the perfect home-away-from-home on a Viking cruise ship. The line prides itself on offering more of an intellectual experience than your average cruise.

Pre-cruise, Viking will give you a list of movies to watch and books to read to learn more about your cruise destination; you can discuss them with your plus-one on the way to your ship. On board, resident historians lecture about the important events that shaped the region in which you're traveling; some ships even offer planetariums. Ashore, included tours allow you to fully immerse yourself in each destination.

But it's not all academics. Viking thought long and hard about what makes an amazing cruise ship experience and created that ideal for you and your travel companion.

Well-thought-out cabins are spacious and comfortable with smart little touches like quiet-closing drawers and heated bathroom floors. Multiple included dining venues ensure that mealtime is never ho-hum; don't miss afternoon tea in the gorgeous Wintergarden. When the sun is out, enjoy a soak together in the aft infinity pool. No one will scold you if you whisper sweet nothings instead of discussing local politics.

6 Most Romantic Couples Cruise Itineraries to Book in 2023

Any cruise can be a couples cruise—if you’re going as a couple. But there’s often a significant difference in the onboard experience from one cruise to another, and some cruises are just built for romance. These cruises typically also offer a variety of dining options—from decadent meals in specialty restaurants to intimate repasts set up on stateroom balconies. Other enclaves like a dedicated adults-only pool or relaxation spaces (often available for a nominal fee) and expansive spas with a broad range of treatments are also staple amenities on romance-minded cruises, as are pampering indulgences like butler service or otherwise high staff-to-guest ratios.

As far as romantic destinations on a cruise itinerary, couples might spend their days exploring winding historic streets in a European capital, relaxing on a white-sand beach on a tropical island, or perusing the ship's library for deck chair reading materials on a transatlantic crossing—it’s all a matter of individual taste. Here are some of the most romantic couples cruises to book for 2023.

Princess ship in Cabo

Princess ship in Cabo

Princess Cruises

Itinerary: 7-Night Mexican Riviera

Departure: January to March; October to December 2023

Experience: The Mexican Riviera onboard Princess was the backdrop for multiple seasons of the original Love Boat television series. Nowadays, the sailings are on board the brand-new Discovery Princess, which can sound the Love Boat theme from the ship’s horn. When couples aren’t busy exploring Puerto Vallarta’s historic square or El Arco in Cabo San Lucas, the ship offers couples secluded dining options like waiter-served breakfast on their own balcony—a space that's included with every outside stateroom—or signature beverages and light meals at the adults-only enclave The Sanctuary.

Seabourn Cruises

Itinerary: 7-Day Classic Yachtsman’s Caribbean

Departure: January to March 2023

Experience: Cruising the Caribbean’s more secluded ports like Gustavia on St. Barts and Soper's Hole in the British Virgin Islands on a 300-stateroom yacht is romantic on its own—but pair that with Seabourn's amenities and shore excursions like “Caviar in the Surf,” where liveried stewards set up a surfboard bar stocked with caviar and chilled Champagne just steps into the surf off a white-sand beach, and one has a couple’s escape par excellence. For added indulgence, book a Wintergarden Suite with a glass-enclosed patio featuring a whirlpool and daybed. Suite Hosts and attendants make sure minibars are stocked with guests’ preferred beverages and draw pampering baths in lusciously outfitted marble tubs boasting Molton Brown amenities.

Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Edge garden

Celebrity Edge

Celebrity Cruises

Itinerary: 12-Night New Zealand

Departure: December 9, 2023

Experience: Sailing from and returning to Sydney Harbor is an iconic, romantic couples cruise experience by itself, but so too is hitting the best stops in Aotearoa (New Zealand), from the Art Deco haven of Napier to Milford Sound, where rainforests and waterfalls tumble down the sides of the fjord, and wildlife enthusiasts can spot fur seals, penguins, and dolphins from their Infinite Balconies onboard Celebrity Edge . Couples looking to splurge can book a suite for access to The Retreat, a separate lounge and sundeck, plus the private Luminae restaurant, featuring signature dishes by Chef Daniel Boulud. Public spaces on the ship are also chock full of commissioned art pieces by global artists.

Itinerary: Transatlantic crossing

Departure: January 2023; April to December 2023

Experience: There are no ports of call on Cunard's iconic transatlantic crossing , giving couples a week to enjoy the delights of the Queen Mary 2—the world’s last ocean liner and grand dame of sea-going glamour. Suite guests will dine in the single-seating Grill restaurants, with their own lounge and terrace, although afternoon tea in the Queens Room is a must-try on every crossing (don’t call it a cruise). On Gala Nights the two-deck high, chandelier-capped dance floor has a live band, ballgowns, and other fineries (guests can perfect their ballroom steps at a series of included daytime dance courses). Passengers can enrich their days checking out titles from the ship’s library and join the onboard book club for literary debates led by the ship’s librarian, explore the heavens at the ship’s planetarium, or attend lectures by invited experts.

The Best Things to Do on Paros&-the Greek Island Best Savored in Shoulder Season

Departure: April, July, August, September, November, December 2023

Experience: This two-week sailing makes for an ideal couples cruise, as it takes in some of French Polynesia’s most spectacular port calls: Fakarava has pink-sand beaches, and abundant shark life beloved by divers. Some ports in the faraway Marquesas are so secluded they don’t even have airports. Browse local wood carvings on Tahuata and visit artist Paul Gauguin’s frangipani-showered grave on Hiva Oa. Return on board each evening to musical backdrops courtesy of the ship’s Polynesian song-and-dance troupe. Banner spots like Bora Bora and Motu Mahana, the cruise line’s private islet off Taha’a, where a lavish beach picnic is set up, are featured in itineraries ; cruise fares include onboard Wi-Fi, select alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and even butler service in some stateroom categories.

Viking River Cruises

Itinerary: Romantic Danube

Departure: April to November 2023

Experience: By itself, Vienna is one of Europe’s most romantic cities , where lingering in one of the city’s many coffeehouses is just as celebrated as the exciting buzz of evening concerts featuring works by famous denizens like Mozart and Strauss. Voyages on Viking's Danube itinerary spend two nights in Vienna, plus there are other romantic stops like Budapest, Regensberg, and Pasau, ensure the itinerary would be an unforgettable couples cruise. An optional side trip to Salzburg to visit film sites from The Sound of Music and dine in Austria’s oldest restaurant are also on offer.

More tips for booking a couples cruise

What ship is most romantic.

Romance is subjective, of course, but in general, ships with beautifully appointed staterooms and public spaces with premiums placed on privacy and intimacy will rate high among romantic-minded cruisers. Look especially for ships with adults-only enclaves (often available for a nominal fee) and private dining experiences to maximize atmosphere on board.

What is the cheapest cruise you can take?

It depends on the cruise line, but cruise departures during the off-peak or shoulder seasons are often the most reasonably priced on a per person/per night basis. Any time schools are widely in session is typically a lower-demand period for cruise bookings, particularly in popular school break sun destinations like Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Mediterranean.

It’s time for fun on a Carnival Cruise Line!

Some of the family-friendly activities are just as fun to do sans kids, such as taking a spin on the SkyRide. You’ll pedal your way over the open ocean in a go-mobile.

The Cloud 9 Spa creates an opposite type of experience, as you can treat yourself and your partner to a trip to the Hydrotherapy Pool (on some Carnival ships), thermal suites, body wraps, facials, and massages.

I’m only just scratching the surface. A romantic trip on a Carnival Cruise also includes access to The Golden Jubilee, a part of the Carnival Celebration ship that opened in 1972. It has a vintage atmosphere, cocktails aplenty, history-inspired small dishes, live performances, and undeniably charming décor.

Serenity is Carnival’s adults-only retreat with chaise lounges, a bar, and a quiet atmosphere perfect for relaxing.

The staterooms are stunning, with suites and rooms available depending on how much space you require. Your room may overlook a balcony or provide ocean views. Specialty rooms like the Cloud 9 Spa and Havana are extra-special.

The Cloud 9 Spa stateroom includes luxurious comfy bathrobes, high-quality bath products, cozy slippers, free fitness classes, spa treatment discounts, unlimited trips to the thermal suite, and priority spa reservations.

Further complementing your Carnival experience is varied dining from major names in the culinary world, such as Guy Fieri, Emeril Lagasse, Rudi Sodamin, and more.

Hawaii is a little slice of paradise on the American coast. Your stop via Carnival will include a luau, a trip to a volcanic mountain, and beach access from Honolulu to Kona and Maui.

Or perhaps your Asia cruise will take you to Vietnam, with its bustle and multi-layered history. Spend time in Ho Chi Minh City, where soaring glass skyscrapers sit alongside ancient temples wafting incense.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise

Norway, one of the best cruises for couples

Pulpit Rock, Norway

Sailing along the glorious Norwegian fjords against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains is undeniably romantic, especially in summer, when the days are long and the wildflower meadows are in bloom.

There are experiences to be had here that you won’t forget. From Stavanger , join a hiking tour to Pulpit Rock, a square block of stone jutting precariously over the glassy Lysefjord, with a 1,980-foot drop.

Couple exploring Briksdal Glacier, Norway

Briksdal Glacier, Norway

From Olden , at the end of the Nordfjord, join a tour to Briksdal Glacier, the ice streaked with blue and aquamarine, or head out on a RIB to catch crayfish. Back on dry land, you’ll be rewarded with your catch cooked over an open fire, served with crusty fresh bread and mayo.

Alesund is another treat, distinguished from other Norwegian towns by its proliferation of Art Nouveau architecture. Explore the town on foot, then join a tour to Trollstigen, one of the most hair-raising roads in Norway , with 11 switchbacks and views of plunging waterfalls and sheer rock walls.

Galapagos Cruise

Couple hiking in the Galapagos

Hiking in the Galapagos

For wildlife-loving couples, a cruise to the Galapagos islands , scattered across the equator some 560 miles off the coast of Ecuador, is the ultimate bucket list experience.

There’s nowhere on earth like this. You’ll spend your days hiking, snorkeling , kayaking, and exploring on the ship’s rigid inflatables, always in the company of an expert wildlife guide.

Whichever itinerary you choose, you’ll see the extraordinary creatures that are endemic to the islands, from craggy marine and land iguanas to Galapagos sea lions and tiny Galapagos penguins.

Couple preparing to snorkel in the Galapagos

Snorkeling in the Galapagos

Spot blue-footed boobies performing their curious courtship dance, and snorkel among graceful sea turtles, which nest on Galapagos beaches . Swim among black-tipped reef sharks and admire the spectacular shoals of fish in every color of the rainbow.

The landscapes here inspire romance, too. You’ll see smoldering volcanoes, ancient craters, cliffs streaked with mineral deposits, and pristine beaches in every shade, from red to white and even sparkling green. At night, lie on deck and gaze at the heavens; with no air pollution here, the canopy of stars is truly spectacular.

Bahamas Cruise

Pink facade of Atlantis in Nassau, Bahamas

Atlantis in Nassau, Bahamas

You can’t beat a romantic getaway on a short cruise to the Bahamas , which will transport you to a world of soft sand beaches, glittering seas, and thrilling experiences.

In Nassau , head for Aquaventure at the glitzy Atlantis Paradise Island. Fly down the waterslides before admiring the marine life of the Marine Habitat, where you can see sharks, moray eels, rays, and sea turtles.

Or admire the island’s architecture on a walking tour that takes you to the candy-pink Parliament Building and the limestone-cut Queen’s Staircase.

Stingray spotted in Honeymoon Harbor in Bimini, Bahamas

Honeymoon Harbor in Bimini, Bahamas

Sleepy Bimini lends itself to doing very little, with powdery beaches and coral reefs to enjoy. But adventurous couples have plenty of options. Join a tour to snorkel with reef sharks, or try sport fishing.

Take a boat to pristine Honeymoon Harbor, where you can hand-feed docile stingrays. Or head out on a local fishing boat to learn how conch, a local delicacy, is harvested.

CocoCay, one of the best cruises for couples

CocoCay, Bahamas

The award-winning CocoCay is a dream for any couple, with its spectacular waterpark, limpid lagoon, and glorious beaches. Head to the adults-only Hideaway Beach and sip cocktails to a soundtrack of chill-out music.

Or elevate your experience at Coco Beach Club, where the ultimate romantic experience is to spend the day in a private overwater cabana, the first in the Bahamas. An attendant will keep you supplied with refreshments, and you can glide down your own slide into the crystal-clear water to cool off.

The 7 Most Romantic Cruises for Couples to Take in 2024

Explore river and ocean adventures for memories that will last a lifetime.

Planning the ultimate couple’s getaway? As much as we love exploring Napa , Palm Beach , and the Hudson Valley , there’s something to be said about investing in an international vacation. Before shelling out for a boutique hotel, though, consider booking a cruise that can be just as romantic (yes, really). We're not talking about old-school cruises with cramped rooms, mediocre buffets, BINGO nights and overcrowded pool decks. These luxury cruises are here to blow your mind with amenities such as private butler service, world-class spas, delicious cuisine (hello, 24/7 complimentary caviar!) and palatial cabins with expansive ocean views, private jacuzzis and more.

Whether your idea of the perfect vacation is a European river adventure, an adults-only South Pacific cruise, or a party-all-night Caribbean rendezvous, there’s a cruise for you. To prove it, we rounded up the seven best cruises for couples. Check out these romantic options, below.

crystal cruises veranda best cruises for couples

If you’re looking to book a beautiful vacation on and off the ship, Crystal is worth considering. In addition to well-appointed palatial suites and a stunning spa (complete with massages, facials, naturopathic healing, and gentleman’s grooming services), Crystal is a foodie’s paradise. With nine distinct culinary options ranging from American and Italian to Japanese and Peruvian food, there’s something for everyone.

When booking a Crystal cruise for your couple’s getaway, go all out with a Veranda or Penthouse suite. That way, you’ll have plenty of space, as well as the opportunity to take in the open seas from your very own balcony. If you’re toying with the idea of taking a sabbatical and making the absolute most of it, Crystal Cruises does have a World Cruise scheduled to set sail in 2025. The 123-night cruise will explore 62 destinations and 31 countries for what’s sure to be the trip of a lifetime.

Virgin Voyages

virgin voyages veranda best cruises for couples

If your idea of the perfect couple’s vacation is one without kids, Virgin Voyages is the way to go. With destinations in the Caribbean, Europe, and the South Pacific—just to name a few—Virgin Voyages offers unforgettable oceanic excursions via its four-ship fleet.

For couples in the U.S., consider hopping about The Scarlet Lady, a large-scale ocean liner with a 2,762 sailor capacity. As the name suggests, The Scarlet Lady is a ship with decor and experiences drenched in sultry red. When you set sail on The Scarlet Lady (or any Virgin Voyages ship), you can anticipate all-inclusive cuisine, non-alcoholic beverages, group workouts, and Wi-Fi. While the beverage package is an additional cost, the adults-only landscape makes it worth it.

As for the cabins, they’re all chic but the Sea Terrace or Rockstar Quarters are the way to go for a truly unforgettable couple’s escape. If you go with the latter, you’ll even have your own private terrace jacuzzi.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

scenic luxury cruises and tours veranda best cruises for couples

While ocean cruises are most common, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours makes a case for river excursions, too. That said, if you and your partner love river life and taking in the city shores, exploring new cities and towns as you go, you’ll fall head over heels for Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours.

In addition to dozens of oceanic adventures, the cruise line offers cruise explorations of nine of the world’s most iconic rivers, including the Seine, Rhine, Mekong, and Bordeaux rivers. If you ask us, it doesn’t get much better than the Scenic Gem, which winds up and down the Seine over the course of eight days and features stops in Paris, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Normandy.

One thing to note: Since this river cruise is all about luxurious sleep set-ups, delicious food, and awe-inspiring excursions, there aren’t as many wellness and leisure amenities aboard the ship (though, there is a small gym). That said, the all-inclusive cruise line offers butler service for all suites to boot, so if your goal is to make your partner feel pampered, it’s worth looking into.

Viking Cruises

If you love the idea of cruising a river with your partner but are hoping for a lengthier aquatic adventure with striking cabins, Viking Cruises is the way to go. Although the cruise line offers a variety of oceanic cruises, the river excursions are what it’s known for. To make the most of the experience, we suggest going all out with a Veranda or Explorer Suite (both of which have balconies for you and your beloved to enjoy) for the Grand European Tour , which explores 13 cities and four countries across 15 days, with the option to personalize the experience with three pre-cruise and four post-cruise overnights.

Best of all, the trip comes with 12 guided tours, so you’ll be immersed in the culture of each of the cities you visit. (FYI: If you’re looking for a domestic cruise, Viking also has a Mississippi cruise which explores the river for eight to 22 days, depending on which option you book.)

Explore Viking Cruises

silversea cruises veranda best cruises for couples

Silversea is dubbed the “crown jewel” of the Royal Caribbean Group. The all-inclusive cruise line self-proclaimed the label but with an offering so vast, we’d say it has earned it, too. Aboard Silversea ships, guests can enjoy around-the-clock gourmet dining, scrumptious craft cocktails and bubbly Champagne, butler service, and 24/7 access to complimentary caviar.

Suffice to say, it’s a couple’s paradise. All you have to do is pick which destination and duration aligns best with your dream vacation vision. As for the ship, the Silver Dawn is a popular pick, especially with its all-new, ultra-chic spa, OTIVM. Whatever you do, when booking, consider upgrading to a Superior or Deluxe Veranda Suite to make the most of your time on the water.

Explore Silversea Cruises

Royal Caribbean

royal caribbean icon of the seas veranda best cruises for couples

Icon of the Seas is one of the latest ships to join Royal Caribbean’s fleet and while it still offers plenty of family-friendly, price-conscious staterooms, the vessel is a dream for vivid voyagers with a passion for great food, entertaining nightlife, and tranquil spa experiences. Complete with a sports and arcade bar, karaoke bar, a casino, and an English pub, the Icon of the Seas has plenty to offer night owl couples looking to explore the Caribbean.

Of course, it also has an impressive seven pools, not to mention the largest waterpark at sea. While you might think that that means kids will be everywhere you look, the ship actually has an area dedicated for families, as well as adult-only aqua escapes. As for the cabins, they’re spacious, well-lit, and equipped with floor-to-ceiling views of the ocean (if you book an ocean-view room). If you ask us, though, the ultimate couple’s vacation calls for upgrading to a Sunset Corner Suite.

Windstar Cruises

windstar cruises veranda best cruises for couples

Whether you’re in search of peaceful tranquility, unbelievable gastronomic delights, invigorating on-shore excursions, or merely a more intimate small-scale cruise experience, Windstar Cruises is worth considering. The six-ship fleet features smaller capacities, each carrying no more than a few hundred guests. For the most intimate experience, you’ll want to book the Wind Star or Wind Spirit, which both carry no more than 148 guests.

Just keep in mind, since these are smaller ships, there aren’t balcony rooms—just ocean view. Still, with destinations in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and more, the cultural experiences, and the James Beard-partnered culinary program will all but make up for it.

The Most Romantic Cruises to Book Now

Planning your honeymoon or an anniversary trip? These are the most romantic cruises to take with your significant other.

best couples cruise lines

If you asked me what the most romantic trip I could take with my fiancé would be, my answer would be simple: A trip he planned. For me, facilitating the logistics of our trips is what takes me out of the moment. And that's why I think cruises are inherently perfect for a romantic getaway : Everything is planned for you. The cruise line sets the itinerary for you, including the cities you'll visit, the excursions you'll partake in, and which days you'll spend relaxing by the pool. Plus, if you book an all-inclusive cruise , you won't even have to think about taking your wallet out.

One of the most intimate elements of travel is sharing a new experience with someone you love. And a cruise sails you right up to those new experiences, giving you the chance to see several exciting ports (why choose one place when you can visit several honeymoon destinations during one trip?). Not only that, the luxury of the vessel ups the romance factor, too. From private dining options to couples massages, there are endless opportunities for you and your partner to reconnect. Here are some romantic cruises for couples that suit every travel style.

Seven Seas Explorer , Regent Seven Seas Cruises

For the adventurous couple, Regent Seven Seas Cruises takes care of all the logistics — from round-trip business-class flights to unlimited shore excursions — so you can focus on soaking in the culture together. For an unconventional date night, the Seven Seas Explorer offers Gourmet Explorer Tours, during which you'll explore the food scene in a particular port and then make use of local ingredients in an onboard cooking class.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: Travel from Bangkok to Bali onboard the 738-passenger Seven Seas Explorer and enjoy cruising in the Gulf of Thailand, with stops in Singapore and the Thai island of Koh Samui.

Regatta , Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises prides itself on offering an elegant ambiance and the Regatta's custom design and nearly 1.6:1 crew-to-traveler ratio only enhance the luxury experience. The suites and veranda staterooms have original art, ocean views, and private terraces. For a romantic day on the ship, start at Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center and finish the evening with a wine tasting in Horizons, the Regatta 's observation lounge.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: The 694-guest Regatta's voyage from Auckland to Sydney takes you on a two-week tour of the best of New Zealand and Australia. Along the way, you'll stop in New Zealand's Bay of Islands and Otago Peninsula, where you can spot penguins and albatrosses.

Paul Gauguin , Paul Gauguin Cruises

The flagship vessel of Paul Gauguin Cruises feels exclusive and effortlessly luxurious. The 332-passenger ship only visits smaller ports that larger ships can't access and most of the rooms have private, oceanfront balconies. For couples looking for a new activity that will bring them closer and help build trust in their relationship, the Paul Gauguin offers PADI scuba diving programs and certification.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: Paul Gauguin Cruises offers a Tahiti and Society Islands seven-night cruise. It includes a day on the company's own private islet, Motu Mahana, and of course, a glamorous stop in Bora Bora.

Emerald Princess, Princess Cruises

The entertainment is endless on the Emerald Princess — from a casino to live theatre to night clubs — but few things beat spending the day with your significant other at the saltwater pools and swirling hot tubs. The ship can accommodate more than 3,000 passengers, but there are plenty of places to share an intimate moment with your partner. For a romantic high-point of your trip, try the Chef's Table Experience, an extravagant multi-course dinner created by the ship’s executive chef.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: Their 16-day Hawaiian Islands Cruise leaving from Seattle feels like a honeymoon, whether you have no plans for marriage or you're celebrating 20 years together. You'll get a grand tour of Hawaii, stopping at Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island.

Viking Venus , Viking Ocean Cruises

This exclusive ship carries only 930 people, which means you'll barely have to share the floor-to-ceiling window views of the snow-capped Nordic mountains. It's an all-veranda ship, so every room is set for romance with a private balcony.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: For a romantic winter getaway, the Viking Venus sails in search of the northern lights , cruising the North Sea and Norwegian Sea from England to Norway. The seclusion you and your significant other will find sailing through waters few travelers get to explore is unprecedented. Your stops in Norway include cities north of the Arctic Circle such as Tromsø, home to the northernmost botanical garden in the world. And each Arctic night, you and your love are of course scouting for the aurora borealis.

American Queen , American Queen Voyages

The American Queen transports you back in time to the mid-19th century. The spacious decks are a picturesque spot to take in the river views together, and the staff exudes Southern hospitality and charm. The 417-passenger riverboat is ideal for couples who want to explore their own backyard rather than booking an international flight. Plus, their onboard jazz and blues concerts make for an extra-special evening.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: American Queen sails from New Orleans to Memphis. After two days in NOLA, you'll set sail on the Mississippi to visit several other cities along the river.

Zuiderdam , Holland America Line

For the artistic couple, Holland America Line takes great care to decorate their interiors with enviable art and antiques. On board this 1,964-passenger vessel, you'll find plenty of activities. If you're looking for a romantic cruise but can't leave the kids at home, Zuiderdam is a ship that caters to both adults and kids, with the Greenhouse Spa & Salon for you and your S.O., and Club Hal for the children.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: Find love in the Caribbean on Holland America Line's Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. With stops in the Curaçao, Colombia, and Costa Rica, the cruise satisfies your craving for a romantic beach getaway, new cities, and a jungle adventure in one fell swoop.

Evrima , The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Christopher Cypert/Courtesy of Ritz-Carlton

With its six restaurants, six bars, and two pools on board — plus plenty of over-the-top hotel amenities — The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Evrima is basically an all-inclusive luxury resort at sea. Couples can look forward to sipping reserve-list wine while listening to live jazz; indulging in a deep-tissue massage; or relaxing by the infinity pool. All 149 suites have private terraces, giving you and your partner your own space to soak in the sights — whether you're cruising around the Mediterranean or sailing to Caribbean islands. Guests are assigned a personal concierge when they step on board, ensuring that every detail of their romantic getaway is planned to perfection.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like:   Evrima offers five-, seven-, 10-, and 12-night voyages. A five-night voyage from Athens, for example, gives cruisers the chance to explore the ancient ruins of Ephesus, Turkey, before sailing to Santorini and Milos in Greece, where couples can take in spectacular views, explore historical sites, or hit the beach, before heading back to Athens.

Scarlet Lady , Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

A screaming toddler can instantly kill the mood on a romantic cruise. This is where Virgin Voyages’ adults-only Scarlet Lady comes into play. With 11 eateries, 9 bars, and a two-story nightclub, the 2,750-passenger ship is geared toward couples who love to party as much as they like to sightsee. Most of the cabins have balconies with hammocks, and couples who opt for one of the RockStar suites will enjoy additional perks like priority boarding and access to a personal agent who handles all your day-to-day needs. Couples can indulge in alternative activities like getting inked at the onboard tattoo parlor or lying back on daybeds at the outdoor lounge The Dock to stargaze at sea.  What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: On the four-night Fire & Sunset Soirées cruise, the fun begins in Miami, before cruising down to Key West where you can explore by bike, catamaran, or kayak. The boat then stops at Virgin Voyages’ private beach club in Bimini, Bahamas, where cruisers can opt to relax by the pool or spot dolphins in the wild before the ship heads back to Miami.

AmaLucia , Adventures by Disney and AmaWaterways

For couples looking for a slow-paced epicurean adventure through Europe, a river cruise with Adventures by Disney and AmaWaterways could strike the perfect balance between fun-filled and tranquil. Gone are the days of river cruising being only for retirees. New itineraries are jam-packed with activities, from wine tastings and pub tours to exploring towns by bike. The 156-passenger AmaLucia is an ideal vessel for the experience, thanks to its twin-balcony staterooms, a fleet of complimentary bikes, and a sun-deck pool with a swim-up bar.

What Your Itinerary Might Look Like: On Adventures by Disney’s eight-day Rhine River Cruise , you’ll depart from Basel, Switzerland, and sail along the Rhine River while stopping in France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Activities might include a macaron-making class, a pub tour, or a visit to medieval wine caves. You’ll disembark in Amsterdam, where you and your significant other can continue exploring or fly home after a week of wining and dining.

Norwegian Cruise Line , Norway

Cruise ship going by mountains

It's a no-brainer that Norwegian Cruise Line is best for any Norway-focused sails, and our favorite is this 12-day trip aboard the Norweigan Star. It departs from Portsmouth in England, and en route up you'll check off Scotland, Norway, and Iceland, three superb destinations for vast natural landscapes. Hike and bike the trails at each stop, or delve deeper with opt-in excursions, such as whale watching and kayaking the fjords. One for the outdoorsy couple, or those who simply want to wake up to magical snow-capped mountains and island castles every day.

Virgin Voyages , The Mediterranean

Virgin Voyages cruise ship

Tick off multiple countries in just one trip, and party while you do it. Virgin Voyages shook up the cruising industry when it launched in 2021, attracting a whole new generation of sailors (read: adults who don't take themselves too seriously, but want the premium treatment). True to the Virgin brand and Sir Richard Branson's joie de vivre, imagine festival-style entertainment, nightclubs, and a club tier serving complimentary champagne. The seven-day "Irresistible Med" itinerary goes from Barcelona and across the French Riviera. It then heads to Italy. Couples will soak up Southern Europe's golden beaches and celebrate with an overnight in Ibiza, holy grail of Mediterranean nightlife. Night owls, this is your cruise. Similar region itineraries include Greece and Croatia .

CroisiEurope , Southern Africa

CroisiEurope cruise ship

If French food speaks your love language, board a CroisiEurope. The river cruise line operates the African Dream and the Zimbabwean Dream, both with just six classic suites and two suites with a balcony for an ultra-intimate experience. The nine-day African Dream takes place half on land, and half on a lake. Guests enjoy a historic city tour of Johannesburg, move on to a safari lodge in Namibia to safari in the famed Chobe National Park, and then take small planes to a ship in Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, and Victoria Falls. It's the best way to see both the Big Five on land and the Big Five marine mammals.

Windstar , Tahiti

Cabin on the cruise ship

Snorkeling in crystal clear waters and watching the sunset with coconut cocktails are part of the fabulous Windstar parcel when you sign up for their seven-day Tahiti cruise . Guests will sail on a handsome Wind Spirit yacht from Papeete, bouncing from island to island to frolic on white-sand beaches, and swim among tropical sea life. You'll immerse yourselves in Tahitian culture too, thanks to discovery events in Bora Bora, and sample delicious local bounty.

4.0 Star Rating | Read Reviews

Celebrity Cruises , Antarctica

A trip to the world's least visited continent is a once-in-a-lifetime (if you're lucky) experience, and due to its difficulty of reach and navigation, it's wise to do it via cruise. Celebrity's 14-night expedition sees couples picked up from Buenos Aires, and sail to Argentina and Chile before arriving in Antarctica. Gaze at dramatic landscapes, glide through iceberg-strewn waters inhabited by communities of penguins, seals, and whales, and learn about the rich history of the continent. Due to extreme weather conditions, cruises depart only in the summer months of January and February.

Princess Cruises , Japan

There's no need to Google Translate bullet train signs with a cruise to the land of the rising sun. Princess Cruises' Japan itineraries depart from Yokohama, right next to Tokyo, stopping at the ancient city of Nikko to see breathtaking shrines amidst natural woodland, and Kagoshima, famed for onsen (hot springs). You'll sample the freshest sushi at every port, and all routes, including the eight-day circle , feature one visit to South Korea, so you can try kimbap (Korean sushi) too.

Disney Cruise Line , Australia

Disney cruise ship

A Disney Cruise may not be for everyone, but couples obsessed with the house of mouse will be afloat on these fairy-tale cabins. The line has a number of sails departing across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne , and Brisbane, so you can check off sites like the Opera House before immersing yourselves in all things Disney. That includes live shows, character meet and greets, and movie screenings. Note: these cruises are heavy with kids, but couples who frequent theme parks will be used to it.

Royal Caribbean , The Bahamas

Cruise powerhouse, Holland America offers an Alaskan vacation made easy. Guests depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, such as on this 7-day itinerary which will take you through the 49th state's serene seas to Glacier Bay to hear the creaks and groans of "living" ice, and the Tracy Arm Inlet where bears, whales and mountain goats roam. The Best Cruise Lines For Adults & Couples

Are you a couple looking for the best cruise line for your vacation? There’s a big difference in cruising when its just adults versus setting sail with an entire family… and it’s more than just wondering if the ship has waterslides for the kiddos.

In fact, most adults and couples looking for a cruise want something completely different than those family cruisers.

Of course, that means adult couples looking for the perfect cruise need to take a hard look at a number of things to determine which line is best for them. From the ship’s atmosphere to your other passengers, there are a number of things that can have an impact on your enjoyment.

For most people, we suggest thinking about all of the following when picking the right cruise line for their trip…

In This Article...

Things to Consider for Adult & Couple Cruises

best couples cruise lines

Having Adults-Only Space : Yes, there are adult-focused cruise lines. But before you simply book one of those, know that they tend to be more expensive than mass market lines. As well, they don’t have near the number of ships or departure ports as larger lines that also welcome families.

In other words, unless you have no problem flying to a port and have a flexible schedule, adult-focused lines might be out of the question.

That’s why it’s smart to instead focus on ships that have appealing adults-only areas. These days most ships have them, but they can vary widely. For instance, on many Royal Caribbean ships there is a Solarium area that is a covered pool designed only for adults. That’s appealing to some, but if you want something that’s more open air, then you might like Carnival’s Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. This is open-air (allowing you to get some sun) with hot tubs and private seating. However, there is often no pool.

In other words, before you book your trip, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons of any adults-only area the ship may have.

Ship Atmosphere : Just like any hotel, every cruise line has a different atmosphere. Some are fun and outgoing while others are more reserved and stately. It goes without saying that matching up the atmosphere of the cruise line with what you’re looking for in a vacation can make a major impact on your enjoyment.

So how are you supposed to know what a cruise line’s atmosphere is like? Well, you can certainly get some insight from reviews of cruises, but we suggest something even simpler.

Take a look at any cruise line’s website to get a good idea of the image and atmosphere it tries to project. Are the images of families enjoying themselves? Or maybe it’s of a couple enjoying a glass of wine and a sunset? You can get a good hint of the sort of atmosphere on a ship through these marketing materials.

Things for Adults to Do : Part of the fun of a cruise is that there is typically lots to do on the ship. And each new cruise ship brings along new features on board, whether it be rock climbing walls, or go-kart tracks, or even roller coasters . But for many adults and couples, it can seem like many of these things are solely for families or younger kids. Sure, there can appeal to some adults, but not everyone is interested in the biggest and newest waterslide or similar attraction.

That’s why the best cruise lines and ships for adults come with plenty for grown-ups to do as well, outside of those headline-grabbing new features. Whether it be entertainment and shows on board, or more options for social gatherings on the ship — or the aforementioned adults-only areas, you want to find a cruise line that offers plenty for grown-ups to do… and not just families.

Your Other Passengers : It’s only logical that sailing with other people like you is more fun. It wouldn’t make sense for a young couple looking for a romantic vacation to set sail on a Disney cruise loaded with families that have young kids.

Of course, you can’t control who else is on the ship. And no cruise ship is full of passengers that are all the same. That said, the type of trip you take, the time of year, and the cruise line you sail can have a big influence on who you cruise with.

Trips that are longer in length (one week or more) tend to have an older crowd with fewer families and younger passengers than shorter cruises. Trips that sail when school is in session will have fewer kids than trips during the summer or Spring Break. And luxury cruise lines (Celebrity, Princess, etc.) tend to cater to an older crowd.

All of this said, no couple is the same. That means no one cruise line is perfect for every adult. So instead of suggesting one cruise line for everyone, we’ve offered up our top suggestion based on several different groups of people. Keep in mind that it’s hard to go wrong with any cruise, but these lines represent our top picks for each situation.

Best Cruise Line for a Young and Active Couples

best couples cruise lines

Headed out on a honeymoon? Or maybe you are just a younger couple that wants to have a tropical vacation? If so, then your wants in a cruise line are likely very different than some other couples.

If you fall into the young and active group, then we would suggest a trip aboard Royal Caribbean — preferably a larger and newer ship that’s been built in the past ten years.

Why Royal Caribbean? After all, isn’t this considered a family cruise line?

There’s no doubt that the line caters to everyone — families included. But they also offer a lot for younger adults and couples to love. First, there are always a number of active things to do on the ship, from rock climbing to the Flow-Rider standing wave to waterslides and more. If you dread the idea of just having to sit by the pool while at sea, then this is the line for you (although you can certainly do that too).

Furthermore, the adults-only Solarium is a great place to hang out and avoid any kids or families on board. It’s usually covered, so the pool and surrounding area is warm and you don’t have to worry about the outside weather.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere of Royal Caribbean ships is always fun and classy without being too wild nor too stuffy. Your other passengers range everything from families (fewer if you sail during the school year) all the way to older couples. There are also tons of places to eat and drink on the ship — including lots of different types of food for any appetite.

Best Cruise Line For Adults Wanting a Real “Adult” Experience

best couples cruise lines

Virgin Voyages burst on the scene a couple of years  ago in a big way… and for good reason. First and foremost, Virgin is an adults-only cruise line. So if you’re wanting a cruise that is focused solely on adults, then this is your best bet.

Being adults-only, the cruise line can do things that just aren’t possible on a traditional cruise line. That includes everything from shows with cabaret-styled performances to areas where you can actually sunbathe topless. There are yoga classes, hammocks on the balcony, and some killer parties that you just won’t find a match for on mainstream lines.

But it’s also different in other ways. For one, things like gratuities and all food are included in the fare — no buffet is on the ship. Wi-fi is also included. Those headaches that can cause a typical cruise to feel like you have to pay up to get the full experience just aren’t there.

Maybe you’re the sort of person that has been turned off by stereotypical cruise. If so, Virgin Voyages might be just the thing… and not a kid in sight.

Best Cruise Line For Romance

best couples cruise lines

Adults looking for a romantic getaway can do worse than setting sail with Princess Cruises . In fact, the line has an entire section of its website dedicated to travelers looking for romance.

So what makes Princess a winner for couples looking to enjoy each other? First, there is more of a focus on romance than with other cruise lines. For example, if you’re looking for fun and romantic, there’s the Love Boat Disco Deck Party. For others, there are cooking demonstrations and wine-tastings. Food is also a big emphasis, with a number of romantic venues to where you feel like you are dining alone… despite being on a ship with plenty of other passengers.

And while there are places to get married on pretty much any cruise ship, Princess also has anniversary, engagement and honeymoon packages (complete with couples spa services and champagne) available.

Furthermore, the more sophisticated atmosphere of Princess ships mean that fewer families set sail on the line.

Best Cruise Line for Older Couples

best couples cruise lines

The sort of vacation you want as a couple at 60 years old is likely a little different than what you wanted at 30 years old. In fact, you likely want something a little quieter and more luxurious.

For those more mature couples, we’d suggest looking at a cruise with Celebrity — especially aboard their newest Edge-class ships.

Celebrity is a luxury-level cruise line. The emphasis is on stately design, high-end service, and delicious food. Entertainment is geared toward adults, including shows focused on Motown, cabaret shows, and even croquet and bocce ball on the ship’s Lawn Club. Looking to do shopping? The newest ships features Bulgari and Cartier stores, in addition to others.

If you want even higher-end, then look to The Retreat. This is a “resort within a resort” that is its own private spot with upgraded rooms, private restaurant, it’s own lounge and sun deck. These rooms even come with drink package, wi-fi, and tips included. Along with a team there to make sure you cruise is absolutely perfect.

Put simply, Celebrity isn’t for everyone. If you are traveling with kids, it’s likely you’ll want a different line. But if you are a distinguished couple wanting to enjoy the finer things in life, Celebrity should be exactly what you’re looking for.

Honorable Mention for Adult Cruising

best couples cruise lines

One major cruise line deserves a mention for being ideal for adults. It just so happens that in our categories, they were slightly topped by another line each time. Norwegian Cruise Line, however, offers an amazing amount for adults to love — especially when sailing on their newest Prima-class cruise ships.

For one, NCL offers a lot to do on its ships that will keep active couples engaged. You can drive go-karts, take a plunge on some extreme slides, and more. The programming is adult focused, with a number of Broadway shows brought to life on the cruise ship. High-end dining? Of course.

What might appeal heavily to adults is that the cruise line — especially with its newest ships — is focused heavily on style and design. Instead of a cruise ship, new ships look more like a high-end contemporary hotel.

While other lines might take the lead in specific categories, Norwegian is a fantastic all-around option for adults.

And it’s no secret that older cruisers consider Princess the best couples cruise host.

Recommended Princess Cruises:

  • 7 Night Eastern & Western Caribbean

For an Elegant Yet Fun Getaway: Celebrity Cruises

Here’s a little-known secret: Celebrity Cruises actually caters to couples rather than families. That means most of the spaces onboard have been designed with romantic trips in mind.

Onboard a Celebrity ship, you can dine with your partner at upscale restaurants with impressive menus and eye-catching wine lists. When you’re not exploring your destinations together, you can lie back together on a double bed on the pool deck or in the solarium. You’ll have fun, of course, but you’ll also have plenty of those magical moments that take a couples cruise to the next level.

For Adventurous Couples: Royal Caribbean Cruises

Not every couple wants to spend hours lovingly gazing into each other’s eyes. Some bond through unique experiences and active challenges. For those couples, Royal Caribbean cruises is a no-brainer. This cruise line is known for thrilling onboard experiences, including a surf simulator, a skydiving simulator, rock climbing, ziplining, the North Star observation capsule, escape rooms, water slides, and laser tag for starters!

And it’s not just onboard activities that can appease adventurous couples. Out-of-this-world dining experiences such as Wonderland (the Alice in Wonderland-themed restaurant) and Teppanyaki (Japanese food paired with showmanship) are anything but dull. And no couples cruise would be complete without entertainment. Luckily, Royal Caribbean dazzles with ice shows, AquaTheater shows, and Broadway musicals.

Recommended Royal Caribbean Cruises:

  • 5 Night Bahamas & Perfect Day (Cruise Line Private Island)
  • 7 Night Western Caribbean

For the Laid-Back Couple: Norwegian Cruise Line

Not a big believer that a couples cruise has to be planned and strategized down to the minute? For couples who like to go with the flow, Norwegian Cruise Line is perfect. Freestyle dining means eating when and where you want to. Promotions like Free at Sea give you access to free drinks, specialty dining, WiFi, shore excursions, and more, so there’s less to think about and more to enjoy. And Norwegian cruises are known for their chic adults-only spaces, so you and your honey can enjoy some much-needed peace and quiet.

For the Couple on a Budget: Carnival Cruises

Having a smaller budget doesn’t mean you have to forgo a romantic vacation. Carnival cruises are budget-friendly and a ton of fun for adults looking to save some bucks. And you won’t have a downgraded experience by any means.

Check out the celebrity-inspired dining options, including restaurants by Guy Fieri, Emeril Lagasse, Rudi Sodamin, and even Shaq! When you’re looking for low-key moments, head to Serenity Retreat, the 21-and-up outdoor space where you can relax and recline under the sun. And for an upcharge you can celebrate your honeymoon or anniversary with a little something special, from decorations in your room to champagne to treats like cookie plates or heart-shaped cakes.

For the Couple Without Kids: Virgin Voyages

The secret to success with younger adults for Virgin Voyages cruises is that they cater to the 18-and-up crowd only. That creates the perfect environment for couples who want to reconnect without the noise and rowdiness of little ones. For the most part, you’ll dine, drink, and rub elbows with 20-something and 30-something couples. And you’ll never get bored of the dining options. Since specialty restaurants are included, you get to try different cuisines every night.

For those moments when you need a break from indulging, you and your partner can take advantage of an array of free fitness classes—or simply spend a few soothing hours in the spa.

Key Takeaways

  • Consider comfort and accessibility: Choose cruise lines with cabins designed for easy access and equipped with safety features like grab bars and non-slip flooring.
  • Look for onboard medical facilities: Ensure the cruise has a well-equipped medical center and trained staff to handle any health issues that may arise during the voyage.
  • Opt for luxury and comfort-oriented cruises: Select cruise lines known for upscale accommodations, personalized service, and exclusive perks for a lavish experience.
  • Explore small ship and river cruises: Consider smaller ships or river cruises for a more intimate, personalized, and culturally enriching voyage.
  • Adventure and exploration cruises: For adventurous senior couples, look for cruise lines offering expeditions to unique destinations with expert guides and a balance of adventure and comfort.
  • Compare costs and value: Evaluate all-inclusive packages for a stress-free vacation or budget-friendly options that provide a great experience within your financial constraints.

Understanding the Needs of Senior Couples on a Cruise

When choosing the best cruise line for senior couples, it’s crucial to consider their unique requirements to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience tailored to their needs. Here’s what you should know:

Comfort and Accessibility Features

On a cruise designed for senior couples, comfort and accessibility are paramount. Look for cabins that offer easy access to essential areas like dining halls, entertainment venues, and other amenities. These cabins should also have grab bars, non-slip flooring, and shower seats to enhance safety. Additionally, elevators with clear signage and minimal walking distances can make navigation easier for seniors with mobility issues.

Example: Imagine having a spacious cabin with a balcony overlooking the ocean, equipped with handrails in the bathroom for added security. The hallways are wide enough for a walker or wheelchair, ensuring smooth movement around the ship.

Onboard Medical Facilities

Ensuring that the cruise line has adequate onboard medical facilities is essential for senior couples. Look for cruises with medical centers staffed by trained professionals who can provide medical assistance if needed. It’s also beneficial to check if the ship has facilities to manage common health issues, such as pharmacies for prescription medications. Knowing that medical help is easily accessible can provide peace of mind during the voyage.

Example: Picture a cruise ship equipped with a fully functional medical center, complete with emergency response capabilities and a team of doctors and nurses on standby 24/7. Whether it’s a minor ailment or a more serious medical concern, knowing that help is just a call away can alleviate any health-related worries.

Evaluating the Top Cruise Lines for Senior Couples

Luxury and comfort oriented cruises.

When looking for the best cruise line for senior couples, opt for luxury cruises that provide exceptional comfort and personalized service. These cruises usually feature spacious cabins with premium amenities, such as plush bedding, elegant decor, and top-notch service from attentive staff.

Key Considerations:

  • Look for cruise lines with a reputation for upscale accommodations to ensure a lavish experience.
  • Choose cruise ships that offer exclusive perks like dedicated concierge services and fine dining options to elevate your cruise journey.

Example: Luxury cruise lines like Crystal Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises are renowned for their high-end offerings, including spacious suites, gourmet dining, and indulgent spa facilities, making them ideal choices for senior couples seeking a pampering escape at sea.

Small Ship and River Cruises

For a more intimate and relaxing cruise experience, consider small ship or river cruises tailored to senior couples. These cruises typically accommodate fewer passengers, allowing for a quieter and more personalized voyage. River cruises, in particular, offer scenic views along tranquil waterways and access to captivating destinations with historical significance.

  • Opt for smaller cruise ships that prioritize a more intimate ambiance, perfect for couples looking to enjoy each other’s company in a serene setting.
  • Explore river cruises that traverse iconic water bodies like the Danube or the Rhine, offering a blend of cultural enrichment and picturesque landscapes.

Example: River cruise lines such as Viking River Cruises and Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection provide immersive journeys with enriching shore excursions, cultural experiences, and onboard activities tailored for a mature audience, ensuring a fulfilling and memorable vacation for senior couples.

Adventure and Exploration Cruises

If you’re an adventurous senior couple seeking excitement and exploration, consider cruise lines that offer tailored adventure cruises to unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations. These cruises provide opportunities for thrilling activities like snorkeling in exotic reefs, hiking through scenic landscapes, and encountering diverse wildlife in remote locations.

  • Select cruise lines that specialize in expedition cruises to maximize your adventure experience, complete with expert guides and immersive activities.
  • Check for cruise itineraries that combine adventure with comfort, ensuring a balance between adrenaline-pumping excursions and comfortable onboard amenities.

Example: Adventure-focused cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions and Hurtigruten offer adrenaline-filled expeditions to captivating destinations like Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, and Alaska, providing a perfect blend of adventure and comfort for senior couples seeking a memorable escapade.

Essential Amenities for a Memorable Experience

Fine dining options.

Indulge in sumptuous dining experiences tailored to satisfy your discerning palate. Cruise lines renowned for their culinary excellence ensure you savor every bite. From gourmet multicourse meals to casual al fresco dining, you’ll find a plethora of options onboard. Special dietary requests? Not a problem; they cater to your specific needs. Imagine romantic dinners under the stars or themed evenings that tantalize your taste buds. Delight in the art of gastronomy as you cruise in style.

Entertainment and Recreation Activities

Immerse yourself in a world of entertainment and recreation designed to keep you engaged and entertained throughout your voyage. Whether you’re a fan of Broadway-style shows, live music performances, or comedy acts, the cruise lines have it all. Take part in interactive workshops, fitness classes, or rejuvenate at the onboard spa. Looking for more thrill? How about trying your luck at the casino or enjoying a movie night under the open sky? The possibilities are endless for you to create lasting memories.

Enrichment Programs and Lectures

Expand your horizons with enriching programs and lectures that cater to your thirst for knowledge and exploration. Engage in thought-provoking discussions led by experts in various fields. Dive deep into destination-focused talks, historical insights, or cultural workshops that offer valuable insights. Attend cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, or art classes to enhance your skills and passions. Stimulate your mind and feed your curiosity while cruising to fascinating ports of call.

Comparing Costs and Value

When choosing a cruise line for your next voyage as a senior couple, comparing costs and value is crucial to ensure you get the most out of your experience. Here’s a breakdown to help you make an informed decision based on your preferences and budget:

All-Inclusive Packages for Seniors

Opting for all-inclusive packages can be a convenient choice for senior couples looking to have a stress-free vacation without worrying about additional expenses. These packages often cover meals, beverages, onboard activities, and sometimes even shore excursions. Cruise lines like Crystal Cruises offer luxurious all-inclusive options that cater to your needs, ensuring you can relax and enjoy your trip without any unexpected costs.

Budget-Friendly Cruise Options

If you’re on a tighter budget but still want to experience a fantastic cruise, consider exploring budget-friendly options available from various cruise lines. Viking River Cruises, known for their value-for-money offerings, provide seniors with the chance to enjoy a well-planned itinerary without breaking the bank. With careful research and early booking, you can find affordable deals that meet your financial requirements while still providing an enjoyable and enriching cruise experience tailored to senior couples like yourselves.

Planning and Booking Tips

Best time to book for senior travelers.

When considering the best time to book your cruise as a senior traveler, it’s advisable to plan ahead to secure the ideal itinerary and accommodations. Booking early, ideally six to nine months in advance, can offer you a wider selection of cabins, ensuring you get the one that best suits your preferences. Moreover, early booking often comes with discounted rates and promotions, providing you with cost-effective options for your cruise vacation.

Choosing the Right Type of Cabin

Selecting the right cabin is crucial for your comfort and enjoyment during the cruise. As a senior couple, you may prefer cabins located closer to the ship’s amenities to reduce walking distances. Opting for a cabin with a balcony can provide you with a private outdoor space to relax and enjoy the scenic views. Additionally, consider cabins in more central locations to minimize motion sickness. Keep in mind that cabins on higher decks may offer better views but can be pricier than those on lower decks.

Excursions and Onshore Activities

When planning your excursions and onshore activities, focus on experiences that cater to your interests and physical abilities. Look for excursions that offer a well-paced exploration of the destinations without being too physically demanding. Consider guided tours that provide insightful narratives about the local culture, history, and landmarks. Influencer couple break their silence over 'completely untrue' story about leaving their kids alone during cruise

By Amy Lyall | 3 days ago

Influencer couple Matt and Abby Howard have broken their silence over a post she made on Instagram on a recent cruise.

The couple responded to online criticism after sharing that they recently left their two sons in a cruise ship stateroom while they went to dinner in a restaurant on board, watching the boys via a baby monitor .

In the video, Matt clarified that their boys, Griffin, two, and August, one, were not alone when they went to dinner and that they had "someone with our children at all times."

"There is information circulating about us that is completely untrue," Matt started the video .

"We take our role as parents extremely seriously, and we love our children more than anything in the entire world, and we're very protective of our kids."

The backlash against the couple kicked off when Abby shared a photo of their baby monitors – which she deleted after a couple of hours – on her Instagram story.

"So we ended up taking them for 5 nights and it became apparent that they weren't enjoying it and therefore we weren't either. So THEN we switched our dinner time to AFTER their bedtime and FaceTimed the monitors while we ate," read the text on the post.

She noted the baby monitors don't work well on board, which is why they had been FaceTiming them and added "that worked out muchhhh better for everyone."

Influencer couple Matt and Abby Howard with their sons

Matt explained it was a seven-night cruise with their extended family and acknowledged Abby had posted that the couple were "at dinner, FaceTiming the baby monitors while our children were asleep in their staterooms."

"And people started to speculate, and believe, that we had left our children alone in their staterooms," he continued.

"And that is just completely untrue. We had someone with our children at all times on this boat. Period."

"I can see where my story did lead to misunderstanding, which is why I ended up deleting it several hours after posting it," Abby added.

While she thanked people for raising concern for their sons' wellbeing, she explained they use the monitors at home and while on holiday due to their boys' sleeping arrangement.

August and Griffin sleep in blackout tents, which have a slot for a white noise machine and a baby monitor.

"Even if we are sleeping in the exact same room as the boys, we always turn their monitor on," she added.

"Even when we would tag-team and take turns at family dinner, we would turn on FaceTime so we could also have eyes on them as their parents, if we weren't the ones attending them in that moment."

Matt admitted if it wasn't for having Abby's family there with them on the cruise they wouldn't have left the room, due to looking after their boys.

The response video from the TikTok famous couple, who also host The Unplanned podcast, came after plenty of backlash online.

After Abby's post social media users were quick to slam the couple.

Several TikTokers and YouTube creators made videos detailing safety concerns about the situation, and Matt and Abby had limited comments on a lot of their posts due to the criticism.
